Verifying Cable Pairs
To verify that the correct wire pair has been
traced, use either of these methods:
Method 1:
1. Separate the two wires into a “V” shape.
2. Place the probe tip near the center of the “V.”
• If the 45082 does not detect a signal at the
center of the “V,” but does detect a signal
as the probe is moved closer to each wire,
the two wires are correctly paired.
• If the 45082 detects a signal at the center of
the “V,” the wires are either incorrectly
paired or one of the wires is faulty. Move the
45082 closer to one wire and then the other.
The wire that has a signal is one of the wire
pair. The wire without a signal is either not a
part of the pair or has a fault, such as high
resistance, an open or a short to ground.
Method 2:
1. Connect the wires together to create a short
circuit.
2. Place the probe tip near the wires. The 45082
will not detect the signal if the wires are
correctly paired and short circuited. If the
45082 does detect the signal, this indicates a
fault such as high resistance or an open
circuit.
Description
The 45082 Pair Tracing Probe is intended to trace
wire pairs. It can detect signals between 500 Hz
and 1.2 kHz. For best results, use the 45082 Pair
Tracing Probe with the 45081 Tone Generator.
Specifications
Battery Quantity and Type..................... one 9-volt
Frequency Range ...................... 500 Hz to 1.2 kHz
Operating Range ............ approx. 6 miles (10 km)
Operation
1. See the tone generator manufacturer’s
instructions. Connect the tone generator to
the cable pair and turn it on.
2. Hold the 45082 Pair Tracing Probe near the
tone generator. Press the ON switch to check
for the presence of the tone generator’s tone.
3. Set the Gain Adjustment to “Far”. Trace the
cable.
Note: Rotate the Gain Adjustment Knob
toward “Near” to reduce the gain as
necessary. The correct wire is the one
with the strongest signal.
