About the 2100 Universal
Access Point
The 2100 Universal Access Point™ (UAP) is a
transparent bridge that enables your wireless
end devices to communicate with devices on
your wired network.

Additionally, if the UAP has a 900 MHz Falcon
radio or two 2.4 GHz OpenAir radios installed,
you can configure the UAP as one of these
devices:
•Point-to-point bridge, which connects two
wired networks, such as between buildings
•Repeater or wireless access point, which
extends the range of your wireless devices
After you configure and install the UAP through
a serial connection, you can manage it remotely
using SNMP, Telnet, or a Web browser.
System Requirements
To configure the 2100 Universal Access Point,
you need:
•Power cable
•Antenna (and antenna cable for an external
antenna)
•RS-232 null-modem cable
•Terminal or PC with open serial port
If you are using the UAP as an access point or
point-to-point bridge, you also need:
•Ethernet cable drop and cable
Understanding the LEDs
The UAP has five LEDs that are identified in
the following illustration.

Accessing the Ports
You must remove the cable access door to
access the Power, 10BaseT, 10Base2, and Serial
ports. To remove the door, loosen the
thumbscrews on the door and then slide it off.

perform a basic configuration using the default
settings. For detailed information about
configuring the UAP, see the 21XX Universal
Access Point Technical Reference Manual (Part
No. 067150).

Performing a Basic
Configuration
Follow these steps to perform a basic
configuration that uses the default settings.
1. Use the RS-232 null-modem cable to
connect the serial port on the UAP to a
serial port on your PC.
2. Use a communications program such as
HyperTerminal to configure the serial
communications parameters on your PC to:
9600 baud
8 data bits
no parity
1 stop bit
no flow control
3. Connect the power cable to the UAP and
then to a power source.
4. Press Enter when the message “Starting
system”appears on the screen. The logon
screen appears.
5. Type the default password Intermec and
press Enter. The Configuration menu
appears.
6. Use the Quick Start menu to configure these
parameters:
IP Address
IP Subnet Mask
LAN ID (Domain)
You also need to configure IP Router if the
UAP will communicate with devices on
another subnetwork.
7. Configure the radio parameters.
•If you are using 2.4 GHz OpenAir
radios, configure these parameters:
Channel
Subchannel
Security ID
•If you are using 900 MHz Falcon radios,
configure Mode-Channel.
•If you are using IEEE 802.11 radios,
configure these parameters:
Network name
Frequency
•If you are using UHF radios in the
United States and you are required to
transmit a call sign, configure Call Sign.
8. Save the configuration.
9. Disconnect the null-modem and power
cables.
Now that you have configured the UAP, you can
install it in your network.
Installing the UAP
Follow these steps to install the UAP in your
network.
1. Position the UAP in the desired location.
2. Connect the UAP to a power supply.
3. To use the UAP as an access point or point-
to-point bridge, connect the UAP to the
Ethernet network.
4. Attach an antenna or antenna cable to the
antenna connector on the UAP.

Mounting the UAP
You can mount the UAP to a wall or beam using
an Intermec mounting bracket kit. Contact your
Intermec representative to order one of the kits:
•Mounting bracket kit (Part No. 068918)
•Rotating mounting bracket kit (Part No.
068751)

Opening this product may void the warranty.
The internal workings of this product can only
be accessed by Intermec service personnel.
Radio replacements and upgrades require
Intermec service personnel.
