1 For your safety
1.1 General safety statements
Before using this product, carefully read the instructions for use.
Strictly follow the instructions for use. The user must fully
understand and strictly observe the instructions. Use the product
only for the purposes specified in the Intended use section of this
document.
Do not dispose of the instructions for use. Ensure that they are
retained and appropriately used by the product user.
Only trained and competent users are permitted to use this
product.
Comply with all local and national rules and regulations associated
with this product.
The thermal imaging camera is maintenance-free. However, it
should be inspected for proper functioning on a regular basis. Only
trained and competent personnel are permitted to inspect the
product as detailed in these instructions for use (see Chapter 5.2
on Page 25). Maintenance work which is not described in these
instructions for use only must be carried out by Dräger or by
specialized personnel trained by Dräger.
Use only genuine Dräger spare parts and accessories, or the
proper functioning of the product may be impaired.
Do not use a faulty or incomplete product. Do not modify the
product.
Notify Dräger in the event of any component fault or failure.
Electrical connections to devices which are not listed in these
instructions for use should only be made following consultation
with the respective manufacturers or an expert. If other
components are used, the intrinsic safety of the camera may be
compromised.
Devices or components for use in explosion hazard areas which
have been tested and approved according to national, European
or international Explosion Protection Regulations may be used
only under the conditions explicitly specified in the approval
documents and under consideration of the relevant legal
regulations.
If the camera is marked for group I (mining), it may be used in
applications where coal dust can be deposited in layers. The
maximum surface temperature of the camera is 130 °C (266°F)
even if a device fault should occur.
Any type of chemical based markings or paint on the device may
compromise the device safety. Dräger recommends encoding any
markings in the welcome screen. More detailed information can be
found in the online help of the PC software.

Description
2.2 Display
►Illustration on the fold-out page
The colors of the thermal image are displayed as defined in the
selected application mode (see Chapter 2.3.3 on Page 12).
The average temperature measured in the marked area is displayed
on the bottom right. The area in which the temperature is measured
depends on the distance to the measured objects. The larger the
distance to the measured objects, the larger the area in which the
temperature is measured becomes, and the less precise the
temperature information for the individual objects is. More precise
temperature measurements can be achieved by reducing the distance
to the object. The temperature is displayed in ° C or ° F, depending on
the settings. The temperature display can be changed using the
supplied PC software.
On the right side of the display a color scale with the temperature
range and the corresponding color display is shown. Normally the
color scale represents the temperatures from 110 °C (230 °F) to
130 °C (266 °F). The camera automatically switches to high
temperature mode if a large part of the displayed thermal image
exceeds 130 °C (266 °F). In this mode the color scale represents the
temperature range from 300 °C (572 °F) to more than 900 °C
(1650 °F).
Gray colors indicate temperatures below the lower threshold, red
colors indicate that the high temperature threshold is exceeded.
The following symbols may appear in the upper area of the display:

2.3 Functional description
2.3.1 Functions of the thermal imaging camera
The thermal imaging camera is a portable electronic device. It can be
used in fires and hazardous situations and in normal environments.
The thermal imaging camera is designed for use in heat, smoke and
spray water.
A brightness sensor adjusts the display brightness to the ambient
lighting conditions.
The thermal imaging camera has an automatic standby function. If the
thermal imaging camera is not held at the handle, the display initially
darkens by 50 %. The camera starts a countdown from 25 to 0, then
the display switches off. When the thermal imaging camera is held at
the handle, the display switches back on. You can use the supplied PC
software to disable the standby function.
The thermal imaging camera has a USB interface. Use a USB cable to
connect the thermal imaging camera to a PC. Live data of the thermal
imaging camera is then transferred to the computer. Use the supplied
computer software to change the basic settings of the thermal imaging
camera.
Use the supplied charging cradle for charging a rechargeable battery
in the thermal imaging camera or an additional rechargeable battery
(optional accessory). In stationary operation, the charging cradle can
be connected to the grid with a power supply unit that is included in the
delivery. A vehicle installation kit is available as an accessory for a
fixed installation in a vehicle. In this case, the charging cradle can be
connected to the power supply of the vehicle with a supplied
connection cable (included in the vehicle installation kit). If the thermal
imaging camera is used as a stationary device, it can be directly
connected to the power grid with the optional adapter.

prevent the camera from switching off.

Description
The functional principle of the thermal imaging cameras is the same;
however, the range of functions differs. The following functions are
possible:
(1) Laser pointer
(2) Snapshot function
Displays the thermal image as a snapshot.
(3) Overheat indicator
If the "Overheat indicator" symbol flashes, the thermal imaging
camera should be switched off or removed from the hot
environment. The higher the temperature in the camera, the longer
the symbol is displayed.
Once the maximum permissible temperature inside the camera is
reached, the thermal imaging camera switches off automatically.
(4) Two times digital zoom
(5) Four times digital zoom
(6) Image and sound storage
The thermal imaging camera can record image and sound data
and approx. 1000 single images for approx. 120 minutes.
Snapshot and videos with ambient noise can then be exported to
a PC via a USB cable for further processing.
The videos are stored in a ring buffer in the thermal imaging
camera which will be overwritten after about 120 minutes if the
camera is still switched on.

Use the video player to display the recorded videos directly on the
thermal imaging camera.

The thermal imaging cameras have the following functions:
CAUTION
The image quality may be impaired, the thermal image may
be lost, or the internal components may be damaged if the
thermal imaging camera is exposed to ambient temperatures
exceeding 60 °C (140 °F) without allowing it time to cool
down.
Sufficient cooling-down time must be provided between
usage cycles in environments with high temperatures.

2.3.2 Application modes of the thermal imaging camera
The standard application mode (TI BASIC) can easily be accessed
from any other application mode (see Section 3.4.6 on Page 21). The
following information is displayed in standard application mode:

The Dräger UCF 7000, UCF 8000 and UCF 9000 thermal imaging
cameras feature the following additional application modes (TI BASIC
PLUS):
(1) "Persons" application mode
Application mode used to search for and monitor persons.
Body heat is highlighted in this mode.
(2) "Fire" application mode (for firefighting)
This mode is used for detecting the source of a fire. Temperatures
of up to 1000 C (1832 °F) are displayed. Temperature differences
within hot areas are specially highlighted.
(3) "ThermalScan™" application mode
All temperatures above the set threshold are highlighted in color.
(4) "Outdoor" application mode
In this mode, small objects with temperatures between 0 °C
(32 °F) and 40 °C (104 °F) are highlighted. This mode is used to
find people outside, for example.
(5) "Hazmat" application mode
In this mode, small ambient temperature differences are shown
with higher contrast. This mode is used to find spilled liquids, for
example.
(6) "Scan PLUS" application mode
In this mode, the black and white image of the optical camera is
depicted on the display. Areas with temperatures above the set
threshold are depicted in color at the same time.
(7) "Visual" application mode
In this mode, the black and white image of the optical camera is
depicted on the display. This mode is used to document damage,
for example.
(8) "Custom 1" application mode
The PC software includes several color palettes from which one
can be selected.
NOTICE
Dräger UCF 6000 only has the standard application mode.
No other application mode can be selected.

Description
The thermal imaging cameras feature the following application modes: 2.3.3 Colorization of the application modes
If the temperature of an object is lower than the lowest temperature on
the color scale (= lower threshold), the object is displayed in grayscale.
Temperatures above the lowest value on the color scale are displayed
in shades of yellow, orange, or red (red indicating temperatures above
the upper threshold). The corresponding temperature is given on the
color scale.
Colorization of the application modes differs as follows:
Standard application mode (TI BASIC):
Objects with a temperature of up to 110 °C (230 °F) are displayed
in grayscale.
Low temperatures: shades of dark gray
High temperatures: shades of light gray
Temperatures between 110 °C (230 °F) and 130 °C (266 °F):
displayed in color according to the color scale.
If a significant part of the displayed image exceeds 130 °C
(266 °F), the camera switches to high temperature mode and the
corresponding symbol is shown in the upper area of the display.
In high temperature mode, temperatures up to 600 °C (1112 °F)
are displayed in grayscale. Temperatures between 600 °C
(1112 °F) and 900 °C (1652 °F) are displayed in color according to
the color scale.
"Persons" application mode:
Low temperatures: shades of dark gray
High temperatures: shades of light gray
Temperatures above 100 °C (212 °F): displayed in color according
to the color scale.
"Fire" application mode:
Low temperatures: shades of dark gray
High temperatures: shades of light gray
Temperatures above 600 °C (1112 °F): displayed in color

Low temperatures: shades of dark gray
High temperatures: shades of light gray
Temperatures above the set threshold: displayed in color
according to the color scale.
"Outdoor" application mode:
Temperatures between 0 °C (32 °F) and 40 °C (104 °F) are
displayed in grayscale with a high contrast:
Low temperatures: shades of light gray
High temperatures: shades of dark gray
Temperatures above 100 °C (212 °F): displayed in color according
to the color scale.
"Hazmat" application mode:
The thermal image is displayed in shades of color, where dark
colors indicate low temperatures and light colors indicate high
temperatures. There is no color scale.
"Scan PLUS" application mode:
Image of the optical camera only.
Temperatures above the set threshold: displayed in color
according to the color scale.
"Visual" application mode:
Image of the optical camera only.
"Custom 1" application mode:
The colors are assigned according to the user settings in the PC
software.
2.4 Intended use
The thermal imaging cameras are devices to support users in search
and rescue operations and firefighting if visibility is impaired due to
poor lighting conditions or smoke.
The following are possible uses:
Finding and rescuing people
Assessments of the situation and keeping fire watch
Assessments of the fire area
Locating the fire source
Identifying hot areas
Identifying potential flashover situations
Locating entry, exit and ventilation points
Accidents with hazardous substances
Large-scale, forest and bush fires
Monitoring tasks
Training
The Dräger UCF 7000, UCF 8000, and UCF 9000 thermal imaging
cameras are suitable for use in explosion-hazard areas (see
Chapter 2.6.1 on Page 14).

Description
2.5 Limitations on use
The thermal imaging cameras cannot see through glass or water.
Shiny and glossy surfaces (e. g. metal, glass) reflect thermal radiation
and can lead to loss of orientation if the user is not sufficiently trained
in using the camera.
2.6 Approvals
All thermal imaging cameras comply with European Directive
2014/30/EU (electromagnetic compatibility).
The protection class of the thermal imaging cameras according to
IEC 60529 is IP67.
The thermal imaging cameras feature a class 2 laser pointer
according to IEC EN 60 825-1 and 21 CFR 1040.10.
2.6.1 Approval for explosion-hazard areas
The thermal imaging cameras for use in explosion-hazard areas
feature an intrinsically safe design according to the following
standards:

2.7 Markings/Labeling
The startup screen displays the identification of the thermal imaging
camera (order number, serial number, and software version).
The order number, model name, and serial number can also be found
on a separate sheet enclosed in the packaging.
Order number and serial number are also indicated on the handle. The
year of manufacture is encrypted in the serial number. The year of
manufacture results from the third letter of the serial number: E = 2013,
F = 2014, H = 2015, J = 2016, K = 2017 etc. Example: Serial number
ARHH-0054: The third letter is H, which means the year of
manufacture is 2015.
NOTICE
The thermal imaging cameras have different approval
combinations. The approvals for each camera are specified
on the handle.

Use
3Use
3.1 General notes on using the thermal imaging
camera
The thermal imaging camera is not a life-supporting device and
must therefore not be used as such.
The operating time of every battery will be reduced if used in
environments with high or very low temperatures.
The rechargeable batteries supplied with the thermal imaging
camera were selected based on certain performance criteria. To
ensure reliable operation, only use the batteries specified in the
order list (see Section 9 on Page 27).
The thermal imaging camera is a complex electro-optical device
and may be subject to possible malfunctions like any other
electronic system. In case of camera failure, the user will not
receive thermal images anymore. When using this thermal
imaging camera on tactical missions, follow the procedures that
have been put in place for operations without a thermal imaging
camera.
All users must familiarize themselves with the proper function and
the performance limits of the thermal imaging camera before use.
This includes general understanding of thermal images and how
they are interpreted.
Dräger recommends Dräger Academy or third-party training, e. g.
at a firefighter school. Contact Dräger for additional information.
The thermal imaging camera may only be used by persons who
are familiar with its use and performance limits. This includes use
under simulated fire conditions (e. g. controlled fire situations).
Do not use the thermal imaging camera as the sole navigation
source. Otherwise, a malfunction of the device may cause loss of
orientation, injury or even death.
The thermal imaging camera features a class 2 laser pointer
(650 nm, visible red). The laser light may be dangerous for the
eyes. Do not look directly into the laser beam. Do not point the
laser at a person's head! Always switch off the laser pointer when
it is not used. A laser warning symbol in the display shows when
the laser pointer is active.

3.2 Preparation for use
3.2.1 Notes on the safe use of rechargeable batteries
Do not disassemble, open, manipulate or convert the
rechargeable battery.
Do not insert foreign objects into the rechargeable battery.
Do not drop, squeeze, bend, deform, puncture or shred the
rechargeable battery.
Do not expose the rechargeable battery to excessive heat or put it
in a microwave oven.
3.2.2 Preparing the charging cradle

supply unit into the bottom of

charging cradle.
To release the power cable
from the charging cradle, press
the holder (1) and pull the plug
from the charging cradle.
3.2.3 Charging the rechargeable batteries
Prior to first use, each new rechargeable battery must be charged fully.
A new, fully charged battery allows 4 hours of operation under normal
conditions. The operating time depends on several factors, (e. g.
ambient temperature, brightness of image, image content) and may
vary accordingly. Nevertheless, the operating time is independent of
the application mode.
Dräger recommends to insert a fully charged battery into the thermal
imaging camera before use.
Charge the battery as follows:
1. Insert the power supply unit into the bottom of the charging cradle.
2. Connect the charging cradle to the power grid using the power
supply unit.
3. Place the thermal imaging camera and/or a rechargeable battery
into the charging cradle.
The typical charging time is 3 hours.
WARNING
Improper use of rechargeable batteries can cause fires,
explosions and other hazards.

WARNING
The charger must not come into contact with water.
Otherwise short-circuiting can occur.
Do not charge camera and batteries in areas subject to
explosion hazards. Otherwise, an explosion may occur.
CAUTION
Charge the battery at an ambient temperature of 10 °C to
35 °C (50 °F to 95 °F). The charger stops charging and
indicates an error to prevent damage to the rechargeable
battery when temperatures exceed this range. The charger
continues charging as soon as temperatures reach the
permissible range again.

Use
The LEDs on the charging cradle provide the following information:
To ensure that a fully charged battery is available at all times, Dräger
recommends always placing the rechargeable battery into the
charging cradle when it is not in use. Loss of capacity due to a memory
effect will not occur. If the rechargeable battery/thermal imaging
camera is left in the charger, the charger will recharge the battery from
time to time to ensure that it is always fully charged when needed. This
will not damage the battery.
When the battery is fully charged, the battery icon shows 4 green bars.
The battery icon changes in relation to the charging status:
3 green bars: battery power amounts to 75 %
2 orange bars: battery power amounts to 50 %
1 red bar: battery power amounts to 25 %
Replace the battery as soon as possible.
1 red flashing bar: There are only 5 minutes left until the thermal
imaging camera will switch off.
Replace the battery immediately.
3.2.4 Changing the battery
1. Loosen the screws under the
handle with the supplied Allen
key.
2. To push the old battery from the
handle, slide the Allen key
through the opening in the
handle.
3. Remove the old battery.
4. Make sure the seal on the new
battery is clean. If necessary,
wipe the contact surface with a
lint-free cloth.
5. Insert the new battery into the
handle of the thermal imaging
camera.
6. Tighten the screws.

The battery is charging.

3.2.5 Attaching the crawling plate to the camera (optional)
The thermal imaging camera always includes the crawling plate. It can
be used with or without crawling plate. Mount the crawling plate to the
handle as follows:
Insert the camera handle into the crawling plate, and screw it into
the tripod mount.
3.2.6 Attaching the crawling plate in the charging cradle
(optional)
If the camera is used without the crawling plate, the crawling plate
should be stored in the charging cradle as a mechanical adapter:
1. Remove the tripod screw from the crawling plate.
2. Push the screw through the crawling plate from the top and screw
it to the charging cradle.
3.2.7 Attaching the carrying strap (optional)
Hook the hand strap or
retractable lanyard to the lug
in the handle (1).
or
Hook the neck strap to both
lugs on the side of the camera
(2).
NOTICE
If the camera with crawling plate is to be mounted to a tripod,
screw the tripod to the crawling plate.

3.2.8 Installing the PC software
The operation of the PC software requires knowledge in the handling
of a PC with Microsoft Windows.
1. Insert the CD into the CD drive.
2. Select the "PC Software UCF Series" option in the window
opening next.
3. Follow the instructions of the installation wizard.
The required program components are installed in the selected
directory and an entry is created in the Start menu.
A shortcut labeled "PC Software UCF Series" is created on the
desktop.
3.3 Before use
3.3.1 Inspecting the thermal imaging camera
Perform a visual inspection of the thermal imaging camera and all
accessories:
There must be no damage or missing parts.
Remove any condensation from the lens with a soft cloth.
NOTICE
The user must have administrator rights for the PC to install
the software.
The PC must meet the minimum requirements of the "UCF
Series" PC software. The minimum requirements are
indicated on the CD label.
NOTICE
If this window does not open, access the CD drive in Explorer
and open the "start.html" file manually.

NOTICE
Dräger recommends not to make any changes to the default
settings during installation.
The user must log in to use the PC software. The user name
is "Admin", the password is "draeger". The necessity to log in
can be disabled in the PC software. Simply activate the
"Automatic log-on" option in "Options - Configuration". The
user is no longer required to log in after the software has been
restarted.
Additional information about the PC software can be found in
the online help.

3.4 During use
3.4.1 Switching the thermal imaging camera on and off (all
cameras)
Press the ON/OFF key for approx. 3 seconds to switch the thermal
imaging camera on.
The startup screen appears, then the thermal image is displayed.
The thermal imaging camera is in standard application mode.
To switch the thermal imaging camera off, press the ON/OFF key
until 3-2-1 appears on the display and the thermal imaging camera
switches off.
3.4.2 Activating the snapshot function (all cameras)
Hold down the snapshot button to activate the snapshot function.
The picture remains "frozen" and does not change as long as the
snapshot key is pressed. In the Dräger UCF 7000, UCF 8000, and
UCF 9000, the image is stored simultaneously.
3.4.3 Using the laser pointer (all cameras)
The laser pointer function is activated differently for the different
thermal imaging cameras:
Dräger UCF 6000:
Press the laser pointer button briefly.
Dräger UCF 7000, UCF 8000, UCF 9000:
Press the "Right arrow/laser pointer" button briefly.
The laser pointer symbol is displayed in the bottom display bar. Point
the camera towards the object to be marked.
Briefly press the same key again to switch off the laser pointer. The
laser pointer symbol in the bottom display bar disappears.
3.4.4 Stationary operation of the thermal imaging camera (all
cameras)
If the thermal imaging camera is to be used as a stationary device, a
tripod can be used as mounting device.
Screw the tripod into the bottom of the handle.
If the crawling plate is attached to the camera, screw the tripod into
the crawling plate.
NOTICE
The startup screen displays the identification of the thermal
imaging camera (order number, serial number and software
version).
The thermal imaging camera enters standby mode if it is not
held at the handle (see Chapter 2.3.1 on Page 9). Only the
display, but not the thermal imaging camera, is switched off in
standby mode. Hold the camera at the handle to switch the
display on again.
This function can be disabled in the PC software. Simply
remove the "Standby Detection Enabled" checkmark on the
"Camera - Settings" tab.

CAUTION
The laser light may be dangerous for the eyes.
Do not look directly into the laser beam. Do not point the laser
at a person's head! Always switch off the laser pointer when
it is not used.
