Description
What’s a Net Dog? Just like watchdog timers give
computer operators assurance of operational integrity,
DPS’ Net Dog gives peace of mind to network managers.
With Net Dog on the job, you never have to worry
whether your 10BaseT network is down — Net Dog will
keep you posted. Anytime an element fails to respond to a
ping or if something is amiss with your environmental
controls, Net Dog will page you with a complete status
message.
In addition to paging and element manager reporting,
Net Dog will report relay status, discrete alarms and net-
work equipment failures on Ethernet using SNMP traps.
This lets your SNMP manager display the Net Dog’s find-
ings also.
Net Dog is programmed using any generic TTY termi-
nal. The easy-to-use menus enable you to quickly set up
your Net Dog with your pager number, point descriptions
and additional options. Programming can also be done
using your LAN or via dial-up modem. The entire config-
uration is saved on the Net Dog where it remains secure
through power outages in non-volatile RAM.
Status LEDs on the Net Dog give you a quick glance
indication of problems on site.
*Some of the mentioned applications require external
sensors.
Net Dog is easy to install, with connectors for all ports and
captive screw-lug terminals for alarm and control wiring.
Net Dog mounts on any vertical flat surface, or you can
just set it on top of your desk. Mounting panels are avail-
able for equipment rack mounting.
Net Dog firmware upgrades are now downloadable
from a file on disk or via e-mail.

Applications
The illustration above shows how the Net Dog fits
into a typical network site.
Net Dog’s eight fault alarm inputs accept any contact
closure type of event notification, such as door switches,
fuse alarms, major and minor equipment alarms, high
temperature alarms and tower light monitors.
There are 2 control relay outputs for operating stand-
by equipment, door locks or emergency lighting.
The ASCII port can be connected to the craft port of
any serial device (i.e. server, radio, or PBX). The craft
port can then be accessed using Telnet via LAN/WAN.
This port is also used to configure the Net Dog.
The Ethernet port is used to contact other devices
and determine their viability by “pinging.”If a given
device does not respond, it is reported as off line.
The line port is a modem interface to a telephone
line. The modem operates at 1200, 2400 or 9600 baud
options. When Net Dog has an event to report, it uses
this port to dial out to a paging terminal or to a DPS ele-
ment manager, such as T/MonXM or the IAM. This port
may also be used to configure the Net Dog.
Installation
1. Alarm inputs can be individually changed to inter-
face a TTL alarm source by moving jumpers on the
PC board. The alarm inputs are set by factory
default for dry contact alarm sources (jumpers A +
C). (See Fig. 3 for a schematic representation of the
input configurations.)
A. To change an input for TTL, remove the six
screws on the sides of the case and lift off the
cover.
B. Locate the jumper area in the bottom right area
of the circuit board. Refer to Fig. 5 to determine
which vertical row of jumpers belong to the
alarm channels you are changing.
C. Change jumpers for TTL externally or internally
biased, according to your application needs, as
in Fig. 4.
D. Replace the cover when finished changing
jumpers.
2. Use the mounting template to position the mounting
hardware, then mount the Net Dog in place.
3. Connect alarm and control leads per Fig. 6. The con-
trol point outputs can be wired for normally closed
or normally open contacts.
5. Connect data lines per Fig. 7.
6. Connect power. If using AC adapter, connect adapter
to the Net Dog before plugging into AC. If using a
battery supply, connect to the DC power terminals
(See Fig. 6).
7. Configure the Net Dog as outlined in the Software
Configuration section on page 4.
8. Test the Net Dog for proper operation per Table L.

Software Configuration
Local Connection
Connect a PC running terminal emulation software to
COM1 on back of the Net Dog (Fig. 7). Set your serial
port to match the data rate and word format currently
defined for the Net Dog’s COM1 (factory default is
9600, n, 8, 1). Connect to the Net Dog and enter
‘DPSCFG’to activate the configuration menu.
Remote Connection (Dial Up)
Set up a PC running TTY terminal emulation soft-
ware to dial the Net Dog’s modem. When a connection
is established (sometimes accompanied by receipt of a
hex byte), enter ‘DPSCFG’to activate the configuration
menu.
LAN Connection
In order to utilize the 10BaseT port on the Net Dog,
it must first be pre-provisioned using a remote terminal
(either dial up through the modem or directly connected
to Com 1). The LAN minimum configuration requires
setting the unit address (IP) and the subnet mask. Use of
a WAN requires that the default gateway be set.
Edit Section
Note: Menu Selection Hot Keys - The letter before a
parentheses right bracket ) or enclosed in parentheses ( )
is a hot key. When you type the hot key, you are taken to
that submenu. Most menus are two layers deep. Pressing
the <Esc> key brings you back to the previous level.
From the bottom level, pressing <Esc> twice returns to
the top menu.
1. Edit the System Information
Perform the following steps to configure your Net
Dog. If you change a field, the change is made when
you press <Enter>.

a. Select E)dit from the main menu.

Table A.
c. Select the field you want and make the changes.
Figure 9 shows an example of changing the Name
field.
d. Press <Enter>.
e. When you finish changing fields, press <Esc>.
2. Edit the Ethernet Port Parameters
a. Select P)orts from the System submenu.
b. Select E)Port from the Ports submenu. The current
E)port field values will be displayed. The prompt
line at the bottom of the screen lists the hot keys for
each field. (See Fig. 10)

Note: Changing Ethernet Addresses - When you enter a
four digit IP address (1.2.3.4) it changes all four fields.
Each field is individually validated so each segment has
to be between 0 and 255. If you try to enter any number
greater than 255 it will beep and ignore the pressed key.
Generally speaking, all digits of an IP address should be
entered. Partial entry is allowed and if your input termi-
nates with a period the following IP digit will be set to
Zero. Perform a power down reset.
3. Edit the Serial Port Parameters
a. Select S)Port from the System submenu. The current
serial port field values will be displayed. The
prompt line at the bottom of the screen lists the hot
keys for each field. (Fig. 11).
b. Type in ‘B’to change the data rate (baud) or ‘W’to
change the format (word length, parity and stop
bits). Make the desired changes. (See Fig. 11 for an
example of changing the word format.
The field meanings are given in Table B.
c. Select the field you want to change and make the
desired changes. Fig. 10 shows an example of
changing the Trap Address field.
d. Press <Enter>.
e. When you have changed all the fields that need
changing, press the escape key <Esc> twice to
return to the System submenu.

4. Edit Pager Port Parameters
a. Select pa(G)ers from the System submenu. The cur-
rent pager field values will be displayed. The
prompt line at the bottom of the screen lists the hot
keys for each field. (See Fig. 12 and table D for
field descriptions.)
b. Select the field you want to change and make the
desired changes. Fig. 11 shows an example of
changing the entries for the Pager 3 field.
c. Press <Enter>.
d. When you have changed all the fields that need
changing, press the escape key <Esc> to return to
the System submenu.

ID Identification number of pager. The pager IDs are
used in the alarm screen to designate who will be
paged when an alarm condition is detected by
Net Dog. All information on the pager screen may
be changed by typing the ID number <Enter> then
use the submenu to change any screen item for that
pager.
Type O - Off (Disabled)
A - Alpha numeric Pager
N - Numeric
T - Text: send a message in “raw”text to report to
computers over a terminal or generic monitoring
application.
M - T/MonXM: uses the same dial up protocol as
AlphaMax, DPM and KDA (TRIP).

A road sign to Net Dog telling it whether your
packets should stay on your local network or be
forwarded somewhere else on a wide area network.
An important parameter if you are on a network that is
connected to a wide area network. It tells Net Dog
which machine is the gateway out of your local network.
Set to 255.255.255.255 if not using.
When we get an alarm that is marked for setting a trap
it will then send that SNMP trap to the trap address.

5. Edit the Alarm Point Settings
Note: An alarm point is an input that causes a fault
alarm to be transmitted when the appropriate voltage is
applied.
a. Select A)larms from the System submenu. The cur-
rent alarm field values will be displayed. The
prompt line at the bottom of the screen lists the hot
keys for each field. (Fig. 13) The field meanings are
given in Table E.
b. Type in the number of the alarm point you want to
change. Select the field you want to change and
make the desired changes. Fig. 13 shows an example
of changing the entries for the Trap field for point 3.
c. Press <Enter>.
d. When you have changed all the fields that need
changing, press the escape key <Esc> to return to
the System submenu.
Note: The pager device can be an ASCII terminal,
T/MonXM element manager or IAM element manager,
as well as a pager.
6. Edit the Control Point Settings
Note: A control point is an output that changes state
when a command (SET) is sent to it.
a. Select C)ontrols from the System menu. The current
control field values will be displayed. The prompt
line at the bottom of the screen lists the hot keys for
each field. (Fig. 14, Table F.)
b. Type in the number of the control point you want to
change. Select the field you want to change and
make the desired changes. Fig. 14 shows an example
of changing the entries for the Description field for
point 1.
c. Press <Enter>.
d. When you have changed all the fields that need
changing, press the escape key <Esc> twice to
return to the System menu.

Field Description
ID This shows eight discrete input points where you
set alarm activation conditions. (non-editable field)
Description Your individual designation for each of eight alarms.
Polarity Polarity: Normal=Contact closure is an alarm.
If Polarity is reversed the contact closure is not an
alarm.
Trap Trap toggles the SNMP information.
Y=Send N=Don’t Send
Allows you to designate if an SNMP trap is to be
sent when an alarm condition exists.
Pager: Pri
& Sec Primary Pager and Secondary pager:Allows you to
designate pagers. The Net Dog will issue one call
to the primary (pager) device, followed by one call
to the secondary (pager) device.

7. Edit the Ping Information
Note: Ping is a command used to check the connection
of the line to a specifically addressed remote unit over
the ethernet. Receipt of a response validates the IP
addresses at both ends and indicates that the remote unit
is operating.
a. Select pi(N)g from the System submenu. The cur-
rent ping field values will be displayed. The prompt
line at the bottom of the screen lists the hot keys for
each field. (Fig. 15) The field meanings are given in
Table G.
b. Type in the number of the pinged device you want
to change. Select the field you want to change and
make the desired changes.
c. Press <Enter>.
d. When you have changed all the fields that need
changing, press the escape key <Esc> twice to
return to the System submenu.
8. Edit the Timer settings
Timer settings allow you to balance network traffic
load vs. alarm response times.
a. Select T)imers from the system submenu. The cur-
rent pinging timer field values will be displayed.
The prompt line at the bottom of the screen lists the
hot keys for each field. (See Fig. 16)
b. Type in C to change the cycle time, T to change the
try time or F to change the fail time. (See Table H
for a description of each field.)
Note: The smaller the CYCLE number, the sooner
you will find out about failures, but low numbers
also increase the traffic on your LAN.
c. Press <Enter>.
d. When you have changed all fields that need changing,
press the escape key <Esc> twice to return to the
system submenu.
Note: The FAIL time should be set to several times
the CYCLE time to allow multiple PINGs before a
FAIL is declared. Likewise, the CYCLE time should
be set to several times the TRY time.

Field Description
Cycle How often the Net Dog will go through its list of ping
targets and attempt to reach them with an ICMP ping.
Set P)eriod (0 to 120) and U)nits (toggles between
minutes and seconds). Default = 60 sec. Total range is
0-120 seconds or 0-120 minutes.
Try How long Net Dog waits after sending a ping request
before it determines that the target is unreachable. Set
P)eriod (0 to 120) and U)nits (toggles between
minutes and seconds). Default = 8 sec. Total range is
0-120 seconds or 0-120 minutes. (Busy networks
might necessitate a longer wait time here.)
Fail Period of time over which, if a unit has not responded,
it is considered failed. Set P)eriod (0 to 120) and
U)nits (toggles between minutes and seconds).
Default = 5 min. Total range is 0-120 seconds or
0-120 minutes.

9. Save Changes
To make changes effective, select N)Vram, then
W)rite from the main menu. (See Fig. 18)
Note: Selecting N)Vram and then W)rite saves the full
configuration into memory.
10. Restart
Power down and power up Net Dog so it can do a
full system restart.
This resets the network stack. Now Net Dog can use
the new Ethernet settings.
1. Monitoring Alarms
a. Select M)onitor from the main menu.
b. Select A)larms from the Monitor submenu. The cur-
rent status of the eight discrete alarm points will be
displayed. (See Fig. 19)
c. You can now select another monitor function or
press <Esc> to return to the main menu.
2. Displaying Pinged Device Status
a. Select M)onitor from the main menu.
b. Select P)ing Info from the Monitor menu. The
current status of the first 16 pinged devices will be
displayed. (Fig. 20). Press <Tab> to view the next
16 devices.
c. You can now select another monitor function or
press <Esc> to return to the main menu.

Monitor Section
You can connect a PC running terminal emulation
software to the configuration port and monitor alarms,
operate controls, display status of pinged devices and
display status of the Net Dog.

3. Operating Controls
a. Select M)onitor from the main menu.
b. Select C)ontrols from the Monitor submenu. The
status of the control points will be displayed. (See
Fig. 21).
c. Select the desired control point (1 or 2).
d. Press the key that corresponds to the desired mode
(Table J). The new control point status will be dis-
played.
e. You can now select another control function or press
<Esc> once to return to the Monitor menu or twice
to return to the main menu.
4. Displaying Net Dog Status
a. Select M)onitor from the main menu.
b. Select S)ystem from the Monitor menu. The current
status of the system will be displayed. (See Fig. 22)
These status points can only be observed by moni-
toring at the configuration port.
c. You can now select another control function or press
<Esc> to return to the main menu.
Ping Section
The Ping section allows you to activate manual pings
and to view ping status. This same function can be acti-
vated from the Edit/Ping Info submenu. (See Table G)
1. Select P)ing from the main menu.
2. Enter the address ID (1 through 32) you wish to
ping <Enter>. Fig. 22 shows an example of pinging
address ID 1.
Note: 1-32 are shortcuts for defined IP entries or
any full IP address. For example, 3 = 3rd address in
IP address table (See. Fig. 15)
3. The device will be pinged repeatedly and the result
of each ping will be displayed on the screen (see
Fig. 23).
OK = device responding
NOK (error code) = device not responding.
(See Table K for error codes).
4. Press any key to stop pinging.
5. Enter another pinged device number or press <Esc>
to return to the main menu.

Exit Procedure
Exiting the configuration utility leaves the port avail-
able for reach through.
1. Select e(X)it from the main menu.
2. The screen will display the DOS prompt symbol.
3. Disconnect computer and connect device for reach
through access.
Operation
The Net Dog can be accessed from a DPS element
manager, such as a T/MonXM WorkStation or
Intelligent Alarm Mediator (IAM), or from your SNMP
manager.
Local LED Display - Operational status LEDs are
visible on top of the Net Dog’s case. Fig. 25 shows the
LED meanings.
Note: On power up, LEDs will alternate flashing on/off
for approximately six seconds. If the pattern repeats, a
firmware download may be needed. Refer to the
Downloading Firmware section on page 12 for down-
load instructions or call DPS tech support.

Configuration Port Monitoring - See the Monitor
Section for operation from a computer connected to the
COM1 port.
DPS Element Managers - The Net Dog can report
to a DPS T/MonXM WorkStation or an Intelligent
Alarm Mediator. When viewing the Net Dog alarms
from either of these element managers, refer to the
T/MonXM or IAM manual for screen descriptions. The
T/MonXM data base will have to be configured for
interrogating the Net Dog as a dial up device.
SNMP managers - Net Dog reports to your SNMP
manager will appear on screen as described in the docu-
mentation for your SNMP manager.
Alphanumeric Pager Descriptions
Clear Channel Connection
A clear channel connection allows you to remotely
access the craft port of a device that is connected to the
Net Dog’s COM1 port via Ethernet. Proceed as follows:
1. Connect a Telnet client to TCP port 2002 at the
address of the desired Net Dog.
2. Get the clear channel and communicate with the
device as required.
3. Disconnect when complete. (Disconnect will auto-
matically occur after 10 minutes of no activity.)
Test and Acceptance
After installation and configuration of the Net Dog is
completed, perform the procedure in Table L appropriate
for the reporting devices in your network.

Downloading Firmware
Firmware upgrades are provided either on disk or via
modem. They are downloaded at the COM1 port using
DPS Load software, which is included with the firmware
upgrade file. Use the following procedure to upgrade
your Net Dog’s firmware:
1. Load the upgrade file on your PC.
2. Connect the serial port of your PC to COM1 on the
Net Dog.
3. Start the DPS Load program.
4. Cycle the power on your Net Dog.
5. While the Net Dog LEDs are displaying the flashing
on/off pattern for approximately six seconds after
power up, start to download the file.
6. When finished, normal operation will resume.
7. Disconnect your computer.
Net Dog MIB Installation
To enable your SNMP manager to receive and inter-
pret the TRAPs sent by the Net Dog, the MIB provided
with the Net Dog must be compiled into the SNMP
manager’s MIB. Refer to your SNMP manager’s operat-
ing manual or your SNMP support group for instructions
regarding this procedure.
