Like8leadsteppingmotors,6leadmotorshavetwoconfigurationsavailableforhighspeedorhightorqueoperation.
Thehigherspeedconfiguration,orhalfcoil,issodescribedbecauseit usesonehalfofthemotor sinductorwindings.
Thehighertorqueconfiguration,orfull coil,usesthefull windingsofthephases.
HalfCoil Configurations
Aspreviouslystated,thehalfcoil configurationuses50%ofthemotorphasewindings.Thisgiveslowerinductance,
hence, lowertorqueoutput. Liketheparallelconnectionof8 leadmotor, thetorqueoutputwill bemorestableathigher
speeds.Thisconfigurationisalsoreferredtoashalfchopper.Insettingthedriveroutputcurrentmultiplythespecified
perphase(orunipolar) currentratingby1.4 todeterminethepeakoutputcurrent.

Full Coil Configurations
Thefull coil configurationonasixleadmotorshouldbeusedinapplicationswherehighertorqueatlowerspeedsis
desired.Thisconfigurationisalsoreferredtoasfullcopper.Infull coil mode,themotorsshouldberunatonly70%of
theirratedcurrenttopreventoverheating.

Becausethisconfiguration hasthemostinductance,theperformance will starttodegradeathigherspeeds.Inseries
mode, themotorsshouldalsoberun atonly70%oftheirratedcurrenttopreventoverheating.

An8leadmotorinaparallelconfigurationoffersamorestable,butlowertorqueatlowerspeeds.Butbecauseofthe
lowerinductance,therewillbehighertorqueathigherspeeds.Multiplytheperphase(orunipolar) currentratingby
1.96, orthebipolarcurrentratingby1.4, todeterminethepeakoutputcurrent.

6. PowerSupplySelection
TheDM542 canmatchmediumandsmall sizesteppingmotors(fromNEMAframesize 17 to34)madebyLeadshine
orothermotormanufacturesaroundtheworld.Toachievegooddrivingperformances,it isimportanttoselectsupply
voltageandoutputcurrentproperly.Generallyspeaking,supplyvoltagedeterminesthehighspeedperformanceofthe
motor,whileoutputcurrentdeterminestheoutputtorqueofthedrivenmotor(particularlyatlowerspeed).Higher
supplyvoltagewill allowhighermotorspeedtobeachieved,atthepriceofmorenoiseand heating.Ifthemotion
speedrequirementislow, it sbettertouselowersupplyvoltagetodecreasenoise, heatingandimprovereliability.
RegulatedorUnregulatedPowerSupply
Bothregulatedand unregulatedpowersuppliescanbeusedtosupplythedriver.However,unregulatedpowersupplies
arepreferredduetotheirabilitytowithstand currentsurge.If regulatedpowersupplies(suchasmostswitching
supplies.)areindeedused,it isimportanttohavelargecurrentoutputratingtoavoidproblemslikecurrentclamp,for
exampleusing4Asupplyfor3Amotor-driveroperation.Ontheotherhand,ifunregulatedsupplyisused,onemayuse
apowersupplyoflowercurrentratingthanthatofmotor(typically50%～70%ofmotorcurrent).Thereasonisthat
thedriverdrawscurrentfromthepowersupplycapacitoroftheunregulatedsupplyonlyduringtheON durationofthe
PWMcycle,butnotduringtheOFF duration.Therefore,theaveragecurrentwithdrawnfrompowersupplyis
considerablyless thanmotorcurrent.Forexample,two3Amotorscanbewell suppliedbyonepowersupplyof4A
rating.
MultipleDrivers
Itisrecommendedtohavemultipledriverstoshareonepowersupplytoreducecost, ifthesupplyhasenoughcapacity.
Toavoidcross interference,DO NOTdaisy-chainthepowersupplyinputpinsofthedrivers.(Instead,pleaseconnect
themtopowersupplyseparately.)

Selecting Supply Voltage
ThepowerMOSFETSinsidetheDM542 canactuallyoperatewithin+20 ~+50VDC,includingpowerinput
fluctuation andbackEMFvoltagegeneratedbymotorcoilsduringmotorshaftdeceleration.Highersupplyvoltagecan
increasemotortorqueathigherspeeds,thushelpfulforavoidinglosingsteps.However,highervoltagemaycause
biggermotorvibrationatlowerspeed,andit mayalsocauseover-voltageprotectionorevendriverdamage.Therefore,
it issuggestedtochooseonlysufficientlyhighsupplyvoltageforintendedapplications,andit issuggestedtouse
powersupplieswiththeoreticaloutputvoltageof+20 ~+45VDC, leavingroomforpowerfluctuationandback-EMF.

Thisdriverusesan8-bit DIPswitchtosetmicrostepresolution, andmotoroperatingcurrent, asshownbelow:

CurrentSettings
Foragivenmotor,higherdrivercurrentwill makethemotortooutputmoretorque,butatthesametimecausesmore
heatinginthemotoranddriver. Therefore, outputcurrentisgenerallysettobesuchthatthemotorwill notoverheatfor
longtimeoperation.Sinceparalleland serialconnectionsofmotorcoilswill significantlychangeresultinginductance
and resistance,itisthereforeimportanttosetdriveroutputcurrentdependingonmotorphasecurrent,motorleadsand

connectionmethods.Phasecurrentrating suppliedbymotormanufacturerisimportantinselectingdrivercurrent,
howevertheselection alsodependsonleadsandconnections.
Thefirstthree bits(SW1, 2, 3)oftheDIPswitchareusedtosetthedynamiccurrent.Selectasettingclosesttoyour
motor srequiredcurrent.

Thecurrentautomaticallyreduced to50%oftheselecteddynamiccurrentonesecondafterthelastpulse.Theoretically,
thiswillreduce motorheatingto36%(duetoP=I2*R)oftheoriginalvalue.Iftheapplicationneedsadifferent
standstill current,pleasecontactLeadshine.

Togettheoptimized performance, switchSW4 twotimesinonesecond toidentifythemotorparameterafterpower-up
ifit isthefirsttimeinstallation.Themotorparameterisidentifiedandthedrive scurrentloopparametersare
calculatedautomaticallywhenSW4isactivated.Themotorshaftwill havealittlevibrationduringauto-configuration.
If theuserchangesthemotororthepowersupply, don tforgettotoggleSW4 once again.
AutoTuning Requirementand Procedure:
1. Motorisconnectedtodrive.

3. Turnonthepower.
4. Makesurethereisnopulseappliedtodrive.

8. Wiring Notes
lInordertoimproveanti-interference performance ofthedriver, it isrecommendedtousetwistedpairshieldcable.
lTopreventnoiseincurredinPUL/DIRsignal,pulse/directionsignalwiresandmotorwiresshouldnotbetiedup
together.Itisbettertoseparatethembyatleast10 cm,otherwisethedisturbingsignalsgeneratedbymotorwill
easilydisturb pulsedirectionsignals, causingmotorpositionerror, systeminstabilityandotherfailures.
lIfapowersupplyservesseveraldrivers,separatelyconnecting thedriversisrecommendedinsteadof
daisy-chaining.
lItisprohibitedtopull andplugconnectorP2whilethedriverispoweredON,becausethereishighcurrent
flowingthroughmotorcoils(evenwhenmotorisatstandstill).Pulling orpluggingconnectorP2withpoweron
will causeextremelyhighback-EMFvoltagesurge,whichmaydamagethedriver.

Acompletestepping systemshouldincludesteppingmotor,stepping driver,powersupplyand controller(pulse

TwelveMonthLimitedWarranty
LeadshineTechnologyCo., Ltd.warrantsitsproductsagainstdefectsinmaterialsand workmanshipforaperiodof12 monthsfrom
shipment outoffactory.Duringthewarrantyperiod,Leadshinewilleither,atitsoption,repairorreplaceproductswhichprovedtobe
defective.
Exclusions
Theabovewarrantydoesnotextendtoanyproductdamagedbyreasonsofimproperorinadequatehandlingsbycustomer,improperor
inadequatecustomerwirings,unauthorizedmodificationormisuse,oroperation beyond theelectricalspecificationsoftheproductand/or
operationbeyond environmentalspecificationsfortheproduct.
ObtainingWarranty Service
Toobtainwarrantyservice,areturnedmaterialauthorizationnumber(RMA)mustbeobtainedfromcustomerserviceate-mail:
