Safety
Safety information
To avoid personal injury or damage to the device, read the following information carefully before you
operate the device. Safety precautions in actual operation include but are not limited to safety
information mentioned in this document.
General operating safety
•
Only H3C authorized or professional engineers are allowed to operate the device.
•
Keep the device clean and dust-free. Do not place it in a humid place or allow liquids to enter it.
•
Before powering on the device, ensure that the blade enclosure is securely grounded.
•
To maintain sufficient heat dissipation, use filler panels on idle slots.
Electrical safety
•
Carefully check any potential hazards in the work area, for example, whether the ground is wet
and whether the blade enclosure is grounded or reliably grounded.
•
Do not work alone when performing live-line maintenance.
•
Do not touch the power supply directly or indirectly through conductive objects to prevent
electric shock.
Safety precautions
•
When maintaining the device, place the device on a clean, stable table or floor.
•
To avoid personal injury from hot surfaces or internal components, allow the device and its
internal components to cool before touching them.
•
When using tools to maintain the device, follow the correct operation methods to avoid damage
to the personnel or device.
•
When connecting, testing or replacing optical fibers, do not look directly into the optical fiber
outlet to prevent the laser beam from hurting your eyes.
•
Gently and slowly transport or place the device with force evenly distributed.
ESD prevention
Preventing electrostatic discharge
Electrostatic charges that build up on people and conductors damage or shorten the lifespan of the
main board and electrostatic-sensitive components.
To prevent electrostatic damage, follow these guidelines:
•
Transport or store the device in an ESD bag.
•
Place the device on a grounded table before taking it out of the ESD bag.
•
Avoid touching pins or circuitry of the device without taking any ESD prevention measures.

Grounding methods to prevent electrostatic discharge
When removing or installing the device, you can use one or multiple of the following grounding
methods to prevent electrostatic discharge:
•
Wear an ESD wrist strap and ensure that it is reliably grounded. Ensure that the ESD wrist strap
makes good skin contact and can be flexibly stretched out and draw back.
•
In the work areas, wear the ESD clothing and shoes.
•
Use conductive field service tools.
•
Use a portable field service kit with a folding ESD tool mat.

ICM modules supported by the blade enclosure include switch modules and straight-through
modules (also known as cascading modules in some manuals). The BX1020B IB is a type of
switch module. Both ICM and switch modules in this document refer to the BX1020B IB.
Module view
H3C UniServer BX1020B IB switch module (BX1020B IB) is installed on the H3C UniServer B16000
enclosure to provide Infiniband ports for servers installed at the front of the enclosure. It provides 16
internal IB ports to connect to the IB mezzanine network adapters on the servers and provides 20
ports to connect to external devices.

module.

Logical structure
As shown in Figure 4, the switch module contains the following units:
•
AMC unit—As the management unit of the switch module, the AMC unit is responsible for
module data collection and reporting, module power-on/off control, and system monitoring.
•
Quantum switch unit—As the data processing core of the switch module, the switch unit is
responsible for internal and external data forwarding and unrecognizable packet reporting.

The Quantum switch unit provides 16 internal ports and 20 external ports, which are numbered 1
through 40, where 11, 12, 17, and 18 are reserved, as shown in Figure 5.

Installation guidelines
•
As shown in Figure 6, up to six switch modules can be installed in slots ICM1 through ICM6 at
the rear of the blade enclosure.

The IB switch module is hot swappable.

Figure 1 shows the connections between switch modules and half-wide Mezzanine network
adapters.

Mezzanine network adapter 1 is connected to switch modules in slot 1 and slot 4.
•
Mezzanine network adapter 2 is connected to switch modules in slot 2 and slot 5.
•
Mezzanine network adapter 3 is connected to switch modules in slot 3 and slot 6.

Compatibility between the switch module and
transceiver modules/cables
The following are the transceiver modules/cables compatible with the BX1020B IB switch module:
•
MCP1600-E003E26—IB EDR DAC passive cable (100G)
•
MFA1A00-E005—IB EDR AOC active cable (100G)

Replacing the switch module
You can replace the switch module when it is faulty or when you want to use a switch module of
another model.
Installation tools
The following tools or equipment might be required when you install, use, or maintain the device.

Preparing for the replacement

Take ESD preventive measures: Wear the ESD clothing. Properly wear and ground the ESD
wrist strap. Remove conductive objects (such as jewelry or watch).
•
Before replacing a component, check the slots and connectors, and ensure that the pins are not
damaged (for example, check whether pins are deformed or whether foreign objects are on the
connectors).
•
Read the guidelines for installing the switch module, as described in "Installation guidelines."
Replacing the switch module
1. Remove the switch module. Press the unlock button on the switch module to fully open the
ejector, and slowly pull the switch module out of the chassis horizontally.
2. Put the switch module into the ESD bag.
3. Install the switch module. Take out the switch module to be installed from the ESD bag.
4. Press the unlock button to automatically open the ejector.
5. Slowly insert the switch module into the blade enclosure horizontally with UP facing upwards,
and then lock the ejector.

Powering on and powering off the switch

This section describes how to power on and power off the switch module.

Procedure
After the switch module is successfully powered on, the Health LED is steady green. For more
information about the LEDs, see Table 4.
Powering on the switch module as the blade enclosure is powered on
The switch module is powered on automatically when the blade enclosure is powered on, no matter
whether it is installed before or after the enclosure is powered on.
Powering on the switch module from the OM Web interface
1. Log in to the OM Web interface. For more information, see "Logging in to the OM from the Web
interface."
2. Click Switch module.
3. Select a target switch module.
4. Click Power State, and click Power On.
5. Click OK. As shown in Figure 4, the switch module has been powered on.

Configuring the switch module
To configure the BX1020B switch module, you must access the operating system of the blade
enclosure where the IB mezzanine network adapter resides. Before configuring the switch module,
verify the following information:
•
The IB mezzanine network adapter is in position and has been installed with the most recent
driver.
•
The IP address of the IB mezzanine network adapter has been configured, and enable the
subnet manager.
•
The MFT tool has been installed on the blade enclosure where the IB mezzanine network
adapter resides.
