Chapter 1 –Machine Description and Specifications
1.1 Description
The Tipper Tie RS4203 is a multi-purpose, automated double clipper with
a user-friendly programmable touch screen user interface. The RS4203
handles soft and hard emulsions as well as whole muscle meat products
ranging in size from 2 to 7 inches (50 to 180 mm) in diameter and up to 64
inches (162 cm) in length. Products are securely clipped using shirred
fibrous, collagen, cellulose, cook-in-plastic casings, and casing net.
The machine handles a wide variety of products including fresh and dry
sausage, smoked and cooked meats, and processed poultry in addition to
glues, sealants, and explosives in a broad range of package sizes.
The RS4203 is compact and portable and connects to all conventional pumps, fillers and portioners. Two
types of clippers are available, depending on product and application: The Z4270M, which uses stick clips
or the Z4270RP, which uses reel-fed clips for longer run times. The machine uses a gathering system
which voids product from the area where the clips are applied to ensure clean casing tails. The stroke of
the casing voider is adjustable and permits the RS4203 to produce air free, slack-filled packages.
The electronic programmable controller (PLC) provides precise control of all machine functions and rapid
clip cycle time. A state-of-the-art user interface includes a programmable touch screen through which the
operator can easily set and change operating parameters and which provides automatic machine
diagnostics for machine status and troubleshooting. The system is operator friendly and very reliable.
1.2 Operation
The RS4203 has an easy-to-use interface display unit or touchscreen
which provides a simple and useful means of communication between
the operator and the machine’s processing unit. The interface display
unit allows the operator to change a variety of timers, counters, and
ON/OFF functions within the programmable controller (PLC).
This versatility permits fine tuning of the RS4203 for a variety of
applications. The interface display unit helps the operator to achieve
optimum performance by providing the ability to compensate for any
changes that might occur in a particular product application.
Communication with the interface display unit is bi-directional. It not only requests and accepts
information from the operator, but also informs the operator of irregular conditions, warnings, and faults
that can occur during operation. An especially useful feature is the troubleshooting capability which is
integrated in the PLC and accessible through the interface display unit.
Operating the machine is a simple process. After the machine is readied for operation and the emergency
stop button is reset (twisted clockwise), the machine performs a series of automatic start-up functions.
Following a successful startup, the RUN screen appears on the interface display unit’s touchscreen
display. At this point, the operator can use the touchscreen to select an operating mode or to change the
operating parameters. The default startup mode is the “automatic mode.” If a single cycle is desired, the
operator can select the “manual mode” at this time.

RS4203 Manual Chapter 1 -Machine Description and Specifications
Rev 32, 01/11/13 Copyright © 2013, Tipper Tie, Inc., All rights reserved 12
When the operating parameters have been set to the desired values, the operator uses the Cycle Start
pushbutton to begin the operation. In the automatic mode, the stuffing and clipping cycle automatically
restarts at the end of each clip cycle until all of the casing has been used. In the manual mode, the
operating sequence ends with the completion of each clip cycle.
The operator places an appropriate length of soaked shirred casing onto the horn, and moves it into the
filling position. If the casing is not pre-clipped, a clip or knot is applied to the end of the casing before
filling begins. If desired, an end-of-casing sensor can be attached to the end of the casing nearest the
horn rotor. A piece-per-shirr counter may be used instead of the end-of-casing sensor. In either case,
when the end-of-casing lever is tripped or the counter setting is reached, the RS4203 completes the
clipping cycle.
The horn can then be reloaded with a new stick of shirred casing, the appropriate length of soaked
shirred casing is placed onto the horn, and the horn is moved into the filling position to repeat the
sequence of operation.
The RS4203 operating specifications are as follows :
•The machine produces packages that are air-free with clean tails
•The RS4203 is low-maintenance, easy to clean, and meets all USDA and CE safety and
sanitation standards.
•It handles all hard and soft emulsion products, plus chunk section and formed products.
•One operator can produce up to 24 packages per minute, depending on the type of product and
the pump capacity.
•The Skin Brake Assembly provides a moveable double brake for precise size control.
•A self-diagnostic programmable controller with touch screen operator interface permits easy
adjustment of all machine functions with the touch of a button.
•The adjustable-stroke casing voiding system permits controlled slack fill with 3 to 12 inches
(76,2-305 mm) of empty casing.
•The machine works with casings sized from 1.693 inches (43 mm) to 7.086 inches (180 mm),
stuffed product diameter, and with lengths up to 72 inches (1829 mm).
•The RS4203 uses Tipper Tie Z400 stick or ZR400 reel-fed clips.
Options
Tipper Tie offers several options that complement or customize RS4203 operations:
•The Heat Seal option provides seamless interaction with a heat sealing machine (HS3) for roll
stock film.
•The Looper option automatically feeds and attaches string loops under the clip for hanging
products.
•The Registration option provides a system for automatic registration and precise placement of
casing labels.
•A Horn Vacuum option is also available.

Chapter 2 – Safety Instructions
2.1 General Precautions
These safety instructions comply with the European Union Declaration of Conformity. To prevent possible
serious injury, it is extremely important that you understand and follow these safety precautions:
•Before installing and first operating the machine, this manual must be read and understood.
Operators must understand the meaning of the safety symbols described in this chapter.
•This machine must be installed securely and permanently attached to a solid surface before
starting and operating.
•This machine must be operated only by trained personnel. Training must be repeated at
regular intervals.
•Safety devices must be checked each day to ensure proper operation. Safety features should
be examined once each year by experts.
•Do not operate the machine unless the safety circuit is operating correctly. The safety circuit
stops the machine immediately upon the opening of the guards.
•Locate and identify the Emergency Stop (E-Stop) buttons on the operator interface and on
the remote interface panel. Press either E-Stop button to immediately stop the machine.
•Stop the machine to correct malfunctions by pressing either of the E-Stop buttons. Correct
and clear obstructions or malfunctions before restarting. Do not try to operate the machine by
continuing to reset. Stop the machine, identify the problem, and correct it. Immediately report
all malfunctions to the person in charge.
•Do not modify, remove, discard, disable or bypass guards or safety circuits.
•All guards, protective covers and shields must be in place before operating the machine. Do
not modify, remove, disable or bypass the guards. Operating this machine with guards,
covers or shields removed could result in serious injury.
•Prior to operating the clipper, to ensure both personnel and product safety, carefully inspect
the die support channel and punch assembly, the die and die pocket area of the die support,
the clip pusher assembly and the knife assembly.
•Keep hands and fingers clear of the, punch, die, knife, gates, voider, skin brake and looper
areas at all times. Never touch these areas while the machine is in operation. Do not allow
fingers, hands, jewelry or clothes around moving parts during operation of this machine.
•Before servicing or cleaning this machine, disconnect the air and electrical supply lines. Be
aware of the danger of electrical shock. Install lockout devices on the red electrical and
pneumatic lock-out handles when maintenance or repair requires removal of a guard.
•When this machine is not in operation, disconnect the air supply at the quick-disconnect.
Failure to disconnect the air supply creates serious risk of injury. To prevent unauthorized
personnel from operating the machine, secure the lock-out valve with a padlock.
•Pay particular attention to the loud sound levels produced by this machine. If applicable, use
ear protection. Note: the results of the noise tests can be found in Appendix 1.
•When moving the machine, keep hands and fingers clear of punch, die and knife areas.
•Use only original spare parts and accessories.
•If the machine is sold, the manual must be supplied to the new owner.
