IEEE-1394b PCI Express Card installation
Introduction
This document describes how to install an IEEE-1394 PCI Express (PCIe) card in HP series, xw9400,
and xw4600 Workstations.

CAUTION: Static electricity can damage the electronic components of the workstation. Before
beginning these procedures, be sure you discharge static electricity by briefly touching a grounded metal
object.
CAUTION: To prevent damage to the workstation, observe the following Electrostatic Discharge
(ESD) precautions while performing the system parts removal and replacement procedures:
— Work on a static-free mat.
— Wear a static strap to ensure that any accumulated electrostatic charge is discharged from your body
to the ground.
— Create a common ground for the equipment you are working on by connecting the static-free mat,
static strap, and peripheral units to that piece of equipment.
NOTE: HP accessories are for use in HP Workstation products. They have been extensively tested
for reliability and are manufactured to high quality standards.

Step 1—Preparing for component installation
NOTE: Workstation models vary. All illustrations are examples only.
Download and install updates
1. Check for available system BIOS updates specified for your HP workstation model and operating
system at http://www.hp.com/go/workstationsupport.
2. Install the system BIOS updates, if available.
Accessing the internal components of the workstation
1. If you need help preparing the workstation for this installation, consult the removal and replacement
procedures in the service guide for your workstation at http://www.hp.com/support/
workstation_manuals.
NOTE: For the HP Workstation series, these procedures are also available in the User
Guide on the Documentation and Diagnostics CD that shipped with your workstation.
2. Power down the workstation, and then disconnect the power cord.
3. Power down all external devices, and then disconnect them from the workstation.
4. Remove the side access panel.
Removing components
1. If present, remove the card support to enable access to the expansion slots and system board
connectors.
2. On HP xw4600, 400, and 600 Workstations, there is a plastic plug or adhesive label over the
1394 port on the front of the workstation.
a. Remove the front bezel.
b. Remove the plastic cover or adhesive label over the port on the front of the workstation.

3. Select an appropriate PCIe expansion slot and remove the slot cover. The IEEE-1394 card may
be installed in any unused PCIe expansion slot.
NOTE: To identify an available PCIe expansion slot, see the service label on the side access
panel.

Step 2—Installing the IEEE-1394 card
1. Install the IEEE-1394 card in the selected PCIe expansion slot.
2. Lower the expansion slot retention clamp and close the retention clamp lever

Step 3—Configuring the cabling
NOTE: To locate the appropriate connectors on the system board, see the service label on the
workstation access panel.

1. Connect a mini-plug power connector from the workstation power supply to the power connector
on the IEEE-1394 card .
2. Connect the front IEEE-1394 I/O cable to the I/O connector on the IEEE-1394 card

HP 600, 800 and xw9400 Workstations power and data cabling
1. Connect the center connector of the Y-adapter power cable to the workstation optical drive power
supply .
2. Connect one end of the Y-adapter power cable to the optical drive power connector

3. Connect the other end of the Y-adapter power cable to the power connector on the IEEE-1394 card
.
NOTE: For HP 800 Workstations and HP xw9400 Workstations, do not unplug the front I/O
connector from the system board.
4. For the HP 600 Workstation, connect the front IEEE1394 I/O cable to the I/O connector on the
IEEE 1394 card. (Shown above in Figure 3Connecting the IEEE 1394 cables on page 5,

Step 4—Reassembling the workstation
1. Reinstall the card support, if applicable.
2. Reinstall the side access panel.
3. Reconnect power to the workstation and all external devices.
4. Restore power to the workstation and all external devices.
