JBL Mode!5306 Mixer/Preamplifier
The JBL 5306 is a solid-statemixer/preamplifiercapable of
integrating two programchannels and six microphoneinputs.
Itfeaturesoperator-orientedcontrols,exceptionallywide
dynamicrange,extendedfrequencyresponse, low noise, and
minimalintermodulationdistortion.
Each of thesix microphonechannels is equippedwith an
overdriveindicatorthatflasheswhen its preamplifiercircuit
begins to overload. In use, the indicatorbecomesoperative
beforedistortionreachesaudiblelevels,providingample
warning to make the propergainadjustment. The unusual
dynamicrange of the 5306resultsfrom a preamplifiercircuit
whoseoperationalcharacteristics are changed asthe gain
control is adjusted.Reducing the voltagegain of the circuit
permitsgreaterinputwithoutclipping the outputsignal.
Since the MasterGaincontrols the mixingcircuit ina similar
manner, the 5306 is particularlywell-equipped to handle
extremeloudnessvariations.
Installation
Mounting
The5306 canbe rack-mounted in threeEl A standardspaces
withoutadditionalbracing or ventilation. All external con-
nections are made onthe rearpanelwhereconnectors are"
organized and labeled by function. The unit is ready to use
asshipped;however,variousmodifications or additions,des-
cribedelsewhere in thismanual, maybe desirable for specific
applications.
Note: All low-levelamplificationcircuitry canbe adversely
affected by strongmagneticfields. For thisreason, itis
recommendedthat the 5306 be located at leastseveninches
from any poweramplifier or similarsource of electro-
magneticradiation.

inputConnections
Program—Theprogramchannels are wired for unbalanced
50,000-ohmoperation andare equippedwithbothscrew
terminals and phonejacks onthe rearpanel.Either ofthe
channels canbe converted to 600-ohmbridginginput by
removing the jumperbetweenpins 2 and8 (marked by
w^'tedots) ofthe transformersocketwhich is located on
t.chassis, and inserting a JBL5196 plug-intransformer.
Access tothe chassis canbe gained by removing thetop
coverplatewhich is held in place by eightsheetmetal
screws.
Program 1 willaccept thelow leveloutput ofa magnetic
phonocartridge ifthe jumperbetweensocketpins 2 and8
isremoved anda model 5192 PhonoPreamplifierModule is
inserted inits place. The5192 connects the phonojacks on
therearpanel tothe Program 1 preamplifiercircuit.
The two jacks,marked"PhonoInput/' are paralleled
tocombine the signalsfrom a stereocartridge; a monaural
cartridge canbe pluggedintoeither ofthe jacks.
Microphone—Themicrophonechannels are eachtransformer
isolated and balanced for50to 600-ohminputs.Input con-
nections are madethroughfemale XLR connectors. Pin1
ofeachconnector is ground and pins 2 and3 arethe balanced
input.
Au*'qhlevelinputthatwouldordinarily be connected tothe
pi. ,/am channels maybefedtoanyofthe microphoneinputs
ifexternallosspads are employed.Undertheseconditions,
microphonechannels so usedcannot be drivenbeyond .5 volts
RMSwithoutexcessivedistortion.
Ahighlevel,highimpedanceprogramsource,such asa tuner
orceramicphonocartridge, maybe connected toa micro-
phonechannel ifthe programchannels arenot available. To
accomplishthis, itis necessary to make a pin adaptor to
replace the microphoneinputtransformer.Connect a 1-micro-
faradcapacitoracrosspins 5 and9 and connect a jumper
betweenpins1 and3 ofthe adaptor.With the adaptor in
place,inputimpedancewill be about300,000ohms, andpin
2 oftheXLR connectorwill be connected to ground. The peak
flasherwillindicatewheninputvoltage istoo high.This
modificationwillalsoallow useofa highimpedancemicrophone.
Expander—Afive pinXLR femaleconnector,marked"Expander
Input,"suppliespower toa JBL 53088-channeiexpander and
receives the mixedsignalfrom the expander. A "Y"adaptor
can be fabricated to allow theuseoftwo 5308's. The Expander
Inputmust notbe used to supplypower toany otheraccessory.
Output Connections
Theoutputtransformer hasa splitsecondarywinding to permit
600-ohm or dual150/600-ohmconnections.
Balanced—Toachieve a 600-ohmbalancedoutput,terminals
2 and3 onthe rearpanelmust be strapped. The output
connection canbe made atthe male XLR connectorpins 2 and
3 orat screwterminals 1 and4 with the shieldconnection topin
1 ofthe connector oratthe terminalmarked"GND."

leled. Starting atthe left ofthe terminalstrip,strapterminals
1 and3 and strapterminal 2 to terminal 4.The output
connection can then be made at terminals 1 and4.

The two 150-ohmwindings maybe usedseparately astwo
isolated150-ohmoutputs.Terminals1 and2,and3 and4 will
eachprovide a 1507600-ohmoutputwhen the strapping is
removed. Whenusingdualoutputs, the mixeroutputlevelswill
each be reduced by approximately 6 dB. Additionalamplification
may be necessary to insuresufficientgainundertheseoperating
conditions.
Dual Balanced Outputs
Unbalanced—Thetransformer canbe bypassed to achieve an
unbalanced600-ohmoutput atthe phonejackmarked"6000
Direct." The jack can also be used-tofeedanotherbridginginput
when the balanced600-ohmline is beingused for otherservice.
Monitor—Theoutput ofthe monitoramplifier is available onthe
frontpanel andthe phonejackmarked"Monitor" onthe rear
panel. The outputsignal is unbalanced and unequalized foruse
with a 600-ohm load.
Grounding
Input—Eachmicrophonecircuit is grounded tothe chassis atthe
printedcircuitboardinput. Any additionalconnectionbetween
thecircuit and chassis or ground may cause hum.
Output—When the balancedoutput ofthe 5306 is connected to
apoweramplifierthatdoes not have an isolationtransformer,
thecircuit-to-chassisconnection atthe poweramplifiermust be
removed. However, itis necessary to makesurethat thetwo chassis
remainelectricallyconnected. If the*chassis are mounted inthe
samerackcabinet orif bothunitshave3-wirepowercords,this
conditionwill bemet.A bindingpost is provided foruseinthe
eventthat no othergroundconnectionexists.When the outputtrans-
former has beenbypassed andthe 5306 is usedwith a devicethat
does not have an inputtransformer, the shield ofthe connecting
cablemust be grounded at bothends.
SystemGainAdjustment
Toinsurethatoptimumsignal-to-noiseratios are maintained
when the 5306 is usedwithadditionalequipmentbetween
it andthe poweramplifier, the gain ofthe auxiliarydevices
must be adjusted so that the 5306 is allowed torunat normal
levels, i.e.0 to+8dBm.Ifanyof thesedevices donot have
inputattenuators,then a fixednetworkmust be constructed
or a variableattenuatorprovided.Extragain in thesedevices
must be individuallyattenuated andthe finalsystemgain
settingmade atthe poweramplifiergaincontrol.Caremust
betaken to insurethat no component is beingoverdriven.
Operation
MasterGain—TheMasterGainallows the operator to adjust
thelevel ofail inputssimultaneously. Itisa feedbackcontrol
thatpreventsoverdriving ofthe mixercircuits andthe internal
amplificationstages.
MixingControls—Theprogram and microphonecontrolsshould
bepositioned at"5"for averageinputsignallevels. TheVU
meter has beencalibrated to indicateapproximately 0 VUata
linelevel of+8dBm;an accesshole is provided onthetop cover
forreadjustment.Amplifiersthatfollow the 5306musthave
theirattenuationcontrolsproperly setto keepfromover-
driving the system. It should be rememberedthat the 5306 is
capable of producing +24dBm beforeaudibleclipping.
Themicrophonechanneloverloadindicatorswilloperatewhen
thesignalpeaks are3 dB belowclipping; the inputlevel at
whichthisoccurs is dependentupon the setting ofthe channel
gaincontrol. Asan approximation, ata setting of"2",a
-2 dBm levelwillclip;while atthe maximumsetting, the clipping
levelwill be-22 dBm.Therefore,loss pad insertion is usually
notnecessary to attenuate a highlevelinputsignal. The indicator
circuit is designed to producenoticeableflasheractivitybefore
clippingoccurs and beforedistortionreachesaudiblelevels.
Thisprogressivewarningfunctionallows the operatorample
time to make any necessarygainadjustments.
EqualizerControls—Thedetentedequalizercontrols are marked
in 3 dB steps of boost andcutat20Hzand20kHztoa maxi-
mum of+ 15dB. They donot affectmidrangeprogram
material, nordo theyaffect the monitoroutput.
MonitorGain—Since the front and rearmonitoroutputs are
paralleled, their-levels are adjustedsimultaneously bya singlegain
control. Monitoroutput isnot affected bythe Equalizercontrols.
Equalization— The Equalizer controls affect output of the 5306
below 300 Hz and above 2000 Hz. Note that they do not affect
midrange program material.

Distortion levels of 1% and 0.2% at +78dBm output with the
Master Gain at "5."
7<rConfiguration—Frequency Response and THD

1. Connect the testoscillator toanyoneofthesix micro-
phoneinputsthrough a 40-dB pad with a standard
microphonecable. A padisnot necessarywhentesting
through oneofthetwo programinputs.
ZConnect anAC Voltmeter anda 620-ohm, 1-watt load
resistoracrossoutputterminalsmarked "600O
Balanced." Notethat thetwo centerterminalsshould
bestrapped.
31With one microphonechannel and MasterGain at maxi-
mum, setthe testoscillatorfrequency to1000Hzand
adjust its amplitude to indicate 1.95VRMS(+8dBm)on
the AC voltmeter.
4. Using 1.95VRMSasa referencelevel, the mixershould be
within + 1.0dB from20-20,000 Hz.
MicrophoneOverloadIndicator
1. With the testoscillatorstillconnected toanyoneofthe
sixmicrophoneinputs,connect theAC voltmeteracross
theoutput ofthe oscillator.
2. Setthe microphonegaincontrol at maximum, andthe
MasterGain at"O".
3. Setthe testoscillatorfrequency to1000Hzand increase
theamplitudeuntil the overloadindicatorstarts to flash.
The AC voltmetershouldread 40mV nominal.

Maintenance
Thefollowingprocedures are designed to assist inthe isolation
ofmalfunctions. The operationsdescribedshould be undertaken
onlyafter an investigation ofall externalconnections and adjust-
ments has indicated,beyondreasonabledoubt,that the problem
isactuallywithin the mixer.
ComponentAccess—The5306contains two circuitboard con-
figurations—asingleassemblycontaining the circuitry for mixing,
line, output and monitoramplification as well asthe power
supply; and threedual-channelmicrophonepreamplifiercircuit
assemblies.Eachmicrophonepreamplifierassemblyalsocontains
theinputtransformers and overloadindicatorcircuitry.
Toreach the mixerassembly for testing or service, thetop cover
must be removed(eight#6sheetmetalscrews)exposing the
circuitboard. To gainaccess tothe circuit'selectroniccom-
ponents,remove the heatsinkfrom the sub-chassis(three#6
machinescrews) andthe tonecontrolswitchesfrom the front
panel, push the circuitboardstraightback to clear the switch
she and lift it awayfrom the sub-chassis. The microphonepre-
amplifiers canbe tested by removing the bottomcover(eight#6
sheetmetalscrews)over the threedual-channelcircuitboards
which are mounted onthe sub-chassis.
Note: Thetwo mountingscrewsnearest the inputtransformers
of the microphonepreamplifiersmust be securelytightened
sincethesescrewscomplete the mainsystemground for each
channel. Wherever a circuitboard has beenremovedfrom the
chassis, a visualcheckshould be conducted for possibleburned
components,looseconnections or otherobviousconditionswhich
mightsuggest a source of trouble.
Testing—All ofthe majorcircuitsused inthe 5306 are connected
incascade;consequently,eachsuccessiveunitmustoperate
properly in order to test the followingstages. A systematic
analysisshould be performed inthe followingsequence:

Note: Since allofthe amplificationstages ofthe 5306employ
theprinciple of negativefeedback,measuring AC signallevels
inside ofthe loopwill not providemeaningfulinformation. The
onlysignificantdatawill be found inthe signalspresent atthe
input and output of eachmajorcircuit.
Table I,DC TestVoltages,provides theDC voltagesmeasured
withrespect to ground for eachtransistorterminal. It should
benotedthat a highinputimpedance (10 megohms or greater)
DCvoltmetershould be used.Although ailofthe transistor
terminalvoltages are important, the collectorvoltages,marked
with an asterisk (*),arethe mostsignificantwhendetermining
thateachmajoramplifierstage is operatingproperly.
