Knob
Primary setting.
Function and alternate settings.

Power. Turn on the power.

Intensity. Adjust this so that the
trace is visible but without glare.
(There should be a straight line on the
screen after power-up. If not, adjust the
vertical position knob (12-1 or 12-2)
until it comes into view.)

Focus. Focus the trace.

Illumination. Turn this down.
This provides back-lighting for the
screen to illuminate the grid lines.

Sweep Mode. Set to Auto.
This sets how the scope synchronizes
its sweep with an input signal.
Auto: For frequencies > 10 hz.
Norm: For frequencies < 10 hz.

Slope. Set to positive.
+ slope triggers on increasing trace.
- slope triggers on decreasing trace.

Coupling. Set to DC.
This sets how an input signal “triggers”
an internal sweep. Set to DC even for
AC circuits.

Source. Set to INT (internal).
Selects the source for a sweep voltage.

Level. Turn completely
counterclockwise (clicked)
This sets the threshold voltage for the
scope to begin its internal sweep.
Adjust this knob to stabilize a confused
trace.

Hold off. .Set to midrange.
Adjust this if the trace runs. Use in
conjunction with the Level knob (9)

Horizontal Position. Adjust this
to center the trace horizontally.

Time/Div
Set to 1 millisecond per division.
This controls the sweep rate of the
electron beam and sets the horizontal
(time) scale of the scope display. A
“division” is the space between the grid
lines (horizontally).

Variable (Sweep). Turn fully
clockwise (calibrated). Knob in.
This knob varies the timing of the
internal sweep. When the knob is fully
clockwise, the scope is “calibrated”. If
the scope is not calibrated, the time
scale on the screen will not be correct.
Knob out: Magnifies the time scale.

Vertical Position –Channel 2
Adjust these to center the trace
vertically. Knob pushed in.

Vert (vertical) Mode.
Set to channel 1.
Ch1: Displays Channel 1.
Ch 2: Displays Channel 2.
ALT: Alternates between the two
channels. Use for dual display for
frequencies > 10 hz.
Chop: Alternates between the two
channels. Use for dual display for
frequencies < 10 hz.
Add: Displays the sum of the two
signals.

AC –Gnd –DC switches
(Channels 1 and 2)
Set channel 1 to DC.
AC: Subtract out any DC components
of the signal.
Gnd: Displays a flat line.
DC: Displays the signal as is. We will
always set this to DC, even for AC
circuits.

Volt/Div knobs
(channels 1 and 2)
Set channel 1 to 1 volt per
division.
These knobs determine the vertical
(voltage) scale on the screen. A
“division” is the space between the grid
lines (vertically).
Note that this is the inner part of the
knob. The outer part is the variable
voltage knob.

Var (variable voltage) knob
(channels 1 and 2)
Turn channel 1 Var to fully
clockwise, with the knob pushed
in.
These knobs vary the voltage scale on
the screen for each channel. When the
knob is fully clockwise, the scope is
“calibrated.” If the scope is not
calibrated, the voltage readings on the
screen will not be correct.
Knob out: Magnifies the voltage
display.

Int Trig. Set to Channel 1.
This selects the channel the scope will
key on to time its internal sweep. Set
this to the primary channel you are
looking at.

Channel 1 input terminal
Channel 2 input terminal
Connect a BNC connector to the
channel 1 terminal.
After you have set up the signal
generator (see below), connect the
banana leads from the SG to the BNC
connector on channel 1.
