1. General information
Read this document before you install the
product. Installation and operation must
comply with local regulations and accepted
codes of good practice.
1.1 Hazard statements
The symbols and hazard statements below may
appear in Grundfos installation and operating
instructions, safety instructions and service
instructions.
DANGER
Indicates a hazardous situation which, if
not avoided, will result in death or serious
personal injury.

Indicates a hazardous situation which, if

CAUTION
Indicates a hazardous situation which, if
not avoided, could result in minor or
moderate personal injury.
The hazard statements are structured in the following

1.2 Notes
The symbols and notes below may appear in
Grundfos installation and operating instructions,
safety instructions and service instructions.
Observe these instructions for explosion-
proof products.
A blue or grey circle with a white graphical
symbol indicates that an action must be
taken.
A red or grey circle with a diagonal bar,
possibly with a black graphical symbol,
indicates that an action must not be taken
or must be stopped.
If these instructions are not observed, it
may result in malfunction or damage to the
equipment.
Tips and advice that make the work easier.

2. Product introduction
The CIM module communicates via cellular network
to the related cloud, for example, Grundfos iSolutions
Cloud (requires a Grundfos contract).
The module is supplied separately and must be fitted
in the product to be communicated with or in a CIU
unit (CIU = Communication Interface Unit).
For the connection of Grundfos products like RSI,
which support Modbus RTU protocol only, CIM 280
has an additional RS-485 port. Products that use
GENIbus for connection are still supported by CIM
280.
In the following, "Grundfos product" means one or
more Grundfos products, depending on the actual
application.
2.1 Intended use
The cellular module is intended to support data
transmission between a cellular network and a
Grundfos product.
2.2 Applications
CIM (Communication Interface Module) 280 4G
cellular-based products are available in two regional
variants (EU and US) due to local frequency
bands. Make sure that the frequency band fits the
band provided by the local telecom company. CIM
280 requires a separate 4G antenna as well as a SIM
card subscription that supports 4G data and
international PDU SMS.
Information about how to mount a CIM interface into a
Grundfos product is described in the I&O manual of
the product itself.
The CIM 280 cellular module makes it possible to
control and monitor a Grundfos product in the
following way:
• From Grundfos iSolutions Cloud or the related
cloud where control takes place via a central
server. This is not described in this document and
depends on the contract and the cloud
application.
Retrofitting of CIM 280 is described in the installation
and operating instructions of the Grundfos product.
If you want CIM 280 to connect to another
cloud than Grundfos iSolutions Cloud, it
can take 3-4 minutes until the interface
reconnects at the first communication
process.
2.3 Supported product range
CIM 280 can be mounted into the following products:
• Grundfos CIU 90x units
• Grundfos E-pumps with MGE motors
• Grundfos MAGNA3 pumps
• Grundfos CU 3x2 controllers
• Grundfos LC 2x1, 2x2 level controllers.
For information on which products are supported,
contact Grundfos.
2.4 RS-485 communication interface
A Modbus RTU slave device can be connected to the
connector of the RS-485 interface. The Modbus RTU
communication settings (baud rate, start/stop bits or
parity bits) have to be set on the cloud site.

3. Installation requirements
3.1 Security
The CIM module provides a secure way of cellular
data transmission to the cloud and uses certificates
for access authorisation.
3.2 RF safety
Installers and end users must be provided
with these installation and operating
instructions and operating conditions for
satisfying RF exposure compliance.

accordance with the instructions, may cause harmful
interference to radio communications. However, there
is no guarantee that interference will not occur in a
particular installation. If this equipment does cause
harmful interference to radio or television reception,
which can be determined by turning the equipment off

• Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna.

4.2 Fitting a cellular antenna
The antenna for CIM 280 must be connected to the
module to establish a connection to the cellular
network.
The antenna must be installed outside the
control cabinet in a position with good
reception conditions. If required by the
telecom company, connect an additional
antenna.

connection (pos. 1) of CIM 280.

4.3 Inserting the SIM card
You must have a SIM card subscription
with international PDU SMS roaming
activated.
For Grundfos/Telenor SIM cards delivered
with the product, go to step 3 as these
come preconfigured for use with the
cellular module.
1. Make sure that the SIM card is activated with local
data usage and international PDU SMS as part of
the subscription.
2. Make sure that the PIN code for the SIM card is
set correctly before inserting the SIM card:
a. If the SIM card is delivered with the PIN code
activated, it must be deactivated by inserting
the SIM card into a mobile phone. See the
manual for the mobile phone.
b. If a PIN code is required, it must be set to meet
the demands of the related cloud
application, for example, to "4321". This can
be done by inserting the SIM card into a
mobile phone. See the manual for the mobile
phone.
3. Insert the SIM card into the SIM card slot.
The slanted edge of the SIM card must
point upwards. See the photo below.

4.4 Connecting the RS-485 communication
interface
Connect the wires according to the below table.
SW2 line termination needs to be switched
on if the unit is the last device on a subnet.
LED3 shows the status of the RS-485
communication.

‐Do not use the battery in temperatures
above 45 °C.
The CIM 280 cellular module can be fitted with a
lithium-ion battery (part number 99465650). It is
secured by a Velcro strap, which absorbs vibrations
and makes it easier to replace the battery. Connect
the battery to CIM 280 as shown below. See the CIU
quick guide for placement of the battery on the CIU
cover.
If the battery is not connected, the user will
not receive any information in case of a
power cut.

5. Electrical connection
WARNING

‐Switch off the power supply before
making any electrical connections.
Make sure that the power supply
cannot be switched on accidentally.
‐The CIM module must only be
connected to SELV circuits. SELV
wires must not come into contact with
other wires with higher voltages.
‐Connect CIM only to a Grundfos host
product with a dedicated CIM interface.

must be observed carefully as
improper handling of the lithium-ion
battery may result in injury or damage
from electrolyte leakage, heating
ignition or explosion.
The following safety precautions must be observed:
• Only insert the approved Grundfos battery pack
(part number 99465650).
• Never use this battery pack in other battery
chargers.
• Do not dismantle or modify the battery.
• Do not heat or incinerate the battery.
• Do not pierce, crush or cause mechanical damage
to the battery.
• Do not short circuit the battery.
• Do not allow the battery to get wet or be
immersed in water.
• Do not strike or throw the battery.
• For long periods of storage, the storage
temperature should be below 35 °C.

5.1 Connecting the power supply
When installed from factory, LED2 on the
CIM module is permanently red until the
product driver is downloaded from the
cloud.
1. Switch on the power supply. The CIM module is
powered either by the Grundfos product in which it
is fitted or by the battery in case of a power cut.
a. LED1 is flashing yellow (searching for cellular
network). When the connection to the cellular
network is established, LED1 pulsates yellow
(cellular network active).
b. LED2 is permanently green (internal
communication between the CIM module and
the Grundfos product is OK).

6. Fault finding
DANGER
Electric shock
Death or serious personal injury
‐Switch off the power supply before you start any work on the product.Make sure that the power
supply cannot be switched on accidentally.
Various faults of the CIM module can be detected by observing the status of the three communication LEDs.
6.1 Both LEDs remain off when the power supply is connected
Cause Remedy
The CIM module is fitted incorrectly in the Grundfos
product.
• Make sure that the CIM module is fitted correctly in
the Grundfos product.
The CIM module is defective. • Replace the CIM module. Contact Grundfos.
If the CIM module is fitted in a CIU 90xbox: • Check the power supply for the CIU 90x box.

6.2 The LED for internal communication is flashing red
Cause Remedy
There is no internal communication between the CIM
module and the Grundfos product.
• Make sure that the CIM module is fitted correctly in
the Grundfos product.
If the CIM module is fitted into a CIU 90x box: • Make sure that the GENIbus cable to the product
and possible wires are connected properly on
clamps A-Y-B (and are not mixed).

6.3 The LED for internal communication is permanently red
Cause Remedy
The CIM module does not support the Grundfos
product.
• Contact Grundfos.
The CIM module is not configured. The product driver
is not downloaded from the cloud yet. When the CIM
module is switched on, LED2 may turn green for 1
minute before it turns permanently red.
• Run the setup process in the cloud. Contact
Grundfos.

6.4 LED1 is flashing yellow
LED1 is flashing with a one-second interval.
Cause Remedy
The SIM card is not inserted. • Insert the SIM card.
The SIM card is not inserted correctly. • Insert the SIM card correctly.
The PIN code of the SIM card is not removed or set
to 4321.
• Remove the PIN code or set it to 4321 with a mobile
phone.
No connection to the cellular network. • Check the connection to the antenna.
• Check the cellular coverage of the area with, for
instance, a mobile phone.
• Experiment with the position of the external antenna.
• In some cases, adding an additional antenna to the
second SMA connector may improve the signal.

Cause Remedy
Communication to Modbus RTU slaves is not
working.
• Make sure that the slaves have unique Modbus RTU
addresses.
• Check the Modbus RTU parameter settings such
as baud rate, parity bits, start/stop bits.
• There is no cloud driver for the Modbus RTU slave
device loaded to the CIM module.

8. Disposing of the product
This product or parts of it must be disposed of in an
environmentally sound way.
1. Use the public or private waste collection service.
2. If this is not possible, contact the nearest
Grundfos company or service workshop.
