1 Quick Start
This chapter provides a quick overview of the steps required to set up and use your
HP Integrated Remote Assistant. If you have experience setting up computer
hardware and software, you can use the following section as a brief installation
guide. Before you begin, refer to the "Integrated RA System Requirements"
section in Chapter 2.
1. Install and set up hardware (see Chapter 3 for detailed instructions)
•Set up the modem or direct connection:
àTo use an external modem: At the server, connect a serial modem
cable (not provided) to the Management Port and connect the other end
to the external modem (not provided). At the remote client, set up your
internal or external modem. Connect the server and remote client
modems to a phone line.
àTo use a direct serial connection: Connect a null-modem cable (not
provided) to the Management Port and connect the other end to the
terminal.
2. Configure the server for remote access (see Chapter 3 for detailed instructions)
•Run the server's BIOS setup program by pressing [F2] when prompted
during boot up. Confirm that the Management Port is set to COM 2 (IRQ3,
Address 2F8h).
•Insert the HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM into the server's CD-ROM
drive and reset the server.
•Choose Configure the Server from the Navigator Main Menu to setup:
modem type (or direct), administrator access (required), and paging
notification.
àIf you use Guided Setup, you will be prompted to enter Integrated
Remote Assistant information.
àIf you use Custom Setup, be sure to click Remote Management
Controller Configuration at the Custom Setup menu.
àInstall the HP Utility Partition (or a DOS bootable partition for SCO
UNIX). If you do not, you will need to install a bootable DOS partition
later in order to run DOS-based server utilities remotely.

3. Install console redirection software on the server (optional, see Chapter 4 for
detailed instructions)
For Microsoft Windows NT and 2000 servers, your server is ready for a remote or
direct connection. However, if you also want to redirect the Windows console to a
remote PC you must install pcAnywhere. If you chose:
•HP automated Windows installation, pcAnywhere is already installed on
the server
•If you did not choose to use HP's automated installation, you need to run
pcAnywhere setup, located on the \UTIL\PCA32\US\DISK1 subdirectory
on the HP NetServer Navigator.
In either case, after installation, run pcAnywhere and click the Be a Host PC
button. Right click the "RAServer" icon. Configure the properties of COM 2 and
match the speed setting you entered when configuring the Integrated RA. Check
the "launch host at startup" setting.
4. Install remote client terminal emulation software (see Chapter 5 for detailed
instructions)
•Option 1: If you are managing a server from a Windows NT 4.0 or
Windows 95, 98 or 2000 remote PC client, install the pcAnywhere
software. Run setup.exe from the \UTIL\PCA32\US\DISK1 subdirectory
on the HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM.
After installation, run pcAnywhere. First add (through Tools | Application
Options), then click the Call Online Service button. Right click the
"RAClient" icon. Verify the properties for your modem (unless using a
direct connection) and COM port.
•Option 2: If you are managing a server using third-party terminal
emulation software, install and configure the software on your remote PC
client (be sure to check the terminal requirements listed in Chapter 5).
5. Test your remote connection (see Chapter 6 for detailed instructions)
•At the server. At this point, your servers are ready to accept a call. If you
are running Windows NT or 2000 on the server, be sure that the
pcAnywhere Host is active and ready to accept a connection.
•At the remote client. Start your terminal emulation software. If you are
using pcAnywhere:

1. Start pcAnywhere at the remote PC client from the Integrated RA
program group.
2. From the pcAnywhere action button bar, click Call Online Service.
Enter the server phone number.
3. Right click on the "RAClient" connection item, click Properties and
make sure the remote client's modem baud rate matches the rate set at
the server.
4. Close Properties and return to the pcAnywhere Main menu.
5. Double-click the connection item you set up to call your server.
6. At the Login Name prompt, enter a valid administrator name that you
configured using the Integrated RA Configuration Utility (see Chapter
3).
7. At the password prompt, enter the password that you specified in the
Integrated RA Configuration Utility. When the server accepts the
password (and if no dial-back number was specified), the Integrated RA
Management Program starts up and displays its Main menu:

Once pcAnywhere (or a third-party terminal emulation program) is running on the
client, a qualified administrator can log into the server and begin using Integrated
RA to manage server operations.
In addition, on Windows NT and 2000 servers, you can graphically redirect your
server console to your remote or management client (via either modem or the
LAN) using pcAnywhere installed on both the server and the remote client.
Integrated RA Management options allow you to view information, configure
remote communications and execute commands remotely.

HP Integrated Remote Assistant
Your HP NetServer comes with a product called the HP Integrated Remote
Assistant (referred to as Integrated RA throughout the rest of this guide).
Integrated RA combines intelligent hardware and software (firmware) built into
your HP NetServer that provides administrators with instant notification of server
operations and events. Remote administration allows you to monitor your servers
over a modem as well as the LAN using terminal emulation software.
Integrated RA can be used independent of the Network Operating System (NOS)
that is running on the server. Combining Integrated RA capabilities with other
server management software tools provides the network administrator with
comprehensive server management.
Integrated RA consists of:
•Built-in Integrated RA features. Remote management features are
incorporated in system board circuitry. Your HP NetServer includes a
processor that permits server access independent of the server's operating
status. As long as the server is plugged in, the Integrated RA can continue
to monitor your server even if the server has been shut off. HP recommends
use of Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS) for both server and modem.
•Remote server control and management. A management application
stored in firmware provides allows for remote server control and
management. HP Integrated RA features include console redirection, power
switch control, event logging, and pager notification. An administrator can
use the management software to transfer files between the server and
remote client and run DOS utilities on the file server. (For example, you
can remotely update the HP NetServer's BIOS.)
•Integrated RA Configuration Utility. This DOS-based utility allows you
to tailor server operations for you particular requirements. You can use the
utility to setup parameters for pager alerts and to enter administrator names
for operation from different remote clients.
•Optimized Windows-based terminal emulation software (pcAnywhere
from Symantec Corporation). An administrator can easily connect to the
Integrated RA from a remote client to monitor server status, run
diagnostics, or remotely take over server operations. (An administrator can

also use any ANSI terminal emulator or a dedicated terminal to
communicate with the server and run the management application.)
•SNMP NetServer Agents. SNMP agents enable in-band (across the
network) gathering of information and alert generation to an SNMP-based
management client. See Chapter 6 for details on how to manage server
operations using Integrated RA.
Integrated RA in Action
Integrated RA frees you from round-the-clock server monitoring. If Integrated RA
detects a problem that it cannot correct, it immediately notifies the assigned
administrator.

In a typical scenario, upon detection of a problem, Integrated RA will:
•send a page with a message that identifies the server and the nature of the
problem

•if the server is still running, send an SNMP alert to a management client
connected to the network. The management client logs an alert from the
server.
Regardless of location, an administrator can log in to the server and use Integrated
RA to help identify and correct the server problem or problems.
Documentation
Integrated RA includes the following documentation:
•This guide, which describes how to setup and use Integrated RA to manage
your HP NetServer.
•pcAnywhere online documentation. The complete pcAnywhere User Guide
is in Adobe Acrobat PDF format on the HP NetServer Navigator CD in the
\UTIL\PCA32\XX subdirectory (where XX represents a two letter
abbreviation for your local language).
•Your HP NetServer system README file available from the HP NetServer
Navigator. Use this README files to obtain the latest information about
Integrated RA.
Integrated RA Features and Functions
Integrated RA provides a wealth of server management features that make it a
powerful remote management tool. Integrated RA works independently of the
server's processor and network operating system. Integrated RA has its own
processor, application firmware, and communications (via modem or direct serial
connection) which are entirely separate from server components. A standby power
feature keeps Integrated RA functional even when the server is shut down and
powered off.
Console Redirection
An administrator at a remote client (connected to the server via a modem or
dedicated serial cable) can view the server screen and take control of the
keyboard—performing operations as if he or she were seated at the server.
(Integrated RA supports character-based server console screens and Windows
graphics console redirection.)
Remote server reset. An administrator at a remote client has virtual control of the
server's power states. He or she can reset the server either via a hard reset, or a
complete power cycle. Console redirection is automatically enabled during reboot,

allowing start-up messages to be viewed at a remote site. An administrator can
also remotely power off (and on) the server if, as an example, the server is to be
shut down for the weekend.
Remote configuration. An administrator at a remote client can reconfigure
Integrated RA without having to be at the server. Configuration tasks that can be
performed at a remote client include the modification of notification settings and
the editing of administrator information.
Management and Security
Remote Management Security. An administrator sets passwords and dial-back
for authorized administration, allowing management by an administrator at remote
sites without compromising network security. (Up to eight administrators can be
specified for dial backs.) Integrated RA also keeps track of illegal login attempts
and chassis intrusions, and maintains an audit trail of administrator activity.
Last Screen Captured Before Automatic Server Restart (ASR). Integrated RA
automatically captures a snapshot of the server's display screen upon an ASR
event, preserving error messages or other screen activity that appeared before
restart. An administrator can view the snapshot from a remote client and use the
screen contents to troubleshoot server problems. This capability is provided by
Integrated RA and the supplied ASR driver software.
NOTE The Automatic Server Restart (ASR) driver is installed via a
separate installation utility. For more information, view the
online information accessible from the "Management" button at
the HP Information Assistant Main Menu. Your system User
Guide contains complete details for installing and using HP
Information Assistant.
Server Supervision
Environment monitoring. Integrated RA monitors voltage, temperature and fan
speed levels, and compares the samples with warning and critical threshold
parameters (specified with the SNMP agent).
Logging of server events. Integrated RA maintains a comprehensive log of server
events, tracking the nature and time of each event. This log is maintained in non-
volatile memory so that it is retained even when Integrated RA is shut down. The
log can be viewed at the server using the Log Viewer, from a management client
or using HP TopTools.

Event notification. Integrated RA will page administrators when an event occurs
that has been specified for notification. With notification, valuable administrator
time is freed from constant surveillance of the server and server down-time is kept
to a minimum. An administrator can enable or disable paging for event categories
with the Configuration Utility or from the remote client.
NOTE Integrated RA supports most popular paging services. Before
you set up Integrated RA, contact a paging service and arrange
for the number of pagers (up to eight per Integrated RA
installation) that you require.
Other Features
DOS-level file transfer. Integrated RA allows the transfer of files between the
remote client and the server. A DOS file transfer utility that is run from the server's
Utility Partition supports Zmodem, Xmodem, and Kermit protocols for binary file
transfer. Using the BIOS update utility accessible via Integrated RA, you can, if
necessary, upgrade the server's firmware. With this feature, an administrator can
upload new Flash files to the HP Utility Partition and remotely update the server's
BIOS.
SNMP support. HP provides SNMP agents that collect data, (including
environmental data), and log events. Integrated RA's support of SNMP queries and
traps provides seamless integration with any SNMP management platform
including HP TopTools and HP OpenView. These management solutions provide
in-band monitoring of your servers. Refer to the Server Management Reference
Guide that came with your server for more information about using these products.
Remote Diagnostics. The Integrated RA enables an administrator to remotely run
the HP DiagTools application via the HP Utility Partition.
Integrated RA System Requirements
The Integrated RA combines intelligent hardware and software that's built-in to
your HP NetServer. The separate on-board processor permits server access
independent of the server's operational status. In addition to the onboard hardware
and software features, to support remote management, Integrated RA requires:
•An external modem or direct connection via the Management Port. See HP
supported modems listed in Appendix B.

•An HP NetServer Navigator Utility Partition, or 32 MB of disk space
available in a bootable DOS Partition installed on the hard disk (required
for DOS file transfers, and running HP DiagTools diagnostic software).
•An HP NetServer Navigator CD-ROM Version L.18.20 or later. (Check the
version number printed on the CD-ROM opposite the HP logo.)
•Window NT and 2000 only: 16 MB of disk space for pcAnywhere.
NOTE HP recommends that you supply power to your external modem
via an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) so that you can
access Integrated RA in the event of a site power failure.
Supported Network Operating Systems
The following Network Operating Systems (NOS) are supported by Integrated
RA:
•Novell NetWare v3.12, v4.11, v4.2, and v5.1 (including SMP, excluding
SFT III)
•Microsoft Windows NT Server 4.0 and Windows 2000 Server
•IBM OS/2 2.1, 2.11 (SMP) and Warp version 3.0 and 4.0
•SCO UNIX System V Release 3.2 Operating System, version 4.2, SCO
Open Server/SCO Open Desktop Release 3.0, Open Server Release 5.0,
and SCO MPX Release 3.0
•Banyan Vines
NOTE SCO UNIX does not support a bootable HP NetServer
Navigator Utility Partition. Therefore you will have to create a
separate bootable DOS partition in order to run the HP
Diagnostic Assistant or the file transfer utility from a remote
client.

Remote Client Installation Requirements
For the remote client, you can use any ANSI X3.64 compatible terminal or
terminal emulator with a modem or RS-232 connection. For best results, use an
ANSI color terminal that supports 25-line mode and IBM PC character set, the
configuration supported by the pcAnywhere terminal software. Remote client
requirements for pcAnywhere include:
•A 486-based (or faster) computer with 16 MB of available disk space
•A communications link to the server, either through a modem or a direct
serial connection
•MS Windows 95, 98, 2000, or Windows NT Workstation 4.0

3 Integrated RA Setup and
Configuration
This chapter provides instructions for setting up your HP NetServer's Integrated
RA to enable remote management of the server. (See Chapter 4 for information on
installing Integrated RA software.) To install and configure Integrated RA you
must also either set up a modem or configure a direct (null modem) connection.
After you have configured the modem (or direct connection), you use the
Integrated RA Configuration Utility to set up remote access and event monitoring
Two distinct configurations are required:
•Server's BIOS setup configuration
•Integrated RA configuration
Once you've set up the Integrated RA features on your server, you must then install
the remote server software as described in Chapter 4.

Setting Up the Remote Connection
You first need to set up a remote connection that enables the server to
communicate with a remote client. There are three possible options for setting up
the server for remote connection.
You can connect the HP NetServer's Management Port to a remote:
•Client using an external modem
•Client directly, using a null modem
•Telnet client using a terminal server
Typically, all remote connections are routed through the HP NetServer's
Management Port, which is provided in addition to the usual Serial Ports A and B.
Regardless of the type of physical data link joining host and remote clients, you
must use the Integrated RA Configuration Utility to set up communications
between the devices. See "Configuring the Integrated RA" section later in this
chapter for more information on configuring communications.
Using an External Modem
You can communicate with a remote PC client by connecting an external modem
to the server's Management Port. A modem connection at the remote client is also
required to complete the data link.
Refer to Appendix B for a list of modems supported for use with Integrated RA.
The following figure illustrates this type of connection joining the server and the
remote client.

Using a Direct Serial Connection
Instead of setting up modem communications, you can use a null modem cable to
connect the server directly to a terminal through each computer's Management
Port. You can use this type of connection when you want to communicate with the
server through the Integrated RA at the same site as the server. The following
figure illustrates a direct connection between an Integrated RA installed in a server
and a stand-alone terminal.

Configuring a Null Modem Cable
In a direct connection, the null modem cable has key signals crossed to make the
terminal appear as if it were a modem. The figure below illustrates the cable
configuration required for making a direct connection to the Integrated RA.

It is possible to create a minimal three-wire direct connection using the cable
configuration illustrated in the following figure.
