Propane gas and natural gas have man-made odor-
ants added specifically for detection of fuel gas leaks.
If a gas leak occurs, you should be able to smell the
fuel gas .
THAT’S YOUR SIGNAL TO GO INTO IMMEDIATE
ACTION!
■Do not take any action that could ignite the fuel
gas. Do not operate any electrical switches. Do not
pull any power supply or extension cords. Do not
light matches or any other source of flame. Do not
use your telephone.
■Get everyone out of the building and away from the
area immediately.
■Close all propane gas tank or cylinder fuel supply
valves, or the main fuel supply valve located at the
meter if you use natural gas.
■Propane gas is heavier than air and may settle in
low areas. When you have reason to suspect a
propane leak, keep out of all low areas.
■Use your neighbor’s phone and call your fuel gas-
supplier and your fire department. Do not re-enter
the building or area.
■Stay out of the building and away from the area
until declared safe by the firefighters and your fuel
gas supplier.
■FINALLY, let the fuel gas service person and the
firefighters check for escaped gas. Have them
air out the building and area before you return.
Properly trained service people must repair the
leak, check for further leakages, and then relight
the appliance for you.
■Some people cannot smell well. Some people
cannot smell the odor of the man-made chemi-
cal added to propane or natural gas. You must
determine if you can smell the odorant in these
fuel gases.
■Learn to recognize the odor of propane gas and
natural gas. Local propane gas dealers and your
local natural gas supplier (utility) will be more than
happy to give you a “scratch and sniff” pamphlet.
Use it to become familiar with the fuel gas odor.
■Smoking can decrease your ability to smell. Being
around an odor for a period of time can affect your
sensitivity to that particular odor. Odors present in
animal confinement buildings can mask fuel gas
odor.
■The odorant in propane gas and natural gas is col-
orless and the intensity of its odor can fade under
some circumstances.
■If there is an underground leak, the movement of
gas through the soil can filter the odorant.
■Propane gas odor may differ in intensity at different
levels. Since propane gas is heavier than air, there
may be more odor at lower levels.
■Always be sensitive to the slightest gas odor. If you
continue to detect any gas odor, no matter how
small, treat it as a serious leak. Immediately go into
action as discussed previously.

WARNING
Asphyxiation Hazard
■Do not use this radiant heater for heating human living quarters.
■Do not use in unventilated areas.
■The flow of combustion and ventilation air must not be obstructed.
■Proper ventilation air must be provided to support the combustion air requirements of the heater
being used.
■Refer to the specification section of the Owner’s Manual, heater’s dataplate, or contact the LB
White Company to determine combustion air ventilation requirements of the heater.
■Lack of proper ventilation air will lead to improper combustion.
■Improper combustion can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning in humans leading to serious injury
or death. Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning can include headaches, dizziness and difficulty
in breathing.
■Symptoms of improper combustion affecting livestock can be disease, lower feed conversion,
or death.

■Propane gas and natural gas have a distinctive
odor. Learn to recognize these odors. (Reference
“Fuel Gas Odor” and “Odor Fading” sections
above.
■If you have not been properly trained in repair and
service of propane gas and natural gas fueled
heaters, then do not attempt to light the heater,
perform service or repairs, or make any adjust-
ments to the heater on a propane gas or natural
gas fuel system.
■Even if you are not properly trained in the service
and repair of radiant heaters, ALWAYS be con-
sciously aware of the odors of propane gas and
natural gas.
■A periodic “sniff test” around the heater or at the
heater’s joints; i.e. hose, connections, etc., is a
good safety practice under any conditions. If you
smell even a small amount of gas, CONTACT
YOUR FUEL GAS SUPPLIER IMMEDIATELY. DO
NOT WAIT!

■Check the area surrounding the heater to
ensure it is clear and free of combustible ma-
terials, gasoline, and other flammable vapors
and liquids.
■Have your gas supplier check all gas connec-
tions for leaks or restrictions in gas lines.
■Inspect the gas regulator vent to make sure
its vent is not blocked. Debris, insects, insect
nests, snow, or ice on a regulator can block
vents and cause excess pressure at the heater.
■Check the hose assembly after heater installa-
tion, relocation and before the heater is put into
use. Ensure proper positioning. (See Fig.2).
■Ensure the hose is not cut, or if there is exces-
sive abrasion or wear. If so, it must be replaced
prior to the heater being put into operation.
■Check overall condition of the heater for
cracked, damaged, rusted or corroded compo-
nents, loose screws or bolts, etc. Replace any
suspect components immediately.
■For safety as well as for optimum performance
of the heater, it is necessary to keep the inside
and the outside of the heater free of dust, dirt,
or any combustible material.
■Review all heater labels at the time of main-
tenance for legibility. Make sure none are cut,
torn, or otherwise damaged. Any damaged
labels must be replaced immediately by con-
tacting the L.B. White Co., Inc.
ANNUALLY:
■Regulators can wear out and function improp-
erly. Have your gas supplier check the date
codes on all regulators installed and check
delivery pressures to the heater to make sure
that the regulator is reliable.
Service Instructions
1. Close the fuel supply valve to the heater unless it is
necessary to have the valve open for services.
2. In servicing some components, it may be
necessary to remove the gas hose, or filter.
3. For reassembly, reverse the respective service proce-
dure. Ensure gas connections are tightened securely.
4. After servicing, light the heater to ensure proper opera-
tion and check for gas leaks.
5. Clean the heater’s orifice with compressed air or a soft,
dry rag. Do not use files, drills, broaches, etc. to clean
the orifice hole. Doing so will enlarge the hole, causing
combustion or ignition problems. Replace the orifice if it
cannot be cleaned properly.
WARNING

Burner Orifice
Orifice size is stamped on one of the flats of the orifice
hex. This number indicates size in millimeters.
LP orifice: part number 570094, 63 (0.63 mm)
NG orifice: part number 570095, 79 (0.79mm)
To access the burner orifice:
1. Remove the following:
a. Thermocouple from the safety control valve.
b. Screw and washer from top of air housing
2. Use a 6 mm nut driver to remove the orifice from inside
the air housing.
3. If the orifice is blocked by dirt, clean with compressed
air. If it cannot be cleaned with air, replace the orifice.
DO NOT use tip cleaners, broaches, or small drills
as the hole may be enlarged, creating an overheat
problem.
Safety control valve
The valve contains an electromagnet that receives cur-
rent supplied by the thermocouple when the thermo-
couple is heated.
The current keeps the magnet engaged when you
depress the button on the valve, thereby providing gas
to the emitter. If the magnet internal to the valve is defec-
tive, the heater will light but not stay lit when the button is
released. To replace the safety control valve, refer to the
following procedures and Fig. 12:
Remove screw, washer, and thermocople
Orifice
a. Remove hose and filter from the air housing.
b. Remove thermocouple from safety control valve.
c. When replacing, apply pipe thread compound (in-
cluded with replacement) to 1/8 in. threads of safety
control.
Thermocouple
This works with the safety control valve by supplying direct
current to the valve’s magnet when the thermocouple tip is
heated. The thermocouple is positioned at the emitter.
To remove the thermocouple, refer to the following and
Fig. 13.
1. Loosen the thermocouple connector nut at the safety
control valve.
2. Loosen the thermocouple’s nut closest to the emitter
while guiding the thermocouple back through the
bracket’s hole. Pull the thermocouple from its bracket.
3. When installing the replacement, thread a retaining nut
1 inch from end of thermocouple body. Feed the ther-
mocouple tip partially through the bracket’s hole while
threading on the remaining nut. Tighten both mounting
nuts to the thermocouple mounting bracket.

■Testing the thermocouple:
- Remove the thermocouple from the heater.
- Connect an ohm meter between the thermo-
couple contact nut and tip.
- A reading of less than 1 ohm when the thermo-
couple is cool is acceptable.
■Readings showing overload or infinite resistance
indicate a defective thermocouple.
Gas Pressure Checks
A.Initial preparation
1. Ensure the proper fuel and gas pressure is
supplied before starting this procedure. LPG and
Natural gas pressure must be 5 PSIG
2. Obtain a high- pressure gas gauge kit capable
of reading up to 10 PSIG or order kit number
500-20736.
3. Close the fuel supply valve for all heaters in the
heat zone.
B.Pressure Gauge Installation
1. At the heater furthest away from the zone control
panel or gas supply, brush or blow off any dust and
dirt on the heater’s gas hose connection at the gas
supply line.
2. Disconnect the heater’s gas hose at this junction.
3. Connect the pressure test kit between the gas
supply and the inlet of the heater’s gas hose.
Ensure both shut-off valves on the kit are in the
closed position when connecting the kit to the
heater.
C.Checking Pressures
1. Open the fuel supply valve to all heaters in the zone,
and the fuel supply valve on the test kit as shown
in Fig. 14.
2. Light all heaters in the zone.
3. With all heaters in the zone operating at full heat
output, the pressure gauge should read 5 PSIG.
4. Is the pressure 5 PSIG? If yes, the no further
checking is required and proceed to Section D.
If the pressure is not 5PSIG, then the regulator
controlling gas pressure to the heaters requires
adjustment, or the gas line needs to be checked for
proper sizing.
D.Completion
1. Once gas pressure has been confirmed, close the
fuel supply valves to the heaters and allow the heat-
ers to burn off any gas remaining in the gas line.
2. Remove the gauge kit from the heater’s gas supply
line and reconnect its gas supply hose.
3. Open the fuel supply valve and light all brooders.
