This document describes how to install and initially configure the HP MSM317 Access Device models J9422A (USA) and
JJ9423A (worldwide). These products are hereafter referred to as access device.

The access device features the following external interfaces:

Port 1, 2, 3, 4 •Auto-sensing 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port with RJ-45 connector.
•Managed by the access device.
•Port 1 provides PoE for use by devices such as a VoIP phone.
•Any IP address that is assigned to the Uplink port is also assigned to Ports 1, 2, 3, and 4.
Port 5 •Port with RJ-45 connector.
•Not managed by the access device.
•Traffic on this port is hard-wired to the Pass Through port on the rear of the access device and is
not handled by the internal Ethernet switch.

DescriptionRear interfaces
Uplink port (RJ-45 or punch-down
block)
•Auto-sensing 10/100 Mbps Ethernet port with both an RJ-45 connector and
punch-down block. Only one connector can be used at a time.
•Managed by the access device.
•Ports 1, 2, 3, and 4 are connected to the Uplink port by way of the internal
Ethernet switch.
•The Uplink port is used to connect the access device to a network through which
it can receive power from a PoE power source and establish a management
tunnel with a controller. Traffic from devices connected to Ports 1 to 4, and the
wireless port, also reaches the network through the Uplink port.
•By default, this port is configured as a DHCP client. If no DHCP server assigns
an address to this port on startup, the IP address for the Uplink port defaults to
192.168.1.1.
•The wireless port is bridged to the Uplink port (as a result it shares the same IP
address).
Pass Through port •Port with an RJ-45 connector. Hard-wired to port 5.
•Not managed by the access device.

CAUTION: Do not connect both the Punch-down block and the Uplink port to a network. Only
one connection can be used at a time.
To ensure good connections when using the punch-down block:
•Use solid conductor cables instead of stranded cables.
•Install cables into the individual punch-down connectors using a 110-style tool.

Integrated switch
Ports 1 to 4 and the Uplink port are connected to the built-in Ethernet switch. Each port on the
switch can be a member of a VLAN. These port-based VLANs let you reduce broadcast traffic and
increase network security.
Reset button
The reset button is located to the left of Port 1. When the access device is fully installed, the reset
button is covered by the trim panel to prevent tampering.
Using the reset button
•To restart the access device: Use the end of a paper clip to press and quickly release the
button. This is equivalent to power-cycling the access device.
•To reset the access device to factory defaults: Use the end of a paper clip to press and hold
the reset button until the status lights to the left of Port 2 (Power, Uplink, P2) blink three times,
then release the button.
NOTE: Resetting the access device to factory defaults deletes all configuration/provisioning
settings and enables the DHCP client on the Uplink port. If no DHCP server assigns an address to
the access device on startup, the IP address for the Uplink port defaults to 192.168.1.1.
Radio and antennas
The access device contains a single 802.11b/g radio with integrated dual 2.4 GHz antennas
supporting transmit/receive diversity. The radio can create a single wireless cell. Output power
of the radio is software-controllable using the management tool on the controller to which the access
device is connected.
The polar pattern for the antennas projects to the front of the access device with minimum radiation
to the rear. This permits two access devices to be installed back-to-back in adjacent rooms with
reduced interference.
NOTE: Wireless devices cannot communicate with wired devices connected to the same access
device.
Faceplate and trim panel
The access device includes the following faceplates and trim panels (see Figure 3 (page 8)):
•US faceplate and trim panel designed to fit a single-gang electrical outlet box (conforming to
NEMA-WD6), with a minimum depth of 1.4 inches.
•International faceplate and trim panel designed to fit a single-gang electrical outlet box
(conforming to BS 4662), with a minimum depth of 35mm.

Power
The access device receives power through the Uplink port (either via the RJ-45 connector or
punch-down block) and can supply PoE power on Port 1. The Ethernet connection to this port must
be a standard 10/100 link delivered over category 5 (or better) structured cabling.
Two PoE power settings are available as follows:
•When set to 802.11af Class 1 to 2, Port 1 supports an 802.3af Class 1 or Class 2 device
drawing a maximum of 6.49 watts.
•For the access device to provide 802.11af Class 0 and 3 support, it must be powered by an
802.3at or PoE+ source with an output power greater than 23 watts. For example, the new
HP 2910al-POE+ switch provides up to 30 watts per port.
•The Uplink port must be connected to an 802.3af compliant power source.
CAUTION: The access device will be powered off by the PoE power source if there is an
over-current situation.
The HP Switch 2610 series features several models with PoE support that can be used in conjunction
with the access device to build a cost-effective wireless networking infrastructure.
Safety information
Take note of the following safety information during installation of the access device:
Professional installation required
WARNING! Prior to installing or using a controller, consult with a professional installer trained
in RF installation and knowledgeable in local regulations including building and wiring codes,
safety, channel, power, indoor/outdoor restrictions, and license requirements for the intended
country. It is the responsibility of the end user to ensure that installation and use comply with local
safety and radio regulations.

Cabling: You must use the appropriate cables, and where applicable, surge protection, for your
given region. For compliance with EN55022 Class-B emissions requirements use shielded Ethernet
cables.
Country of use: In some regions, you are prompted to select the country of use during setup. Once
the country has been set, the controller will automatically limit the available wireless channels,
ensuring compliant operation in the selected country. Entering the incorrect country may result in
illegal operation and may cause harmful interference to other systems.
Safety: Take note of the following safety information during installation:
•Communications wires and cables which are installed in building locations shall be listed CM
type in accordance with ANSI/NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code (NEC), in particular
Section 800.179 (Communications Wires and Cables).
•Conductors and equipment shall be installed in accordance with ANSI/NFPA 70, the National
Electrical Code (NEC), in particular Section 725.133 (Installation of Conductors and Equipment
in Cables, Compartments, Cable Trays, Enclosures, Manholes, Outlet Boxes, Device Boxes,
and Raceways for Class 2 and Class 3 Circuits).
•Wiring methods and materials shall be in accordance with NFPA 70, the National Electrical
Code (NEC), in particular Section 725.130.
•The access device does not have a power switch. It is powered-on when the Uplink port is
plugged into a PoE power source.
•The access device and all interconnected equipment must be installed indoors within the same
building (except for outdoor models / antennas), including all PoE-powered network connections
as described by Environment A of the IEEE 802.3af standard.
•It is normal for the rear metal cover of the access device to get hot during operation. The cover
is a heat sink and is used to dissipate the heat generated by the access device.

2 Installing
Installing the faceplate and trim panel
Place the faceplate over the front of the access device and press firmly to snap it into place. The
trim panel snaps into place on top of the faceplate.
Removal
To remove the faceplate, slightly push in two tabs on one side of the access device body with a
small flat screwdriver. To remove the trim panel, pry off the trim panel with a small flat screwdriver.

Installing the access device
Install the access device as directed in the MSM317 Installation Guide provided with the unit and
available online. The Installation Guide describes how to physically install a factory-default access
device in an electrical outlet box and make basic connections. For most installations, installing a
factory-default access device is sufficient, as the access device will automatically discover and
connect with a controller after it is powered on. For routed network topologies however, provisioning
of the access device may be required before installation to ensure that the discovery process is
successful. See “Provisioning the access device” (page 13)
CAUTION: It is recommended that the physical installation be performed with the Uplink cable
inactive. However, if the cable is active, you must leave it connected once plugged in so that the
access device can discover its controller. Wait at least 5 minutes before disconnecting a live Uplink
cable from the access device after first connecting it.
NOTE: The access device operates in controlled mode (autonomous mode is not supported). This
means it must establish a network connection with a controller before it can become fully operational.

Checking status after installation
During installation, the Uplink port must be connected to a network with a PoE power source and
a controller. Once the network, PoE source, and controller are all active, the status LEDs can be
observed to verify that the access device is operating correctly.

Status LEDs
The status LEDs are located to the left of Port 2 and to the right of Port 4. When the access device
is fully installed, the status LEDs are not visible because they are covered by the trim panel. See
Figure 1 (page 5) for the location of the LEDs.
The status LEDs provide the following information while the access device attempts to discover and
establish a management tunnel with a controller. See Working with Controlled APs in the MSM7xx
Controllers Configuration Guide for more information about the discovery process.

or more controllers with the same priority setting. The
Power and Uplink LEDs blink alternately and quickly. P2
LED is off. access device is unable to connect with either controller
until the priority conflict is resolved.
The access device is attempting to establish an Ethernet
connection on the Uplink port.
Power and Uplink LEDs blink slowly.
Once the discovery process is complete, and the access device has established a secure
management tunnel to a controller, the lights provide the following information:

Connecting cables to the access device
After installation is complete, connect equipment to the access device as follows:
•Connect equipment that requires PoE to Port 1.
•Connect other equipment to Ports 2, 3, or 4.
•Connect any equipment that will use the pass-through feature (such as a digital telephone) to
Port 5.

3 Initially configuring
IMPORTANT: The access device is part of the HP MSM family of wireless networking products.
As such, it shares many of the same configuration options available on other MSM APs, and is
configured in the same way by using the management tool on a controller. See the MSM7xx
Controllers Configuration Guide for complete information on how to configure all options on the
access device, except for the following two items which are covered in this guide:
•Locally provisioned settings (See “Provisioning the access device” below.)
•Switch port configuration (See “Configuring the switch ports” (page 18).)
Provisioning the access device
Provisioning is the means by which you change the factory default IP addressing method and
controller discovery settings on the access device. These settings apply to the access device Uplink
port only.
NOTE: Provisioning settings are retained when the access device is restarted or power cycled,
but are removed when the access device is reset to factory defaults.
Provisioning is generally not required when deploying the access device in simple (unrouted layer
2) network topologies. However, it is required when:
•The access device does not have layer 2 connectivity to a controller and it is not possible to
control the DNS or DHCP server configuration. For example, when the access device is on a
different subnet than the controller and routing is required to reach it.
•The access device needs to be deployed with a static IP address assigned to the Uplink port.
•You want to accelerate the discovery process on networks with a large number of VLANs, or
when many VLANs are connected to many service controllers.
For more information on how provisioning and discovery work, see Working with Controlled APs
in the MSM7xx Controllers Configuration Guide.
Provisioning can be done in two ways:
•Use a controller to provision the access device. This method enables multiple access devices
to be provisioned at the same time, with the same settings (does not support setting a static

IP address, however). For complete details, see Working with Controlled APs in the MSM7xx
Controllers Configuration Guide.
•Directly provision the access device: In its factory default state, the access device provides a
provisioning menu with the same options that are available when using a controller to provision
the access device. If you want to assign a static IP to the access device, you must use this
method. For complete details, see the next section.
Directly provisioning the access device
NOTE:
•Direct provisioning of the access device can only be done when the access device is in its
factory-default state, meaning that it has not been provisioned or has not discovered a controller
since last being reset to factory defaults. To force an access device into its factory-default state,

•If you are provisioning multiple access devices, do not connect them all to the same PoE switch
if no DHCP server is present, since they all default to the same IP address (192.168.1.1).
1. Configure your computer to use a static IP address in the range 192.168.1.2 to
192.168.1.254 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Set the default gateway to
192.168.1.1, and the DNS server to 192.168.1.1.
2. Disable any wireless connection on your computer.
3. Connect the Ethernet cables:
•If using a PoE switch, first ensure it is in its factory-default state, then power it off, and
disconnect all devices. Then, connect an Ethernet cable from your computer to the switch
and connect another Ethernet cable from a POE port of the switch to the Uplink port on
the rear of the access device.
•If using a PoE injector, first ensure that it is powered off. Then, connect an Ethernet cable
from your computer to the data in port of the POE injector and connect another Ethernet
cable from the data and power out port of the injector to the Uplink port on the rear of
the access device.
4. To power on the access device, power on either the PoE switch or injector.
5. Initially, the access device power light blinks once every two seconds. Wait approximately
one minute until it begins blinking once per second before proceeding to the next step.
6. Open a web browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer 8+ or Mozilla Firefox 3+) on your computer
and specify the address https://192.168.1.1.
7. At the security certificate prompt, select the option that allows you to continue to the Website.
8. On the Login page, specify admin for both Username and Password and then select Login.
The provisioning tool home page opens.

9. Click Provision at the bottom of the home page and provision the access device via settings
on the Connectivity and Discovery pages. This is discussed in detail in the following sections.
Connectivity page
Use the Connectivity page to define addressing settings for the Uplink port.

Settings
Interface
Set the VLAN ID that will be used on the Uplink port for management traffic. This VLAN is only
used for the discovery of a controller and does not apply to user traffic sent on Ports 1 to 4 or the
Uplink port. To apply a VLAN to a port for user traffic, see “VLAN” (page 28).

Assign IP address via
Select how the access device will obtain an IP address for the Uplink port.
DHCP client
Enable this option to have the Uplink port act as a DHCP client and request an IP address from
a DHCP server. The access device sends DHCP requests on the specified VLAN if defined. If
no VLAN is defined, the request is sent untagged.
Static
Select this option to manually assign an IP address to the Uplink port.
Static IP settings
When you select Static for Assign IP address via, configure addressing settings as follows:
IP address
Specify the IP address that you want to assign to the Uplink port.
Address mask
Specify the appropriate subnet mask for the IP address you specified.
Default gateway
Specify the IP address of the default gateway.
802.1X
Enable this option when the access device Uplink port is connected to a secured switch port that
requires 802.1X authentication. Once the access device is authenticated, controller discovery
proceeds as usual.
NOTE: If this option is enabled and the access device Uplink port is connected to a unsecured
switch port, 802.1X is ignored and discovery proceeds as usual.
In this type of environment. deployment can be a challenge, since the access device must already
be configured with the correct 802.1X username and password before it is connected to the secured
switch port. There are three solutions to this problem:
•During access device deployment, 802.1X is deactivated on the secured switch port. The
access device is connected and provisioned with the correct 802.1X settings by the controller.
Once the access device is synchronized, 802.1X authentication can be enabled on the secured
switch ports.
•Before being deployed, the access device is first connected to a controller via a non-secure
switch. The access device is provisioned and synchronized with the correct 802.1X settings
by the controller. Next, the access device is deployed to its final location.
•Before being deployed, you could connect the access device to a computer and configure the
appropriate 802.1X settings using the access device provisioning interface. This solution is
effective for small deployments, but is not a realistic option for a large deployments.
IMPORTANT: The secured switch port is expected to be multi-homed, so that once authentication
is successful, tagged and untagged traffic for any MAC addresses (including wireless clients) will
be accepted by the switch.
EAP method
Select the extensible authentication protocol method to use:
PEAP version 0: Authentication occurs using MS-CHAP V2.
PEAP version 1: Authentication occurs using EAP-GTC.
TTLS: The Tunneled Transport Layer Security protocol requires that the switch first authenticate
itself to the access device by sending a PKI certificate. The access device authenticates itself
to the secured switch port by supplying a username and password over the secure tunnel.

Username
Username that the access device will use inside the TLS tunnel.
Password / Confirm password
Password assigned to the access device.
Anonymous
Name used outside the TLS tunnel by all three EAP methods. If this field is blank, then the value
specified for Username is used instead.
Discovery page

Use the Discovery page to provision the method that the access device uses to discover a controller.
Settings
Discover using DNS
When this option is enabled, the access device attempts to connect with a controller using the
host names in the order that they appear in the list. The access device appends each host name
with the specified Domain name. For example, the screen image above shows the access
device configured to search using the following names:
•controller-1.mydomain.com
•controller-2.mydomain.com
If you define a name that contains a dot, then the domain name is not appended. For example,
if the name in the search list is controller.yourdomain.com, then no domain name is appended.
If the access device is operating as a DHCP client, the DHCP server will generally return a
domain name when it assigns an IP address to the access device. If you leave the Domain

name field on this page blank, then the DHCP-assigned domain name is appended to the
specified names instead.
Discover using IP address
When this option is enabled the access device attempts to discover a controller using the IP
addresses in the order that they appear in this list.
Location page
You can optionally use the Location page to record a reminder as to where your are physically
installing the access device.
Configuring the switch ports
This section explains how to configure the switch ports using the management tool on a controller.
This section assumes that you are familiar with the operation of the MSM7xx management tool. If
not, see the MSM7xx Controllers Configuration Guide.
NOTE: Wired devices cannot communicate with wireless devices connected to the same access
device.
Important note regarding controller teaming
When working with a controller team, the selections that you make in the Network Tree are different
from selections on non-teamed controllers. The instructions in this guide are written for working
with non-teamed controllers. If you are working with a controller team, you need to adjust instructions
that refer to the Network Tree as follows: Instead of selecting Controller in the Network Tree, select
Team [team-name]where [team-name]is the name assigned to the team. For example, the
following menu-selection sequence on a non-teamed controller:
Controller > Controlled APs >> Configuration > Switch ports
becomes:
Team [team-name] > Controlled APs >> Configuration > Switch ports
on a controller team. See also, Controller Teaming in the MSM7xx Controllers Configuration Guide.
Switch ports page
This page lists all supported ports on the access device switch, indicates if the ports are enabled,
and lists their VLAN number (if assigned). To define settings for a port, select the port name in the
list. This opens the Port configuration page described in the next section.

The Switch port page presents different options depending on how you open it.
•If you select Controller > Controlled APs >> Configuration > Switch ports, you see the following
page:
•If you select Controller > Controlled APs > [group] >> Configuration > Switch ports, you see
the following page:
•If you select Controller > Controlled APs > [group] > [access-device] >> Configuration > Switch
ports, you see the following page:
Inherited
Only appears at the Group or AP level.
To define configuration settings for the switch ports you must first clear the global Inherited checkbox,
or the individual checkbox available for each port.
When the global Inherited checkbox is selected, all ports inherit their configuration settings as
follows:
•APs: Settings are inherited from the group to which the access device belongs.
•Groups: Settings are inherited from the base group.
If you clear the global Inherited checkbox, you can selectively enable inheritance on a per-port
basis.

click the port name in the table.
Port
Port number.

Name
Name assigned to the port. Select the name to edit port settings.
Enabled
•Yes: The port can transmit and received data traffic.
•No: The port cannot transmit or received data traffic.
VLAN
Lists any VLAN IDs assigned to the port. If the port is configured to support Uplink tagging the
VLAN is followed by an asterisk (*).
Inherited
Use these check boxes to enable inheritance on a per-port basis.
Port configuration page
Ports 1 to 4 each have their own configuration page. The following screen shows the configuration
page for Port 1. Configuration settings for the other ports are identical, except for the Power over
Ethernet option which is only available on Port 1.
