Check the equipmentupon arrivalfordamage orshortagesand reportsametoourOfficeorAgentbefore
starting.
Position the Softenerand Brine Tankon afirmfoundation,preferablyconcrete,withsufficientspacefor
operation and maintenance.
STEP 1Makesurethe softenertankisemptyand clean. Removebrine tanklidand removeresinand
controlvalve.
STEP 2Install the distributortube inthe softenertank,check the heightinrelation totop ofsoftener
tank. (Approximately25mm abovethe top ofthe tank).
STEP 3Placeaplasticcap overthe end of the distributorpipe.Aclean rag orplasticbag will sufficeif
plasticcap isnot available- NO mediamust enterdistributorpipe.
STEP 4Placeawithmouthfunnelinthe mouthofthe tankand load the resinand fill withwaterto
within50mm ofthe top.The resin mustnot be allowed tobe spilled on the floorasitisvery
slippery and dangeroustowalkon.
STEP 5Clean top ofneck and threadsofall tracesofresin.Removethe plasticcap fitted inStep 3
taking carenot toraisethe distributorpipe. NEVER shorten the lengthofthe distributorpipe.
STEP 6Unpack controlvalve,check thattank‘O’ring isinplace.Screwintop strainerif notfitted.Fit
controlvalvetosoftenertank, screwdownhand tight. Attachbypass valveifsupplied and then
thread adaptornutsand pipe piecewiththe sealing gasket.
STEP 7Connect inlet, outlet pipesand drainline tocontrolvalveasperInstruction Booklet.
STEP 8Removelidfrombrine tank,connectbrine tube fromaircheck assemblyon controlvalve,to
brine risertube inbrine tank. Then connect brine overflowdrainline towastetrap.
STEP 9RefertoInstruction booklet forstart up procedure(page 23 "placing conditionerintoService")
STEP 10 Load twobagsof25kghigh puritywatersoftenersalt intobrine tankand replacelid.
STEP 11 Topreventthe brine tankoverflowing itwill be necessary tomaintainthe salt levelinthe tank
tothat ofthe initialfill and replenishthe salt aftertworegenerationswithone bag ofsalt.

Forafull understandingofyourwatersoftenerweadvise thattheinstructionmanual
providedwiththesoftenershouldbefullyread.
Afterthe watersoftenerhasbeen fullyinstalled withthe correctamountofsaltplaced inthe
brine cabinetorexternalbrine tankitwill be necessarytoprogramintothe 960
microprocessor,twofunctionstosuitlocalconditions.It will be necessarytoknowthe
‘hardness”ofthe watertobe softened.If the watersupplyisfromamunicipalsupplythe
hardness can be obtained fromthe local“waterauthority”.If the watersupplyisfromabore
ornon-municipalsupplythen the totalhardness wouldbe found fromthe wateranalysis
carried out when the softenerwasrecommended.
•The following will havetobe programmed intothe control

•Pushlead end intosocket underneaththe front of the valveon left hand side corner
•Check thatthe frontdialcamshaft position indicator(whiteline mark)ispointing to

If not, turnpoweron at mains. The displaywill light up as“Err3”and the electricmotor
will automaticallydrivethe dialand camaround tothe regeneration completeposition.
Whatisnowshowninthe DISPLAY isan alternating “TIMEOFDAY“and “CAPACITY”
asindicated byagreen light highlighting the relevant setting.

bottomnumberinthe right hand corner, under“KG OFSALT”heading.
•Press the òbutton to“CAPACITY”takenoteofthe figuredisplayed againrefertotable
2and the displayed numbershouldcorrespond tothe numberatthe bottomnumber
under“KILGRAMSOFHARDNESS CAPACITY”.
Pleasenote:When the displaygoesback toalternating the green lightbetween “TIMEOF
DAY”and “CAPACITY”thatthe capacitydisplayNOW will be different towhat hasjust been
checked,whatisnowdisplayed isthe volumeofwaterthatthe softenerwill pass in“CUBIC
METRES”beforeregenerating.However,when using the ñò buttonstocheck thissetting
the microprocessorwill displaythe “EXCHANGEHARNESS CAPACITYOFTHE
SOFTENER”and thiscan be modified if required, see the manualforfull details.

Itisrecommendedthatthesoftenerbenowgivenaregenerationsoas topre-clean
theresinbed. Beforethisisdoneproceedas follows:
•Turnpoweroff
•Makesureinlet watertosoftenervalveis“OFF”, outlet valve“OFF”and bypass open
•Verifythatdrainline isfitted and thatthereisan “AIRGAP”between the drainpipe and
wastehole.
•Remove“VALVE COVER”bypushing the tab,(atrearofthe coveratthe left hand back
corner) backwards
•The valvecamshaft isnowevident
Slowlyturnthe camshaft anti-clockwisesothatthe lasttwocams(atthe faremd)are
justriding on the twonarrowbrass endsarenowpushed overtothe righthand side.
The valveisnowinthe “BACKWASHPOSITION”
•Slowlyopen the mainsinletvalve.Donotopen fully,justenough thatairand waterwill
be discharged atthe drain.When no moreairisbeing expelled along withthe water,
closeoff the mainswaterinlet valve.
•Slowlyturnthe camshaft anti-clockwisetill the whiteline inthe round windowcomes
around tothe “REFILL”position.
•Turnon the “POWER”.The displaywill show‘Err3”and the controlwill advancethe
camshaft byitselfaround tothe “REGENERATIONCOMPLETE”position (thismaytake
up to5minutes)and the “Err3”being displayed will then revertback tothe “TIMEOF
DAY”/”CAPACITY”green light alternating.
•Oncethe displaygreen light isalternating
Pour10-12 litresofwaterintothe brine tankorcabinet. Thisisan initialamountof
waterutilised forthe first regeneration.
Open mainswaterinlet valve
Press the large “REGENERATION”button and holdforapproximatelytwoseconds
The green lightwill nowbe against“REGENTIMEREMAINING”whichisthe time
thatthe softenerisinthe regeneration mode and will decreasetill the softener
completesthe regeration.During thistimethe controlsgreen lightwill alternate
between “TIMEOFDAY”and “REGENTIMEREMAINING”.

The softenerwill regenerateand the windowdisplaywill then be atthe “REGENERATION
COMPLETE”position.During the process the brine tankorcabinetwill be refilled withthe
correct amount of waternecessarytodissolvethe salt required.
•Open the outletmainsvalveand closeoff the bypass valveand check the treated water
atatap for“HARDNESS”using the Yes/Notabletsprovided.Note:run the waterfora
fewminutestodisplacethe initialuntreated waterremaining inthe pipeline.

Introduction
The Model960 Controlprovidessophisticated,
demand-based waterconditioning byincorporating a
microprocessorand awatermetertoelectronically
monitorthe amount ofwaterused daily. Eachday, at
TimeofRegeneration, the controldetermine ifthe
capacityremaining issufficient toprovide conditioned
Waterforthe next day. Ifthe remaining capacityis
too small, the controlautomaticallyregeneratesthe
resinbed.
Ifwaterusage changes, the computerautomatically
compensatesforthe change and regeneratesas
needed. Regeneration based on actualwaterusage.
The controlprovidesefficient, trouble-free, uninter-
rupted soft waterluxury.
The Series255 valvecombinesdesign simplicitywith
glass reinforced NORYL* plasticconstruction to
provide an uncommonlyreliableappliance.
Ifmaintenancebecomesnecessary, the Model960
Series255 waterConditionerSystemofferaunique
"separation"capabilityforquick repairs.

Special Features
•Memory Retention. During apoweroutage,
criticaloperating information inthe control's
memory isstored inaspecialelectronicdevice
called aNOVARAM. Thisinformation includesthe
timeofday, waterusage amounts, dailyaverage
waterusage, all programming dataand the
numberofdayssincethe last regeneration. When
powerisrestored, the information isre-turned to
the microprocessorand operation resumesasif
an outage neveroccurred. The timeofdaywill be
latebythe lengthofthe poweroutage. Because
most poweroutagesareless than one minutein
duration, it maybe monthsoryearsbeforethe
timedisplayrequiresresetting. Ifan outage ofone
ormorehoursoccurs, the timeofdayshouldbe
reset but no otherreprogramming isnecessary.
•Design Reliability. Solid-stateelectronicsassure
manyyearsoftrouble-free performance. The
metering systemhasonlyone moving part; a
rotating turbine that measureswaterusage.
•Time and CapacityDisplay. During normal
conditioning operation, the correct timeofday
alternateswithcapacityon the display. The
capacityvalue isthe numberofgallons(cubic
metersofmetricunits)ofwaterthat the unit can
condition beforeanotherregeneration isneeded.
•Flow indicator. The colon between the hoursand
the minutesinthe TimeofDaydisplayflashesto
indicatethe flowofservicewaterthrough the
valve. Thisprovidesan easydetermination of
propermeteroperation.
•Hardness and CapacitySettings. Oncethe
hardness and capacitysettingsareentered, the
information cannot be lost due toapoweroutage,
soreprogramming isnot necessary.
•GuestCycle. Anextraregeneration can be
achieved at anytimebypressing the REGEN
button on the front panel. It takesafewminutes
forthe regeneration tostart. The unit completes
the regeneration inabout twohours. Thisfeature
isbeneficialwhen you expect tousemorethan
the normalamount ofwater; forexample, guest
visitsoran extraheavylaundry day.
General ConditionerInformation
How you'reConditionerWorks
Ingeneral, yourwaterconditionerworksinthe follow-
ing manner. Hardwaterflowsintothe conditionerand
through the resinbed wherecalciumand magnesium
hardness mineralsareexchange. The conditioned
waterflowsout ofthe resinbed intoyourplumbing
system. Afteracertainamount ofhardwaterhas
passed through the conditioner, the resincannot
removeanymoreminerals. Thisresinstateiscalled
exhaustion and indicatesthat the resinneedstobe
regenerated. The regeneration process restoresthe
conditioner'sabilitytosoften water. The control
monitorsthe amount ofwaterthat flowsthrough the
conditionerand automaticallycalculateswhen to
regeneratethe resinbed.

position, whichisthe position least vulnerableto
plugging.

Installation
All plumbing and electricalconnectionsmust conform
tolocalcodes. Inspect the unit carefullyforcarrier
shortage orshipping damage.
LocationSelection
•Locateunit asclosetoadrainaspossible
•Ifsupplementary watertreating equipment is
required, makesurethat adequateadditional
spaceisavailable. Locatethe brine tankinan
accessibleplacesothat salt can easilybe added.
•Do not install anyunit closerthan 10ft (3m)of
piping between the outlet ofthe waterconditioner
and the inlet ofthe waterheater. Waterheaters
can transmit heat back downthe coldwaterpipe
intothe controlvalve. Hot watercan severely
damage the controller.
A10ft (3m)totalpipe run (including bends, elbows
etc) isareasonabledistancetoprevent hot water
damage. Apositivewaytoprevent hot waterfrom
flowing fromaheat sourcetothe conditioneristo
install acheck valveinthe soft waterpiping fromthe
conditioner. Ifacheck valveisinstalled, makesure
that the water-heating unit isequipped withaproperly
rated temperatureand pressuresafetyreliefvalve.
Alwaysconformtolocalcodes.
•Do not locatethe unit inan area wherethe temp
everfallsbelow34ºF (1ºC)orover120ºF (49ºC).
•Do not install the unit nearacidoracidfumes.
•Do not exposethe unit topetroleumproducts.
WaterLineConnection
Abypass valvesystemmust be installed toprovide
foroccasionswhen the waterconditionermust isby-
passed forhardwaterorforservicing. The most
common bypass systemsarethe AutotrolSeries156
Bypass Valve, Figure3, and plumbed-inglobe
valves, Figure4. Though botharesimilarinfunction,
the AutotrolBypass offerssimplicityand easeof
operation.
DrainLineConnection
The ideallocation forthe unit isaboveand not more
than 20ft (6.1m)fromthe drain. Forsuchinstallations,
using the appropriateadaptorfitting (not supplied),
connect 1/2in(1.3cm)plastictubing tothe drainline
connection located at the rearofthe control.
Ifthe unit islocated morethan 20ft (6.1m)fromthe
drain, use3/4in(1.9cm)tubing forrunsup to40ft
(12.2m). You mayelevatethe line up to6ft (1.8m)
providing the run doesnot exceed 15ft (4.6m)and the
waterpressureat the conditionerisnot less than
40psi(280kPa). You mayelevatean additional2ft
(61cm)foreachadditional10psi(70kPa)ofwater
pressure.
When the drainline iselevated and emptiesintoa
drainwhichisbelowthe levelofthe controlvalve,

indicatethat the conditionerisregenerating the
resinbed and onlyhardwaterisavailable.
•Four-DigitDisplay. The four-digit red LED
displayshowssysteminformation suchastimeof
day, gallonsofconditioned wateravailable, time
the conditionerwill regenerate, oranyerror
alarms
•Green indicatorlights. The green indicator
lightsarelocated at the right ofthe controlpanel.

DAY and CAPACITYand the corresponding green
lightsalternatebetween thesecontrollegends.
•Programmed Push Buttons. The programming
buttonsarelocated at the bottomofthe panel
underthe display. Usethe buttonstolookat or
change the conditionersettings.
•REGENPush Button. The REGENbutton is
located at the bottomofthe panelbelowthe six
indicatorlights. Press the button tostart a
regeneration ofthe waterconditioner.
Note: Ifyou press the button againaminuteormore
afteraregeneration begins, asecond regeneration
will start when the first regeneration iscompleted. The
displayfreezeswiththe REGENTIME REMAINING
information. Afterthe first regeneration iscompleted,
the second regeneration beginsimmediately. The
displaywill alternatebetween the TIME OF DAY and
REGENTIME REMAINING.
Control Settings
General Information
Usethe fourprogramming pushbuttonstochange
anyofthe controlsettings. Settingscan onlybe
changed ifthe regeneration cycleindicatorispointing
at REGEN-ERATIONCOMPLETE. Ifyou try to
change the setting when the cycleindicatorisinany
otherposition orifthe setting isnot valid, the control
beepstolet you knowthat the newsetting hasbeen
ignored.
To changeasetting: Press the downarrow òbutton
until the green light isilluminated next tothe control
setting you want tochange. That controlsetting value
showson the display. Press the SET button and the
farright numberon the displaystartsflashing. Ifyou
want tochange the number, press the up arrow ñ
button toincreasethe numberorthe downarrow ò
button todecreasethe number. Toskipthe number
without changing, press the left arrow ïbutton.
Note: Ifyou press and holdeitherthe up arrow ñbut-
ton orthe downarrow òbutton formorethan 1
second, the flashing numberwill scroll up ordown.
When the numberiscorrect, press the left arrow ï
button. The first numberstopsflashing and the next
numberstartsflashing. You can onlychange the
flashing number. Continue changing numbersuntil
you reachthe desired setting. Press the SET button.

TimeofDayClock
The Controlusesthe TimeofDayClock and the
amount ofconditioned waterremaining todecide
when tobeginaregeneration. When aregeneration is
necessary and the TimeofDayClock isat the same
timeasthe TimeofRegeneration setting, the control
startsthe regeneration.

shouldnot causeaproblem. Ifthe outage isseveral
hours, the controlwill regenerateat the wrong timeof
day. All othermemory isstored inthe NOVRAM and
maintained during poweroutage. Refertopage3.
TimeofRegeneration
The controlusesthe TimeofRegeneration todecide
when tobeginaregeneration. When aregeneration is
necessary and the TimeofDayClock isat the same
timeasthe TimeofRegeneration setting, the control
startsthe regeneration. The factory setting forTimeof
Regeneration is2:00 AM. Ifthistimeisinconvenient,
you can select anyothertimeofday. Rememberthat
the soft waterisnot availableduring aregeneration of
the waterconditioner. TimeofRegeneration can be
set foranytime, AM orPM.
Note: The controlmaybe programmed foran immed-
iateregeneration option. Inthiscase, the controldoes
not wait forthe TimeofRegeneration but regenerates
when the remaining capacityreacheszero. Contact
yourdealerformoreinformation regarding thisoption.

Hardness Setting
The Hardness Setting referstothe amount ofhard-
ness mineralsinyourwaterbeforeit isconditioned.
The controlusesthissetting tocalculatehowmany
gallonsofwatercan be conditioned beforea
regeneration isnecessary.
Yourwatertreatment dealertested the waterat the
timeofinstallation and entered aHardness Setting in
the control. Werecommend that you consult your
dealerorhaveyourwaterretested beforechanging
thissetting
You can see the Hardness Setting the dealerentered
bypressing the downarrow òbutton until the green
light next tothe HARDNESS legend ison. The
numberon the displayisthe measureofwater
hardness ingrainspergallon (milligramsperlitrefor
metric).
Completethe following stepstochange the Hardness
Setting:
1.Press the downarrow òbutton until the green

setting range is(30 TO 2500 milligrams/litrefor

SaltSetting
The Salt Setting referstothe totalamount ofsalt, in
pounds, that the controlusesduring aregeneration of
the resinbed. The amount ofsalt used inaregenera-
tion determinesthe amount ofwaterthat the condi-
tionersoftensbetween regenerations. Ifthissetting is
changed, it maybe necessary tochange the Capacity
Setting aswell. RefertoTable2 forSALT and
CAPAC-ITYinformation.
Completethe following stepstochange the Hardness
Setting:
1.Press the downarrow òbutton until the green
light next tothe SALT legend ison. The display
showsanumberwithazeroorafivetothe right
ofthe decimalpoint. No othernumbercan be
entered inthisposition. The setting range is(0.1
to25.5kilogramsformetric).
2.Press the SET button and the minutenumberon
the displaystartsflashing. Ifyou want tochange
thisnumber, press the up ñbutton toincrease
the numberorthe downarrow òbutton to
decreasethe number.
Toskipthe numberwithout changing, press the
