ThissectionprovidesanoverviewoftheKMD-5540CommTalkProtocolInterface.

KMD-5540.Carefullyreviewthisinformationpriortoaemptinginstallation.
Note:
Theactualcongurationoftheinterfacewilldependonthemodel.KMDigital
connectionsaremadetothelesideoftheinterfaceandthird-partyequipmentis
connectedontherightside.
Mounting
UsethefourmountingholestosecurelymounttheinterfaceinsideaUL-approved
EnclosedEnergyManagementEquipmentPanelorothersuitableprotectiveenclo-
sure.SeeIllustration 2—Mounting Hole Locations on page 3.

RS-232 (EIA-232) Inputs
RS-232inputsareconnectedtotheterminalintheupperlecorneroftheinter-
face.
Detail
AsageneralruleinRS-232wiring,theRedleadistheReceive(Rx)leadandthe
BlackwireistheTransmit(Tx)lead.
Connecttheappropriateleadstotheindicatedconnectorsontheterminal.
RS-485 (EIA-485) Inputs
MakeconnectionstoanetworkusingtheRS-485connector.
Detail
AnEnd-of-LineconnectionwillhaveonlyonewireaachedtotheAandBtermi-
nals.SeeEOL (End Of Line) Seing on page 5forEOLswitchseing.
◆ Use18gauge,twisted-pair,shieldedcablewithcapacitanceofnomorethan
about50picofaradsperfootforallnetworkwiring.Beldencablemodel#82760
meetsKMCrequirements.
◆ Connectthenodesofthenetworkinadaisy-chainarrangement.Thismeans
connectingtheAterminalinparallelwithallotherAterminalsandconnecting
theBterminalinparallelwithallotherBterminals.
◆ Connecttheshieldsofthecabletogetherateachcontroller.
◆ Connecttheshieldstoanearthgroundonly at one end of the segment;tape
backtheshieldgroundattheotherend.

EOL (End Of Line) Setting

tolocatetheswitchesfortheseseings.
Proceedasfollows:
1. Removethescrewatthecenteroftheinterfacethatsecuresthecoverand
removethecover.
2. Locatetheappropriateswitch(seeIllustration8).
3. IftheRS-485connectionistheEnd-of-Line(onesetofwiresundertheRS-485
terminals),verifythatbothswitchesontheRS-485switchassemblyareinthe
ONposition.Otherwise,theswitchesshouldbeintheOFFposition.
4. Aeryouset/conrmtheswitches,reinstallthecoverandscrew.

Power Connection
Connectthe24VACsupplyvoltage(Class2transformeronly)tothepowerter-
minalsonthelowerlesideofthecontroller.Connect the neutral lead from the
transformer to the GND terminal and the AC phase lead to the ~ (phase) termi-
nal. PowerisappliedtotheKMD-5540whenthetransformerispluggedinandthe
powerjumperisinplace(seeIllustration 1—Controller Components on page 2).
Configuration
PriortooperatingtheKMD-5540,itmustbeconguredusingtheHardwareCon-
gurationManager(HCM)applicationsuppliedwithWinControl.SeetheWin-
ControlXLUser’sManualforadditionalinformation.
Note:
Alldevicesonthesamenetworkmustbeconguredforthesamebaudrate.
Operation
Oncecongured,programmed,andpoweredup,theinterfacerequiresverylile
userintervention.
Controls and Indicators
Thefollowingsectionsdescribethecontrolsandindicatorsfoundonthedevice.
Network ON/OFF
ThenetworkON/OFFswitchislocatedbelowthemodularjackonthelesideof
thecontroller.UsethisswitchtoenableordisabletheRS-485networkconnection.
Alternately,youmayremovetheRS-485terminalblockfromthepinstocomplete-
lyisolatetheKMD-5540fromthenetwork.
Status LEDs
TwostatusLEDsarelocatedonthelesideofthecontrollerabovethepowercon-
nectorterminal.Theyareusedtoindicatethefollowing:
RDY –TheReadyLEDblinksrapidlywheneverthecontrollerisoperatingnor-
mally.YoucanconsiderthisthesameasapowerLED.
COM –TheCommunicationsLEDindicateswhenthecontrolleristransmiing
overtheRS-485networkconnection.
Isolation Lamps
TwoisolationlampsarelocatedneartheNetworkON/OFFswitch.Theselamps
servethreefunctions:

◆ RemovingthelampswillopentheRS-485circuitandisolatetheKMD-5540
fromthenetwork.
◆ Ifoneorbothlampsarelit,itindicatesthenetworkisimproperlyphased.This
meansthatthegroundpotentialoftheKMD-5540isnotthesameasotherde-
vicesonthenetwork
◆ Ifthevoltageorcurrentonthenetworkexceedssafelevels,thelampsoperateas
fusestoprotecttheKMD-5540fromdamage.
Resetting the Controller
IftheKMD-5540appearstobeoperatingincorrectly,orisnotrespondingtocom-
mands,youmayneedtoresetit.
Note
Reseingtheinterfacewillrestorethefactorydefaultconguration.
Itmaybenecessarytore-conguretheKMD-5540withHCMtoestablishnormal
communicationsandoperation.
ToresettheKMD-5540,proceedasfollows.
1. Removethescrewatthecenterofthethecoverandremovethecover.
2. Locatethejumperblocknexttotheinputpull-upswitches(seeIllustration9).
3. RemovepowertotheKMD-5540.
4. PlaceashortontheRSTpins.Useajumperifaspareisavailable.
5. PoweruptheKMD-5540.WaituntiltheRDYLEDbeginstoashnormally.
6. RemovepowertotheKMD-5540.
7. RemovetheshortfromtheRSTjumper.
8. Reinstallthecoverandscrew.
9. PoweruptheKMD-5540andre-congureitifnecessary.
