Problem: Unable to Setup a NetGuardian to be Polled by T/Mon
Platform: NetGuardian & T/Mon NOC/SLIM
Setting up T/Monto poll a NetGuardianis a commonand
important part of new RTU deployments. If T/Moncan’t poll
your remotes, youdon’t have the visibilityyouneed to do
your job.
Use the following “techno knowledge” paper to setup T/Mon
to poll a NetGuardianand troubleshoot commonissues.
• Youare unable to setup your T/Monto poll a NetGuardian.

This “techno knowledge” paper can help you if:

Trouble Shooting Checklist: T/Mon Edit Procedure1
From TMonEdit, check the All boxin the top right corner of the options menu.
Select Remotes >> LAN-based Remotes >> Your Device
Fill in the NetGuardian Definition screenappropriatelyfor the NetGuardian youare setting up.
NOTE: The Base Address field should matchthe Unit ID number onthe NetGuardian

Select your device inthe Device menu
Enter the firmware versioncurrentlyloaded onyour NetGuardian
Enter the Address Defaults settings (see page 7-11 inthe T/MonXM User Manual for details)

Select the Displays tab inthe device menu. This screenshows alldisplaypoints and
descriptions.
Double click the Discretes (Display1) descriptionto view the discrete alarminputs.
Input data for your discrete alarmpoints similar to the example screens below (refer to page 7-
13 of the T/MonXM User Manual for details):

From the Master Menu of the T/Monselect the ‘Parameters’ option. This willopen the
Parameters Menu.
From the Parameters Menuselect ‘Remote Ports’. This will put youin the Remote Parameters
mode.

NOTE: The steps in this box are only necessary if this is the first time your are setting
up your T/Mon to use a LAN connection
The Remote Parameters screen willdefault to the last port that was being edited. To find Port
28, press the ‘F’ keyand find a port. Enter ‘28’ and press ‘Enter’ to find Port 28.
Press ‘E’ to enter Edit mode.
Use the ‘Tab’ keyto select “ETHERNET I/O”.
Press ‘F’ to Find or press ‘N’ repeatedlyto reachanyavailable job port above 50. Anavailable
job port will have a “Port usage” of “HALTED”.
Once youhave found anyavailable (“HALTED”) job above 50, press ‘E’ to enter Edit Mode.

Use the ‘TAB’ keyto select the “DCP(F) INTERROGATOR” and press ‘Enter’.
Set eachfield to the value that appears inthe screencapture below:
NOTE: After filling inthe fields, youshould see a <No Data Connection> message.

Press ‘F6’ to reachthe Data Connectionscreen
Press ‘F1’ to reach the Ethernet TCP Port Definitionscreen.
Use the ‘TAB’ keyto select “UDP”.
Set the TCP port to the same port number that youchose whenconfiguring the NetGuardian
(default is 2001).
Press ‘F8’ to save your changes.
Exit back to the Master Men
Select ‘Files’ from the Master Menuto reachthe Files Maintenance Menu.

Select ‘Windows’ from the menuto reachthe Window Definitionscreen.
From the “Window Definition” screen, youcanset up analarm window to send your
NetGuardian’s alarms to later inthis procedure. To do so, simplymove to the end of the list and
enter a new name and descriptionfor your new alarm window.
Press F8 to save anychanges onthe “Windows Definition” screenand returnto the “File
Maintenance” menu.
Exit to the Master Menu.
Select “Initialize”
Select “Monitor”

Your NetGuardian should now be correctly set up within T/Mon.
To verify that your NetGuardian is being correctly polled by T/Mon, you may wish to
perform the check described below:
From the Alarm SummaryscreeninMonitor Mode, press Shift+F6 to reachthe Site Statistics
screen
Adjust view to NetGuardianpolling leg. Youshould see the number ofpolls rising as the new
NetGuardianis polled byT/Mon.
If the polls are failing, tryto ping the NetGuardian’s IP address.
If the NetGuardianresponds to pings but is not being polled correctly, check its configuration
settings. The most common errors are an incorrect TCP port or Unit ID.
