This chapter will help you learn how to do the following with your signal generator:
l create an FM signal
l generate step and list sweeps
l use the save and recall functions
l set up a digital modulation in GSM format (Option UN8 only>

The Signal Generator at a Glance
Refer to the figure and descriptions below as you use the procedures in this chapter. For
detailed front and rear panel information, refer to Chapter 2, “Exploring the User Interface.”

Active Entry Area.The currentactivefunction is

Annunciators. Thesedisplayannunciators show

Frequency Area.The current CWfrequency is

Menu Keys. These hardkeysprovideaccessto the

RF Output Connector. ThisfemaleType-N
connector isthe output connectorfor RFsignals.
Numeric Keypad. The numerickeypadconsistsof
digit, decimal point, and backspacekeys.The
backspacekeycanalsobe usedto change the sign
of a numeric value.
Arrow Keys.The up and downarrowkeysincrease
or decrease numericvalues.The left and right
arrow keysmove the cursor,
Standby LED. ThisyellowLEDlightswhen the
instrument is instandbymode.
Line Power LED. Thisgreen LEDlightswhen
power iscycledon.
Power Switch. Pressingthishardkeytoggles the
power between on and standby.

Creating an FM Signal
This procedure will show you how to configure the signal generator to output a
frequency-modulated signal with the following characteristics:
l carrier frequency set to 104.9 MHz
l power level set to 0 dBm
l FM deviation set to 75 kHz
l FM rate set to 10 kHz
Setting the Carrier Frequency
1. Press Preset. Thissetsthe signalgeneratorto itsfactory-definedinstrument
state.
2. Press Frequency. Frequencybecomes the activefunctionand the presetvalue for
frequency isdisplayedinthe activeentry area.
3. Enter 104.9 using the numeric The newcarrierfrequency(10 4 .9 00 000 00 MHZ) is

Setting the Power Level
1. Press Amplitude. Amplitudebecomes the activefunctionandthe presetvalue for

Setting the FM Deviation
1. Press FMQM.
2. Press the FM Dev softkey.
3. Enter 75 using the numeric
keypad and press the kHz
softkey.
Thefirstlevelmenu of FMsoftkeysisdisplayed.
FMdeviationbecomesthe activefunction and the preset value
for FMdeviationisdisplayedinthe activeentry area.
The new FMdeviationisdisplayedbelow the FM Dev softkey.
Youshouldsee 75 . 0000 kHz inthe second line of the
softkeylabel.
Setting the FM Rate
1. Press the FM Rate softkey. FMratebecomesthe activefunction and the preset value for FM
rate isdisplayedinthe activeentry area.
2. Enter 10 using the numeric The new FMrate isdisplayedbelowthe

Turning On Frequency Modulation
The signal generator is now configured to output a 0 dBm, frequency-modulated carrier at
104.9 MHz with the FM deviation set to 75 kHz and the FM rate set to 10 kHz. The shape of
the waveform is a sinewave.
NOTE Sine is the default selection for the FM Waveform softkey. Press More (1 of 2) to see
the softkey.
Follow these remaining steps to output the frequency-modulated signal:
1. Press the FM Off On softkey. FMtogglesfrom Off to
On. Notice,also,that the FM display
annunciatoristurned on, indicatingthat you have enabled
frequencymodulation.
2. Press RF On/Off.
Noticethatthe displayannunciator changes from RF OFF to
RF ON.The modulatedsignalisnow availableat the
RFOUTPUTconnector.
