sealed-in battery and SMART HUSH™ Control to temporarily silence
nuisance alarms.

WHAT TO DO WHEN THE ALARM SOUNDS
SMOKE ALARM ACTIVATION
Smoke alarm pattern is three long beeps repeating
every 1.5 seconds.
The smoke alarm takes precedence when both smoke
and carbon monoxide are present.
•Alertsmallchildreninthehomeaswellasanyoneelsethatmight
havedifficultyrecognizingtheimportanceofthealarmsounding
orthatmighthavedifficultyleavingtheareawithouthelp.
•Leaveimmediatelybyyourescapeplan.Everysecondcounts,so
don’twastetimegettingdressedorpickingupvaluables.
•Inleaving,don’topenanyinsidedoorwithoutfirstfeelingits
surface.Ifhot,orifyouseesmokeseepingthroughcracks,don’t
openthatdoor!Instead,useyouralternateexit.Iftheinsideof
thedooriscool,placeyourshoulderagainstit,openitslightly
andbereadytoslamitshutifheatandsmokerushin.
•Stayclosetotheflooriftheairissmoky.Breatheshallowly
throughacloth,wetifpossible.
•Onceoutside,gotoyourselectedmeetingplaceandmakesure
everyoneisthere.
•Callthefiredepartmentfromyourneighbor’shome-notfrom
yours!
•Don’treturntoyourhomeuntilthefireofficialssaythatitisall
righttodoso.
•Therearesituationswhereasmokealarmmaynotbeeffective
toprotectagainstfireasstatedintheNFPAStandard72.For
instance:
a)smokinginbed
b)leavingchildrenhomealone
c)cleaningwithflammableliquids,suchasgasoline
•Iftheescaperouterequiresyoutogothroughsmoke,crawllow
underthesmokewheretheairisclearer.

WHAT TO DO WHEN THE ALARM SOUNDS
CO ALARM ACTIVATION
Carbon monoxide (CO) alarm pattern is four quick
beeps repeating every 5 seconds.
WARNING:
ActivationoftheCO
AlarmindicatesthepresenceofCarbon
Monoxide(CO)whichcankillyou.
If the alarm sounds 4 quick “beeps”, repeating
every 5 seconds:
1)Immediatelymovetofreshair–outdoorsorbyanopen
door/window.Doaheadcounttocheckthatallpersonsare
accountedfor.Donotre-enterthepremisesnormoveaway
fromtheopendoor/windowuntiltheemergencyservices
respondershavearrived,thepremiseshavebeenairedout,
andyouralarmremainsinitsnormalcondition.
2)Callyourlocalemergencyservice.

Never restart the source of a CO problem until it has been
corrected. Never ignore the sound of the alarm!
If the alarm is sounding, pressing the test/reset button will
terminate the alarm. If the CO condition that caused the
alert in the first place continues, the alarm will reactivate.
If the unit alarms again within six minutes, it is sensing
high levels of CO which can quickly become a dangerous
situation.

this user guide near the alarm for future reference.
Do not try to repair the smoke alarm yourself. Refer to the
instructions in Warranty section for service.
Thisalarmdetectsproductsofcombustionusingphotoelectric
technologyandcarbonmonoxideusinganelectrochemicalcell.Many
timesthroughoutthisUser’sGuide,wewillrefertoCarbonMonoxide
as“CO.”
Thisalarmisacceptableforusenearkitchensorcookingareasbutcan
beusedinallotherresidentialapplicationswhereasmokeorCOalarm
isrequired.
Afterten(10)yearsofcumulativepowerup,thisunitwill“chirp”two
timesevery30seconds.Thisisan“operationalendoflife”feature
whichwillindicatethatitistimetoreplacethealarm.
Tohelpidentifythedatetoreplacetheunit,alabelhasbeenaffixedto
thesideofthealarm.Writethe“Replaceby”date(10yearsfrominitial
powerup)inpermanentmarkeronthelabelpriortoinstallingtheunit.

Homefiresdevelopindifferentwaysandareoftenunpredictable.For
maximumprotection,KidderecommendsthatbothIonizationand
Photoelectricalarmsbeinstalled.
•Abatterypoweredalarmmusthaveabatteryofthespecifiedtype,
ingoodconditionandinstalledproperly.
•Smokealarmsmustbetestedregularlytomakesurethebatteryand
thealarmcircuitsareingoodoperatingcondition.
•Smokealarmscannotprovideanalarmifsmokedoesnotreach
thealarm.Therefore,smokealarmsmaynotsensefiresstartingin
chimneys,walls,onroofs,ontheothersideofacloseddoororona
differentfloor.
•Ifthealarmislocatedoutsidethebedroomoronadifferentfloor,it
maynotwakeupasoundsleeper.
•Theuseofalcoholordrugsmayalsoimpairone’sabilitytohearthe
smokealarm.Formaximumprotection,asmokealarmshouldbe
installedineachsleepingareaoneverylevelofahome.
•Althoughsmokealarmscanhelpsavelivesbyprovidinganearly
warningofafire,theyarenotasubstituteforaninsurancepolicy.
Homeowners,landlordsandtenantsshouldhaveadequateinsurance
toprotecttheirlivesandproperty.
This alarm is not intended to alert hearing impaired individuals.
1. Limitations of Smoke Alarms

designedtodetectanyothergas.
• CAUTION: Thisalarmwillonlyindicatethepresenceofcarbon
monoxidegasatthesensor.Carbonmonoxidegasmaybepresent
inotherareas.NeverrestartthesourceofaCOproblemuntilithas
beenfixed.NEVERIGNORETHEALARM!
WARNING: This product is intended for use in ordinary
indoor locations of family living units. It is not designed to
measure compliance with commercial or industrial standards. It
is not suitable for installation in hazardous locations as defined
in your local building code.
•Theinstallationofthisdeviceshouldnotbeusedasasubstitutefor
properinstallation,useandmaintenanceoffuelburningappliances,
includingappropriateventilationandexhaustsystems.
•ThisalarmdoesnotpreventCOfromoccurring,norcanitsolveany
existingCOproblem.
WARNING: This device is designed to protect individuals
from acute effects of carbon monoxide exposure. It may not
fully safeguard individuals with specific medical conditions.
If in doubt, consult a medical practitioner. Individuals with
medical problems may consider using warning devices which
provide audible and visual signals for carbon monoxide
concentrations under 30 PPM.
•Thisalarmhasnotbeeninvestigatedforcarbonmonoxidedetection
below70PPM.
•Thiscarbonmonoxidealarmrequiresacontinuoussupplyofelectrical
power–itwillnotworkwithoutpower.

• Locatethefirstalarmintheimmediateareaofthebedrooms.
Trytomonitortheexitpath,asthebedroomsareusually
farthestfromtheexit.Ifmorethanonesleepingareaexists,
locateadditionalalarmsineachsleepingarea(Image1A).
• Locateadditionalalarmstomonitoranystairwayasstairwaysact
likechimneysforsmokeandheat.
• Locateatleastonealarmoneveryfloorlevel(Image1B).
• LocateanalarmineverySleepingRoom.
• Locateanalarmineveryroomwhereelectricalappliancesare
operated(i.e.portableheatersorhumidifiers).
• Locateanalarmineveryroomwheresomeonesleepswiththe
doorclosed.Thecloseddoormaypreventanalarmnotlocated
inthatroomfromwakingthesleeper.
• Smoke,heat,andcombustionproductsrisetotheceilingand
spreadhorizontally.Mountingthesmokealarmontheceilingin
thecenteroftheroomplacesitclosesttoallpointsintheroom.
Ceilingmountingispreferredinordinaryresidentialconstruction.
• Whenmountinganalarmontheceiling,locateitataminimum
of10cm(4”)fromthesidewall(Image2A).
• Whenmountingthealarmonthewall,useaninsidewallwith
thetopedgeofthealarmataminimumof10cm(4”)anda
maximumof30.5cm(12”)belowtheceiling(Image2A).
• Putsmokealarmsatbothendsofabedroomhallwayorlarge
roomifthehallwayorroomismorethan9.1m(30’)long.
• Formobilehomeinstallation,selectlocationscarefullytoavoid
thermalbarriersthatmayformattheceiling.Formoredetails,
see Mobile Homes.
• Installsmokealarmsonsloped,peakedorcathedralceilings
followingthemountingguidelinesoutlinedinimage2Band2C.

• Installatleast30.5cm(12”)awayfromfluorescentlightsas
electronicnoisemaycausenuisancealarms.
• Keepoutofinsectinfestedareas.Avoidexcessivelydusty,dirtyor

Inoldermobilehomesthatarenotwellinsulatedcomparedtopresent
standards,extremeheatorcoldcanbetransferredfromtheoutside
totheinsidethroughpoorlyinsulatedwallsandroof.Thismaycreate
athermalbarrierthatcanpreventthesmokefromreachinganalarm
mountedontheceiling.Insuchunits,installthesmokealarmonan
insidewallwiththetopedgeofthealarmataminimumof10cm(4”)
andamaximumof30.5cm(12”)belowtheceiling(Image2A).
Ifyouarenotsureabouttheinsulationinyourmobilehome,orifyou
noticethattheouterwallsandceilingareeitherhotorcold,installthe
alarmonaninsidewall.Forminimumprotection,installatleastone
alarmclosetothebedrooms.Foradditionalprotection,seeImage1A.
WARNING: Test your smoke alarm operation after R.V. or
mobile home vehicle has been in storage, before each trip and at
least once a week during use.

Attaching And Activating The Alarm
Thismodelisequippedwithafeaturethatautomaticallyactivatesthe
alarmwhenthealarmisattachedtothemountingplateforthefirst
time.Onceactivated,thebatterywillsupplypowertothealarmforthe
lifeofthealarm(10years)undernormalconditions.
Alignthealarmwiththemountingplateandrotateclockwise(right)
approximately45°untiltheunitstopsandclicksintoplace.DONOT
over-tighten.Ifunitneedstobere-aligned,rotatethealarmcounter
clockwise,removeandrotatetodesiredalignment.NOTE:Thealarmwill
mounttotheplateinthree
(3)positions(every120degrees).
Youwillknowpowerhasbeensuppliedwhenalarmbrieflychirps.Unit
willremainonuntilunitisdisabledbytheuseratalarm’sendoflife.
Donotovertightenthealarmasdamagetoalarmormountingsurface
mayoccur.
The alarm is now activated! Afterinstallation/activation,testyour
alarmasdescribedinOperationandTestingsection.
Warning: Failure to properly install and activate this alarm
will prevent proper operation of this alarm and will
prevent its response to fire hazards.

5. Operation And Testing
OPERATION:Thealarmisoperatingonceitisactivatedandtestingis
complete.Whenproductsofcombustionaresensed,orCOisdetected
theunitsoundsaloud85dbpulsatingalarmuntiltheairiscleared.
Thecarbonmonoxide(CO)alarmmonitorstheairforthepresenceofCO.
ItwillalarmwhentherearehighlevelsofCOpresent,andwhenthere
arelowlevelsofCOpresentoveralongerperiodoftime.WhenaCO
conditionmatcheseitherofthesesituations,thealarmwillsound,andbe
accompaniedbytheblinkingredLEDlight.
TheCOsensormeetsthealarmresponsetimeasfollows:
At70PPM,theunitmustalarmwithin60-240minutes.
At150PPM,theunitmustalarmwithin10-50minutes.
At400PPM,theunitmustalarmwithin4-15minutes.
TESTING:Testyouralarmbypressingthetestbuttonuntiltheunit
chirps,thenreleasethetestbutton.Theunitwillthenemit2setsof
threeslowbeepsfollowedby2setsoffourquickbeepsindicatingthat
thealarmisoperatingnormally.Thealarmwillsoundiftheelectronic
circuitry,horn,andbatteryareworking.Ifthealarmdoesnotsound,the
unitmustbereplaced.
Warning: Due to the loudness (85 decibels) of the alarm,
always stand an arm’s length (about 2.5 feet) away from the
unit or use ear protection when testing.
Weekly testing is required to ensure proper operation.Erraticor
lowvolumesound(ornosound)comingfromyouralarmmayindicate
adefectivealarmanditshouldbereturnedforservice.Seedeactivation
sectiontodeterminehowtopreparetheunitforshipmentordisposal.
Warning: DO NOT use an open flame to test your alarm, you
could damage the alarm or ignite combustible materials and start
a structure fire.

ThisSmokealarmisdesignedtominimizenuisancealarms.Cigarette
smokewillnotnormallycausetheunittoalarm,unlessthesmokeis
blowndirectlyintothealarm.Combustionparticlesfromcookingmay
setoffthealarmifitislocatedtooclosetoacookingappliance.Large
quantitiesofcombustibleparticlesaregeneratedfromspillsorwhen
broiling.Usingthefanonarangehoodwhichventstotheoutside
(non-recirculatingtype)willalsohelpremovethesecombustibleproducts
fromthekitchen.
Ifthealarmdoessoundthesmokealarmpatternof3longbeeps,
checkforfiresfirst.Ifafireisdiscovered,getoutandcallthefire
department.Ifnofireispresent,checktoseeifoneofthereasonslisted
in“LocationstoAvoid”mayhavecausedthealarm.
SMART HUSHTM CONTROL:TheSMARTHUSHTMcontrolthatis
extremelyusefulinakitchenareaorotherareapronetonuisance
alarms.TheSMARTHUSHTMfeaturehasthecapabilityoftemporarily
desensitizingthealarmcircuitforapproximately10minutes.
Thisfeatureistobeusedonlywhenaknownalarmcondition,suchas
smokefromcooking,activatesthealarm.Thesmokealarmisdesensi-
tizedbypushingtheTest/Hushbuttononthesmokealarmcover.Ifthe
smokeisnottoodense,thealarmwillsilenceimmediatelyandthered
LEDblinksevery10seconds.Thisindicatesthatthealarmisinatempo-
rarilydesensitizedcondition.
Thesmokealarmwillautomaticallyresetafterapproximately10minutes
andsoundthealarmifparticlesofcombustionarestillpresent.
TheSMARTHUSHTMfeaturecanbeusedrepeatedlyuntiltheairhas
beenclearedoftheconditioncausingthealarm.PushingtheTest/Hush
buttononthealarmwillendthetemporarilydesensitizedperiod.
Ifthesmokeisnottoodense,aftertenminutesthealarmwillreturnto
normaloperation.
NOTE: Dense smoke will override the SMART HUSHTM feature and sound
a continuous alarm.
CAUTION: Before using the alarm SMART HUSHTM feature, identify the

batterylife.

FOR ANY REASON!
Donottrytorepairthesmokealarmyourself.Noserviceableparts
included.
Low battery:Thisalarmisequippedwithalowbatterymonitorcircuit
whichwillcausethealarmtoproduceasingle“chirp”approximately
every60secondsandblinktheRedLEDevery30seconds,fora
minimumofseven(7)daysshouldthebatterybecomelow.
THE UNIT MUST BE DEACTIVATED (see “Deactivation of Alarm”
section) and replaced within 7 days of the first occurrence of the
“Low Battery Warning” to provide continuous alarm protection.
WARNING!
• Deactivation of the alarm is permanent. Once the alarm has
been deactivated, it cannot be reactivated!
• Once deactivated, the alarm will NO LONGER DETECT
SMOKE.
• Once the alarm is deactivated the battery will be depleted
and the alarm will no longer function.
• Once the alarm has been deactivated, it cannot be mounted
onto the mounting plate or reactivated.

Carbonmonoxide(CO)isacolorless,odorless,andtastelesspoisongas
thatcanbefatalwheninhaled.COinhibitstheblood’scapacitytocarry
oxygen.
WARNING! Failure to turn off alarm as instructed prior to
disposal may create potential for lithium battery related fire or
hazard.
Break through label with a
screw driver.
Turn the screw to the “OFF”
location. This will deactivate the
alarm, stop the low battery “chirp”
and render the alarm safe for
disposal by draining the battery.
To Deactivate The Alarm:
Remove the alarm from the
mounting plate by rotating it in the
direction indicated by the arrows
on the cover of the alarm.
On back side of alarm, locate the
area on product label.

Possible Sources Of Carbon Monoxide
Insideyourhome,appliancesusedforheatingandcookingarethe
mostlikelysourcesofCO.Vehiclesrunninginattachedgaragescanalso
producedangerouslevelsofCO.
COcanbeproducedwhenburninganyfossilfuel:gasoline,propane,
naturalgas,oilandwood.Itcanbeproducedbyanyfuel-burning
appliancethatismalfunctioning,improperlyinstalled,ornotventilated
correctly,suchas:
Possiblesourcesincludefurnaces,gasranges/stoves,gasclothes
dryers,waterheaters,portablefuelburningspaceheaters,fireplaces,
wood-burningstovesandcertainswimmingpoolheaters.Blocked
chimneysorflues,backdraftingandchangesinairpressure,corroded
ordisconnectedventpipes,oralooseorcrackedfurnaceexchanger
canalsoreleaseCOintoyourbuilding.Vehiclesandothercombustion
enginesrunninginanattachedgarageandusingacharcoal/gasgrillor
hibachiinanenclosedareaareallpossiblesourcesofCO.
ThefollowingconditionscanresultintransientCOsituations:
Excessivespillageorreverseventingoffuel-burningappliancescaused
byoutdoorambientconditionssuchas:Winddirectionand/orvelocity,
includinghighgustsofwind,heavyairintheventpipes(cold/humidair
withextendedperiodsbetweencycles),negativepressuredifferential
resultingfromtheuseofexhaustfans,simultaneousoperationof
severalfuel-burningappliancescompetingforlimitedinternalair,vent
pipeconnectionsvibratingloosefromclothesdryers,furnaces,orwater
heaters,obstructionsin,orunconventional,ventpipedesignswhich
canamplifytheabovesituations,extendedoperationofunventedfuel-
burningdevices(range,oven,fireplace,etc.),temperatureinversions
whichcantrapexhaustgassesneartheground,caridlinginanopenor
closedattachedgarage,ornearahome.

Everyyear,havetheheatingsystem,vents,chimneyandflueinspected
andcleanedbyaqualifiedtechnician.Alwaysinstallappliances
accordingtomanufacturer’sinstructionsandadheretolocalbuilding
codes.Mostappliancesshouldbeinstalledbyprofessionalsand
inspectedafterinstallation.Regularlyexamineventsandchimneys
forimproperconnections,visiblerust,orstains,andcheckforcracks
infurnaceheatexchangers.Verifythatthecolorofflameisblueon
pilotlightsandburners.Ayellowororangeflameisasignthatthe
fuelisnotburningcompletelyandmaybereleasingCO.Teachall
householdmemberswhatthealarmsoundslikeandhowtorespond.Fire
Departments,mostutilitycompaniesandHVACcontractorswillperform
COinspections,somemaychargeforthisservice.It’sadvisabletoinquire
aboutanyapplicablefeespriortohavingtheserviceperformed.Kiddewill
notpayfor,orreimbursetheowneroruserofthisproduct,foranyrepair
ordispatchcallsrelatedtothealarmsounding.
Symptoms of CO Poisoning
Initialcarbonmonoxidepoisoningsymptomsaresimilartothefluwith
nofeverandcanincludedizziness,severeheadaches,nausea,vomiting
anddisorientation.Everyoneissusceptiblebutexpertsagreethatunborn
babies,pregnantwomen,seniorcitizensandpeoplewithheartor
respiratoryproblemsareespeciallyvulnerable.Ifsymptomsofcarbon
monoxidepoisoningareexperiencedseekmedicalattentionimmediately.
COpoisoningcanbedeterminedbyacarboxyhemoglobintest.
ThefollowingsymptomsarerelatedtoCARBONMONOXIDEPOISONING
andshouldbediscussedwithALLmembersofthehousehold:
1. Mild Exposure:Slightheadache,nausea,vomiting,fatigue(often
describedas“Flu-like”symptoms).
2. Medium Exposure:Severethrobbingheadache,drowsiness,
confusion,fastheartrate.
3. Extreme Exposure:Unconsciousness,convulsions,cardio
respiratoryfailureanddeath.
