Product Description
The Delta Field Modules are small expansion I/O boards
that provide remotely expandable I/O to Delta’s BACnet
Controllers. The DFM-400P Pulse Input Field Module
provides four pulsed inputs and communicates directly on
a BACnet RS-485 MS/TP network where it functions as an
independent BACnet device and the pulse counter values
and PI objects are accessible over the MS/TP network.
Ideal for electrical, water, gas, and various flow meters,
the DFM-400P has four pulse inputs. Two inputs support
pulses from 0 to 200 Hz and the other two inputs support
pulses from 0 to 2000 Hz.
Any additional strategies associated with the pulse
counter values are typically programmed in GCL in other
controllers on the network.

Important Information
The Pulse Input Field Module is designed to work with Application Controller products starting with V3.22
firmware. Do not install any I/O Field Modules in a V3.21 or earlier installation.
Pulse Input Field Modules may only be installed on a BACnet RS-485 MS/TP network. However, since the
PI object is proprietary to Delta Controls, third party vendors may not be able to access these objects. To
better accommodate multi-vendor integration the pulse count values and other properties are mapped
into internal AV objects. Refer to the
Application Notes section in this document for further information
on objects.

Device Address DIP Switches
Each individual DIP switch represents a unique value, which forms the device address when added
together.

Jumpers

DEBOUNCE
Debounce circuitry, which may be necessary for dry/mechanical
contacts, may be enabled or disabled per pulsed input with this jumper
setting – but is limited to pulses less than 200 Hz.
Enabled With the jumper in place, debounce circuitry is connected
in circuit. Do not use this setting with open collector pulse
inputs.
Disabled Without the jumper, debounce circuitry is
not connected in
circuit.
NETWORK CONNECTION (No Jumper)
Not applicable – there is no jumper. This module is fixed so that it may
only be connected directly on a BACnet RS-485 MS/TP network. Do
not connect this module to a LINKnet network.

DEVICE TYPE (No Jumper)
Note that the Pulse Input Field Module does not have a Device Type
jumper. It is fixed as a Subnet level device when connected to a
BACnet MS/TP network. As a result, the Pulse Input Field Module may
only be installed at the Subnet level, and the DIP or MAC address is
always mapped into the Subnet portion of its address, inheriting other
portions of its BACnet address when DNA is enabled.
DNA
DERIVED NETWORK ADDRESSING (DNA)
Derived Network Addressing (DNA), which works only on an MS/TP
network in conjunction with the
Device Type setting and refers to the
ability of inheriting portions of its address from higher-up devices,
may be enabled or disabled via jumper setting.
Enabled With the jumper in place, the device automatically obtains
portions of its overall BACnet device address (as related to
Area and System) from higher-up devices on the network.
This is the preferred method of addressing the controller in a
system of Delta devices.
Disabled With the jumper removed, the device does
not obtain any
portions of its address from higher-up devices. Instead,
default numbers are assumed (for Area and System), which
may be modified via software. This method of addressing is
most useful in OEM or multi-vendor installations where
Delta products do not exist higher-up in the network
architecture, or where device address ranges are pre-
assigned for the installation.
NOTE: Whether or not Derived Network Addressing is enabled, the
Addressing DIP switches are always used to set the device MAC
address.

Mounting
The DFM-400P includes a plastic enclosure that can be mounted quickly and easily with two screws in an
appropriate location, or within another enclosure (to meet code requirements).
The Rev 1.2 DFM-400P enclosure can be snapped into a 35mm DIN rail.
Input Wiring
Pulse Inputs on the Pulse Input Field Module follow the same general wiring diagrams for dry contact
and open collector connections as other Delta products. Refer to separate documentation for additional
details.
Power
The Pulse Input Field Module requires a 24 VAC @ 2 VA power supply, typically an isolated Class II
transformer. More than one device – not including DCUs or V2 products – may be connected to the same
transformer, providing the transformer is properly sized, including line losses, and polarity is observed
between controllers (in regards to 24~ and GND). The transformer must ONLY be used to provide power
to other MS/TP devices. Auxiliary field devices (i.e., 4-20 mA devices) that don’t use ½ wave rectification
must be powered separately.
Network & Cabling Requirements
To ensure network stability and reliable communications, particularly at high speeds on a BACnet RS-
485 MS/TP network, it is imperative that you adhere to the following network and cabling requirements:

matches the following specifications:
•Balanced 100 to 120 ohm nominal impedance Twisted Shielded Pair (TSP) Cable
•Nominal capacitance of 16 PF/FT or lower
•Nominal velocity of propagation of 66% or higher
Topology For BACnet MS/TP networks, ensure the cable is installed as a
daisy-chain from one
device to the next.
Max. Nodes
The maximum number of devices per BACnet MS/TP network without any repeaters
is 50 .
Termination
Boards
A termination board must be installed at each end of each BACnet MS/TP network
segment – or two per BACnet MS/TP network. Ensure you do not overlook this in
laying out your network architecture and ordering product.
Repeater
A repeater (RPT-768) is not necessary unless more than 50 nodes will be installed on
a network or you need to extend the network beyond 4000 ft (1220 m).

Network Topology
1. Pulse Input Field Modules Configured as MS/TP Subnet Devices
Pulse Input Field Modules must reside on a BACnet RS-485 MS/TP network at the Subnet level with other
Subnet devices, allowing the Pulse Input Field Modules to readily communicate with other BACnet
devices. Typically this assumes that there is one other device configured as a System level device on the
network.
2. Pulse Input Field Modules Configured as LINKnet Devices
Not applicable for the DFM-400P Field Module, as it can only be connected to a BACnet RS-485 MS/TP
network.
Network Communications Setup
On an MS/TP network the Pulse Input Field Module communicates at a default speed of 76,800 bps, but
supports autobaud to match the speed the rest of the network is running at. Refer to the
V3.22 OCRAview
Technical Reference Manual
for further detail on configuring the MS/TP network or changing baud rates,
etc.

Application Notes
Objects
The following is a list of predefined or “fixed” objects that reside in the Pulse Input Field
Module, which you cannot create or delete. When connected to a BACnet RS-485 MS/TP
network, these objects are readily accessible over the network. Connecting to a LINKnet
network is not an option.

Notes
1. Object Names: The Device object name can be written to and may be up to 64 characters
long. The Pulse Input object names can also be written to and may be up to 16 characters
long. Note that the AV object names are fixed and cannot be changed.
2. PI Objects: These objects are used to configure each of the four pulsed inputs. Refer to the
PI Object in Chapter 10 (Objects) of the
V3.22 ORCAview Technical Reference Manual for
further information. The properties of the PI objects in the Pulse Input Field Module are
identical to those in other products with the following important notes:
•Description Tab: The PI object in the Pulse Input Field Module does not support this.
•Pulse Duration: The PI object in the Pulse Input Field Module does not support this
property. There is no need when the hardware supports a jumper configurable
debounce.
•COV: The PI objects each have a COV setting that is used globally for all of its properties
and associated AV objects, but current versions of DCU and DAC firmware do not
support COV data exchange with PI objects. Use the AV objects for data exchange
instead of the PI properties (at least until V3.23).
3. AV Objects: These are mapped internally to specific PI properties, as indicated in the list on
the previous page, for integrating with other vendors in a multi-vendor installation and
support COV data exchange.
Operation
The Pulse Input Field Module measures time and counts in-coming pulses. All the associated
values and statistics are then derived from these two basic functions.
Time Clock
The Pulse Input Field Module does not have a real time clock, but it does have an on-board
software clock. This means that time is only kept while the module is running, but is very
accurate. Time is lost whenever power is cycled on the device, and will be initialized to
‘Delta default time’. Time will of course be updated over the network from a device that is
configured as a Time Master.

Counting Pulses
The Pulse Input Field Module has two sets of counting registers.

Pulses arriving on the inputs are fed into their appropriate counter registers. On every
sample interval time for each Pulse Input the counter contents are added into the Total
Pulses property.
Pulse rate is an important consideration. The objective is to count for a long enough
time to get a reasonable number of pulses to do calculations with, but not to overflow the
counters and ‘lose’ pulses and/or get erroneous values. The
Rule of Thumb is to
multiply the expected maximum pulse rate by the sample interval time and verify that
the result remains within the Maximum Pulses per Sample Time as listed above. Notice
that only PP1 and PP2 are designed to handle the higher pulse rates. In any case, a fault
will indicate an overflow condition should it occur.
Generally a pulse counter is accurate to +/- one pulse due to timing considerations.
Reset
There are two types of resets that apply to the Pulse Input Field Module. Neither affects
the clock, but both will clear out a fault caused by an overflow condition.
•Reset Command: All counting properties are set to 0 - including total pulses - when the
PI object is reset, which is typically initiated by a user (i.e., OWS command). However,
note that resetting the device does not affect counted pulses or object values.
•Change to Sample Interval: The Total Pulse Count value is not affected. But since the
sample interval is fundamental to operation, all other properties are set to 0, at least
until new samples are counted (which depends on the sample interval).

Programming
Power optimization or load shedding programs or other strategies are typically written in GCL in
various Delta BACnet controllers based on the accumulated pulse values.
MS/TP Connection
Objects
All of the existing predefined DFM-400P objects are readily accessible over the MS/TP
network.
GCL Programming
Write GCL programs in other controllers on the network to use the pulsed input values to
accomplish the desired control strategies, but ensure network traffic is kept to a minimum.

The DFM-400P Field Module is an Electro-statically sensitive device. Proper ESD
protection (ground strap) should be used when installing this product so that damage to the
product does not occur.
