Safety Guidelines and Safe Use
The guidance given here is not intended to replace
anyrelevantUK/Europeanstandards,CompanyPro-
cedures,WorkatHeightRegulations.localstandards
orguidancesandotherlegislation,butisapractical
guidetogoodscaoldingpracticeusingDokaRin-
glockSystemscaolding.Pleaserefertothelatest
versionsofBSEN12810,BSEN12811,theNASC
Guidance Notes and current legislation prior to start-
ing your work.
▪Ensure that you follow your Company’s safe sys-
tems of work at all times.
▪ Ensurethatyourstaerecting,dismantlingormod-
ifyinganyRinglockscaoldaresuitablytrainedto
carry out the task.
▪ Ensurethatallpersonserecting,dismantlingor
modifyingthescaoldstructureareworkingto
thelatestversionoftheapplicableUK/European
standards and current legislation.
▪Ensure all Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is
suitableandsucientandwornasappropriate.
▪Consideration should also be given as to where ad-
ditionalhazardsmaybepresentwhilstscaolding
operationsaretakingplace,suchasoverheadpow-
ercables,roadways,schoolsandifpublicprotection
isrequired,ifthescaoldistobesheeted,whois
responsible for the design.
▪ Ringlockscaoldstructuresarerecommendedtobe
inspected and recorded (tagging system):
- Priortobeingputintouseforthersttime
- After any alteration or adverse weather
- Afteranyeventlikelytoaectitsstability
- Regular intervals as per site requirements or
Companyproceduresbutgenerallynotexceeding

▪Access and egress should be considered as early
aspracticable,forboththescaoldoperativesand
the end user in mind. Ladders should be used by
thescaolderswhenerecting,modifyingordis-
mantlinganyRinglockscaold.Ledgersandbrace
components etc. must not be used as a means of
support. Ensure that access and egress routes in-
cludingladdersandstairways,arekeptclear.
Below is the hierarchy of measures to consider
when selecting methods to prevent a person falling
at access and egress points:
- Install staircases
- Install ladder Access Bays with Single Lift Ladder
- Install ladder Access Bays with Multiple Lift Lad-
ders
- Install internal ladder access with protection i.e.
ladder trap/handrails etc.
- InstallexternalladderaccessusingtheRinglock

▪Employers have an obligation to ensure that Work at
Height is:
- Properly planned
- Appropriately supervised
- Done in a safe manner “so far as is reasonably
practicable”
- Include planning for emergencies & rescue
- Weather conditions do not jeopardise health and
safety
▪Before allowing people or materials on the Ringlock
scaold,ensurethatithasbeenerectedcorrectly
andcomplieswiththespeciedrequirementsandall
applicable legislation.
▪ EnsurethatallpeopleusingtheRinglockscaold
are aware of the purpose for which it is intended to
beusedandthemaximumloadingtowhichitcan
be subjected.
▪Ensure users understand that any unauthorised
modicationtotheRinglockscaoldorremovalof
components could cause a safety hazard. Alteration
orextensionsshouldbecarriedoutonlybyasuita-
bly trained personnel.
▪Provide barriers and warning notices to prevent ac-
cesstoincompletesectionsofscaolding.
▪Do not overload and ensure that crane and forklift
drivers understand loading restrictions on each part
ofthescaoldstructure.
▪Because of the increased use of mechanical lifting
plant on site there is an increased possibility for
scaoldingcomponentstobecomefouled/caught.
When using cranes or other mechanical lifting devic-
esnearanyRinglockscaoldcareshouldbetaken
to ensure that nothing catches under any part of the
scaold.Otherwiseupliftcouldoccurwithpotentially
dangerous consequences.
▪Toggle Pins or Standard Leg Locks available to pos-
itivelyxstandardstogetherifyourMethodState-
ment/ Risk Assessment / Test Report indicates that
uplift cannot be eliminated.
▪ Scaoldaccessshouldbesecuredwhennotinuse
topreventunauthorisedaccessontoscaolding.
Ladders should be kept in a storage compound or
container.
▪ Considerenclosingthebaseofthescaoldingto
preventclimbing,especiallynearoccupiedpremis-
es.
▪Consider the environment particularly with respect
to pedestrian and vehicle movements.
