12 Chapter 1 Preface ENWW

14 Chapter 2 Getting started ENWW
Overview
This chapter contains a tour of the HP Indigo press 3050 and a description of the press
workflow.
The HP Indigo press 3050 is a sheet-fed digital offset color press that incorporates the
patented HP ElectroInk liquid ink technology and high-speed electronic imaging to
produce fully-finished, high-volume, high-quality color print jobs. The press features an
intuitive and user-friendly interface, provides diagnostic screens that take the guess work
out of printing, accepts very large files, and simplifies the entire archiving process.
Digital offset color printing
Digital offset color printing is the HP Indigo electronic printing process that combines
high-performance digital imaging technology with the liquid ink offset printing process.
The merging of electronic imaging with the properties of liquid ink offset printing combines
the flexibility of on-demand electronic printing with the quality of offset printing.
As in offset printing, digital offset color printing transfers the inked image from the image
carrier to a blanket, and from the blanket to the substrate. However, unlike offset printing,
digital offset color printing creates a different image with each revolution without the use of
film separations or printing plates.
The press is equipped with an embedded HP Indigo raster image processor (RIP).
The HP Indigo embedded RIP enables you to process PostScript or portable document
format (PDF) files at your press station. The HP Indigo RIP is fast, has proofing and
previewing capabilities, and lets you perform light editing. It RIPs the jobs immediately
upon arrival at the station.
The press supports the HP Indigo proprietary Swift Native Accelerated Personalization
(SNAP) technology. SNAP technology enables you to print large database driven
personalization jobs without delay.

A tour of the press
The press is divided into four basic sections: the front, rear, paper input side, and paper
exit side.
HP Indigo press 3050 jobs
Jobs begin at desktop publishing stations, often at a distance from the press. At the
stations, text and graphics are designed and integrated, flats are imposed, and PostScript
or portable document format (PDF) files are created. The PostScript or PDF files are then
transferred to the press.
The system consists of two subsystems: the HP Indigo RIP and the press. The RIP
software reads the files from the pre-press station, converts them to bitmaps (one per
separation), and then sends them to the press for printing.

Print cycle
Once the job is in the print queue, the press can begin the print cycle. The following steps
are used in printing a job with the press:
zstarting up
zcharging and discharging the PIP
zinking the PIP
ztransfer to the blanket
zprinting the image
Starting up
To initiate the print cycle, in the control panel, click Print. The drums start rotating and the
support systems begin to work.
Charging and discharging the PIP
The scorotron unit electrically charges the photo-conductive imaging plate (PIP) as it
rotates on the PIP drum. The writing head laser beams selectively discharge the PIP.
A latent image forms on the PIP.

Inking the PIP
Binary ink developer (BID) units apply ink on the PIP. Ink is applied only to the discharged
areas of the PIP. Ink particles are attracted either to the BID developer drum or to the PIP.
The PIP discharged areas, which are the image areas, attract the ink particles. The
charged areas, which are the non-image areas, repel the ink. When the image on the PIP
surface is inked, the image is ready to be transferred to the blanket.
