1 General remarks
1.1 Use instructions
The SmartFan X is an exhaust fan for installation in the wall or ceiling. For each fan, a hole has to
be drilled in the wall or ceiling, through which a connection to a ventilation duct leading outwards
can be established. The outside opening must be covered by an appropriate grille.
The SmartFan X can be linked up either to a remote control or to an internal control module of-
fering a wide range of control options: a timer, humidity sensor, motion sensor or a combination
thereof. The optional modules can be installed on initial SmartFan X installation or at a later date.
The SmartFan X has a casing classed as IP X4. It is assigned to IEC Protection Class II (double
insulated electrical appliance) and can be installed in Zone 3 (bathrooms, toilets, kitchens and
workplaces).
The fan must not be installed close to a source of heat, for instance near a radiant heater or in a
location where the temperature can exceed 40°C.

2.4 Positioning
The SmartFan X is designed for installation in a wall or ceiling. It is only to be used in Installation
Zone 3.
Make sure there is sufcient free space around the fan. Ensure that airow in the vicinity of the
SmartFan X is not blocked. Do not install the fan in a location where the temperature can exceed
40°C. The device must not be operated in the vicinity of combustible materials, uids or gases.
Ceiling installation
To prevent condensation water entering the SmartFan X when instal-
led in a ceiling, a condensate trap* (size DN 110) must be installed in
the fan‘s vertical vent pipe.
Please make sure that the fan wheel can turn without hindrance and
that, when exible hoses are used, the outlet nozzle is not too tight.

4 Installation
4.1 Making the hole in the wall
When installing the SmartFan X in a wall, a hole has to be core-drilled for the mounting tube with
an outward gradient of 1-3%, allowing any condensate to drain off.
4.2 Inserting the mounting tube
Measure the thickness of the wall. Should any plastering still need to be done, allow for plaster
thickness when shortening the mounting tube. Shorten the mounting tube using a sabre saw in
such a way that the mounting tube ends are ush with both inside and outside walls.
Apply a suitable mounting adhesive/sealant (1) to the outside of the mounting tube and insert
it into the core-drilled hole (2). Pay attention to the drying time of the adhesive/sealant used.

5 Operating the system
When the SmartFan X is switched on, it takes about 45 seconds before the iris diaphragm opens.
When it is switched off, the motor stops and, about 25 seconds later, the iris diaphragm shuts.
The reaction speed of the iris diaphragm is due to technical reasons and completely normal.
5.1 Use of control modules
When connected to a control module, the SmartFan X switches on when:
• the motion sensor registers that a person is in the room;
• the humidity sensor registers that the set humidity level for the room is exceeded;
• 230 volts reach the „T“ trigger (see Cabling and wiring [A]).
When connected to a control module, the SmartFan X switches off when:
• the motion sensor registers that nobody is in the room;
• the humidity sensor registers that the humidity level is lower than the set level;
• the set time has passed;
• 230 volts are no longer reaching the „T“ trigger (see Cabling and wiring [A]).

17 EN
6 Troubleshooting
Should the SmartFan X not work properly after taking the following measures, please contact the installer.
Fault What is to be done
The device is not functioning
at all.
Check that the device has been properly wired. Also
check the fuse. Check that the module is functioning.
The fan motor does not start.
Check that the fan wheel can move freely. In most
cases, all you have to do is to clean the wheel and the
surrounding area.
The fan does not switch off.
Check that the module's "T" connection no longer has
power. Wait for the switch-off delay period to end.
Check that none of the sensors are reacting.
The fan motor is running at
half-speed.
Check that the fan wheel can move freely. In most
cases, all you have to do is to clean the wheel and the
surrounding area. Check that the module is functioning.
The fan is making loud noises or
vibrating.
Avoid installing the fan in drylined walls, as these act
like a membrane, intensifying the smallest vibration.
Check the fan wheel for damage or imbalance. In
certain cases, all you have to do is to press your thumb
gently against the wheel to correct any imbalance.
The fan diaphragm does not
open/shut immediately.
The SmartFan X diaphragm takes about 45 secs. to
open and about 25 secs. to shut.
The fan diaphragm does not
open.
Check that the iris diaphragm has been properly as-
sembled. Make sure that the blades have been properly
inserted. Where necessary, replace the clip (part of
the accessories package). Check whether anything is
blocking the mechanism.
The fan diaphragm does not
shut.
Check whether anything is blocking the mechanism.
Make sure that the spring is properly mounted. The
movable parts of the iris diaphragm must be clean.

EN 18
7 Maintenance
To ensure the device‘s long-term functioning and to maintain the warranty, we recommend
cleaning the fan once a year. Accumulations of dirt on the fan wheel and the inside of the fan will
cause the motor to overheat.
The iris diaphragm may be cleaned with a damp cloth. Never use abrasive cleaners. The inner
components, e.g. the fan wheel, should be cleaned with a soft brush.
Never try and clean the fan itself through immersing it in water or putting it in the dishwasher. The
only things you can put in the dishwasher are the blades of the iris diaphragm.
