Quick Start Guide
Follow thesesteps to install theLabelWriter printer andprintyour firstlabel.
1. Unpacking your LabelWriter Printer
NOTE Do not plug the printer into your computer until asked to do so during the
software installation.
1Unpack your printer andsavethepacking materials.
2Make sure youhaveall theitems shown in Figure 1. (Labels included in the
packagemay vary.)

Becomefamiliar with theprinter’s majorcomponents. See Figure 2.
LabelWriter Printer Features
Your LabelWriter printer is adirect thermal printer anddoes notuseinkortoner.
Instead, theprinter uses heat from athermal printhead to printon specially
treated labels. Labels are theonly supplies youwill ever need to buy.
Theform-feed button on thefrontof theprinter advances asinglelabel. Thelabel
eject button is used to removelabels from theprinter when changing rolls.
TheLED status lightvisually shows thecurrentstate of theprinter:
•Solid blue - power is on andtheprinter is ready.
•Flashing blue - labels are notloaded properly orlabel spool is empty.

2. Installing the Software
NOTE Do not connect the printer to your computer until instructed to do so during
the software installation.
To install the software on a Windows system
1Insert theLabelWriter CD into your CD-ROM drive. After afew seconds, the
installation screen appears.
If theinstallation screen does notappear:
a. Click Start, then Run on theWindows taskbar. TheRun dialog box
appears.
b. Enter D:\install.exe (where D is theletter assigned to theCD-ROM drive)
andclick OK.
2Click Install andfollow theinstructions in theinstaller.
To install the software on a Mac OS system
1Insert theDYMO LabelWriter CD into theCD-ROM drive.
After afew seconds, theDYMO Label Software Installer
icon appears. See Figure 3.
2Double-click theInstaller icon andfollow theinstructions.
If youdo notsee your printer in theprinter listwhen theinstallation is
complete, refer to theReadMefileforinstructions on how to add theprinter.

3. Connecting your LabelWriter Printer
NOTE Do not connect the printer to your computer
until instructed to do so during the software
installation.
To connect the power
1Plug thepower cord into thepower adapter.
See Figure 4.
2Plug thepower adapter into thepower connector
on thebottom of theprinter. See Figure 5.
3Plug theother endof thepower cord into a
power outlet.
4Plug theUSB cableinto theUSB port on the
bottom of theprinter. See Figure 5.
5Insert thepower andUSB cables through the
cablechannel andset theprinter down.
NOTE DO NOT CONNECT the other end of the USB cable to
your computer until asked to do so during the software
installation.
6When prompted by thesoftware installer, plug theUSB
cableinto aUSB port.

4. Loading Labels
To load a label roll
1Press theform-feed button to eject thelabels that
protected theprinter during shipment.
2Open thetop cover andremoveany packing
material inside thelabel compartment.
3Removethelabel spool from inside thecover.
4Holdthespool spindlein your lefthandandplace the
label roll on thespindleso that thelabels feed from
underneath andtheleftedgeof thelabel roll is flush
againsttheside of thespool. See Figure 7.
5Place thespool guide onto therightside of thespool
andpress theguide tightly againsttheside of the
label roll, leaving no gap between theroll andthespool. See Figure 8.
NOTE The label roll must fit snugly against both sides of the
label spool, with no gaps, to avoid drifting as the labels feed
through the printer.
6Insert thelabel spool into theslotin theprinter cover with
thelabels extending from underneath theroll. See Figure 9.

7Align theleftedgeof thelabel with theleftedgeof the
label feed slotandinsert thelabel into theslot. See
Figure 10.
Theprinter feeds thelabels, stopping at thebeginning
of thefirstlabel. If theprinter does notfeed thelabels,
make sure thefirstlabel is fully inserted andthen press
theform-feed button.
8Closethetop cover.
Youare now ready to printyour firstlabel.
5. Printing your First Label
To print your first label
1Start DYMO Label Software by doing oneof thefollowing:
•ForWindows, click Start, then Programs>DYMO Label>DYMO Label.
•ForMacintosh, double-click in theDYMO Label folder.
Thefirsttimeyouopen theapplication, youare asked to register the
software. Registering thesoftware ensures that youwill beinformed of any
software updates. Youare also asked to enter your defaultreturn address.
2Atthemain window, click once on thelabel andtypesometext.
3Chooseafontandajustification setting from theFormatting toolbar.
4Click to printthelabel.

addresses, pictures,
rectangles, lines,
barcodes, dates, or
counters.

Clipboard.
Store your favorite
addresses in the
Address Book;
automatically insert
them on your label.

switch between the

DYMO Stamps™
Youcan now printpostagerightfrom your desktop using your LabelWriter 400
Turbo label printer. All youneed is DYMO Stamps™software, your LabelWriter
printer, DYMO Stamps labels, andan Internet connection.
To install DYMO Stamps and print postage
1Sign up foryour USPSaccountwith Endicia. Go to:
www.endicia.com/dymostamps
2Attheendof thesign up process, download andinstall theDYMO Stamps
software.
DYMO Stamps software is availableforboth Windows andMac OSX.
NOTE You must have DYMO Label Software and your LabelWriter printer
installed before installing the DYMO Stamps software.
Thefirsttimeyoustart theDYMO
Stamps software, youare prompted
to enter thepostageaccount
number assigned andthepass
phraseyoucreated during thesign-
up process.
3Enter your accountnumber and
pass phrase, andthen click OK.

4Select Buy Postage from the
Account menuandpurchase
postageforyour account.
5Select DYMO LabelWriter 400
Turbo from thePrinter drop-
down listunder Printer
Selection.
6Click Test Print to printa
voided postagelabel.
Youare now ready to start printing
actual postagewhenever youneed
it. Refer to theDYMO Stamps online
Help formore information about
using thesoftware.
Youcan add postage, buy DYMO Stamps postagelabels, andorder supplies
directly from within theDYMO Stamps software.
