Installation Guide
This installation guide provides instructions for trained service technicians converting
one or more Dell PowerEdge 4x00 or 6300 rack-mounted computer systems into a
tower configuration.
WARNING: The power supplies in this computer system produce high
voltages and energy hazards, which can cause bodily harm. Only
trained service technicians are authorized to perform this procedure,
which includes removing the system cover and accessing the components
inside the system.
One tower kit is required for each system you are converting to the tower
configuration. The tower kit includes the following items (see Figure 1-1):
•Four rubber feet
•18 plastic filler plugs
•Four 8-32 x 0.5-inch hex-head, thread-forming screws
NOTE: The nonmetric screws called out in illustrations and referenced in procedural
steps are identified first by size and then by the number of threads per inch. For
example, a #8 Phillips-head screw with 32 threads per inch is identified as an
8-32 screw.

Before You Begin
Before you begin removing your system from the rack, carefully read the safety
precautions and tool requirements in the following sections.
Important Safety Information
Follow these safety precautions when removing your system from the rack.
Kit Restrictions
This tower kit is intended to be installed by trained service technicians.
Rack Stabilizer Feet
WARNING: Removing PowerEdge systems from a Dell rack without the
front and side stabilizer feet installed could cause the rack to tip over,
potentially resulting in bodily injury under certain circumstances.
Therefore, always install the stabilizer feet before removing components
from the rack.

WARNING: Never pull more than one system out of the rack on its slide
assemblies at one time. The weight of more than one extended system
could cause the rack to tip over and injure someone.
The stabilizer feet help prevent the possibility of the rack tipping over when a
system or other components are pulled out of the rack far enough so that the slide
assemblies are fully extended. Refer to the Dell PowerEdge Rack-Mountable
Solutions Installation Guide provided with the rack for instructions on installing the
stabilizer feet.
Recommended Tools
To install the tower kit, you need the following tools:
•A #2 Phillips screwdriver
•A flat-blade screwdriver
Installation
To install a tower kit, perform these steps (see the following subsections for detailed
instructions):
1. Shut down and turn off the system.
2. Remove the rack’s front and rear doors.
3. Remove the cable management arm.
4. Remove the cable tray.
5. Remove the system from the rack.
6. Replace the rack doors.
7. Install the rubber feet.
8. Remove the front bezel.
9. Reorient the drives.
10. Reorient the system badge.
11. Replace the front bezel.
12. Attach the cables and turn the system on.
Shutting Down and Turning Off the System
It is usually best to perform this installation at a time when there are no users on the
system. Shut down all application programs running on the server and turn off the
system.

Removing the Doors From a 24-U or 42-U Rack
You must remove the doors from the rack to provide access to the interior of the
rack and to prevent damage to the doors while installing the kit. To remove the doors,
perform the following steps.
CAUTION: To prevent personal injury due to the size and weight of the
doors, never attempt to remove the doors by yourself.
1. Open the latch on the front door (see Figure 1-2).
Slide the latch’s push-button cover up as far as it will go, press the push button,
rotate the handle clockwise until the latch releases, and then pull the door open.

2. Remove the front door of the rack.
If you have a 42-unit (U [1.75 inches]) rack, perform the following steps
(see Figure 1-3):
a. One person should grasp the top of the door to stabilize it. The other person
should grasp the bottom of the door.
b. The person holding the bottom of the door should press the release lever on
the bottom hinge and then pull the bottom of the door away from the rack a
few inches.
c. The person holding the top of the door should press the release lever on the
top hinge and then pull the door away from the rack.

If you have a 24-U rack, perform the following steps (see Figure 1-4):
a. With the door open, lift out and fully retract all hinge pins.
b. Lift the door out carefully.
Repeat steps 1 and 2 to remove the back door from the rack.
Store the doors in an area where they will not fall over while you install the kit.

Removing the Cable Management Arm
To remove the cable management arm on the back of the system, perform these
steps:
1. Disconnect the power cable from the power distribution unit inside the rack or
from the AC power receptacle providing power to the system you are removing.
2. Disconnect the input/output (I/O) and power cables from the back of the system.
Identify the cables fastened to the cable management arm, and release the
Velcro strips securing the cables to the cable management arm.
3. From the back of the rack, remove the three 10-32 x 0.25-inch Phillips-head
screws securing the cable management arm to the cable tray on the back of the
system (see Figure 1-5).
4. Slide the system partially out of the rack and verify that the cable management
arm and all of the cables are removed.
5. Disconnect the right-angle bracket of the cable management arm from the
vertical rail on the back of the rack (see Figure 1-5).
Fold the cable management arm and place the arm, together with all attaching
hardware, in a container for future use.

Removing the Cable Tray
Remove the cable tray on the back of the system by removing the five 6-32 x 0.25-inch
Phillips-head screws that secure the tray to the system chassis (see Figure 1-6).

Removing the System From the Rack
The subsections that follow include instructions for removing the system from the
rack and removing the rails and other hardware associated with the rack installation
of the system.
Removing the System
To remove the system from the rack, perform these steps.
WARNING: If you are removing more than one system, first remove the
system in the highest position. Never pull more than one system out of the
rack at a time.
1. Slide the system out of the rack until the slides lock in the extended position.
WARNING: Because of the size and weight of the system, never attempt to
remove the system from the slide assemblies by yourself.
2. Press the green button near the end of each interior slide to release the slide
locks (see Figure 1-7), and then slide the system completely out of the rack.

Removing the Rails and Rack Adapters
To remove the rails and rack adapters from the system, perform these steps.
WARNING: The system weighs approximately 50 kilograms (kg)
(110 pounds [lb]) when fully loaded. To prevent personal injury, do not
attempt to move the system by yourself.
1. Remove the three rails on each side of the system (see Figure 1-8).
Remove each rail by removing the four 10-32 x 0.25-inch Phillips-head screws that
secure the rail to the system chassis.

2. Remove the rack adapters from each side of the system (see Figure 1-8) by
removing the three 10-32 x 0.25-inch Phillips-head screws that secure each rack
adapter to the side of the system.
3. Install a plastic filler plug (provided with the kit) into each hole on the top
(left side) of the system.
Removing the Slide Assemblies From the Rack
To remove the slide assemblies from the rack, perform these steps:
1. Remove the two 10-32 x 0.5-inch Phillips-head screws that secure the slide’s
mounting bracket to the front of the rack.

2. Repeat step 1 to remove the slide mounting screws at the back of the rack.
3. Lift the slide assembly out of the rack and place it out of the way.
Repeat this step to remove the slide assembly on the opposite side of the rack.
4. To remove the cage nuts (used to secure the rack-adapter thumbscrews) from
each vertical rail, use a flat-blade screwdriver or the cage-nut installation tool
(if available), pry down on the outside top edge of the cage nut while pushing
inward on the cage nut to remove it from the vertical rail (see step 3 in
Figure 1-10).
Repeat this step to remove the remaining cage nuts.
5. Package all the rack installation hardware you removed and label it for future use.

Replacing the Rack Doors
CAUTION: To prevent personal injury due to the size and weight of the
doors, never attempt to replace the doors by yourself.
To replace the 42-U rack’s front and back doors, perform the following steps:
1. Lift the front door into position, and align the hinges with the holes in the rack as
shown in Figure 1-3.
2. Slide the hinges into the holes in the rack until the hinge release levers lock the
hinges into position.
3. Verify that the hinges are latched.
4. Close the door latch by rotating the handle counterclockwise until it stops, push
in the handle until it locks in position, and then slide the cover down over the
push button (see Figure 1-2).
5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 to install the back door.

To replace the 24-U rack’s front and back doors, perform the following steps:
1. Lift the front door into position, and align the hinges with the hinge insert in the
rack as shown in Figure 1-4.
2. Slide the hinge pins into the hinge insert in the rack until the hinges lock into
position.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 to install the back door.
Installing the Rubber Feet
To install the rubber feet on the system base, perform these steps:
1. Lay the system on its left side (see Figure 1-11) on a piece of foam or cardboard
(to prevent damage to the system).
2. Attach a rubber foot in each of the four corners on the cabinet base (the cabinet’s
right side in the former rack configuration) using an 8-32 x 0.5-inch hex-head,
thread-forming screw (screws and rubber feet at provided with the kit), as shown
in Figure 1-11.

Removing the Front Bezel
To remove the system front bezel, perform these steps:
1. Remove the system cover (see Figure 1-12).

a. Turn the keylock on the back edge of the cover to the unlocked position.
b. Slide the cover about a centimeter (half an inch) toward the back of the
system.
c. Grasping the top of the cover at both ends, lift it away from the chassis.
2. With your fingertips, gently pry loose the four tabs along the right edge of the
bezel, and disengage the three clips on the opposite edge from the chassis
(see Figure 1-13).
3. Rotate the bezel to the left to disengage and remove it.
