1 Introduction
Thischapterdescribesthe packagecontentsand providesalist offeaturesand
application illustrationsof theADSLWireless Router.
1.1AbouttheADSL WirelessRouter
DSL(DigitalSubscriberLine)referstoatechnologyused toincreasethe datacapacity
of standardtwisted-pairwiresthat aregenerallyusedtoconnect mosthouseholdsto
the phonenetwork. Inaddition, thistechnologyallowssimultaneousvoiceand
high-speeddatatransmission overasinglepairoftelephonewires.
ThereareseveralkindsofDSLservices, eachwithitsowncompromisesbetween
speed,distance, cost, and reliability.Theseservicesareeithersymmetrical(data
flowsatthe samespeed inbothdirections), orasymmetrical(the downstream
capacityishigherthan theupstreamcapacity).
ADSL
AsymmetricDigitalSubscriberLine (ADSL),asitsnameindicates,isan asymmetrical
datatransmission technologywhichprovideshigh-speeddatatransferoverexisting
telephone orISDN linesbymaking gooduseofthe previouslyunused high-frequency
band-width.ADSLprovidesmuchhigherdownstreamspeed than upstreamspeed. It
ismuchpopularasordinaryusersdownloadmuchmoredatathan what theyupload.
ADSLprovidesadedicatedsecurecommunication between you and the ISP(Internet
ServiceProvider) and theconnectionishigh-speed and always-on.
Ethernet/ FastEthernet/ USB
Ethernet isthe most widely-usednetworkaccess method, especiallyinaLocalArea
Network(LAN)and isdefinedbythe IEEE 802.3standard. Normally, Ethernet isa
shared mediaLAN.All stationsonthesegmentsharethetotalbandwidth, whichcould
be 10Mbps(Ethernet), 100Mbps(Fast Ethernet), or1000Mbps(Gigabit Ethernet).
WithaswitchedEthernet, eachsenderandreceiverhasthefull bandwidth.
Fast Ethernet isdefined asIEEE 802.3u standard, ahigh-speedversion of Ethernet
with100Mbpstransmission rate.
USB (UniversalSerialBus)isadatacommunicationstandardwhichallowsthe
PC/desktoptodetectnewdevicessuchasprinters, joysticks, keyboards, mice,
adapters, storagedevices,audiodevices,digitalcamerasand thingswiththis
technology.Theadvantage of USB istoreplacedifferent typesofserialandparallel
port connectorswithonestandardized plug and portcombination withthe data
transferrateupto12Mbps.Alsolow-powerdevicescan drawpowerfromUSB and
dont requirean extraadapter. Beforeyou usethisconnector, you mayneed toinstall
the USB driverfirst.
Wireless LAN
Wireless LocalArea Networksystems(WLANs)transmitand receivedataoverthe air
byusing radiofrequency (RF).Thisofferssomeadvantageslikemobility, easeof
installation, andscalabilityovertraditionalwired systems.

Mobility: WLANscombine dataconnectivitywithusermobility.Thisprovidesusers

Scalability:WLANtopologiesareeasy tochangeinvariousways frompeer-to-peer

Wireless LANissuitablefordifficult-to-wireand frequentlychangingenvironments.Its

temporaryLANwhennecessary
Wireless LANscan be setas “Ad-hoc”networkand “Infrastructure”network. Unlike
the “Ad-hocnetwork”, whereuserson theLANsenddatadirectlytoeachother, the
“Infrastructure”networkincludesanaccess pointanduserson the “Infrastructure”
networksenddatatothat dedicatedaccess point.ADSLWireless Routeruses
“Infrastructure”networkasWireless LANs. Eachwireless LANPCwithintherangeof
the access point can communicatewithotherwireless LANPCswithinthe range.
Firewall
DoS isan abbreviation forDenialofService.Thisoccurswhen acomputerornetwork
isoverwhelmed tothepoint that it can no longerfunction normally. Forexample,a
hackermayusefakeIPaddressestoaccumulatenumbersconnectionsinordersto
floodthe serverhe wantstoattack.The wayTCPworks isthataSYNpacketissentto
the serverfromthe client.Afterthe serverreceivesthe SYNpacket, aSYN-ACKis
sent back toclient. Theserverwill then waitforthereplyfromthe SYN-ACK. Ifthe
hackersenthundredsorthousandsofSYNpacketstothe serverwithbogusIP
addresses, the serverallocatescomputerandmemoryresourcestoestablishing a
connectionsincethe serverdoesnot knowalegitimateSYNmessage fromabogus
message. Byfloodingtheserverwithalarge volumeofrequests, the servers
maximumcapacitycan be used bythesebogusanduseless connection attempts
SPI isan acronymforStatefulPacket Inspection.TheSPIengineexaminesnot just
the headersofthepacket,butalsothepacket content. It can thendetermine more
about the packet than just itssourceanddestinationinformation. Moreover, stateful
inspection firewallsalsocloseoffportsuntil aconnection tothespecificport is
requested.

tocheck,and ifnecessary, install TCP/IPontoyourPCs.
Step1 Click the “Start”button. Choose “Settings”, then “ControlPanel”. Double-click the

the serverPCsorprinterswhichareconsistentlyaccessed bymultipleusers.Toset
up computerswithfixed IPAddresses, gotothe “IPAddress”tab of the “TCP/IP
Properties”windowasshownabove.
Step1 Select “SpecifyanIPaddress”and enter “192.168.1.xxx”inthe “IPAddress”
location (wherexxx isanumberbetween 2and254 used bythe High-Performance
Wireless Routertoidentifyeachcomputer), and the default “SubnetMask”
255.255.255.0”. Notethatnotwocomputerson thesameLANcanhavethesameIP
address.

Step2 Click on the “DNSConfiguration”tab andselect “Enable DNS”.Enterthe “DNSIP
