DEFEAT DR. EGGMAN!
HOW TO PLAY
THE FIRST TIME YOU PLAY
Dr. Eggman has crash-landed on a mysterious island that floats in
the sky by harnessing the power of Chaos Emeralds. The Doc wants
to steal those emeralds and use them to repair his Death Egg.
To obtain them, he tricks Knuckles into thinking that Sonic and Tails
are the ones trying to steal them. Now Sonic and Tails must outsmart
Knuckles and battle Badniks as they go in search of gold Rings,
emeralds, and Dr. Eggman!
There are six stages of play. Each stage is full of challenges and
obstacles. When obstacles get too dicult, call on Tails for help!
He will airli Sonic to safety! You begin each stage with four lives,
but you can gain additional lives in each stage by picking up
“1-UP” icons. Score as many points as you can, and if you defeat
Dr. Eggman in all six stages, you win the game!
Press the ON/START button. You’ll hear a beep and the top score
will be displayed. Press ON/START again to begin the game from
stage 1. You’ll start with a score of zero.

other side of page.

STAGES
Try to locate Chaos Emeralds
and defeat Dr. Eggman. Use your
“SPIN DASH” ATTACK to destroy
obstacles in your way and to
score points.
Picking up a power-up icon gives
you special power! There are four
kinds of power: INVINCIBILITY (no
Badnik can harm you); FLAME
SHIELD (protects you from attack
by fire); SUPER RING (worth four
gold rings); and LIGHTNING SHIELD
(protects you from electric attacks
and Badnik energy balls).
Pick up gold Rings to score
more points!
When you are in trouble,
call for TAILS! He will airli you
out of danger or take you to
areas which are otherwise
unreachable.
When you’re hit by enemies, you
drop and lose all the Rings you
have collected!
In the bonus stage, you enter the
gumball machine!
Dr. Eggman appears at the end
of each stage. Destroy him to
score a bonus and advance to
the next stage!
At the end of each stage, find
the Chaos Emerald! PICK it up
to score even more points!
When you are underwater,
you can’t last too long without
breathing! Jump into giant air
bubbles that rise up from the
ground, or jump out of the
water! If you wait too long, the
UNDERWATER TIMER will count
down to zero, and you’ll lose a life!
Activating a water shield allows
you to breathe underwater until
the shield breaks!
When you’ve picked up 10
Rings, tiny stars will appear. SPIN
through the tiny ring of stars
to enter the GUMBALL BONUS
STAGE—and score extra points!
You can only enter this bonus
stage once per stage.
Super Ring gumballs in the
bonus stage are worth extra
points. Bounce o of bumpers
and pick up more Rings to earn
more points! Run through the
“1-UP” ICON to earn an extra life!
When Sonic drops down out of
the screen, he will be out of the
bonus stage and back to where
he was before he entered it.
When you are under massive
attack, call on Tails for help.
However, YOU CAN ONLY
CALL ON TAILS THREE TIMES PER
STAGE—so call on him wisely!

CONTROLS
ON/START • Turn on unit.
• Start game (or begin new game from stage 1
aer a GAME OVER).
• Start each stage.
• Exit pause (and continue play).
PAUSE • Pause game. (The game will also pause
automatically when you complete a stage.
Press ON/START button when you’re ready to
begin the next stage!)
SOUND • Turn sound ON or OFF.
OFF • Turn o unit. (Automatically switches o aer
three minutes of inactivity.)
ACL • Reset unit. (See battery insertion info above.)
• Move le.
• Move right.
• Jump up.
• Move down (aer jumping up).
TAILS • Call for Tails to airli you out of danger or take
you to areas which are otherwise unreachable.
SPIN • Perform your famous “Spin Dash” attack.
• Enter GUMBALL BONUS STAGE once tiny stars
appear.
PICK • Pick up gold Rings and Chaos Emeralds
when they appear.

SCORING
You’ll score points for all your hard work:
50 POINTS for each gold Ring you pick up.
100 POINTS for defeating Rhinobots, Monkey Dudes,
Catakillers, and Bugernauts.
200 POINTS for defeating the Mega Chopper, Pointdexter,
and Tunnelbot.
2000 POINTS for picking up the Emerald (aer defeating
Dr. Eggman) in stages 1–5.
4000 POINTS for defeating Dr. Eggman (2000 points) and
picking up the Emerald (an extra 2000 points)
at the end of stage 6.
