Your AMILO Desktop
Overview
... is available in various expansion stages, which differ in their levels of hardware and software.
You can fit operator-controllable drives (such as a DVD drive) and other modules.
This manual shows you how to start up and operate your machine. The manual covers
all available expansion stages. Depending on the expansion stage selected, it may
happen that the hardware components shown are not fitted to your machine. Please
also note the instructions applicable to your operating system.
Depending on the selected configuration, the operating system is pre-installed
on your hard disk (e.g. Windows Vista).
So that no unauthorised person can access your data, your machine offers a range of security
measures. The security functions in the BIOS Setup allow you to protect your data against access by
assigning them passwords. In addition, systems with SmartCard readers offer further protection.

take note of when working with your device.

Pay attention to the information provided in the "Safety" manual
and in the following safety notes.
During installation and when operating the device, please observe the
instructions on environmental conditions in Chapter "Technical data" as well
as the instructions in Chapter "Getting started", Page 6.
You must only operate the device if the rated voltage used by the device is
set to the local mains voltage. Check the rated voltage set for this device
(see the "Getting started", Page 6 chapter).
Replace the lithium battery on the mainboard in accordance with the instructions
in the "Exchanging the lithium battery", Page 51 chapter.
Caution, components in the system can get very hot.
The ON/OFF switch does not fully disconnect the TV from the mains
voltage. To completely disconnect the mains voltage, remove the power
plug from the grounded mains outlet.
Transporting the device

Transport all parts separately in their original packaging or in a packaging which
protects them from knocks and jolts, to the new site.
Do not unpack them until all transportation manoeuvres are completed.
Cleaning the device

Turn off all power and equipment switches and remove the power
plug from the mains supply.
Do not clean any interior parts yourself, leave this job to a service technician.
Do not use any cleaning agents that contain abrasives or may corrode plastic.
Ensure that no liquid enters the system.

moistened in mild domestic detergent and then carefully wrung out.
Use disinfectant wipes to clean the keyboard and the mouse.

For our systems we generally grant warranty claims according to the German Civil Code as well as
additional warranty services by agreement (see the corresponding service documentation for details).
Our company has produced the system you have purchased in accordance with the DIN ISO
9001 and DIN EN ISO 144001 environmental and quality standards. We provide a statutory
guarantee on all of our products, or an extended warranty by arrangement.
Taking back end-of-life machines

The offer of taking back and recycling our systems is regulated and guaranteed by our
environmental management which has been certified according to DIN EN ISO 14001.
As far as possible, our machines are produced from materials which can be appropriately
recycled. After use, the machine is taken back for re-utilisation or recycling of the
materials, insofar as it is returned in a state corresponding to proper use. Non-recyclable
machine components are disposed of appropriately.
To return a machine, please use the recycling and disposal facilities available in your country.

Restoring installed software

If your operating system should at some point fail to start, or if faults should occur on your
hard drive, it may be necessary to reinstall the pre-installed software.

Unpacking and checking the delivery
It is recommended not to throw away the original packaging material! It may be
required for reshipment at some later date.

Only a few steps are necessary to put your new device into operation for the first time:
• Select a location for device and set up device
• Connecting external devices
• Check the voltage at the mains outlet and connect the device to an electrical outlet
• Switch the device on
You will learn more about the individual steps in the following sections.
External devices
If you have received other external devices in addition to your own device (e.g.
a printer), do not connect these until after the initial installation. The following
sections describe how to connect these external devices.
Drives and boards
If you have received drives or boards with your device, please do not install
them until after first-time setup. How to install drives and boards is described
in the "System expansions", Page 32 chapter.

When installing your device, please read the recommendations and
safety notes in the "Safety" manual.
Do not place the machine in any position other than the one intended (upright on its feet).
We recommend that you place your device on a surface with good anti-slip qualities.
In view of the multitude of different finishes and varnishes used on furniture, it is
possible that the rubber feet will mark the surface they stand on.
Do not stack several devices on top of each other.
Do not start the machine in any position other than upright on its feet.
Depending on the location of your machine, it may emit annoying vibration or noises.
To avoid this, allow a minimum clearance of 3 mm from other equipment or objects
at the sides of the casing where there are no ventilation grilles.
Make sure that the device is adequately ventilated. In order to avoid overheating,
do not cover the ventilation area of the monitor or the device.
Do not expose the device to extreme ambient conditions (see "Technical data", Page
52, "Ambient conditions"). Protect the device against dust, humidity and heat.

This chapter describes the individual hardware components of your machine. It gives
you an overview of the displays and connections of the machine . Familiarise yourself
with these elements before you start to use the machine.

Main switch Switch for switching on and off. The machine can no
longer be started from the network (Wake on LAN).
On/off switch Switch for booting up the system.
• On/off switch lights up white: The system is
switched on.

power-saving mode.

Connecting external devices
Read the documentation on the external device before connecting it.
With the exception of USB devices, always remove all power plugs
before connecting external devices!
Do not connect or disconnect cables during a thunderstorm.
Always take hold of the actual plug. Never unplug a cable by pulling the cable itself.
Connect and disconnect the cables in the order described below.
Connecting the cables
►Turn off all power and equipment switches.

►Connect all the cables to the device and the external devices. Please make sure that you
always observe the safety notes provided in "Important notes", Page 3.
►Plug all data communication cables into the appropriate sockets.
►Plug all power cables into the grounded mains outlets.
USB devices are hot-pluggable. This means you can connect and disconnect
USB cables while your device is switched on.
Additional information can be found in "Connecting external devices to the USB
ports", Page 11 and in the documentation for the USB devices.
Disconnecting the cables
►Switch off all affected devices.

►Unplug all data communication cables from the appropriate sockets.
►Disconnect all of the cables from the device and from the external devices.
Connecting the monitor
►Follow the instructions contained in the monitor manual to prepare the monitor
for operation (e.g. connecting cables).

►Plug the data cable into the monitor port of the device.
Depending on the expansion stage of your machine and your monitor, you can
also connect the data cable to the DVI or HDMI interface.
►Plug the monitor power cable into the grounded mains outlet.

Connecting the mouse and keyboard set
Depending on the model, the scope of supply of your machine includes a wireless mouse
and keyboard set or a mouse and keyboard set with cables.
Connecting the wireless mouse and keyboard set
►Connect the mouse and keyboard as described in Chapter "LX300
Wireless Keyboard Set", Page 20 .
The correct radio connection code is factory pre-set and the mouse and keyboard
set is immediately ready for operation. If nevertheless you encounter connection
problems, the instructions for establishing the connection can be found in Chapter
"Re-establishing the radio connection to the Keyboard Set if required", Page 23.
Connecting the mouse and keyboard set with cables
►Connect the mouse and keyboard each to a USB port on your machine.
The mouse and keyboard are immediately ready for operation.
Connecting external devices to the USB ports

You can connect a wide range of external devices to the USB ports (e.g.
printer, scanner, modem or keyboard).
USB devices are hot-pluggable. This means you can connect and disconnect
USB cables while your device is switched on.
Additional information can be found in the documentation for the USB devices.
►Connect the data cable to the external device.
►Connect the data cable to one of the USB ports on your device.
Device drivers
The external USB devices you connect to the USB ports usually require no
driver of their own, as the required software is already included in the operating
system. However, if the external USB device requires its own software, please
install it from the data carrier provided with the USB device.
To ensure USB 2.0, the length of the cable used between the front USB port of
your device and the external USB device must not exceed 3 m.

If the device is integrated into a network, the user and server details as well as the
network protocol are required during the software installation.
Contact your network administrator if you have any questions about these settings.
When you switch on the device for the first time, the supplied software is installed and configured.
Plan a reasonable amount of time for this, as this process must not be interrupted.
Once the installation has been started the device must not be switched
off, unless the installation has been completed.
During installation, the device may only be rebooted when you are requested to do so!
The installation will otherwise not be carried out correctly and the contents
of the hard disk must be completely restored.
You may need the licence number for Windows during the installation. The licence
number is located on a sticker on your device.
