appliances, devices, or systems where malfunction of the product can reasonably be
expected to result in a personal injury. Customers using or selling these products for use
in such applications do so at their own risk and agree to fully indemnify the manufacturer
and supplier for any damages resulting from such improper use or sale.
•Electro static discharge does inflict irreparable damage to electronics! Before installing or
opening the F110-A, the installer has to discharge himself by touching a well-grounded
object.
•The F110-A must be installed in accordance with the EMC guidelines (Electro Magnetic
Compatibility).
•Connect a proper grounding to the metal enclosure as indicated if the F110-A has an
incoming power or signal line which carries a hazardous live voltage.
The Protective Earth (PE) wire may never be disconnected or removed.
•Intrinsically Safe applications: follow the instructions as mentioned in Chapter 5.

▪The following chapters and appendices are exclusively meant for electricians/technicians. These
provide a detailed description of all software settings and hardware installation guidance.
This manual describes the standard unit as well as the available options. For additional information,
please contact your supplier.

1 INTRODUCTION
1.1 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION
Functions and features
The flow rate / totalizer model F110-A is a microprocessor driven instrument designed to show the
flow rate, the total and the accumulated total.
This product has been designed with a focus on:
▪ultra-low power consumption to allow long-life battery powered applications (type PB/PC)
▪intrinsic safety for use in hazardous applications (type XI)
▪several mounting possibilities with aluminum or GRP enclosures for harsh industrial
surroundings
▪ability to process all types of flowmeter signals
▪transmitting possibilities with analog / pulse and communication outputs.
Flowmeter input
This manual describes the unit with a (0)4-20mA input from the flowmeter. Other versions are
available to process pulse signals.
One flowmeter with a (0)4-20mA signal output can be connected to the F110-A. To power the
sensor, several options are available.
Standard outputs
▪Pulse output to transmit a pulse that represents a totalized quantity as programmed.
▪Linear (0)4-20mA or 0-10V analog output to represent the actual flow rate as programmed. The
(0)4-20mA or 0-10V signal limits can be tuned.

Configuration of the unit
The F110-A is designed for use in many types of applications. For that reason, a setup menu is
available to program the F110-A according to your specific requirements.
The setup includes several important features, such as span, engineering units, signal selection,
power management (to extend battery life-time), etc. All settings are stored in a non-volatile memory
and therefore saved in the event of a power failure or an exhausted battery.
Display information
The unit has a LCD with (optional) backlight to show the process information, status and alarm
messages. The display refresh rate is programmed in the setup menu.
At a key press, the display refresh rate will switch to FAST for 30 seconds. When 'OFF' is selected,
the display goes off after 30 seconds after the last key press. The display temporarily comes on after
a key press.
A backup of the total and accumulated total in EEPROM memory is made every minute.
Options
The following options are available: isolated or active (0)4-20mA / 0-10V analog output, full Modbus
communication RS232/485/TTL (also battery powered), intrinsic safety, mechanical relay or active
output, power- and sensor-supply options, panel mount, wall mount and weather proof enclosures,
flame proof enclosure and LED backlight.

2 OPERATIONAL
2.1 GENERAL INFORMATION
This chapter describes the daily use of the F110-A. This instruction is meant for users / operators.
•This device may only be operated by persons who are authorized and trained by the
operator of the facility. All instructions in this manual are to be observed.
•Take careful notice of the "Safety rules, instructions and precautionary measures" in the
front of this manual.
2.2 CONTROL PANEL
The control panel has three keys. The following keys are available:

Functions of the keys
PROG-key
This key is used to program and save new values or settings.
The PROG-key is also used to gain access to SETUP-level; please read chapter 3.
SELECT-key
This key is used to SELECT the displayed information, like accumulated total and flow
rate.
CLEAR-key
This key is used to CLEAR the value of total.
2.3 OPERATOR INFORMATION AND FUNCTIONS
In general, the F110-A will always function at Operator level. The information displayed is dependent
upon the SETUP-settings. The signal from the connected sensor is processed by the F110-A in the
background, whichever screen refresh rate setting is chosen. After pressing a key, the display will be
updated very quickly during a 30 second period, after which it will slow-down again.

For the Operator, the following functions are available:
▪Display flow rate / total or flow rate
This is the main display information of the F110-A. After the selection of any other information, it
will always return to this main display automatically. Total is shown on the upper line of the
display and flow rate on the bottom line. When selected in the setup menu, the display shows the
flow rate only. When you press the select key, the total shows momentarily.
When "-------" is shown, then the flow rate value is too high to be shown. The arrows indicate
the increase/decrease of the flow rate trend.

▪Clear total
The value for total can be reset. To do so, press the CLEAR/key twice. When the key is
pressed once, the text "PUSH CLEAR" is shown. To avoid a reset at this stage, press another
key other than the CLEAR/key or wait for 20 seconds. A reset of the total does not influence
the accumulated total.
Type IB: When a Normally Closed (NC) contact is used, the local clear total function is disabled
and a clear total is only possible with the external reset command.
▪Display accumulated total
When the SELECT/key is pressed, total and accumulated total are shown. The accumulated
total cannot be reset. The value will count up to 99,999,999,999. The unit and number of
decimals are shown according to the settings for the total.
▪Low-battery alarm
When the battery voltage drops, the "low-battery" icon will be displayed continuously. The battery
MUST be replaced shortly after!
The remaining lifetime after the first moment of indication is generally several days up to some
weeks. See paragraph 6.3 for further information on battery replacement.

3 CONFIGURATION
3.1 INTRODUCTION
This and the following chapters are exclusively meant for electricians and non-operators. In these,
an extensive description of all software settings and hardware connections are provided.
•Mounting, electrical installation, start-up and maintenance of this device may only be
carried out by trained persons authorized by the operator of the facility. Persons must
read and understand this manual before carrying out its instructions.
•This device may only be operated by persons who are authorized and trained by the
operator of the facility. All instructions in this manual are to be observed.
•Make sure, the measuring system is correctly wired up according to the wiring diagrams.
Protection against accidental contact is no longer assured when the enclosure cover is
removed or the panel cabinet has been opened (danger from electrical shock). The
enclosure may only be opened by trained persons authorized by the operator of the
facility.
•Take careful notice of the "Safety rules, instructions and precautionary measures" in the
front of this manual.
3.2 PROGRAMMING SETUP-LEVEL
Changing the settings of the F110-A may have an influence on the current operation of the
device, even when SETUP-level is still active.
Make sure that the unit is not being used for any application when altering the settings.
3.2.1 ENTERING SETUP-LEVEL
Configuration of the F110-A is done at SETUP-level, which can be reached at all times while the
F110-A remains fully operational. At SETUP-level the display will deactivate the RUN indicator and
activate the SETUP indicator.
Use the control panel to access SETUP-level
PROG-key
To enter SETUP-level, press the PROG-key for 7 seconds at OPERATOR-level.
During this time, the symbols  will be displayed.
When SETUP-level is entered, a password might be required to continue. You can
enter the password by following the procedure for programming values as described in
the following paragraphs.
A password may be required to enter SETUP.
Without this password access to SETUP is denied.
3.2.2 NAVIGATING THROUGH SETUP-LEVEL
Each function has a unique menu-number, which is displayed below the SETUP indicator at the
bottom of the display. The menu-number is a combination of two figures, e.g. 1.2. The first number
indicates the function-group and the second number indicates the function. Additionally, each
function and function-group is expressed with a keyword.

Use the control panel to navigate through SETUP-level
PROG-key
When a function is selected, this key is used to start the programming sequence.
When only a function group is selected (and no function), this key is used to scroll back
a function group (e.g. 3 →2 →1 →3).
SELECT-key
This key is used to select the next function in the list (e.g. 1 →1.1 →1.2 →1). When
the top of the list is reached, it will wrap around and return to the function group
selection.
CLEAR-key
This key is used to select the previous function in the list (e.g. 1.2 →1.1 →1 →2).
When the bottom of the list is reached, it will return to the function group selection.
When only a function group is selected (and no function), this key is used to scroll to
the next function group. (e.g. 1 →2 →3 →1).
3.2.3 PROGRAMMING SEQUENCE
After selecting a function at SETUP-level, a new value can be programmed using the control panel.
A function either contains a value (a number with optionally a decimal point, e.g. 123.45) or a list
with items (e.g. Disable Enable).
For each function that needs to change, navigate to that function and follow the steps indicated
below. During the programming sequence, the display will deactivate the SETUP indicator and
activate the PROGRAM indicator.
When programming new values, alterations will only be set after the PROG-key has been
pressed to confirm the new value! (STEP 3)
Step 1: Starting the programming sequence
PROG-key
When a function is selected at SETUP-level, this key is used to start the programming
sequence.
Step 2a: Changing a value
SELECT-key
This key is used to increment the selected digit.
When the entered value is out of range, the increase sign or decrease-sign will
be displayed while you are programming. If this value is confirmed by pressing the
PROG-key, the value will be brought within a valid range automatically.
CLEAR-key
This key is used to select the next digit. If a decimal point can be set, this will be
included in the sequence as well (e.g. [decimal point] →digit 1 →digit 2→digit 3 →
[decimal point].
SELECT-key + CLEAR-key
The combination of the SELECT-key and CLEAR-key is used to select a negative
value. When a value can also be entered as a negative number, pressing the SELECT-
key and CLEAR-
Step 2b: Changing the selected item in a list
SELECT-key
This key is used to select the next item in the list (e.g. Disable →Enable).
At the end of the list, the selection will wrap around to the first selection.
CLEAR-key
This key is used to select the previous item in the list (e.g. Enable →Disable ).
At the bottom of the list, the selection will wrap around to the last selection.
Step 3: Finishing the programming sequence
PROG-key
During the programming sequence, this key is used to confirm the new value and
return to SETUP-level. To cancel the operation, either press the PROG-key for 3
seconds or wait for 20 seconds: the programming sequence is cancelled and the
former value is reinstated.

3.2.4 RETURNING TO OPERATOR-LEVEL
When all settings are configured correctly, the unit can be returned to OPERATE-level.
Please keep a record of all settings for later reference.
Use the control panel to return to OPERATE-level
PROG-key
In order to return to the operator level, press the PROG-key for three seconds.
When no keys are pressed for 2 minutes, SETUP-level will be left automatically.
3.3 CONFIGURATION SETTINGS
All settings of the F110-A can be set via the control panel.
The following paragraphs give a detailed description of each setting.

3.3.2 MENU 1 - TOTAL

This setting is used to select the engineering unit for the indication of the
total, the accumulated total and the pulse output.
When you change the engineering unit , you must recalculate and
reprogram the span for the (accumulated) total. When you recalculate and
reprogram the span, the history for (accumulated) total is not correct
anymore, because the (accumulated) total is not recalculated. For future
reference, best practice is to make a note of the accumulated total before
you program the recalculated span.
1.2
DECIMALS
This setting is used to set the amount of digits behind the decimal point for
the (accumulated) total indication.
1.3
SPAN
This setting is used to set the span for the total. With the span, the
flowmeter signal is converted to a quantity. The span for Total is based on
the engineering unit (SETUP 11) and the flow rate per second at 20mA (or
max signal). Enter the span with the decimals (decimals are not shown yet
and are set in SETUP 14). The more accurate the span, the more accurate
the functioning of the system will be.
Example 1: Calculating the Span.
Assume that the flowmeter generates 20mA at a rate of 652.31 USGAL per
hour, the selected unit is barrels. There are 42 gallons in one barrel; so the
rate is 652.31/42 is 15.53119 barrels/hour. This is 0.0043142
barrels/second, which is the span. Enter for the span: "004314" and for the
span decimals "6".
Example 2: Calculating the Span.
Assume that the flowmeter generates 20mA at a flow rate of 2,481.3
Liters/minute and the selected unit is "m3". The rate per second is
2,481.3/60 is 41.355 L/sec. This is 0.041355 m3/sec., which is the span.
Enter for the span: "041355" and for the span decimals "6".
When you recalculate and reprogram a new span, the history for
(accumulated) total is not correct anymore, because the (accumulated)
total is not recalculated. For future reference, best practice is to make a
note of the accumulated total before you program the recalculated span.

DECIMALS SPAN
This setting is used to set the number of digits behind the decimal point for
the span.
3.3.3 MENU 2 - FLOW RATE
The settings for total and flow rate are entirely separate. In this way, different engineering units can
be used for each e.g. cubic meters for total and liters for flow rate.

UNIT
This setting is used to select the engineering unit for the indication of the
flow rate.
Alteration of the engineering unit will have consequences for operator and
setup values, they will not be automatically recalculated to the value of the
new selected unit. The span has to be adapted as well; the calculation is
not done automatically.
2.2
TIME
This setting is used to set the time unit for the flow rate calculation. Note
that the flow rate is given in engineering unit/time unit, e.g. liters/minute
(l/min).
When you change this setting, also recalculate and change the settings for
the analog rate-min and analog rate-max.

SPAN
With the span, the flowmeter signal is converted to a quantity. The span for
flowrate is determined on the basis of the selected measurement unit and
time unit at 20mA (or maximum signal). Enter the span in whole numbers
(decimals are set with SETUP 2.5).
The more accurate the span, the more accurate the functioning of the
system will be.
Example 1: Calculating the Span
Assume that the flowmeter generates 20 mA at a flowrate of 2,481.3
Liters/minute, the selected unit is "Liters" and time unit "minute". The span
is 2481.3
Enter for SETUP 2.4: "248130" and for SETUP 2.5 - decimals span "2".
Example 2: Calculating the Span
Assume that the flowmeter generates 20 mA at a rate of 652.31 USGAL
per hour, the selected unit is USG and the time unit is minute. The span is
652.31/60 minutes is 10.87183 (GPM).
Enter for SETUP 2.4: "108718" and for SETUP 2.5 "4".

3.3.4 MENU 3 - DISPLAY

DISPLAY
3.1
FUNCTION
This setting can be set to display total or rate.
•When 'total' is selected, total is shown with the large digits together
with flow rate with the smaller digits. When SELECT is pressed, the
accumulated total is shown temporarily.
•When 'rate' is selected, only flow rate will be shown with the large
digits together with its measuring unit. When SELECT is pressed, the
total and the accumulated total are shown temporarily.
3.2
LIGHT
The backlight brightness can be adjusted from 0% (off) to 100% (full
brightness) in steps of 20%.
When the F110-A is only loop powered, the backlight is disabled. An
external power supply is required to supply the backlight.
3.3.5 MENU 4 - POWER MANAGEMENT
When used with the internal battery option (type PB/PC), the user can expect reliable measurement
over a long period of time. The F110-A has several smart power management functions to extend
the battery life time significantly. Two of these functions can be set.

POWER MANAGEMENT
4.1
LCD NEW
Sets the display refresh rate. Whenever a key is pressed, the display

set rate. When 'OFF' is selected, the display temporarily comes on after a
key press and it will go off after 30 seconds after the last key press.
The calculation of the display-information influences the power
consumption significantly. When the application does not require a fast
display refresh rate, it is strongly advised to select a slow rate.
Please note that no information will be lost at low refresh rates: all sensor
input will be processed in the background.
4.2
BATTERY MODE
The F110-A has two modes: operational or shelf.
After "shelf" has been selected, the F110-A can be stored for several
years; it will not process the sensor signal; the display is switched off but all
settings and totals are stored. In this mode, power consumption is
extremely low.
To wake up the F110-A again, press the SELECT/key two times.

FLOWMETER
5.1
FORMULA
The F110-A can process the (0)4-20mA signal in two ways,
Interpolation or Square root:
•Interpolation: the signal is processed linear: R = S x I
•Square root: for differential pressure: R = S I
where:
R= Rate: the calculated flow rate
S= Span: the maximum flow rate at 20mA. The span is programmed with
setup 2.4 for flow rate and with setup 1.3 for total.
I= Input: the scaled analog value; in these formulas value 0 (zero) for
(0)4mA and value 1 (one) for 20mA.
5.2
FILTER
The analog output signal of a sensor represents the actual flow. This signal
is measured several times a second. The value measured is a "snap-shot"
of the real flow as it will be fluctuating.
With the help of this digital filter a stable and accurate reading can be
obtained while the filter level can be set to a desired value.
The filter principle is based on three input values: the filter level (01-99),
the last measured analog value and the last average value. The higher the
filter level, the longer the response time on a value change will be.
5.3
CUT-OFF
To ignore e.g. leakage of the flow or vibration, a low-flow cut-off can be set
as percentage over the full range of 16mA (or 20mA). When the analog
value is less than the programmed percentage, with this setting, the flow
rate will be set to zero. The cut-off value can be programmed in the range
of 0.0 - 99.9%.

executed as this function has major influences on the accuracy of the
system!

enter, CAL SET will be shown as soon as the calibration is completed.

CALIB-HI
This setting is used to calibrate the input value for 20 mA as the signal from
the flowmeter might not be exact 20.0 mA at maximum flow rate. This
function will measure the real output value at maximum flow rate.
Be very sure that the offered signal is correct before the calibration is
executed as this function has major influences on the accuracy of the
system!

3.3.7 MENU 6 - ANALOG OUTPUT
A linear 4-20 mA signal (option AB: 0-20 mA or option AU: 0-10 V) output signal is generated that
represents the flow rate. The settings for the flow rate influence the analog output directly. The
relationship between the flow rate and the analog output is set with the following settings.

decimals shown depend upon setup 2.3. The engineering units/time (e.g.
L/min) are dependent upon setup 2.1 and 2.2.

Enter here the flow rate at which the output should generate the maximum
signal (20 mA or 10 V) - in most applications at maximum flow. The
number of decimals shown depend upon setup 2.3. The engineering

CUT-OFF
A low flow cut-off, e.g. to ignore leakage, can be set as a percentage of the
full range of 16 mA, 20 mA or 10 V.
When the flow is less than the required rate, the output will be the minimum

FILTER
This setting is used to stabilize the output signal. With the help of this
digital filter a more stable but less actual representation of the flow rate can
be obtained.
The filter principle is based on three input values: the filter level (01-99),
the last calculated flow rate and the last average value. The higher the filter

The pulse width determines the time that the output will be active; in other

A pulse will be generated every time a certain quantity is added to the total.
Enter this quantity here while taking the decimals for pulse into account.

The F110-A can optionally be equipped with a communication interface using the Modbus protocol
(Type CB/CH/CI/CT). Please consult Appendix C for a more detailed explanation of the protocol,

4 INSTALLATION
4.1 GENERAL DIRECTIONS
•Mounting, electrical installation, start-up and maintenance of this device may only be
carried out by trained persons authorized by the operator of the facility. Persons must
read and understand this manual before carrying out its instructions.
•The F110-A may only be operated by persons who are authorized and trained by the
operator of the facility. All instructions in this manual are to be observed.
•Ensure that the measuring system is correctly wired up according to the wiring diagrams.
Protection against accidental contact is no longer assured when the enclosure cover is
removed or the panel cabinet has been opened (danger from electrical shock). The
enclosure may only be opened by trained personnel.
•Take careful notice of the "Safety rules, instructions and precautionary measures" at the
front of this manual.
The F1-Series can be supplied as suitable for Safe Area or Hazardous Area. This is indicated in the
model code (shown on the product label) by the Type X* designator, with following options:
•Type XX: Suitable for safe area applications only (e.g. F110-A-XX)
Follow the mechanical and electrical installation instructions shown in chapter 4.
•Type XF: Suitable for explosion proof / flame proof applications (e.g. F110-A-XF)
Follow the electrical installation instructions as shown in chapter 4 and
the mechanical installation instructions of the enclosure that are supplied separately.
•Type XI: Suitable for intrinsically safe applications (e.g. F110-A-XI)
Follow the general mechanical and electrical installation instructions of chapter 4
and the specific installation instructions of chapter 5.

Take the relevant IP classification of the
enclosure into account (see identification plate).
Even an enclosure rated for IP67 / TYPE 4(X)

4.3 HANDLING THE F-SERIES ENCLOSURE
4.3.1 IDENTIFICATION
The F1-Series can be supplied as suitable for Safe Area or Hazardous Area.
Suitability for Intrinsic Safety is indicated in the model code by Type XI (e.g. F110-A-XI).
For Intrinsically Safe applications: Installation and identification labels are shown in chapter 5.
Identification label
To identify your F1-Series device, all field mount enclosures have a weatherproof identification label
placed on the outside of the unit.

Installation label
A second label is located on the inside and shows additional installation data. For panel mount
enclosures, the outside label is not available, so the inside label also serves as identification label.
