CRU Dataport DX115 kit installation
Introduction
This document describes how to install the CRU Dataport DX115® removable media kit in an HP
workstation. The DX115 kit enables you to install removable media in your workstation.

Warnings and cautions

CAUTION: Static electricity can damage the electronic components of the workstation. Before
beginning these procedures, be sure you discharge static electricity by briefly touching a grounded metal
object.
CAUTION: To prevent damage to the workstation, observe the following Electrostatic Discharge
(ESD) precautions while performing the system parts removal and replacement procedures:
— Work on a static-free mat.
— Wear a static strap to ensure that any accumulated electrostatic charge is discharged from your body
to the ground.
— Create a common ground for the equipment you are working on by connecting the static-free mat,
static strap, and peripheral units to that piece of equipment.
NOTE: HP accessories are for use in HP Workstation products. They have been extensively tested
for reliability and are manufactured to high quality standards.

Step 1—Preparing for component installation
NOTE: Workstation models vary. All illustrations are examples only.
Accessing the internal components of the workstation
1. If you need help preparing the workstation for this installation, consult the removal and replacement
procedures in the service guide for your workstation at http://www.hp.com/support/
workstation_manuals.
NOTE: For the HP Workstation series, these procedures are also available in the User
Guide on the Documentation and Diagnostics CD that shipped with your workstation.
2. Power down the workstation, and then disconnect the power cord.
3. Power down all external devices, and then disconnect them from the workstation.
4. Remove the side access panel.
Step 2—Installing the DX115 case into the optical drive bay
See the steps for the applicable workstation model in the following sections.
CAUTION: Insert or remove the carrier (with a disk drive) only when the workstation is shut down.
Other procedures may result in system hangs, data loss, or even drive damage. The component
supplier’s user guide describes a procedure for inserting or removing the carrier (with drive) while the
workstation is booted and then powering the drive via the power switch on the enclosure. Microsoft
Windows XP and Windows Vista do not support this action.
NOTE: The CRU Dataport DX115 does not fit in all optical drive bays. It is longer than most optical
drives. Choose the optical bay for the CRU Dataport DX115 which best fits your workstation
configuration.
CAUTION: HP workstation SAS disk drives are configured with a SAS to SATA adapter. To ensure
proper connection, you must remove the adapter before continuing with installation. This is shown in
the figure below.

HP 400 Workstations and HP xw4000 Workstation series
1. Remove the front bezel from the workstation to access the optical bays.
a. Lift the tab .
b. Pivot the bezel to disengage the lower edge

2. Install four (supplied) M3 x 5mm screws (black) in the lower four mounting holes.
3. Install the DX115 case in the optical drive bay using the quick release system.

4. Install one (supplied) M3 x 5mm screw (black) for each DX115 unit for shipping support as shown.
CAUTION: Failure to install the shipping screw might result in damage to the removable hard
drive system.

HP xw6000 Workstation series
1. Remove the front bezel from the workstation. See Figure 2Removing the front bezel on page 4.
2. Remove and discard the counter-sunk screw at the side of the DX115 case. This hole is used for
the shipping screw.
3. Install the DX115 case in the optical drive bay using the quick release system.
4. Install one (supplied) 6-32 x 1/4 in. screw (silver) for each DX115 unit for shipping support.
CAUTION: Failure to install the shipping screw might result in damage to the removable hard
drive system.
HP 600 and 800 Workstations
1. For HP 800 Workstations, remove the airflow guide to enable access to the optical bays.
2. For HP 800 Workstations, remove the card support to enable access to the system board
connectors.

3. Install the DX115 case in the optical drive bay using the quick release system.
4. Install one (supplied) M3 x 5mm screw (black) for each DX115 unit for shipping support.
CAUTION: Failure to install the shipping screw might result in damage to the removable hard
drive system.

HP xw8000 and xw9000 Workstation series
1. Remove the front bezel from the workstation. See Figure 2Removing the front bezel on page 4.
2. Install the DX115 case in the optical drive bay using the quick release system.
3. Install one (supplied) M3 x 5mm screw (black) for each DX115 unit for shipping support.
CAUTION: Failure to install the shipping screw might result in damage to the removable hard
drive system.
Step 3—Installing a hard disk in the DX115 carrier
CAUTION: Insert or remove the carrier (with a disk drive) only when the workstation is shut down.
Other procedures may result in system hangs, data loss, or even drive damage. The component
supplier’s user guide describes a procedure for inserting or removing the carrier (with drive) while the
workstation is booted and then powering the drive via the power switch on the enclosure. Microsoft
Windows XP and Windows Vista do not support this action.
NOTE: You do not have to remove the DX115 case from the workstation for this step.
Install your hard drive in the DX115 carrier. For detailed instructions, see the following:

Step 4—Completing the workstation assembly
CAUTION: Insert or remove the carrier (with a disk drive) only when the workstation is shut down.
Other procedures may result in system hangs, data loss, or even drive damage. The component
supplier’s user guide describes a procedure for inserting or removing the carrier (with drive) while the
workstation is booted and then powering the drive via the power switch on the enclosure. Microsoft
Windows XP and Windows Vista do not support this action.
1. After the drive is installed in the carrier, insert the drive carrier in the case.
a. Press the handle in .
b. Use the key

to lock the carrier if shipping the unit .
2. Connect the power and data

cables to the primary (upper) ports on the unit.
3. Connect the opposite end of the data cable to the appropriate connector on the system board or
controller card.
●Connect SATA drives to SATA ports, and SAS drives to SAS ports, starting with the lowest-
numbered available port.
●For HP 400 and 600 Workstations, the blind-mate cables for the internal hard drive bays
may require adjustment at the system board, based on the workstation drive configuration.
Consult the User Guide for your workstation for additional information.

4. To prepare your installed hard drive for operation, see the appropriate hard drive documentation.
5. If shipping the unit, use the key to lock the carrier and install the shipping screw as described in
the previous steps.
CAUTION: Failure to lock the drive during shipment might result in damage to your removable
hard drive system.

6. Replace workstation bezel if applicable.
7. Reinstall the card support, if applicable.
8. Reinstall the airflow guide, if applicable.
9. Reinstall the side access panel.
10. Reconnect power to the workstation and all external devices.
11. Restore power to the workstation and all external devices.
