Introduction
Thankyou for purchasingaDrayTekproduct. The VigorSwitchV1281 isa
Gigabit Ethernet switchoptimizedfor theswitchingof A/Vsignals over IP. The
V1281isdesigned withan intuitiveand easyto useinterface for both installers
andtheenduserswhowill beusingtheproduct. AsaGigabit switch,aswell as
handlingyour A/Vswitching,itcan alsobeusedfor yournetworking(Data/LAN)
requirements,connectingregularLANcomponentsat full Gigabit speed, isolated
from theA/Vsignals sothatthereisno performance impact.

Principles of Operation
Althoughyou mayhaveusedDrayTekswitchesfor regular networkingapplications
previously,the V1281 isdifferent becauseit’sdesigned for switchingA/V.
SourcesandOutputs
Throughout thisQuickSetupGuideand alsowithintheV1281’sadmin interfacewe
will refer to sources and outputs.
•A source isanydevicewhich isprovidingavideoor audiooutput–most
commonlyaDVD/Blu-rayplayer,asatellite receiverorotherset-topboxora
CCTVsystem.
•An output iswhatyou’ll bewatchingorlisteningon,such asaTV, aprojector
or an amplifier/receiver.
Also, in oursetupguidesandintheswitch GUI wewill generallycolourcode sources
in red and outputs ingreen to aidwith illustration andclarity.

HDMIvs.Ethernet Cabling
LikeanyEthernet switch,the V1281 hasRJ-45 socketson the front, not HDMI.
AlthoughnativeHDMIswitchesdo exist, cablelengthsarelimitedand thecables
themselvesaremorecostlyandcomplex towireup.
UsingEthernet meansyou uselowcostCAT5e(or higher)cablewhich often already
existsin alocation.Ifyou usefibreopticcable,Ethernet can carryfor many
kilometersif needed;the VigorSwitch can supportup to 4SFPfibremodules.
UsingCAT5ealsomeansthat the V1281 isveryscalable–you can add asmanyorfew
sourcesor outputsasyou needup to themaximum number ofports whereaswith a
nativeHDMIswitch,it will haveafixednumber of ports,whichyou payfor whether
you needthemornot. With the V1281 yourAVsignals can alsosharethenetworkor
networkinginfrastructurewithyour data networkingfor PCsor other devices.

ConvertingHDMIto IP –UsingExtenders
The source’sHDMIoutput hasto beconvertedintoaTCP/IP stream which can be
handledbythe V1281 andto connect to CAT5eRJ-45 connections(orCAT6). Forthis
you needan HDMIto IPadaptor (or ‘extender). Theseareavailablefrom many
vendorsandDrayTekhaveour ownmodel,theHVE290.Pricesvaryconsiderable
dependingon features,brand/qualityandresolution or picturequality.
A VigorSwitch V1281 might, for example,havetwosources(e.g.twosatellite
receivers)andeightTVsaroundthepremises,or it mighthavetensourcesandjust
twoscreens–you canhaveanycombination, providingjustthe right number of
converters/extenderssoyou’renot payingfor HDMIportsyou don’t need–you just
purchasethe right number of HDMI-to-IP convertors.
Astherearemanysimilar lookingproducts,itisessentialisthat theHDMI-to-IP
adaptor/extender that you usesupportsIP. Somedevicescan sendan HDMIsignal
overCAT5/CAT6cable,butusingaproprietarymethod, andnot IPorEthernet. That
typeofdevice will not workwith theVigorSwitchV1281 andmayeven causedamage
sopleasebesurethatthe device you connectusesIP and Ethernet
(10/100/1000BaseT). Anyadditionalfunctionsor features,such as IR(infra-red)
pass-through, RS-232 pass-through, HDMIloop-through, maximumresolutionor the
typeof codecusedwilldependon your requirementsandbudget. Alsoconsider
howthe extendersarepoweredandwhetheryou needto rackmount them.

VigorSwitch Installation
Rack-Mounted or Desktop
The VigorSwitchV1281can sit on adesk or shelf;pleasefit therubber feet
(supplied)onlyif you will beusingit in that way.If you will bemountingthe
switch in astandard19” rack,attach the rackmount ‘ears’toeachsideof the
switch usingthe screwsprovided. Donot useanyotherscrews.Tighten securely.
You canthen fit the switch toyour rack.Mountinghardwarefor that isnot
suppliedand will depend on your racktype.

Topology and HardwareInstallation
InstallingandconfiguringyourVigorSwitch V1281shouldbeverystraightforward
if you plan carefullyandareclearabout your network/AVtopology.
Beforestarting,ensurethatyou knowhowmany sources (SatelliteReceivers,
Blu-Ray,DVD,STBetc.)you will haveandhowmany outputs (screens/projectors)
you’ll befeedingto. You will need anHDMI-to-IP sender foreach sourceanda
receiver for eachoutput (see previoussection).
Intheexamplebelow,apub haswith threesource deviceson the leftandfour
output screenson the right:
Forthisexample,youwouldneed threeHDMI-over-IP sendersandfourreceivers.
AnyportontheV1281can bedefinedasone of threemodes(source,outputor
LAN) soit doesn’t matterwhichportyou select foryoursourcesoroutputs.Later,
when you configuretheV1281,you willallocate each port’sfunction.

Colouredcablesareusedonlyfor illustration – Red areour sources, Green our
outputs andthe Purple cablesareLAN(networkingconnections)for PCs,routers,
uplinks,wireless basesetc.Remember,anyportcanbesetto anyof those
functionsbut we’vegroupedtheminthisphotograph because it’ssimpler(and looks
pretty). Also, you won’t necessarilyhave4+4+3 –you can haveanycombination.
DeviceConnection
Connectan HDMI-to-IP sender unit to each source device (Set-top boxes,DVD
playersetc.). Thesender unitswill alsoneedpower (not shown).Connectthe
Ethernet end of the sender toyour VigorSwitch V1281.Inthe examplephotobelow,
wehaveusedtwosatellite TVreceiversasthesources:

Connectan HDMI-to-IP receiver unit to all output devices(TVsorProjectors)and
connectanEthernet cablefromthe receiverunit to the VigorSwitchV1281 (via your
structuredcablingorRJ-45 socketsaround thebuildingetc.).Receiverunitswill also
needpower (not shown):
HDMI-to-IP senders and receivers lookalikesodoublecheckyou havethemtheright
wayaround. Senders connectto your source (e.g.DVDplayer)and receivers
connectto your output (e.g.television).
ConnectyourVigorSwitch V1281 to yourcomputernetwork(wesuggestusingport1).
You canconnect aPC tothe VigorSwitch ifyouwant to usethat forconfiguration, or
you canuseawireless laptop if youhaveWiFion your LAN.
Note downwhat isconnected to eachportonthe V1281,especiallyif you won’t be
ableto seetheswitch from whereyou’regoingto configureit. Wealsorecommend
thatyou labelall cablesandHDMIextenderswhich will makechangeseasier later.

Switch Configuration
Your VigorSwitchV1281 isconfiguredand controlledfromitswebinterface.
The webinterfaceis‘responsive’whichmeansit will dynamicallyadapttodifferent
browsers,devicesandscreen sizes(e.g.phones,PCsor tablets). For the initial
configuration it’squicker andeasierto useaPC with akeyboard/mouse.
Ifyou connected the VigorSwitch V1281 to yournetwork(see earlier), the V1281 will
obtain itsownIP address from your networkDHCP server (your router or other
device providingDHCP). You will nowneedto locatetheIP addressthat theswitch
hasbeengivenin order to access itswebinterface.
LocatetheVigorSwitch’sIP Address
If you haveWireless LAN(WiFi)on your
network,you can usethe companion app for
iOS or Android(Searchfor “DrayTekAV
Switch”on the app stores).
Ensurethatyour phoneisconnectedto the
correct WiFinetwork.
Clickthe ‘Discover’button in the app and will
locatetheV1281 andtell you itsIP address
(theapp won’t doanythingelseyet).
You canalsousethe Windows “DrayTekDevice
Finder”utility(downloadfromour website)
which will locatetheswitch onthenetwork.
Eitherway,note downthe V1281’sIP address.

Ifyou can’tusetheappandyourrouteractsasyourDHCP server,you can checkthe
router’s‘DHCP table’to locate the switch(the VigorSwitch’sMACaddress willstart
00-1D-AA…). The DHCP tableistypicallyunder adiagnosticsmenuon mostrouters.
If you areusingaDrayTekrouter,you can alsousethe “ExternalDevice”menu to
discover andshowtheswitch’sIP address.
IfyourV1281switch cannot get anaddress byDHCP, it willassumea
defaultaddress of 192.168.1.224.A PC connecteddirectlyto the
switch,withafixed/staticIP address in the samesubnet (e.g.
192.168.1.10)willbeableto access the switch’sGUIin orderto set
itsIP address manually.
AccesstheVigorSwitch’sWeb Interface(GUI)
Once you knowtheswitch’sIP address you can access itswebinterface.Open
your browser (Firefox,Edge,Chrome,Safarietc.) and intheaddress bar,type
https://192.168.1.50 (replace that address with your actualaddress located
earlier). Notethat weprefix with https to force aTLS encryptedconnection.
Werecommendalwaysusingencryptionto access networkdevices.
Note:Asyou arerequestinganhttps(TLS encrypted) connection,your browser
will tryto validatethecertificate againstyour switch’sdynamicLANIP address,
which will fail.If you’veenteredthecorrectaddress for theswitch, you can
proceedpastthismessage(whichwill varydependingon yourbrowser). Youmay
needto press ‘Advanced’ to get tothe ‘continue’linkandthen permit access or
add anexception. If you can’t usehttps,usehttpin the address bar instead.
The Login screen shouldnowappear for yourVigorSwitch.Thedefaultadmin
usernameis‘admin’and thepasswordisalso‘admin’. You should changethis
immediately (you willbeinvitedto do sobythe switch). Remember your new
adminpassword–thereisno wayto recoverit or access the switch otherwise.

Weneedto set the function of theports,butrather than havingtoediteach
individually,the top pulldown‘Ports’boxallows you to select multipleportsand
applythe samefunction to themall at once,sohereweselectports9,11,13
and15,select the ‘Source’buttonandclick‘apply’.
Nowyou cando the samefor theoutputs17,19 and21.Select those,select
‘Output’ and click‘apply’:
You maynotice the ‘AllowLANAccess’checkbox for output ports.Donot click
thisunless you needtosharethe output’sEthernet cablewith adata device.
Remember that theportnumbersusedintheseimagescorrespondto our
exampleasshowninthe originaltable.Yourportnumbersand the functionof
eachwill,of course,becompletelydifferent.
Nowyou canedit the ports
individuallyto givethem
correspondingnames.

UserOperation
If the portshavebeen set up and all of yoursources,output devices are
connected, theVigorSwitch V1281 isreadytouse.Remember toselect the
correct HDMIinput on your screens/TVs/monitors.
You cannowselectanyof your sourcesfromanyoutput device –your TVsor
projectorsaround your home,office orother premises.
You canselect sourceseither fromthe webinterface(the sameGUIwhich you
usedto configuretheswitch)orbyusingthe DrayTekAVS app on aphoneor
other compatiblemobiledevice.
Withintherouter’sGUI, you canusethe SourceSelection menu:
If you areusingtheDrayTekAVS app onyourmobiledevice,thathasthe same
function, allowingyouto select your sourcefor each output (room/TV).
Regular (non-admin) usersshouldbegiven ausernameandpasswordwhich does
not haveadministrator privileges,otherwise theycan login and changethe
switch configuration. Onlyadminscan disableaporttemporarily(e.g.ifit’s
bedtime!). Userscan sharethe samenon-admin login,or you can set different
loginsfor each user.Userscan berestrictedto controllingonlyspecificoutputs
or beableto selectonlycertainsources.
