1 Introduction
Congratulations on your purchase of this Index Basic-D V5. Our goal at Index is to produce the best
braille embossers in the world. Over the years, Index has put a lot of effort into the continuous
development of the hardware and software of our products and we hope that you will have a long
and trouble free relationship with us. Thank you!
2 Safety information
·
Place the printer on a stable surface.
·
Keep the Braille printer's ventilation inlets and outlets clear.
·
Connect the Braille printer only to a grounded outlet.
·
Use only the power supply supplied with the printer.
·
Warning: This is a Class A product. In a domestic environment this product may cause radio
interference in which case the user may be required to take adequate measures.
·
Warning: The user is recommended to use ear protection or an acoustic hood to reduce the
sound pressure. Prolonged exposure without protection may result in hearing loss.
·
Warning: Do not use the power cord or power supply if it's damaged.
2.1 Approvals
There are two types of Index Basic-D V5, which use different main boards. The types we have are
1365 and 1366. To find out which type of embosser you have, you can:
·
Read the type information on the serial label. If the type information is missing the type is 1365.
·
Read the type information on the INFO PAGE that is in the embosser package.
·
Listen to the embosser information
oPress HELP and the embosser will speak out the embosser information
oIf the firmware version is earlier than 2022-June-06, the type is 1365.
ootherwise the type is spoken in the message
·
Printing the information page
oPress HELP+HELP to print out the information page
oIf the type information is missing on the printout (firmware version earlier than 2022-June-06),
then the type is 1365.
ootherwise the type will be printed.
·
In the web interface and on the INFO page, section Printer Information
oIf the type information is missing on the printout (firmware version earlier than 2022-June-06),
then the type is 1365
ootherwise the type is visible in the table.
Please read the section below depending on your type of embosser.
2.1.1 Approvals for type 1365
FCC Compliance

This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits for a Class B digital device,
pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC Rules. These limits are designed to provide reasonable protection
against harmful interference in a residential installation. This equipment generates, uses and can
radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the instructions,
may cause harmful interference to radio communications. However, there is no guarantee that
interference will not occur in a particular installation. If this equipment does cause harmful
interference to radio or television reception, which can be determined by turning the equipment off

and on, the user is encouraged to try to correct the interference by one or more of the following
measures:
Reorient or relocate the receiving antenna
Increase the separation between the equipment and receiver

Operation is subject to the following two conditions
This device may not cause interference, and this device must accept any interference, including
interference that may cause undesired operation of the device. Under Industry Canada regulations,
this radio transmitter may be operated only with an antenna of a type and maximum (or lesser) gain
approved for the transmitter by Industry Canada. To reduce potential radio interference to other
users, the type of antenna and its gain should be selected so that the equivalent isotropically
radiated power (e.i.r.p.) is no greater than that required for successful communication. Equipment
operating in the band 5150-5250 MHz is for indoor use only to reduce the potential for harmful
interference to co-channel mobile satellite systems; the maximum permissible antenna gain for

The certification number of the ODIN-W1 MIC is 204-510008.
The ODIN-W1 module is restricted in the Japanese market to indoor use only when operating in the
5.2/5.3 GHz band.

Sterling-LWB
Type 1366 Index Braille printers contain a Varisite SOM module with an integrated Sterling LWB

3 Getting started
This section will help you set up your embosser. First you need to unpack the embosser. Second,
you need to turn it on and remove the transport lock. Once the embosser is switched on and ready,
you need to load paper. Finally, you will make a first print with your embosser.
3.1 Unpack Index Basic-D V5
Check that the package is not damaged.
Your embosser package contains the following items.
- Index Basic-D V5
- Unpack instruction, printed and Braille
- Index Final Pack Checklist
- Information page in Letter and Braille
- Kit box containing
- Power supply
- USB memory stick
- Power cord - EUR
- Power cord - UK
- Power cord - US
- USB cable A/B
- USB extension cable
- English Getting started guide
- 11"x12" paper
To unpack the embosser, follow the steps below.
- Cut the strips
- Open the top of the box
- Remove the packing box by lifting it up
- Remove the packing material
- Remove and check the Index final pack checklist
- Remove the kit box and check that all parts are included.
- Remove the embosser from the bottom foam
- Open the lid and remove the dry bag
- Close the lid
- Save all packing material for future use
3.2 Power up the Index Basic-D V5
Power up the embosser for the first time.
- Select and connect the power cord according to your power outlet.
- Connect the power cord to a grounded outlet.
- Press the ON button on the control panel to switch the embosser on.
- The ON button will start flashing and the fan will start for a short time.
- The embosser will say "Index Basic-D V5 wizard for removing transport locking".
- The embosser will say "Index Basic-D V5 wizard for removing transport locking".
- The transport lock is the green steel pin on the back of the embosser.
- Twist it loose and pull the pin out.
- Store the transport locking pin in the holders on the rear panel.
- Press OK to continue with the wizard
- It will now say "Ok, Wizard complete, press OK to exit and restart the printer".
- Press OK and the embosser will restart.
- The embossing head will now find it's reference point and it will say "Index Basic-D V5 ".
- The embosser is now ready to print and you can load paper.

3.3 Load paper to Index Basic-D V5
Index Basic-D V5 is a tractor feed embosser. The default setting is 11"x12" paper and double-sided
printing.
- Open the lid
- Open the lid on the tractors
- Place the paper in the left tractor and close it
- Place the paper in the right tractor and close it
- Pull the lever to release the right tractor
- Adjust the tractor/paper and close the lever.
- Close the lid
3.4 First print out on Index Basic-D V5
After loading paper, the Index Basic-D V5 is ready to print. To print the first document, do the
following
- Press HELP + HELP in a quick sequence.
- The embosser will print the embosser information page
The embosser is now printing and ready for connection. Depending on how you want to connect
and print, read the following section.

4 Connect embosser
The embosser can be connected using a USB cable or a network cable. It can also be connected
via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
4.1 Connect with USB
A driver must be installed before connecting the embosser to a computer using the USB A/B cable.
The driver is on the USB stick or can be downloaded from the Index website.
For Windows
Once the driver has been installed, connect the cable between the embosser and the computer.
The embosser is now installed with plug and play and you will find the Index Basic-D V5 as a printer
on your computer.
MAC
Once the driver has been installed, connect the USB cable between the embosser and the
computer.
Go to Printers & Scanners under System Preferences. Click on the + (plus) sign and locate the
embosser in the list, it will have the Kind set as USB. Change the name of the embosser. Select
“Choose a Driver…” and select the correct embosser model and version and click Add and the
embosser is now installed.
4.2 Connect to wired network (LAN)
A network cable is not included. We recommend that you use a CAT5 or higher cable. Before
connecting the network cable, remove the black plug from the RJ45 port.
Connect the network cable to the embosser and then to the network socket. The embosser will
automatically connect and announce the IP address it has received.
To repeat the IP address, press HELP + 10.
Windows
You must install the Windows driver before adding the embosser as a network printer in Windows.
The driver is on the USB stick or can be downloaded from the Index website.
The embosser must be installed as a network printer. If you don't know how to do this, we
recommend you search the web for "Installing a printer in Windows".
MAC
The embosser must be installed as a network printer. If you don't know how to do this, we
recommend you search the web for "Installing a printer on MAC".
4.3 Connect with WiFi
There are several ways to connect the embosser to a Wi-Fi network. Note that the embosser only
supports the 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi band.
WPS connection
Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) is a network security standard for connecting a device to a Wi-Fi
router. The embosser supports WPS to connect to a WiFi network. Check your router's manual to
see if it supports WPS and how to enable WPS on the router. You will enable WPS after you have
enabled WPS on the embosser.

On the embosser, you can enable WPS from the user interface. Open the UI and go to
Communication/Manage WiFi network/List WiFi networks that support WiFi protected setup. Select
your WiFi network.
Refer to your router's manual to find out how to use the WPS function on the router.
Use a command file
Before you can use USB to set up the WiFi connection, you must be able to print a file on the
embosser. Read the section How to print and then return to this section to set up WiFi.
To set up WiFi using the USB connection, you must create a command file. The command string to
send to the embosser is
[ESC]C"SSID""[your ssid]","PassPhrase""[your passphrase]";
- Open a plain text file editor, such as Notepad in Windows.
- Create a new file
- Copy and paste the above command string - IMPORTANT: the first character ([ESC]) must be
included.
- Replace [your ssid] with the SSID for your WiFi network.
- Replace [your passphrase] with the passphrase for your WiFi network.
- Save the file as ConnectToWiFi.ibe.
- Now "print" the command file as described in the How to print section.
Use the web interface
You must be connected to a network using the wired network configuration before you can use the
web interface on the embosser to set up the WiFi connection.
- Open a browser and enter the IP address of the embosser in the address field.
- Use the web interface to connect the embosser to your preferred Wi-Fi network.

5 How to print
Now that the embosser is running and connected, you can set it up to print documents and files.
How you print files depends on your environment. You can use a computer with a driver installed, or
you can use your mobile phone or tablet to print files.
5.1 Print from Windows
If you are using a computer with Windows, you will already have the Windows driver installed. The
installation of the driver also installs Direct-Braille, which can be used to print files from Windows.
Direct-Braille supports several common file types such as docx, txt, rtf and pdf. After installing the
driver, right click on the supported file types and select Direct-Braille. The file will be sent to your
installed embosser and printed with the current Braille layout. If you have more than one Index
embosser installed on your computer, you will see a list of your installed embossers. Select the
embosser on which you want to print the document.
5.2 Print from MAC
You can print directly to the embosser from the following applications on MAC:
• Pages
• Preview
• Adobe Acrobat Reader
To print open the document that you want to print and go to File -> Print and select the correct
embosser and click on print.
5.3 Use the web interface for printing
If the embosser is connected to a wired or Wi-Fi network, you can use the web interface to print
files. The web interface can be used from a computer, mobile phone or tablet. To print using the
Web Interface, follow the steps below:
- The computer and the embosser must be connected to the same network.
- Open a browser on your computer
- If you don't know the IP address for the embosser, press HELP + 10
- Enter the IP address for the embosser into the browser.
- The web interface will now open and may take a moment to initialise.
- Select the "Browse..." button
- Browse for the file you wish to print. Only supported file types will be listed in the file window.
- Select the file and press Open
- Press Print to send the document for printing
- The printer will begin printing the document.
