Model HH-10 : Hand-Held Metalarm™Metal Detector
The Eriez Model HH-10 Hand-held Metalarm Metal
Detector is a portable device designed to detect small
pieces of metal in a wide range of products. It is
particularly valuable in a situation where a stationary
metal detector, with high sensitivity in a shallow field,
is used to scan a large or wide product flow such as
sheet goods or textiles, and where the stationary
detector can localize metal pieces only within a fairly
broad area. The hand-held detector can then be used
to isolate the detected metal contaminants precisely
within the area identified by the fixed detector.
Installation
The detector should be used and stored only in a dry
environment with an ambient temperature between
0°C and 50°C (32°F and 122°F). When applicable,
prepare a non-metallic surface onto which the product
to be scanned can be placed for checking.
Plug the power supply into the nearest 110
or 230 VAC power outlet. Note that the metal detector
does not incorporate an ON/OFF switch. It is energized
as soon as the power supply is plugged in. If you
want to leave the detector plugged in but turned off,
the power outlet itself must be switched.
General Operation
The detector will “beep” and the green “ON” LED will
illuminate when power is supplied.
Check for proper operation by passing a metal test piece
over the base of the detector. When the test piece is
detected the red “DETECT” LED should illuminate and
an audible alarm should sound. The detector is now
ready for use.
The sensing area of the detector is located in the base
of the unit directly below the DETECT LED. You can
determine the effective size of the detection area for
your set of circumstances by turning the detector on
and checking on the base (flat) side of the unit for the
area of response.
To detect small metal objects, hold the detector base as
close as possible to the object being scanned. For very
large objects you can hold the base as far as 90-100mm
(3.5"- 4.0") from the object metal. The detector will not
sense metal, even very large pieces, at distances
greater than about 100mm (4"). We recommend that you
conduct trials to determine the most effective way of
scanning your particular product to be certain of
detecting your typical metal contamination.

Note that when a large metal signal is received by the
detector it may “lock up” for a short period of time. That
is, the alarm signal may not switch off immediately when
the detector is moved away from the metal. This is
normal behavior, and the detector will quickly
reset itself.
The detector may be left ON continuously if desired.
However, the unit activates an auto-zero procedure each
time it is plugged in, and therefore it is preferable to
unplug it when the unit will not be needed for a
long period.
Operation (cont.) Maintenance
The HH-10 requires no maintenance or calibration.
However, it should be handled and stored as precision
electronic equipment. Do not attempt to gain access
to the interior of the unit as this will invalidate the
warranty. Do not immerse or expose the HH-10 to
direct water spray.
