1.2 Hazard statements
The symbols and hazard statements below may
appear in Grundfos installation and operating
instructions, safety instructions and service
instructions.
DANGER
Indicates a hazardous situation which, if
not avoided, will result in death or serious
personal injury.
WARNING
Indicates a hazardous situation which, if
not avoided, could result in death or
serious personal injury.
CAUTION
Indicates a hazardous situation which, if
not avoided, could result in minor or
moderate personal injury.
The hazard statements are structured in the following
way:

1.3 Notes
The symbols and notes below may appear in
Grundfos installation and operating instructions,
safety instructions and service instructions.
Observe these instructions for explosion-
proof products.
A blue or grey circle with a white graphical
symbol indicates that an action must be
taken.
A red or grey circle with a diagonal bar,
possibly with a black graphical symbol,
indicates that an action must not be taken
or must be stopped.
If these instructions are not observed, it
may result in malfunction or damage to the
equipment.
Tips and advice that make the work easier.
1.4 Permanent magnets
WARNING
Magnetic field
Death or serious personal injury
‐Persons with pacemaker or other
magnet-sensitive medical devices must
not handle this pump. They must keep
a distance of at least 1 metre from the
product, as there is a risk of influence
from the magnetic fields of the pump.
‐Credit cards, computers, watches and
other magnet-sensitive objects should
not be kept close to the pump.
‐The pump contains powerful magnets
that may pose a risk of personal injury
when servicing the pump. The pump
must therefore only be dismantled and
assembled by authorised persons.
2. Product introduction
2.1 Product description
Incorrect operation of the pump can result
in malfunction or damage to the pump and
damage to the surrounding property.
Grundfos CRN MAGdrive pumps are semi-hermetic
and essentially leakage-free. The motor torque is
transmitted to the pump shaft by means of magnetic
force.

3. Mechanical installation
Installation and operation must comply
with local regulations and accepted codes
of good practice.
Before installation, check that the pump and its
components are as ordered and that no visible parts
have been damaged.
3.1 Installing the product
WARNING

not handle this pump. They must keep
a distance of at least 1 metre from the
product, as there is a risk of influence
from the magnetic fields of the pump.

‐Fasten the pump securely to a solid
and even foundation according to the
specifications stated in the installation
and operating instructions.
The pump must not be installed in ATEX
zones 2D, 3D and M2 (dust and mining
zones).
If the pump is installed in ATEX zones 2G
or 3G, a LiqTec sensor must be installed to
protect the pump.
The pump must be installed and put into operation as
described in the installation and operating instructions
for CR, CRI, CRN.
We recommend to protect CRN MAGdrive pumps
against dry running by installing a flow switch,
pressure switch or a LiqTec sensor close to the pump.
The delay of the dry-running protection must be
maximum 15 seconds.

3.2 Connection of a sensor
A pressure sensor or a Grundfos LiqTec dry-running
protection unit can be fitted in the threaded hole in the
pump head.

4. Electrical connection
WARNING

‐Switch off the power supply before you
start any work on the product.
‐Make sure that the power supply
cannot be switched on accidentally.
‐Connect the pump to an external main
switch close to the pump and to a
motor-protective circuit breaker or a
CUE frequency converter. Make sure
you can lock the main switch in OFF
position (isolated). Type and
requirements as specified in EN
60204-1, 5.3.2.
The pump must be installed as described in the
installation and operating instructions for CR, CRI,
CRN.
Pumps with 2-pole motors of 18.5 and 22 kW and 4-
pole motors as from 1.1 kW must be started via a soft
starter.
4.1 Motor protection
As a minimum, the motor must be connected to an
effective electronic motor protection with
instantaneous release when the maximum current
setting is reached. If a soft starter or a frequency
converter is used, it must also be with instantaneous
release.
To ensure the optimum protection of the MAGdrive
motor, the motor protection must be set in
accordance with the following guidelines:
1. Set the overload protection to the rated full-load
current (I1/1) of the motor.
2. Start the pump, and let it run for half an hour at
the required duty point.
3. Measure the motor current. If not possible, slowly
grade down the scale indicator until the motor trip
point is reached.
4. The setting of the motor protection must be 5 %
higher than this value. The highest permissible
setting of the motor protection is the rated full-load
current (I1/1) of the motor.
4.2 Self-regulating heat-tracing cable
If the pump is supplied with a self-regulating heat-
tracing cable, make sure that the cable is connected
to a 1 x 220-240 V, 50 Hz power supply.
If the pump operates with liquids below 0 °C, ensure
that the power supply is switched on, even if the
pump is stopped. The power supply must not have a
fuse size larger than 13 A.

5. Starting up the product

rate is obtained.

Do not start the pump until it has been
filled with liquid and vented.
1. Open the isolating valve on the inlet side of the
pump.
2. Close the isolating valve on the outlet side of the
pump.
3. Loosen the vent screw in the pump head.
4. Slowly fill the pump with liquid.
5. Tighten the vent screw when the pump has been
completely filled with liquid.
6. Slowly open the isolating valve on the outlet side
of the pump.
7. Start the pump.
8. Check the direction of rotation by means of the
motor fan and the label on top of the fan cover.
9. After startup, the pump must be vented again.
Slowly loosen the vent screw in the pump head.
Pay attention to the direction of the
vent hole during liquid filling and
venting. Make sure that the escaping
liquid does not cause damage to the
motor or other components.
10. When liquid runs out, tighten the vent screw
securely.
