Components
This chapter explains the hardware features of the computer.
To see a list of hardware installed in the computer:
1. Select Start > My Computer.
2. In the left pane of the System Tasks window, select View
system information.
3. Select Hardware tab > Device Manager.
You can also add hardware or modify your device configurations
using Device Manager.
✎Components included with the computer may vary by region
and by model. The illustrations in this chapter identify the
standard external features included in most computer models.

Lights
Component Description
1Volume mute light On: Computer sound is turned off.
2Caps lock light On: Caps lock is on.
3Drive light ■Blinking green: The hard drive
is being accessed.
■Amber: HP Mobile Data Protection
with accelerometer software has
temporarily parked the internal hard
drive.

4Battery light Amber: A battery pack is charging.
Green: A battery pack is close to full
charge capacity.
Blinking amber: A battery pack that is
the only available power source has
reached a low-battery condition. When
the battery reaches a
critical
low-battery condition, the battery light
begins blinking rapidly.
Off: If the computer is plugged into
an external power source, the light
is turned off when all batteries in the
computer are fully charged. If the
computer is not plugged into an
external power source, the light
stays off.
5Power light Green: The computer is on.
Blinking green: The computer is
in standby.
Off: The computer is off or in
hibernation.
6Wireless light On: An integrated wireless device,
such as a wireless local area network
(WLAN) device and/or a Bluetooth®
device, is turned on.
7Num lock light On: Num lock is on or the embedded
numeric keypad is enabled.

Pointing devices
The pointing stick and TouchPad controls can be used
interchangeably. The following illustration and table describe the
computer pointing devices, which vary by model.
Component Description
1Pointing stick Moves the pointer and selects or
activates items on the screen.
2Left pointing stick button Functions like the left button on an
external mouse.
3TouchPad* Moves the pointer and selects or
activates items on the screen. Can be
set to perform other mouse functions,
such as scrolling, selecting, and
double-clicking.
4Left TouchPad button* Functions like the left button on an
external mouse.

5Right TouchPad button* Functions like the right button on an
external mouse.
6TouchPad scroll zone* Scrolls up or down.
7Right pointing stick button Functions like the right button on an

Microsoft® Windows®, instead of a
password logon.
2Presentation button Starts the Presentation feature.
3Volume mute button Mutes and restores computer sound.

1Function keys (6) Execute frequently used system
functions when pressed in combination
with the fn key.
✎Refer to the table in “Hotkey quick reference” for a description of
each hotkey.
2fn key Executes frequently used system
functions when pressed in combination
with a function key or the esc key.
3Windows logo key Displays the Windows Start menu.
4Windows applications key Displays a shortcut menu for items
beneath the pointer.
5Embedded numeric

Front components
Component Description
1Infrared port Provides wireless communication
between the computer and an optional
IrDA-compliant device.
2Bluetooth module
(select models only)
Sends and receives Bluetooth device
signals.
ÅExposure to Radio Frequency Radiation. The radiated
output power of this device is below the FCC radio frequency
exposure limits. Nevertheless, the device should be used in
such a manner that the potential for human contact during
normal operation is minimized. To avoid the possibility of
exceeding the FCC radio frequency exposure limits, human
proximity to the antennae should be not less than 20 cm (8
inches) during normal operation, including when the computer
display is closed.
3Display release button Opens the computer.
ÄKeep diskettes and other magnetic media away from the
magnetic fields located around the Display release button.
Magnetic fields can erase diskette data.

1USB port Connects an optional USB device.
2RJ-11 (modem) jack Connects a modem cable.
3RJ-45 (network) jack Connects a network cable.
4Power connector Connects an AC adapter.
5External monitor port Connects an optional external VGA
monitor or projector.
6S-Video-out jack Connects an optional S-Video device such
as a television, VCR, camcorder, overhead
projector, or video capture card, with an
optional, standard (4-pin) S-Video cable.
The jack’s extra 3 pins also enable an
optional S-Video-to-composite adapter to
be used with the computer.

Right-side components
Component Description
1Audio-out (headphone) jack Produces computer sound when
connected to optional powered stereo
speakers, headphones, ear buds, a
headset, or television audio.
2Audio-in (microphone) jack Connects an optional computer headset
microphone, stereo array microphone,
or monaural microphone.
3Powered USB port Provides power to a USB device, such
as an optional external MultiBay, if used
with a powered USB cable.
4PC Card slot or optional
smart card reader ✎On select models, the PC Card slot may be replaced by the smart
card reader.
If your computer has:
■a PC Card slot, it supports optional
Type I, Type II, 32-bit (CardBus), or
16-bit PC Cards.
■a smart card reader, it accepts smart
cards or Java™ Cards.
5Digital Media Slot Accepts SD (Secure Digital) Memory
Cards or MultiMediaCards.

Left-side components
Component Description
1Security cable slot Attaches an optional security cable to the
computer.
ÄThe security cable is designed to act as a deterrent, but may
not prevent the computer from being mishandled or stolen.
2Vent Enables airflow to cool internal
components.
ÄTo prevent overheating, do not obstruct vents. Use the computer
only on a hard, flat surface. Do not allow another hard surface,
such as an adjoining optional printer, or a soft surface, such as
pillows, thick rugs, or clothing to block airflow.
✎The computer fan starts up automatically to cool internal
components and prevent overheating. It is normal for the internal
fan to cycle on and off during routine operation.
3Wireless button
(select models only)*
Turns the wireless feature on or off, but
does not establish a connection.
✎To establish a wireless connection, a wireless network must
already be set up.
4USB port Connects an optional USB device.

5Info Center button Launches Info Center, which enables you
to open various software solutions.
6Power switch* When the computer is
■Off, slide toward the front of the
computer and release to turn on the
computer.
■In standby, slide toward the front of
the computer and release to exit
standby.
■In hibernation, slide toward the front
of the computer and release to exit
hibernation.
If the computer has stopped responding
and Windows shutdown procedures
cannot be used, slide toward the front of
the computer and hold for at least
5 seconds to turn off the computer.
7Speaker Produces computer sound.

functions of the power features, refer to the user guides located in the Help
and Support Center.

1Docking connector Connects the computer to an optional
docking device.
2Accessory battery connector Connects an optional accessory
battery.
3Vents (2) Enable airflow to cool internal
components.

Wireless antennae
On select computer models, 2 wireless antennae send and receive
wireless device signals. These antennae are not visible from the
outside of the computer.
For wireless regulatory notices pertaining to your region, refer to
the Regulatory, Safety and Environmental Notices located in the
Help and Support Center.
✎For optimal transmission, keep the areas immediately around
the antennae free from obstructions.

1HP Smart AC Adapter Converts AC power to DC power.
2Power cord* Connects an AC adapter to an
AC outlet.
3Primary battery pack* Powers the computer when the
computer is not plugged into external
power.
4Modem cable* Connects the internal modem to an
RJ-11 telephone jack or to a
country-specific modem adapter.
5Country-specific modem
adapter (included by region
as required)*
Adapts the modem cable to a
non-RJ-11 telephone jack.
*Modem cables, battery packs, and power cords vary in appearance
by region and country.

Labels
The labels affixed to the computer provide information you may
need when you troubleshoot systems problems or travel
internationally with the computer.
■Service tag—Provides the product brand and series name,
serial number (s/n), and product number (p/n) of your
computer. Have this information available when you contact
Customer Care. The service tag label is affixed to the bottom
of the computer. The information on the service tag is also
available through the Help and Support Center.
■Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity—Contains the
Microsoft® Windows® Product Key. You may need the
Product Key to update or troubleshoot the operating system.
This certificate is affixed to the bottom of the computer.
■Regulatory label—Provides regulatory information about the
computer. The regulatory label is affixed to the bottom of the
computer.
■Modem approval label—Provides regulatory information
about the modem and lists the agency approval markings
required by some of the countries in which the modem has
been approved for use. You may need this information when
traveling internationally. The modem approval label is affixed
to the bottom of the computer.
■Wireless certification label(s)—Provide information about
optional wireless devices and the approval markings of some
of the countries in which the devices have been approved for
use. An optional device may be a wireless local area network
(WLAN) device or an optional Bluetooth® device. If your
computer model includes one or more wireless devices, one
certification label per wireless device is included with your
computer. You may need this information when traveling
internationally. Wireless certification labels are affixed to the
bottom of this computer.
