■Original safety instructions
These safety instructions give a quick overview of the
safety precautions to be taken in connection with any
work on this product.
Observe these safety instructions during handling,
installation, operation, maintenance, service and
repair of this product.
These safety instructions are a supplementary
document, and all safety instructions will appear
again in the relevant sections of the installation and
operating instructions.
Keep these safety instructions at the installation site
for future reference.
Read this document before you install the
product. Installation and operation must
comply with local regulations and accepted
codes of good practice.
Unpacking
Be careful not to damage the motor cable
with sharp tools when unpacking the mo-
tor.
The separate nameplate supplied with the
motor is intended for being visible in elec-
tric panel during installation of the pump
set.
Storage and handling
If an MMS motor is stored, the shaft must
be turned at least once a month. If a motor
is stored for more than one year before in-
stallation, the rotating parts of the motor
must be dismantled and checked before
use.

Frost protection
Special motors factory-filled with deminer-
alised water must be stored at a tempera-
ture above the freezing point or emptied
before storage.

Checking the motor liquid
Check the level of motor liquid and refill if
required. Use tap water
If frost protection is required, a special
Grundfos liquid must be used to refill the
motor.

Grundfos MMS6, MMS8000, MMS10000 and
MMS12000 submersible motors
Before fitting the motor to a pump after a
long period of storage, lubricate the shaft
seal by adding a few drops of water and
turning the shaft.
Motors suitable for horizontal installation
CAUTION
Hot surface
Minor or moderate personal injury
‐If the pump is used for pumping hot liq-
uids (40 to 60 °C), make sure that peo-
ple cannot come into contact with the
pump and the installation, e.g. by in-
stalling a guard.
During operation, the motor must always
be completely submerged in the liquid.
Make sure that the NPSH values of the
mounted pump are fulfilled.
Liquid temperatures/cooling
In case the stated flow velocity cannot be achieved, a flow sleeve must be installed
For 37 kW MMS6 (only PVC windings), 110 kW MMS8000 and 170 kW MMS10000, the maximum
liquid temperature is 5 °C lower than stated in the table above. For 190 kW MMS10000, 220-250 kW
MMS12000/50 Hz and MMS12000/60 Hz, the temperature is 10 °C lower than stated.

‐The pump must be earthed.
‐The pump must be connected to an ex-
ternal main switch and must be provi-
ded with means to locking it in the OFF
(isolated) position. Type and require-
ments are specified in EN 60204-1,
5.3.2
The electrical connection must be carried
out by an authorised person in accordance
with local regulations.
General
If an MS motor with temperature transmit-
ter is connected to a frequency converter,
he fuse melts and the transmitter becomes
inactive. The transmitter can no longer be
reactivated, consequently, the motor there-
after operates like one without a tempera-
ture transmitter.
To enable monitoring of the motor temper-
ature when running at frequency converter
operation, Grundfos recommends that a
Pt100 or a Pt1000 sensor be installed.
During frequency converter operation, it is
not advisable to run the motor at a fre-
quency higher than the rated frequency
(50 or 60 Hz). In connection with pump op-
eration, it is important never to reduce the
frequency (and consequently the speed) to
such a level that the necessary flow of
cooling liquid past the motor is no longer
ensured.

‐When the motor has been thermally
switched off, the motor terminals are
still live. When the motor has cooled
sufficiently, it will restart automatically.
Required settings of the motor-protective circuit
breaker
If this requirement is not met, the motor
warranty will be invalidated.
Cable sizing
Submersible motor cables are dimen-
sioned for submersion in the liquid, and
will not necessarily have sufficient cross-
section to be in the air.
Control of single-phase MS402
Single-phase MS402 submersible motors
below 1.1 kW incorporate motor protection
that cuts out the motor in case of exces-
sive winding temperatures while the motor
is still supplied with voltage. Allow for this
when the motor forms part of a control sys-
tem.
Checking the direction of rotation of the pump set
The pump must not be started until the
suction interconnector has been complete-
ly submerged in the liquid.
Frequency converter
During frequency converter operation, it is
not advisable to run the motor at a fre-
quency higher than the rated frequency
(50 or 60 Hz). In connection with pump op-
eration, it is important never to reduce the
frequency (and consequently the speed) to
such a level that the necessary flow of
cooling liquid past the motor is no longer
ensured.

In case of unintended flow of water through a non-
energized pump, there is a risk that the moving parts
of the pump and the motor will start rotating, thereby
generating voltage over the terminals. The size of the
voltage depends on the speed of rotation.
Consequently, the motor terminals must be
considered as live until proven otherwise.
Removing and fitting the cable guard
Once the cable guard is fitted, make sure
that the pump chambers are aligned.

Be careful not to bend or damage long
pump sets when moving them from hori-
zontal to vertical positions.
Grundfos recommends that a maximum 30
cm long facilitating pipe be fitted to the
pump to facilitate handling of the pump
during installation.

pump and the motor engages properly.

Disposing of the product
The crossed-out wheelie bin symbol
on a product means that it must be
disposed of separately from household
waste. When a product marked with
this symbol reaches its end of life, take
it to a collection point designated by
the local waste disposal authorities.
The separate collection and recycling
of such products will help protect the
environment and human health.
