Technological trend
The migration from high segment functions (Performance Multifunction) to Basic and Value segments is
continuing due to the technological and competitive dynamics of the market.
The Performance and Multifunction segments confirm:
Trend to integrate in functions such as logic control, data logging, graphic operator interface, and
complex math functions in the PID controller.
Products dedicated to specific applications called application controllers
(Example: combustion control, oven controller, packaging, etc.).
•Purchase criteria for P D temperature controllers
Price, brand, local technical assistance, and installed base are the main aspects influencing the decision to
purchase controllers, but this is also strongly affected by:
Level of complexity in configuring the controller
Level of difficulty in using the controller
Special attention was paid to satisfying and resolving these last two aspects in developing Gefran’s new
generation of controllers.

THE PRODUCT
Main technical characteristics
The model 650 1250 controllers are ideal for precise temperature controls, with automatic tuning
algorithms to control heating, cooling, and combinations of the two.
The LCD alphanumeric display allows generation of user configurable scrolling alphanumeric
messages for very simple operation and clarity of information for users.
The controllers develop functions such as timers, setpoint gradients, soft start, total and partial
load interrupt alarms, counters of KWh and number of operations of actuators, alarms and
diagnostics messages.
Serial communication is available in RS485, Modbus protocol.
Product configuration is extremely easy from the faceplate, from the GF_eXpress configurator, and
from an innovative portable configurator (Zapper).
The product is plug in for easy maintenance. The electronic part extracts from the faceplate.

TECHN CAL SUPPORT CHARACTER ST CS
1. Flex-view Display
The information on the display (colors, messages, alarms, help in line) can be customized, making the HMI
more efficient.
Choosing the color of the controller’s faceplate and the logo makes it easy to adapt to the styling of the
equipment on which it is installed.
•Operator messages are configurable
25 messages of 32 characters (Latin letters and numbers) configurable in three standard languages (other
languages on request).
They can be activated by numerous process events, such as: alarm limits attributed to the main variable, to
the setpoint, to the remote setpoint, to reading of load currents; from digital inputs, from Function Block
outputs.

8
•The color combination on the display can be customized
-Model 650: the standard colors of the PV SV displays are White Green. A different color combination
can be evaluated on request.
-Model 1250: the standard colors of the PV SV F displays are White Green Amber. A different color
combination can be evaluated on request.
Note
-The colors available for custom combinations of displays are white, green, and amber.
-Requests for customization of colors will be processed with the “special” products procedure.

• The variable displayed with the horizontal bargraph of the 1250 is configurable
-The bargraph facilitates interpretation of the state of a variable or of a process parameter.
-The following information can be configured:
• % power in output
• timer time
• current levels
• calculated valve position
• programmer time
• energy counter

The dimensions of the display (numbers – messages – bars) allow clear reading, even at a distance
- The luminosity of the display is adjustable with a parameter easily accessed from the device keypad,
allowing the operator’s needs to be balanced with the display’s life.
-The green LEDs for the 4 keys make using these devices more intuitive:
-they give visual feedback when the key is pressed
-they guide the user to the key to press (as for acknowledge of an alarm with latch) > indicate inactive
functions
-they signal if a key is not recogni ed (diagnostics)
•Help in Line messages (in English) for product configuration
-Over 100 scrolling messages to help with setup (help in line) that automatically provide the meaning of
the displayed parameter, making use of the programming manual no longer indispensable.
Example: tYPE > MA N NPUT TYPE OF PROBE
[Parameter] [Help in line message]
•Maximum clarity of system diagnostics messages (in English)
Example:
-Sensor broken
-Process value under Lo limit
-Process value over High Limit
-Input sensor Fail Connection
Examples:
-Alarm oven door open
-Low water level

•Logo on device faceplate can be customized
-This version is considered “special.”
•The colour of the device frame can be customized
-Frame colour: the standard colour is grey. Other colours in the RAL reference catalogue can be
evaluated on request.
This version is considered “special.”
•Benefits
-OEM customers: choosing the colour of the controller’s faceplate makes it easy to adapt to the styling of
the equipment on which it is installed.
-Brand labelling customers: the faceplate colour customizes

13
•Configuration with GF Express (from PC) even with the controller off
-Controller parameters can be configured with the GF_eXpress configurator.
-The configuration menu is guided.
-With GF Express you can save parameter recipes and then copy/paste them to the controller.
-For these operations, the controller can be on or off.

[2014/07/10]
14
•Configuration with portable configurator (Zapper)
-The Zapper copies parameters from the GF_eXpress configurator or from previously configured
controllers and pastes them to the controller in question.
-The operation is very simple: connect the Zapper via USB cable to the controller and press a button to
transfer the copied parameters.
•Benefits
-No risk of incorrect procedures.
-Can be done by non experts.
-Saves time in multiple setup of controllers with the same configuration.

3. Monitoring of energy consumption and preventive maintenance
•Energy Monitor
-The Energy Monitor function lets you display, totalize, and save energy consumption (for example,
KWh) of a single device or of a single heating zone.
-You can configure calculation and display of the cost (in currency) for totalized consumption.
Benefits
-Detection of abnormal consumption, possibly caused by breakdowns or malfunctions of the device.
-Availability of energy consumption data helps define strategies to reduce/optimize energy costs in the
production process.
Select output for energy calculation
•Maintenance Minder
-By measuring the number of switchings performed by the actuator (contactor, relay, other) or by
totalizing the number of working hours (of SWIR lamps), you can schedule preventive maintenance.
-When the set value is reached, a signal with Warning message is activated.
Benefits
Prevents system downtimes and production losses.
Number (x 1000) of output 1 relay switchings
Example : WARNING: REPLACE CONTACTOR NO. K2

4. Logic control block
•With 16 Function Blocks (AND – OR – NOT – TIMER), you can develop (program) applications and
assign external events (logic inputs) with events or internal states to the PID control function (alarms,
setpoint state, etc.).
Benefits
-Simplifies the control system by integrating multiple HW components in a single device.
- Maintains the advantages of single loop PID control.
