Introduction Definition of Terms
Thankyoufor yourpurchaseof the Krell Playback
System28c. The KPS28c’s transport design
eliminates error-producing wobbleanddelivers
exceptionaltracking andfocusaccuracy,regard-
less of environmentor disccharacteristics.Digital
circuitry providesultra-highsignal resolutionand
direct coupledanalogcircuitry assuressuperior
low-frequencyperformance,with low distortion,
wide bandwidth, and minimal negative feed-
backs.TheKPS28ccan beseamlesslyintegrat-
edinto a hometheater or whole-houseaudio sys-
tem,andthe remotecontrol providesfor the con-
venientoperationof the KPS28cas well as other
Krell components.
This owner’sreference manualcontains impor-
tant information onplacement,installation, and
operation of your KPS28c. Please read this
information carefully. Athoroughunderstanding
of these details will help ensuresatisfactory
operation and long life for your KPS28cand
related systemcomponents.
Followingare the definitions of keytermsused
in your owner’sreference manual.
CONNECTIONS
Bridging. Aninternal connection option that
links twoamplifier channelsto operateas one
combinedamplifier channel, greatly increasing
the channel’s poweroutput.
Krell Multi AmpThroughput(MAT). A propri-
etary internal connectionoption that sendsthe
samemusic signal to all amplifier channels
using one balanced or single-ended connec-
tion. MATreducesinstallation complexity and
cabling requirements in systemscontaining
multipleamplifiers.
INPUTS ANDOUTPUTS
Balanced.Asymmetricalinput circuit that has
equalimpedancefromboth input terminals with
respect to a commonreference point. Balanced
connections have6 dB moregain than single-
endedconnections.
Single-ended. Aninput circuit in which one
sideof a transmissionline circuit is ungrounded.
Single-endedconnections have6 dBless gain
than balancedconnections.
OPERATION
Off. Whenthe powerbutton onthe front panel
is pressedand the blue powerLEDturns off,
the componentis off.
Operational Mode.Whenthe powerbutton on
the front panel is pressedandthe blue power
LEDilluminates, the componentis in opera-
tional modeandreadyto play music.

Revolutionary Krell CAST
Technology
Current Audio Signal Transmission, .termed
CAST,is a revolutionary methodof connecting
analog audio componentsfor unparalleled
sonic performance. Innovative engineering
combinesthe newKrell CASTcircuitry with
existing Krell CurrentModetechnologyto cre-
ate entire CASTsystemsthat reproduce music
with incredible range,tonality, andprecision.
Voltage Signal Transmissionandthe
Traditional AudioSystem
Traditionally, signal is transmittedin the voltage
domainbetweentwo components.In an audio
system,eachcomponentis a discrete entity with
uniquecharacteristics that act uponthe musical
signal independently. Each component is
unawareof the other componentsin the system.
Thecables that connect the componentseach
havetheir ownelectrical characteristics, which
affect the sonicpresentationof the entire system.
CAST: A NewApproach
CASTcircuitry recognizessignal transmitted in
the current domain instead of the voltage
domainbetweeneach component.CASTtrans-
mission unifies the individual componentsand
their interconnectsinto an electrically linked
whole.Thesonic presentationof the entire sys-
temremainsintact.
CASTBasics
Here’s how a CASTaudio system works.
Internally, each CASTsource transfers, or
amplifies, current usingKrell CurrentModecir-
cuitry. This current signal is then output using
CASTcircuitry. Whenthe signal is received by
a CASTinput, Krell Current Modecircuitry
again takes over until the signal reachesthe
loudspeaker.Bymaintainingthe musicalsignal
in the current domainfrombeginningto end, an
entire CASTsystembehavesas if it is onecom-
ponent.WithCAST,anomaliesof signal transmis-
sion betweencomponentsare eliminated. Cable
impedancesandtheir effects onthe transmitted
signal arenon-existent.
HowCASTand Krell Current ModeInteract
While CASTis a newmethodof transferring the
musical signal betweencomponents,its origin
stemsfrom Krell Current Mode,the technology
developedto transfer the musicalsignal within
a component. CASTcombined with Krell
Current Modetakes circuitry signal transmis-
sion to the nextevolutionarylevel. In essence,
Krell CurrentModemaintainsthe integrity of the
signal within the componentand CASTpre-
serves the transmitted signal betweencompo-
nents. Together, CASTandKrell Current Mode
technologies unify separate Krell components
into asingleglobalcircuit.
CASTCable Construction
A CASTsystem uses cables manufactured by
Krell and other manufacturers specially
licensedby Krell. Thinandflexible CASTcables
are constructedwith the samebuild quality as
other Krell products and are aesthetically
matchedto the componentsthat Kreil manufac-
tures. Anall-metal bodyandlocking connectors
with gold contactsare part of the standardno-
compromisespecification developedfor every
CASTcable made.
The Best Musical Performance
Whenyou operate a CASTsystem, you will
hear significant improvementsin every perfor-
mancearea: speed, precision, dynamicrange,
depth andwidth of the soundstage, transient
impact, tonal balance,harmonicdistortion, and
more. Thegoal for CASTis the samecompany
goalusedfor all Krell products.Krell strives for
the delivery of the best performanceof a musi-
cal eventfor you, using the full expressionof
technologyto date.
