1 Setting Up the HP Server
Setup Steps
This chapter provides a quick overview of the most efficient way to set up your
HP Tower Server tc2100. It is important to follow the setup steps in this chapter in
the exact order listed here, but skip any steps that do not apply to your situation.
References are provided to chapters within this guide or other Installation guides,
for more information about installation and upgrades of this HP Server.
Preparations
CAUTION The standard HP Server tc2100 weighs approximately 13.5
kg. (30 lbs) and 22.6 kg. (50 lbs) fully loaded, excluding a
keyboard and monitor. Use appropriate lifting precautions
when you move the Server.
1) Verify Contents Unpack the contents of the shipping box and locate the
ReadFirst sheet for a quick reference to installing the
HP Server tc2100. The ReadFirst sheet parallels this
chapter, but has the most up to date information
concerning installation.
Verify the contents of the shipping box (including the
installation kit) against the Contents list included with
your HP Server tc2100. If anything is missing or
damaged, call your reseller.
2) Save Packaging Store the empty boxes and packing material in a safe
place. This is especially important if you plan to ship
the HP Server tc2100 elsewhere for final installation.
3) Find the Installation Kit HP Server tc2100 Installation Kit
This kit contains the ReadFirst sheet, the Installation
Guides, and the HP Startup CD-ROM shipped with
each HP Server tc2100.

This document describes installation, hardware
upgrades, configuration, and troubleshooting of your
HP Server.

HP Server tc2100 NOS Installation Guide
This document describes installation of the various
supported NOSs, loading drivers, flashing BIOS, and
using HP DiagTools to verify your HP Server’s
integrity.
Installing the HP Server
5) If there are no options
to install, skip to Step 7.
If there are no optional HP accessories to install at this
time, (do not install third party options until you have
verified the HP Server’s operation) skip to Step 7.
6) Installing Options and
Accessories
Install the optional HP mass storage devices, memory
upgrades, or HP accessory boards at this time.
Installing Options
WARNING Before removing the cover, always disconnect the power cord
and unplug telephone cables. Disconnect the power cord to
avoid exposure to high energy levels that may cause burns
when parts are short-circuited by metal objects such as tools
or jewelry. Disconnect telephone cables to avoid exposure to
shock hazard from telephone ringing voltages.
The following upgrades (hard disk drives, memory (DIMMs),
and PCI boards) require removing the cover from the HP
Server tc2100. Ensure you disconnect power from the Server
before opening it. BE SURE to observe appropriate ESD
precautions when handling electronic components.
6a) If Installing Accessories, remove the
covers
• Installing options or upgrades in the
Server requires access to the internal
components of the Server, which
requires removing the covers.
• Refer to Chapter 3, "Opening and
Closing the HP Server."

6b) Add Mass Storage Devices
• Install optional hard disk drives or
other optional mass storage devices.
• Adding IDE or SCSI hard disk
drives depends on the model.
• For details refer to Chapter 4,
"Installing Mass Storage Devices."
6c) Add Memory (DIMMs)
• You can install more memory or
upgrade the existing memory. Use
only HP supported DIMMs.
• Supported DIMMs may be installed
in any combination, in any slot, but
HP recommends starting at slot 1
and filling the slots in order with the
largest size first: 1, 2, and 3.
• For details refer to Chapter 5,
"Installing Additional Memory."
6d) Add PCI Accessory Boards
• You can install additional accessory
boards, but don’t install third party
boards until you have verified the
Server’s operations.
• The addition of a disk drive
controller board not shipped with
the Server from the factory may
affect boot order and prevent you
from successfully verifying the
Server’s operation.
• For details refer to Chapter 6,
"Installing Additional Boards."

6e) Replacing the covers
• Ensure all cables are properly routed
and all components are fully seated,
before replacing the covers.
• For details refer to Chapter 3,
"Opening and Closing the HP
Server."

7) Check/Set the Power
Supply Input Voltage
• Check the input voltage switch on the power
supply located on the rear of the Server below
the power connector, as shown below.
• The input voltage switch has two positions: 115
or 230 volts – 230 volts is default position.

8) Connect Peripherals • Connect the keyboard, mouse, monitor, and
UPS to the Server.
• If you don’t use a UPS with the Server, you
may experience an arcing effect when you plug
in the power cord to the AC power source. This
is normal, due to the high inrush current of the
power supply.
• For details on connecting the keyboard, mouse,
monitor, and UPS, refer to Chapter 7,
"Connecting the Monitor, Keyboard, Mouse,
and UPS.”
9) Power up the HP Server • Verify the HP Server tc2100 passes POST
successfully.
• If the operating system was not loaded prior to
your receipt of the Server, you will see an error
message “No operating system found” when
the Server completes the boot process.
• Check the HP Server’s BIOS version against
the latest BIOS version listed on HP’s web site
for this Server at: http:\\ www.hp.com
• If you don’t have the latest BIOS version, you
will need to update the BIOS with the utility on
the Startup CD-ROM before installing the NOS
and its drivers.
10) Run the HP Startup
CD-ROM to create the
diskettes
• Run the HP Startup CD-ROM (NOS
drivers/DiagTools/BIOS upgrade) on any
Windows PC with an HTML browser to create
the required diskettes for the various utilities on
the Startup CD-ROM. These utilities are used
to flash the BIOS and install the NOS drivers.
• If the Windows PC does not auto-start the
Startup menu, start it by opening the
Startup.htm file, found at the root level of the
Startup CD.
• Refer to the Welcome menu on the Startup
CD-ROM, or the HP Server tc2100 NOS
Installation Guide for instructions.

11) Run DiagTools (Optional)
• To verify the HP Server’s hardware integrity
and ensure the Server is fully functional you
may boot the HP Server in DOS with the
Startup CD-ROM installed to run HP
DiagTools, and follow the screen instructions
to run the Basic Test.
• View and then save the Support Ticket, as this
will contain an inventory of your hardware.
• Refer to Chapter 8, "Configuring the HP
Server”, or the HP Server tc2100 NOS
Installation Guide for instructions.
12) If necessary, Flash the
BIOS
• If you need to flash the BIOS, do so now before
installing the NOS on the HP Server.
• To get the latest BIOS for the HP Server tc2100
download the most current BIOS from the HP
web site at: http:\\www.hp.com
• The Startup CD-ROM has a flash utility you
can use to upgrade the BIOS, or backup your
BIOS configuration, in case the CMOS
becomes corrupted later on.
• Refer to the HP Server tc2100 NOS Installation
Guide for more information.
13) Install the desired NOS • Locate and read the desired NOS installation
topic in the HP Server tc2100 NOS Installation
Guide before installing the desired NOS.
• The NOS Installation Guide provides the
instructions for installing all the supported
NOSs.
14) Install the respective NOS
drivers
• The NOS drivers are normally installed from
the diskettes you create, but the Startup CD-
ROM has a link you can use to automatically
install the NOS drivers for Windows NT Server
or Windows 2000 Server.
• Refer to the Welcome menu on the Startup
CD-ROM or the HP Server tc2100 NOS
Installation Guide for more information.

Introduction
Before operating the HP Tower Server tc2100, familiarize yourself with the HP
Server's controls, ports, and indicators, as shown in Figures 2-1 through 2-3.
Front Panel
The front panel of the HP Server tc2100 provides the controls and indicators
commonly used when operating the Server.

Sleep LED
This green LED indicator provides the power state of the
Server:
Steady green when the Server is operating normally.
Off when the Server is powered off.
Steady amber indicates the Server is in a sleep state and
under ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power
Management Interface) control.
Power On/Off/
Sleep Switch
This button turns the HP Server power On or Off, and if
available, also transitions the Server between Power On and
sleep states. If sleep states are not available, then this button
only turns power On or Off.
The sleep states are NOS dependent and not available if
your NOS does not support power management based on
the ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power
Management Interface) standard. Refer to "Applying
Power to the HP Server" and "Sleep States (ACPI)" later in
this chapter.
Drive Activity LED
Flickering orange LED during any IDE or SCSI device
activity, including the CD-ROM drive(s), IDE hard disk
drives, and SCSI devices connected to the SCSI controller
board.
Off when there is no IDE or SCSI device activity.
LAN Activity LED
Flickering green LED during any embedded LAN activity.
Off when there is no LAN activity.
Additional Front Panel Controls and Indicators
The input and storage devices provide additional front panel controls and
indicators, which give control and operational status of the respective device. The
specific controls and indicators depend on the type and model of the input and
storage devices used. The following controls and indicators are the typical ones
found on HP supplied devices.

installation information.
Rear View
The ports, connectors, switches and other related items at the rear of the Server are
listed below and shown in Figure 2-3.
• The power connector accepts a standard power cable to connect the
HP Server tc2100 with the site power source.
• The input voltage selector switch is used to adapt the power supply to the
input line voltage. The two switch settings are 115 volts or 230 volts, and 230
volts is the default setting.
• The mouse port accepts a standard mouse with a PS/2 connector.
• The keyboard port accepts a standard keyboard with a PS/2 connector.
• Two USB ports are provided for printers, external modems, a keyboard and a
mouse, but these features are NOS dependent.
• The COM 1 port is a standard serial port.
• The Parallel Port is a standard parallel port which supports Extended
Capabilities Port (ECP)/Enhanced Parallel Port (EPP).
• The Monitor Port interface specifications are listed in Table A-4, "HP Server
Hardware Specifications" and Table A-5, "Video Display Modes" of
Appendix A, "Specifications."
• The COM 2 port is a standard serial port.
• The SCSI model has an external SCSI port for external SCSI devices provided
by the single channel SCSI controller board, but can only be used when there
are no SCSI devices connected internally.
• Keylock mechanism provides mechanical security for the left side panel to
prevent access to the internal components.
• The LAN port is included as an embedded controller based on Intel's 82559
10/100 BaseT Fast Ethernet Controller. It has a RJ-45 LAN connector on the
rear panel. The LED on the front panel is used to indicate LAN activity.

• System Fan is a variable speed fan controlled by thermal sensors on the
system board. The system fan speed can be controlled by the fan speed
settings in the (BIOS) Setup Utility.

If you chose to use sleep states in conjunction with the HP Server tc2100, refer to
“Sleep States (ACPI)” later in this section and your respective NOS before
attempting to use sleep states.

Powering-Up the Server
NOTE Turn on power to the monitor connected to the HP Server
before you power-on the Server. This allows proper
auto-configuration of video output of the Server as it boots.
CAUTION To prevent damage to the power supply, check the Input
Voltage selector switch before connecting the Server and its
power cord to a voltage source.
1. Ensure the Input Voltage selector switch is set for the correct input voltage,
before connecting the power cord to a voltage source. See Figure 2-4.

2. Ensure the HP Server's power cord is connected to the power source. See
Figure 2-4.
3. Press the Power button on the lower front bezel. See Figure 2-1.
When you press the power button on the front bezel, the Server powers up and
loads the operating system. The system runs a set of Power On Self Tests
(POST) during this process. For details refer to Chapter 8, "Configuring the
HP Server" and Chapter 9, "Troubleshooting."

Powering-Down the Server
1. Log off all users and, if necessary, back up files.
oSchedule the power down for a time when the Server’s down time will
affect the fewest users.
oIf you will be doing any kind of hardware or software upgrade, ensure the
Server's data has been backed up.
oFollow instructions in your network operating system (NOS)
documentation to gracefully shut down all networking software and
applications.
WARNING The power supply will continue to provide standby current to
the Server until the power cord is disconnected from the rear
panel.
2. Press the Power switch on the HP Server's control panel when prompted by
the operating system.
Normally this completes the power-down procedure.
Connecting AC Power to Multiple-Server Configurations
The HP Server temporarily draws a large "inrush current," when first connected to
an AC power source. This also occurs when the Server is in a standby mode
(power is turned off, but the power cord is plugged into AC power). The inrush
current is much greater than the Server's normal operating current and generally,
the AC power source can handle the normal inrush current.
However, if you install several HP Servers on one circuit, precautions are
necessary. If there is a power failure and power is then restored, all the servers
immediately begin to draw inrush current at the same time. If the circuit breakers
on the incoming power line have insufficient capability, the breaker may trip and
thus prevent the servers from powering up.
When preparing your site for installation, allow for the additional inrush current.
Refer to Table A-1, "Power Supply Specifications" in Appendix A.
Sleep States (ACPI)
The HP Server supports the ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface)
standard, which is a key component of a NOS's directed power management. The
supported features are only available when an ACPI-compliant NOS is installed on

the Server. The term "sleep state" refers to any of several reduced power
consumption states in which normal NOS activity has ceased.
The Server supports several sleep states. One of these is a “standby” or “suspend”
sleep state, which has a short wake-up time. In this sleep state the Server appears
to be off – the monitor appears blank and there is no CD-ROM, internal hard drive
activity (IDE or SCSI), however, the power LED is a steady orange and the system
fan continues to operate.
The Server also may support another sleep state with a slower wake-up time,
sometimes referred to as “hibernate” by various operating systems. In this sleep
state, the Server appears to be off as described earlier, but the system fan and the
front panel power LED are also turned off. The unique feature of this sleep state
(and the reason for its slower wake-up time) is that information about the Server’s
NOS state (open applications, screens, and so on) is saved to disk before the
Server is placed in the sleep state. Upon wake-up, this information is restored from
disk. This method of restoring the Server's operation is much faster than a
complete rebooting of the Server. It still requires running all the start-up self-tests
before starting the NOS, but loading the NOS and all the previously opened
applications is much faster.
The Server supports certain types of system activity, which is used as wake-up
events from these sleep states. These wake-up events can be generated from the
power button, keyboard or mouse activity, and scheduled events.
NOTE The HP Server’s power management policies (transitions
between various power states) and the user options are specific
to the particular ACPI-compliant NOS installed on the Server.
If your NOS is ACPI-compliant, refer to the (BIOS) Setup
Utility and the power management features provided in the
NOS instructions for more information.
The HP Server’s power button can be configured to initiate a graceful shutdown or
"soft off" of the NOS rather than an immediate shutdown of the power supply. The
power button configurations are dependent on the user interface provided by the
ACPI-compliant NOS. While power management is under the control of the
ACPI-compliant NOS, the HP Server’s power button is capable of an override in
case of a non-responsive NOS.
NOTE The HP Server power button will force a power down without
waiting for the NOS to gracefully shut down the Server, if the
power button is pressed and held for more than four seconds.
