Problem: Lost NetGuardian Password
Platform: NetGuardian 832A & 216T
Have you lost your NetGuardian password and no longer
have access to the unit? You can reset your NetGuardian
password and regain access.
Resetting your NetGuardian password involves just a few
quick steps. The procedure varies by NetGuardian model.
Use the following “techno knowledge” paper to reset your
NetGuardian password.
This “techno knowledge” paper can help you if:
• You have lost your NetGuardian 832A or 216T password.

Power down the
NetGuardian
Connect your PC to
the NetGuardian
front craft port
Create a new
HyperTerminal
connection
Remove the
top cover
Move Switch 1
of the DIP
switch to 'ON'
Power up the
NetGuardian
Navigate to the
NVRAM menu
and reinitialize the
NetGuardian
Exit out of the
NetGuardian
menus
Power down the
NetGuardian
Return Switch 1
of the DIP switch
to 'OFF'
Replace the
top cover
Power up the
NetGuardian

Troubleshooting Checklist
NetGuardian 832A & 216T
 Power down the unit
o Remove the power cable or fuse
 Remove the top cover from the NetGuardian
o Remove screws from the top, sides, and/or back of the unit as necessary to free
the top cover.

Screw locations will vary by NetGuardian model.
o Lift the top cover off
 Move Switch 1 of four-position DIPswitch 1 to the ‘ON’ position
An example of four-position DIPswitch 1, typically located behind the NetGuardian front-panel LCD display
 Connect your PC to the front craft port of the NetGuardian
o Connect your laptop to the front DB9 of the NetGuardian. Use a serial-to-serial
or USB-to-serial cable.

 Create a new HyperTerminal connection
o No handshaking
o 115200 baud
o 8 data bits
o No parity
o 1 stop bit
 Power up the NetGuardian
o Apply the power cable or fuse
o You should see NetGuardian diagnostic information on your PC
 Navigate to the NVRAM menu and reinitialize the NetGuardian
o Press ‘Escape’ to view the main menu
o Press ‘C’ for Config, then ‘E’ for Edit, then ‘V’ for NVRAM
o Press ‘I’ for Initialize to restore factory default settings
o Press ‘W’ to write to NVRAM
In HyperTerminal, navigate to the NVRAM menu, restore the factory defaults, and write them to the NVRAM
 Exit out of the NetGuardian menus
o Press ‘Escape’ repeatedly to reach the main menu
o Press ‘X’ to disconnect from the NetGuardian
 Power down the NetGuardian
o Remove the power cable or fuse

 Return Switch 1 of four-position DIPswitch 1 to the ‘OFF’ position
An example of four-position DIPswitch 1, typically located behind the NetGuardian front-panel LCD display
 Replace the top cover of the NetGuardian
o Replace all screws removed earlier
 Power up the NetGuardian
o Apply the power cable or fuse
o All settings, including the login password, will now be set to the factory defaults
o The factory default NetGuardian password is “dpstelecom”
