About Your Solution
Overview
The solution consists of two Dell PowerVault NX3500 systems and one Dell
backup power supply (BPS). The two PowerVault NX3500 systems are also
referred to as controller 0 and controller 1. The information in this document
applies to both the PowerVault NX3500 systems and the BPS.

The power-on indicator lights when the
system power is on.
The power button controls the DC power
supply output to the system. When the
system bezel is installed, the power
button is not accessible.
NOTE: When powering on the system,
the video monitor can take from several
seconds to over 2 minutes to display an
image, depending on the amount of
memory installed in the system.
NOTE: On ACPI-compliant operating
systems, turning off the system using the
power button causes the system to
perform a graceful shutdown before power
to the system is turned off.
NOTE: To force an ungraceful shutdown
during an emergency, always use the user
interface. Shut down controller 0 and wait
for 15 minutes. After 15 minutes, shut down
controller 1.
2 Video connector Connects a monitor to the system.
3 Hard-drive activity
indicator
Lights up when the hard drive is in use.

4 LCD panel Provides system ID, status information,
and system error messages.
For more information on the LCD panel,
see "LCD Panel Features" on page 12.
NOTE: If the system is connected to
AC power and an error has been detected,
the LCD lights amber regardless of
whether the system has been powered on.
5 system identification
button
Turns the system ID modes on and off.
The identification buttons on the front
and back panels can be used to locate a
particular system within a rack.
When one of these buttons is pushed,
the LCD panel on the front and the
system status indicator on the chassis
back panel light blue until one of the
buttons is pushed again.
6Systemstatus
indicator
Lights blue during normal system
operation. Lights amber when the system
needs attention due to a problem.
7 USB connectors (2) Connect USB devices to the system. The
ports are USB 2.0-compliant.
8 Hard drives (2) Two 3.5-inch hot-swappable SATA drives.
9 System identification
panel
A slide-out panel for system information
including the Express Service tag,
embedded NIC MAC address, and
iDRAC6 Enterprise card MAC address.
10 Optical drive One slim-line SATA DVD-ROM drive or
DVD+/-RW drive.

LCD Panel Features
The system's LCD panel provides system information and status and error
messages to signify when the system is operating correctly or when the system
needs attention. See "LCD Status Messages" on page 22 for information on
specific status codes.
The LCD backlight lights blue during normal operating conditions and lights
amber to indicate an error condition. When the system is in standby mode,
the LCD backlight switches off after five minutes of inactivity, and can be
turned on by pressing the Select button on the LCD panel. The LCD
backlight remains off if LCD messaging is turned off through the BMC or
iDRAC utility, the LCD panel, or other tools.

1 Left Moves the cursor back in one-step increments.
2 Select Selects the menu item highlighted by the
cursor.
3 Right Moves the cursor forward in one-step
increments.
During message scrolling:
• Press once to increase scrolling speed.
• Press again to stop.
• Press again to return to default scrolling.
• Press again to repeat the cycle.
4 System ID Turns the system ID mode on (LCD panel
flashes blue) and off.
Press quickly to toggle the system ID on and
off. If the system hangs during POST, press and
hold the system ID button for more than
five seconds to enter BIOS Progress mode.

Home Screen
The Home screen displays user-configurable information about the system.
This screen is displayed during normal system operation when there are no
status messages or errors present. When the system is in standby mode,
the LCD backlight turns off after five minutes of inactivity if there are
no error messages. Press one of the three navigation buttons (Select, Left,
or Right) to view the Home screen.
To navigate to the Home screen from another menu, continue to select the
up arrow until the Home icon is displayed, and then select the
Home icon.
Setup Menu
Option Description
DRAC Select DHCP or Static IP to configure the network
mode. If Static IP is selected, the available fields are IP,
Subnet (Sub), and Gateway (Gtw). Select Setup DNS to
enable DNS and to view domain addresses. Two separate
DNS entries are available.
NOTE: It is recommended that you always use the default
settings. Do not change the settings unless directed by a
Dell customer representative or a service technician.
Set error Select SEL to display LCD error messages in a format
that matches the IPMI description in the SEL. This can
be useful when trying to match an LCD message with an
SEL entry.
Select Simple to display LCD error messages in a more
user-friendly description. See "LCD Panel Features" on
page 12 for a list of messages in this format.
Set home Select the default information to be displayed on the
LCD Home screen. See "View Menu" on page 15 to see
the options and option items that can be selected to
display by default on the Home screen.

Option Description
DRAC IP Displays the IPv4 or IPv6 addresses for the iDRAC6.
Addresses include DNS (Primary and Secondary), Gateway,
IP, and Subnet (IPv6 does not have Subnet).
MAC Displays the MAC addresses for DRAC, iSCSIn, or NETn.
NOTE: If the iDRAC6 Express card is not installed on the
system, the MAC option displays the MAC addresses for
BMC, iSCSIn, or NETn.
Name Displays the name of the Host, Model, or User String for
the system.
Number Displays the Asset tag or the Service tag for the system.
Power Displays the power output of the system in BTU/hr or
Watts. The display format can be configured in the Set
home submenu of the Setup menu. See "Setup Menu" on
page 14.
Temperature Displays the temperature of the system in Celsius or
Fahrenheit. The display format can be configured in the
Set home submenu of the Setup menu. See "Setup
Menu" on page 14.

Power Indicator Codes
The power supplies have an indicator that shows whether power is present or
whether a power fault has occurred.
• Not lit—AC power is not connected.
• Green—In standby mode, indicates that a valid AC source is connected to
the power supply, and that the power supply is operational. When the
system is on, it also indicates that the power supply is providing DC power
to the system.
• Amber—Indicates a problem with the power supply.
• Alternating green and amber—When hot-adding a power supply, this
indicates that the power supply is mismatched with the other power
supply (a high output power supply and an Energy Smart power supply are
installed in the same system). Replace the power supply that has the
flashing indicator with a power supply that matches the capacity of the
other installed power supply.
