system, provided the product is used a per the manufacturer’s
recommendations and guidelines.
However, it is recommended that a client specific assessment is
completed by a trained and knowledgeable health care professional to
determine the method of transfer.

3. Intended use / Overview of the bed management system
The bed management system has been designed as an easy means to re-
position an individual who is restricted in their movements or does not
have the means to re-position themselves easily.
The system is also a tool to enable a carer to safely reposition a patient in
the safest manner with consideration for the carer without the need (in
most cases) and complication of designated mechanical devices to do so.
The system is a combination of two sheets designed to work with each
other providing a non-slip / slip surface. Used in conjunction with each
other, this creates an easy surface enabling the carer to safely re-position
a patient with no means to re-position themselves.
Used on their own or in conjunction with a suitable lifting device the
combination of use will enable a safe working environment for both
patient and carer.
4. Bed management system components
Please familiarise yourself with the components of the device by
referring to the diagram on the next page.
The Mattress cover
The mattress cover is a full length bed sheet made out of
slide sheet material however the middle section is PU
fabric with a ‘curtain’ of slide sheet material covering it,
this means that the system can be ‘locked’ or ‘unlocked’.
The long edges are covered with a strip of PU material (this
acts as a ‘break’ for the top slide sheet when sliding the
client over the beds surface. Manufactured from a nylon,
water resistant under sheet with wide non-slip sides
The top Slide sheet
Manufactured from a fully breathable, water resistant,
quilted polyester softshell top sheet.

5. Operating / Usage instruction
The mattress cover is placed over the mattress (with
the label at the headend of the bed) and the corner
elastic retaining straps hooked over each of the
mattress corners.
Ensure that the ‘curtain’ is down in the locked
position; this is when the black PU middle section of
the sheet is visible.
The quilted top sheet can then be placed on top of the
mattress cover. This sheet has adjustable straps on
each of the four corners (Bariatric Version has only 2
adjustable straps). These straps can be placed around
the corners of a mattress and adjusted to reduce upper
and lower body movement. This will provide extra
safety for people with certain conditions.
The quilted sheet can be used without a normal bed sheet; however, it is
advisable to place a normal cotton sheet over it. (It is advisable to use a flat
double size sheet on a single bed).
When the system is to be used
to move the person either up or
down the bed or from side to
side, take hold of the mattress
cover curtain handles and walk
up to the head of the bed, you
will feel resistance when the
curtain reaches the person’s
buttocks.
Now one carer takes hold of the loops on the under surface of the opposite
side of the top sheet, a gentle tilt of the client’s hips enables the other carer to
continue to pull the curtain up towards the head of the bed.
This is then repeated by the second carer. The system is now unlocked.

If there is only one carer
available, a mobile or
overhead hoist can be used to
facilitate this stage.
Please ensure the operator of
the hoist is trained to do so.
Using the loops on the under
surface of the quilted top
sheet as shown in the image
opposite, the client can be
moved up and down the bed
or to either side of the bed surface utilising the hoist method.
As shown below, the system can also be used for manually turning a person.

6. Hoist usage
If there is only one carer either a mobile or overhead hoist can be used to
assist in moving the person.
An accessory to the system is the body support wedge, this piece of equipment
enables to client to be supported without a carer having to adopt a static
posture for lengthy periods.
Once the person has been
repositioned the curtain must be
taken down to the foot end of the
bed, thus ensuring that the system is
now locked.
Please consult the user manual for the particular hoist being used and
ensure a competent user is present before and during its use

7. Cleaning
7.1 Laundering
General - Sensitive laundering of the system will extend the service life
of the product. Conversely, improper laundering will reduce the service
life and possibly affect its strength and integrity.
To be avoided:
The use of bleach at washing, particularly hypochlorite [may cause
structural damage]
Overheating the system during the cleaning cycle [temperatures in
excess of 100º may cause extreme shrinkage and structural damage]
The use of non-biological detergents is not recommended (especially
Fairy Non - Bio) as these types of detergent contain bleaching agents
that can degrade the strength of the fabrics.
The use of fabric conditioners is NOT recommended.
General soiling - the system should be laundered with soap or detergent
at 50°C on a standard domestic cycle.
Disinfection - the system should be laundered to ensure a ‘period at
temperature’ of:
10 minutes at 65ºC
3 minutes at 72ºC
Following NHS guidelines, extra time should be added to ensure thorough
mixing of hot water through the wash load.
It may be that available equipment does not allow the required level of
temperature control. The system may be washed on a 90ºC wash cycle,
though it is likely that some moderate shrinkage and/or colour bleed will
occur.
7.2 Drying
a. The system will air dry quite quickly in a warm room.
b. It should not be placed over radiators or convector heaters
c. The system may be CAREFULLY tumble dried on a cool [60ºC]
setting and short cycle.
If using the principles above, then the system should be checked at
intervals not exceeding 5 minutes.
Do not allow the system to overheat.
