Who this Manual is For
This manual is for anyone who wants to install accessories in their
HP NetVectra Net PC or Small PC.
Important Ergonomic Information
It is strongly recommended that you read the ergonomic information
before using your Net PC. To view this information you can connect to
HP’s ergonomic web site at http://www.hp.com/ergo.
Important Safety Information
WARNING If you have any doubt that you can lift the Net PC or display safely, do not try
to move it without help.
For your safety, always connect the equipment to a grounded wall outlet.
Always use a power cord with a properly grounded plug, such as the one
provided with this equipment, or one in compliance with your national
regulations. This Net PC is disconnected from the power by removing the
power cord from the power outlet. This means the Net PC must be located
close to a power outlet that is easily accessible.
For your safety, never remove the Net PC’s cover without first removing the
power cord from the power outlet, and any connection to a
telecommunications network. Always replace the cover before switching the
Net PC on again.
To avoid electric shock, do not open the power supply. There are no user-
serviceable parts inside.
There is a danger of explosion if the battery is incorrectly installed. For your
safety, never attempt to recharge, disassemble, or burn the old battery.
Replace only with the same or equivalent type recommended by the
manufacturer. The battery in this Net PC is a lithium battery that does not
contain heavy metals. Nevertheless, in order to protect the environment, do
not dispose of batteries in household waste. Please return used batteries to
the shop from which you bought them, to the dealer from whom you

purchased your Net PC, or to HP so they can either be recycled or disposed of
in a sound way. Returned used batteries will be accepted free of charge.
If your Net PC is multimedia or if you add a sound card to your Net PC:
Always turn the volume down before connecting headphones or speakers, to
avoid discomfort from unexpected noise or static. Listening to loud sounds for
prolonged periods of time may permanently damage your hearing. Before
putting on headphones, place them around your neck and turn the volume
down. When you put on the headphones, slowly increase the volume until you
find a comfortable listening level. When you can hear comfortably and clearly,
without distortion, leave the volume control in that position.
If you have a modem:
Do not attempt to connect this product to the phone line during a lightning
storm. Never install telephone jacks in wet locations unless the telephone line
has been disconnected at the network interface. Never touch uninsulated
telephone wires or terminals unless the telephone line has been disconnected
at the network interface. Use caution when installing or modifying telephone
lines. Avoid using a telephone (other than a cordless type) during an lightning
storm. There may be a risk from lightning.
Do not use the telephone to report a gas leak in the vicinity of the leak.
Never touch or remove the Communications board without first removing the
connection to the telephone network.

WARNING For your safety, never remove the Net PC’s cover without first
removing the power cord from the power outlet and any connection to
a telecommunication network. Always replace the cover before
switching the Net PC on again.

1Switch off the display and computer.
2Disconnect all power cables and any telecommunication cables.
3Remove the screws at the rear of the Net PC.
4Slide the cover back a few inches.

5Pull the sides outward and lift off the cover.

1Ensure that you have installed all your accessories and that all
internal cables are properly connected and safely routed.
2Pulling out the sides, lower the cover onto the Net PC as shown.

1Remove the cover (described on page 9).
2Remove the two screws at the top of the chassis.
3Carefully slide the front chassis forward until it is free of the main
chassis, then place it upside down on the main chassis. Be careful not
to pull or damage the cables.

4On the system board, remove the front panel connector and the
floppy disk connector (if you have one).
5Remove the connectors from the hard disk drive.
6Remove the connector from the CD-ROM drive (if you have one).
7Lift off the front chassis and place it on a flat work surface. You are
now ready to install accessories, such as a slim CD-ROM drive or slim
floppy drive.

CAUTION Static electricity can damage electronic components.
Turn all equipment OFF. Don’t let your clothes touch the accessory.
To equalize the static electricity, rest the accessory bag on top of the
Net PC while you are removing the accessory from the bag. Handle the
accessory as little as possible and with care.
Installing Main Memory
Your Net PC is supplied with main memory. If you need more main
memory to run your application software, you can install up to a total of
256 MB (2 x 128 MB).
Main memory is available in modules of 32 MB, 64 MB or 128 MB.
There are two sockets for installing up to two memory modules.

Installing Memory
To install a main memory module:
1Disconnect the computer’s power supply cord and any connection to
a telecommunication network.
2Remove the computer’s cover (described on page 9).
3Remove the front chassis and place it upside down on the rear of the
Net PC (described in the section "Removing the Front Chassis", on
page 12). It is not necessary to disconnect any cables.
4If you need to remove a main memory module, open the two tabs and
remove the module.
5Align the notches in the memory module with the socket. Slide the
memory module into the slot at 90° to the system board. Close the
two tabs.
6Replace the front chassis, ensuring that all cables are properly
routed as you slide it carefully into place.
7Replace the two screws to secure the front chassis.
8Replace the cover (described on page 10) and reconnect all cables
and power cords.

Replacing the Hard Disk Drive
Your Net PC has one hard disk drive installed. You can replace the
installed disk drive with a larger disk drive.
CAUTION Handle the hard disk drive with care. Avoid shocks and violent
movement as this can cause damage to the hard disk drive’s internal
components.
Make sure that the files on the hard disk are backed up on another
device before proceeding with these instructions.
Removing the Hard Disk Drive
1Switch off the display and computer, and disconnect the power
supply cables and any telecommunication cables.
2Remove the computer’s cover (described on page 9).
3Remove the front chassis (described on page 12).
4Disconnect the power and data cables at the rear of the drive.

Installing the Hard Disk Drive
1Carefully slide the hard disk drive into the shelf, then secure the
drive with the screws.
2Place the front chassis upside down on the rear of the Net PC.
3Connect the power and data cables to the rear of the drive. The
connectors are shaped to go in one way only.
4Reconnect the front panel cable, the CD-ROM drive cable (if you
have a CD-ROM drive), and the floppy disk drive cable (if you have a
floppy disk drive).
5Replace the front chassis, ensuring that all cables are properly
routed as you slide it carefully into place.
6Replace the two screws to secure the front chassis.
7Replace the cover (described on page 10) and reconnect all cables
and power cords.

Installing a Slim CD-ROM Drive
WARNING To avoid electrical shock and harm to your eyes by laser light, do not
open the laser module. The laser module should be serviced by service
personnel only. Do not attempt to make any adjustment to the laser
unit. Refer to the label on the CD-ROM for power requirements and
wavelength. This product is a class 1 laser product.
1Switch off the display and computer, and disconnect the power
supply cables and any telecommunication cables.
2Remove the computer’s cover (described on page 9).
3Remove the front chassis (described on page 12).
4For improved access, remove the hard disk drive (described on
page 17).
5Attach the CD-ROM rail to the CD-ROM drive.
6Remove the CD-ROM filler plate from the front panel and then slide
in the CD-ROM drive.
