This document explains how to install or replace an Embedded Remote Access Option
(ERA/O) remote management card in your system.
Before You Begin
NOTE: For more information about setting up and using an ERA/O card, see the
remote access controller documentation provided on the documentation CD that came
with your system. The latest information about your ERA/O card is available at the
Dell Support website at support.dell.com.
Before installing the ERA/O card, record the system configuration settings. View the system
configuration screens in the System Setup program and make a note of each setting. See
your User's Guide for instructions about using the System Setup program.
Installing an ERA/O Card
CAUTION: Only trained service technicians are authorized to remove the system
cover and access any of the components inside the system. See your System
Information Guide for complete information about safety precautions, working
inside the computer, and protecting against electrostatic discharge.
1Open the bezel. See "Removing the Bezel" in your Installation and Troubleshooting
Guide.
2Turn off the system, including attached peripherals, and disconnect the system and
peripherals from their electrical outlets.
3Remove the cover. See "Removing the Cover" in your Installation and Troubleshooting
Guide.

4Remove the front fan assembly:
aDisconnect the front fan assembly power cable from the front fan connector on
the SCSI backplane board.
bRelease the fan assembly by pressing the release latch. See Figure 1-1.
cSwing the fan assembly up and out of the way.

5Remove any full-length expansion cards. If you do not have any expansion cards
installed, skip to step 6.
aUnfasten and remove the expansion-card latch. See Figure 1-2.
bDisconnect any cables attached to the card.
cGrasp the expansion card by its edges, and remove it from the expansion-card
connector on the system board.

6Remove the expansion-card guide:
aPress the middle of the expansion-card guide in the direction of the SCSI
backplane (away from the system board) and carefully rotate the expansion-card
guide toward the system board until the card guide retention clip unhooks from
the system board. See Figure 1-3.
bSwing the expansion-card guide up and out of the way.

7Install the ERA/O card in the system:
aUnpack the ERA/O card.
If you are replacing an ERA/O card, see "Removing an ERA/O Card" for removal
instructions before continuing with the next step.
bPosition the ERA/O card so that the card connector is directly over the connector
on the system board and the mounting holes in the card line up with the support
posts on the system board. See Figure 1-4.
cPress down until the ERA/O card connector is fully seated in the connector on the
system board and the support posts are secured in the mounting holes on the card.

8Reinstall the expansion-card guide:
aHolding the expansion-card guide at a 45-degree angle, insert the two tabs at the
ends of the expansion-card guide base into the slots on the system board. See
Figure 1-5.
bRotate the expansion-card guide down until the clip snaps securely onto the
system board.

9Reinstall expansion cards that you removed:
aPosition the expansion card so that the card-edge connector aligns with the
expansion-card connector on the system board. See Figure 1-2.
bInsert the card-edge connector firmly into the expansion-card connector until the
card is fully seated.
cWhen the card is seated in the connector, close the expansion-card latch.
NOTE: SCSI cables connected from an expansion card to the SCSI backplane
board should be routed under the front fan assembly.
dReconnect all expansion-card cables.

10 Reinstall the front fan assembly:
aPlace the fan assembly in the hinge bracket and swing the fan assembly down until
the release lever snaps into place.
bConnect the fan assembly power cable to the front fan connector on the SCSI
backplane board.
11 Replace the system cover. See "Replacing the Cover" in your Installation and
Troubleshooting Guide.
NOTE: If the server management Ethernet connector has not been used before,
remove the cover that protects the connector before connecting a network cable. See
Figure 1-6 for the location of the connector.
12 Connect a network cable to the 10-Mbps server management Ethernet connector on
the system back panel. See Figure 1-6.

13 Reconnect the system and peripherals to their electrical outlets, and turn them on.
14 Close the bezel.
15 Update the ERA/O card with the latest version of the ERA/O firmware, available at the
Dell Support website at support.dell.com.
See the RAC documentation provided on the documentation CD for
information about updating the firmware.

Removing an ERA/O Card
NOTICE: Do not attempt to disconnect the ERA/O card from the connector on the
system board until you have unfastened the card from each of the four support posts.
1Unfasten each of the support posts from the card:
aCompress the clasp at the top of the support post while carefully lifting up on the
corner of the card to unseat the post. See Figure 1-7.
bRepeat step a for each support post.
2Lift the ERA/O card straight up and out of the chassis.
