1.1 Unpacking instructions
Taketheembosserupfromthebox. Removethetwoprint-headtransportlocking,redcoloured
plastics,placedinsidethesheetfeeder.Savethetransportationmaterial.
Note!Whenshipping,pleaserememberthattheembosserisadelicateunit. Itisthereforemost
importanttoreplacetheprintingheadlockers,andusetheoriginalpacking!
Beforeinstallingtheembossermakesurethatthereisnovisibledamagetotheembosserandthatthe
deliveryiscomplete. Ifyouencounteranyproblems,pleasecontactyourdealerimmediately.

2.1 How to start up

A)Therightsidemarginguideisfixedtothefarmostrightposition.
B)Openthesheetfeederwiththeleverontheleftside.
Loadthepaperandadjusttheleftsidepaperguideuntilittouchthepaperandlockitproperly.
Maximumpaperwidththatcanbehandledbythesheetfeederis297mm.Ifanarrowpaperisused,
onlytheleftmarginguidedshouldbeadjustedaccordinglyandproperlylockedinthatposition.
NOTE!Neverchangethepositionoftherightsidemarginguideonthe4X4PRO!
C)Whenloadingthesheetfeeder,makesureitisnotoverfilled.Forthebestpossiblefunctionitis
necessarytoleave1-2mmfreespacebetweenthepick-uprollersandthepaperstackbeforeclosing
thesheetfeeder.
D)Setthetwopapersupportsatthemarginsofthepaper.
E)Selectcardorsheetmodeonthesheetfeeder.Cardmodeisnormallyforpaperof120-200gsm.,
andsheetmodeforpaperbelowthisweight.Makesurethatthecard/sheetselectorsissettothesame
positiononbothsideofthepaper.

Foradetaileddescriptionofsheetfeederadjustment,differentpaperqualities,sheetfeedermaintenance
andfaultinpaperhandlingseechapter9.
2.2 Paper settings
2.2.1 Page length setting
Ondeliverythedefaultpaperlengthis420mm.
Tochangethedefaultpaperlength,double-clicktheFORMFEEDkey.Theprinterwillechothe
measuredvalueofthepaperlengthinmm.Smalleradjustmentsofthepaperlengthvaluecanbedone
fromsetup.
Ifyouuseapapertypedifferentfromthepaperthatwasdeliveredwiththeprinter,theprintermayneed
tocalibratethepapersensorinordertoacceptthenewtypeofpaper.
Forinstructions,see6.4.7 -Papersensorcalibration.
2.2.2. Pre-folding line position
TurntheprinterON.Pressthe"1"or"10"keyonceandthentheSETUPkey.Apaperwillbefedintothe
printer,whereapre-foldinglineareprinted.Checkthepositionofthelinebyfoldingthepaperand
makesurethattheedgesmatcheseachother.
Ifthepre-foldinglineisnotatthecorrectposition,e.g.thefirstprintedpageiswiderthenthesecond,
thenthevalueistohigh.Decreasethevaluebyusingthe1and10keysinthecopyfeatures.Theupper
key“1”increases1(+1)andthelowerkey“10”decreases1(-1)foreachkeystroke.Whenyou
reachedthematchingvalue,pressSETUPtostoreitintheprintermemory.(Ifthefirstprintedpageis
morenarrowthenthesecond,thenthevalueistolowandmustbeincreased.)Whenyoupressthe1
and10keysnow,thespokenvaluewillbeinnumberofmotorsteps. Decreaseite.g.5stepsandthen
presstheSetupkeytomakeanewtestprintout.Checkthepositionofthelinebyfoldingthepaperand
makesurethattheedgesmatcheseachother.
Whenthepre-foldinglineiscorrect,theprinterisreadyforuse.

PagewidthissetupfromcontrolpanelSETUP/PAGELAYOUT/PAGEWIDTH,changepaperwidthusing
thekeys“1”and“10”.Eachkeypresswilladdoneortentothecurrentvalueofpaperwidthuntil
maximumpagewidthisreached,thenitstartsfromminimumpagewidthagain.
Alsoseechapter5forfurtherinformationaboutchangesinthesetup.
2.3 Paper support position
Thepapersupportsareusedtokeepthepaperstraightinthepapermagazineinordertoavoidmultiple
feeds.
Onthetopofthesheetfeeder,thereisaslotforthepapersupports.Placethepapersupportsinto
positionandpressthemdownintotheslotsotheyareproperlyfixedandpositionedattothemarginsof
paper.
2.4 Document guide position
Ontheloweredgeofthefrontpanelcoveraretwoplasticdocumentguides. Thecorrectpositionfor
theseistobelinedupwiththemarginguidesfollowingthesideedgesofthesheet,inordertoliftthe
papertothecorrectpositioninthedocumentstack,howeveritmayvaryondifferentpaperqualities.
2.5 Computer connection
ConnectIndex4X4PROtothecomputerwiththeSerialorCentronicsinterface. Whenturningonthe
4X4PRO,bothportsarereadytoreceiveinformation.
2.5.1 Serial communication cable
4X4PROisequippedwitha9pinfemale(D-sub)ontheserialinterface,andastandard
CentronicsconnectorfortheCentronicsinterface.
SerialPinconfiguration:
2=RXDIN,3=TXDOUT,4=DTROUT,5=GND,6=DSRIN,7=RTSOUT,8=CTSIN.
Transmittingparameters(factorysetting)are:
BAUDRATE=9600,DATABITS=8,PARITY=N,STOPBITS=1,HANDSHAKE=DTRHARDWAREHANDSHAKE.
2.5.2 Communication parameters
Thecommunicationparametersontheserial-portandCentronicsportonyourPCarenormallysetwith

3. Embossing in "Saddle Stitch" format
Whenembossingin"saddlestitch"format(newspaperformat)theprocessissignificantlydifferentfrom
usinganormalBrailleembosser.Fortheuserthereisafewquestionsthathavetobeconsideredand
understoodinordertousethesysteminthecorrectway.Itisimportanttonoticethatthe4X4PROis
designedforembossingin"saddlestitch"formatonly. ItisnotpossibletoprintBrailleinnormalpage
format.
3.1 4X4 PRO embossing sequence
a)The4X4PROreceivesthecompletetextfile,upto200pagesofBraille.
b)ThereceivedtextisformattedintoBraillepages.
c)Thepagesisorganisedincorrectorderforembossing.Forexamplethefirstpaperonaneightpages
document,thepages1,2,7&8willbeembossed.Theprocessa,b&cwillresultinadelayofupto
approximately30secondsbeforethe4X4PROstartstoembossthedocument.
Organisationofthepagesinan8pagessaddlestitchbindingprintout.
d)Embossingofthepagesformatarealwayssideways.
e)Embossingofthedocumentcanbedoneincludingapre-foldingline.Theembosseddocumentis
placedinthedocumenttrayincorrectorderfordirectfoldingandstapling.
3.2 Pre-folding line strength
Thepre-foldinglineisprintedinordertosimplifythebindingandfoldingprocessoftheprinted
magazine.Thelinecanbeadjustedinstrength,aswellasitcanbede-selected.
Tochangethestrengthofthepre-folding,gotosetup/option/item"printfolding".
Value0disablesthepre-foldingline.
Value1-5givesthestrengthofthepre-foldingline
.

lowerpartoftheprinter.Thenormalpositionofthedocumentguidesisfivemillimetresintothepaper
margin.

ThepanelisoriginallydesignedfortheIndexEverestBrailleembosser,whichhasafewdifferent
featureswhysomeofthekeysaredisabledwhentheyareusedfortheIndex4X4PRO.
Note!WinBraillewillovertakeallcommandsfromthefrontpanel.Thecommandsonthefrontpanel
areapplicableonlywhentheembosserisconnectedtoaDOSoperatedcomputerortogetherwitha
BrailleeditorworkinginWindows,controllingtheembosserwithatextbaseddriver,e.g.Duxbury.

SerialCommunicationandOptions.
4.5 Print mode
PrintModeincludeskeysforchangingbetweenthedifferentprintmodes. Youcanchoosebetween
Normal or Reformatted.

InNormalmodethe4X4PROwillprinttheBrailleasitisformattedinthetextfile. Thetexthastobe
formattedwiththecorrectcharactersperlineaccordingtothesetupoftheembosser.
4.5.2 Reformatted
Inreformattedprintmodethe4X4PROformatsthetexttoeraseanyexcessspacesinthetextfile,e.g.
multiplespaces,FF(FormFeed)andCR/LF(Newline).Thisfunctionisveryusefulwhenprintinga
textfilemadeforinkprintinBrailleornormalliterary(grade1)Braille.
Re-formattingfunctionworksinthefollowingway:
Autoline-feedandwordwrapisautomaticallysetON.
1ormorespaceissubstitutedwith1space.
1CR/LFiserased.
