WARNING: When using this unit, always follow basic precautions, including the following:
DANGER: RISK OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK.
The installation must have Class A
Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupters (GFCI) for
the whirlpool system.
This will provide additional protection against
line-to-ground shock hazard.
Such a GFCI should be provided by the installer and
should be tested on a routine basis.
TotesttheGFCI,pressthetestbutton.TheGFCIshould
interruptpower.Presstheresetbutton.Powershouldbe
restored.
If the GFCI fails to operate in this manner, there is a
ground current flowing or the GFCI is defective. The
possibility of an electric shock may exist. DO NOT use
this unit. Disconnect the unit and have the problem
corrected by a qualified licensed electrician.
For -J1 and -JA models only: Agreencoloredterminal
(or a wire connector marked “G”, “GR”, “GROUND”, or
“Grounding”) is provided within the terminal
compartment. To reduce the risk of electric shock,
connect this terminal or connector to the grounding
terminal of your electric service or supply panel with a
conductor equivalent in size to the circuit conductors
supplying this equipment.
All models: A pressure wire connector is provided on
the exterior of the pump or control box within this unit to
permit connection of a No. 8 AWG (8.4 mm2)solid
copperbondingconductorbetweenthisunitandallother
electricalequipmentandexposedmetalinthevicinity,as
needed to comply with local requirements.
DO NOT operate this unit without the guard on the
suction fitting.
Never drop or insert any object into any opening.
Use this unit only for its intended use as denoted in this
manual. DO NOT use attachments not recommended
by the Kohler Co.

Please read these instructions carefully to familiarize
yourself with the required tools, materials, and
installation sequences. Follow the sections that pertain
toyourparticularinstallation. Thiswillaidyouinavoiding
the unnecessary expense associated with improper
installation. In addition to proper installation, read all
operating and safety instructions.
The variety of installations possible with this bath may
require framing procedures other than those described
in this manual.
All information in this manual is based on the latest
product information available at the time of publication.

B.FACTORY-ASSEMBLED FEATURES
Factory installed components include door seal
compressor system. No installation is needed.
WARNING: Unauthorized modification may
cause unsafe operation and poor performance
of the bath. Do not relocate or make other
modifications, as this could adversely affect the
performance and safe operation of the bath.
Kohler Co. shall not be liable under its warranty or
otherwiseforpersonalinjuryordamagecausedby
any such unauthorized modification.
Use a separate service for the door air compressor.
3. PRODUCT REQUIREMENTS
A. SUMMARY OF KEY REQUIREMENTS
Install unit to level subfloor.
Provide properly dimensioned framing.
Recess installation is recommended.
B. PLUMBING SPECIFICATIONS
If using a rim mounted bath faucet, flexible connections
between the valves and spoutmay be required. Confirm
adequate mounting and connection space of specified
faucet for your installation.
Confirm adequate support for faucet; large faucets that
maybeinadvertentlyusedasameansofsupportarenot
appropriate or safe for this installation.
C. PRODUCT INSPECTION
Carefully uncrate and inspect your product for damage.
Do not remove spacer bar until unit is secured to
stud pocket.
Return bath to carton during construction to prevent
damage.
D. ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS
K-1353-AA, K-1354-AA: The installation must have a
Class A Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter (GFCI). The
GFCI protectsagainst line-to-groundshock hazard.Use
a 120 V, 15 A, 60 Hz separate service for the bath.
Provide a separate equipment grounding conductor for
theinsidegroundinglug.Groundmustnotbeconnected
to any current-carrying conductor except at the main
service breaker box.

4. INSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS

C. CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS
Check roughing-in and room dimensions in order to
provide adequate available space for the bath unit.
D. NEW OR REPLACEMENT INSTALLATION
REQUIREMENTS
This bath unit can be installed in new or existing
bathrooms.
For new installations: Position plumbing according to
roughing-indimensionslocatedonpage4.Capsupplies
and check for leaks.
For replacement installations: Remove old bath,
remove old wall material and remove old floor covering
from area. Remove old plumbing which does not
conform to roughing-in requirements.
5. SITE REQUIREMENTS
A. OLD BATH REMOVAL
Disconnect the drain at the trap. Remove old wall
material. Slip boards under old bath feet to protect
floor and slide old bath out of recess as illustrated.

B. SUBFLOOR PREPARATION
Check flooring under the bath and repair if necessary.
Make sure that the subfloor is level. Seal subfloor to
reduce the risk of water damage.

C. REMOVE APRONS AND INSPECT UNIT
Carefully uncrate and inspect the bath for damage. Do
not remove spacer bar until unit is secured to stud
pocket.
Loosen and remove the screws at the base of the two
aprons. These screws secure the aprons to the pan
base. Save these screws.
Pull bottom of apron away from bath unit and then pull
top down and out from flange in bath rim.
Continue inspection of bath for damage.
Reinstall aprons if unit is not immediately installed.
Return bath to carton during construction to prevent
damage.

D. STUD POCKET PREPARATION
Refer to Roughing-In section beginning on page 4.
Measure the exact outside dimension of the bath from
the two front edges of the nailing flange. This should be
close to 60”. Size the stud pocket accordingly.
NOTE: The stud pocket must fit the width of the unit
exactly.Thebath isshippedwith aspacerbar to pre-
vent spreading or squeezing of the door opening.
This would affect the proper function of the inflat-
able seal.
Construct a recess designed for your particular
installation. Install stud pocket headers.
Construct the required access panel according to
Roughing-In section beginning on page 4.
Design of bath will allow for up to 1/2” of finish floor
materialif thebath isinstalled tothe subfloor. For thicker
flooring, raise bath with plywood underlayment to
compensate. This is necessary to allow clearance for
apron removal.

6. BEFORE INSTALLING UNIT
A. RECOMMENDED INSTALLATION
Illustrated is a recommended installation.
Incorporate framing support for the vertical and
horizontal grab bars, if used. In addition, incorporate
framing support for the hand spray on vertical slide bar,
if used.
Route piping and adapt framing as necessary for the
hand spray supply elbow, pressure-balanced mixer
valve, and high-flow tub filler and valves.

B. PARTIALLY INSTALLBATH DRAIN
Install drain on bath according to manufacturer’s
instructions.
C. PROTECT BATH UNIT
Place a drop cloth or similar material in bath bottom. Be
careful not to scratch product.

7. INSTALL BATH
A. BATH SET-IN
The support base “pan” is integral to the unit.
Ifsubfloorislevel,noadjustmentsarerequired.Setbath
into place, align drain tailpiece with trap, and proceed to
next section.
If subfloor is not level, some levelingof the batharea will
be necessary. Do not support the weight of the bath
by the flange. Do not use drywall plaster as a means
of support.

Shim using shims a minimum size of 6” x 6” with a
maximumspacingof24”.Setbathintopositionandalign
drain tailpiece with trap. Make sure bath is level.

D. SECURE BATH
Secure the nailing flange to the stud pocket header with
screws supplied with unit.
After the unit is secured to the header to prevent
spreading or squeezing of bath walls, remove the
shipping spreader bar. Test operation of door to assure
there is no binding from installation.

8. COMPONENT LOCATION
Familiarize yourself with the location of all major
components before proceeding to field wiring (by a
licensed electrician), suction elbow adjustment, trim kit
installation, and testing and troubleshooting.
This unit uses a compressor assembly to inflate a seal
inthedoor.Thedoorhasabackupgasketontheoutside
for added safety.
A bolt-type latch secures the door. It is released by the
button on top of the door. After the button is depressed,
slight pressure inward should open the door.

9. FIELD WIRE COMPRESSOR
A. SERVICE REQUIREMENTS
The compressor has been prewired at the factory. A
licensed electrician should make a routine service
connection to the field wiring compartment of the
compressor control containing black and white wires
and ground lug.
See Electrical Requirements section on page 5 of
Product Requirements.
WARNING: Risk of electrical shock.A licensed
electrician should make all electrical connections.

Disconnect and lock out power before performing
the following procedures. Refer to Important
Safety Instructions on page 2.
B. IDENTIFY ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS
The model number is printed on a plate at the seat end
of the module.
The model number identifies electrical rating. Electrical
connections for each model vary.
K-1353-AA, K-1354-AA: 60 Hz
C. CONNECT CONTROL - 120 V, 60 HZ
Connect service to the field wiring compartment of the
control box. The 60 Hz model compressor control
contains black and white wires and ground lug.
A 120 V, 15A dedicated circuit is required. Provide a
Class A Ground-Fault Circuit-Interrupter.
Provide a separate equipment grounding conductor for
the inside grounding lug. Ground must not be
connected to any current-carrying conductor except at
the main service breaker box (per National Electrical
Code, Article 250-61-b).

10. TEST DOOR SYSTEM
A. OPERATING SEQUENCE
Tightly close the door. When swinging the door shut, a
clicking sound assures the door is closed and secure.
Check that door latch engages the latch receptor.
Close drain and begin filling bath.
The door seal will inflate automatically after the two
water level sensors inside the bath near the bottom of
the door are covered with water.
Monitor outside of door for any signs of leaks and
continue to fill bath to a water level at least 2” above the
top of the highest jet.
Open drain and allow bath to empty.
Thedoorsealwillautomaticallydeflatewhenwaterlevel
lowers below the water level sensors.

B. TROUBLESHOOT DOOR SYSTEM

should correct all electrical problems. For warranty service, contact your dealer or wholesale distributor.

11. INSTALL APRONS
Locate the screws removed during bath inspection.
This apron system is designed to have the finished wall
materials go over the apron columns. It is also designed
to have the finished floor materials butt up against the
pan base.
Slip the top of an apron up into the channel groove. Tilt
the apron inward. Align the bottom of the apron with the
pan base. The apron should align with both the bath rim
and the edges of the apron columns, and with the
predrilled holes in the pan base.
Secure the apron to the pan base with screws.

12. INSTALL FINISH WALL
Protect the inside of the bath to prevent damage.
Construction damage is not covered under
warranty!
NOTICE: Before covering the framing, perform the
following: Open hot and cold valves and check all
supplyconnectionsforleaks. Fillthebathtotheoverflow
and check overflow and drain connections for leaks.
Protect bath surface. Cover framing and walls with
gypsumwallboard. Tapeandmuddrywall...sealdrywall
and joints under bath rim. Install finished wall material
tosubwall. Sealjointsbetweenthebathrimandfinished
wall using silicone sealant.

13. INSTALL KICK STRIP
NOTE: Install kick strip after the finished flooring is
installed.
With the paper backingstill attached, placethe kick strip
along the outline of the bath base.
Beginatoneendandpeelbackafewinchesofthepaper
backing from the kick strip.
Align end of kick strip to finished wall and bottom of bath
base. Lightly press kick strip to bath base.
Peeling back a few inches of paper backing at a time,
continue aligning and pressing kick strip to bath base.
After kick strip is completely applied, go over its entire
length with firm pressure to secure kick strip to bath

14. CLEAN-UP AFTER INSTALLATION
Donotuseabrasive cleanersastheymayscratchand
dull the unit surface. Use warm water and a liquid
detergent to clean the surface. See the owner’smanual
for additional information on cleaning.
Stubborn stains, paint, or tar on the remainder of the
bath(notdoorand seat) can beremovedwithturpentine
or paint thinner. Do not allow cleaners containing
petroleum distillates to remain in contact with bath
surfaces for long periods of time. Plaster can be
removed by scraping with a wood edge. Do not use
metal scrapers, wire brushes, or other metal tools. One
of the powder-type detergents may be used on a damp
cloth to provide mild abrasive action to the residual
plaster.
