Introduction Leica Geosystems GKL24 User Manual-1.0.0en

Introduction
The Leica Geosystems GKL24 Dual Bay Battery Charger
is an intelligent charger employing advanced charging
technology. It is suitable for charging Leica Geosystems
GEB90 batteries not only from the mains supply but also in
a vehicle, and represents an optimal complement to your
battery-operated Leica Geosystems instrument.
Up to two batteries may be connected to the charger. The
type of cell technology used in the battery (Li-Ion) is imma-
terial because the microprocessor-controlled charger
recognises the type of battery which has been connected,
and its state of charge, and deduces from this charging
parameters such as charging current and charging algo-
rithm.
The batteries are charged as quickly and reliably as
possible one after the other (sequentially) in the order they
are connected, and so hold their charge for a long time.
The charging time depends primarily on the maximum
charging current, the battery capacity and its state of
charge on insertion / connection (see "Technical Data").
Only Leica Geosystems Li-Ion batteries with 3-pin charger
plugs are charged quickly.
)The charger is only suitable for charging original
Leica Geosystems GEB90 batteries.

Operation
Connecting the charger
WARNING:
Use the charger only indoors, in dry rooms. Units
which have become wet and contain condensed air
must not be used.
)During the charging process avoid fast increasing of
ambient temperature.
Before using the product for the first time, ensure that it is
standing firmly or attach it so that it is not possible to
change the position of the unit unintentionally. Connect the
unit to the mains supply either with the mains cable
supplied or if using in a vehicle with the vehicle's electrical
system by using the vehicle cable supplied.
)For a safe separation from mains and if the charger
is not used for a longer period, the plug of the mains
cable and the plug of the vehicle cable must be
disconnected.
Supplementations
)Pay attention to the correct polarity of the cigarette
lighter when using older motor vehicles (+ pole on
centre contact).
In case of a wrong polarity the fuse of the charger
must be replaced by a field technician.
)For supply of charger via vehicle connector only use
vehicle on-board supply systems.
In case of power supply via other systems (e.g.
current-limiting power supply units) malfunctions
could be the result.

Operation

Connecting batteries
Leica Geosystems GEB90 batteries have three contact
surfaces. The charger can differentiate between empty,
partly loaded and full batteries and adapt the charging
procedure accordingly.
WARNING:
For safety reasons, only Leica Geosystems GEB90
batteries may be connected.
Battery charging
1. Connect charger.
2. Connect battery.
3. Ensure that the charging lamp is showing a solid yellow
light. The battery is now being charged. If the battery
lamp gives another signal after the battery has been
connected, see "Illuminated Display".
4. The battery is 80 % charged when the charging lamp
flashes green, when battery lamp is showing solid
green the battery is fully loaded. (for charge time ref. to
"Technical Data"; eg. for GEB90 after 2.5 h to 3.5 h)
5. The battery can now be removed for use or it may
remain connected so that it is available when required.
Determining charging sequence
If more than one battery is connected to the charger, they
are charged in the order that they have been connected.
For this reason, connect the battery that is most urgently
needed so that it has priority for charging.

10
Conservation of charge
If batteries which have been connected are fully charged,
they may remain connected. Conservation of charge takes
place in sequence so that the battery self-discharge which
takes place for technical reasons, is compensated and the
batteries are always available for use with their full
capacity.

Problems
)If the charger displays a malfunction while a battery
is connected, it is best to connect another battery for
a short period to determine whether the fault is in the
battery or in the charger. If the problem cannot be
rectified, please contact the service workshop.
Please also check:
• Is the cable making a firm contact?
Replace the cable if necessary.
• Has the vehicle's electrical system sufficient energy
(voltage, fuse in vehicle cable, battery charge)
• Is voltage supplied to the mains socket?
Tips
)Let batteries in the instrument run down as far as
possible.
• Batteries should always be charged in a vehicle while
the motor is running.
• In order to utilise the battery's capacity to the full, new
batteries should be fully charged and discharged three
to five times.
)During the charging process avoid fast increasing of
ambient temperature, eg. by exposure to sunlight of
chargers and batteries.
Fast increasing of ambient temperature could result
in an early end of charging with reduced battery
capacity.

Care and Storage Leica Geosystems GKL24 User Manual-1.0.0en
12
Care and Storage
The charger basically needs no maintenance.
• Always keep the charger in a dry place.
• Keep to the specified storage temperature range (see
”Technical Data”).
• Keep cables, plugs or contacts clean and dry. Blow out
any dirt lodged in the plugs or contacts.
• When dispatching or transporting the charger, always
use the original Leica Geosystems packaging.
)Temperature limits
When storing the equipment, particularly in summer
and inside a vehicle, take the storage temperature
limits (-40°C to +70°C / -40°F to +158°F) into
account.
)Damp products must be unpacked. Dry the product,
the case, the foam inserts and the accessories at not
more than 40°C / 108°F and clean them. Do not
repack until everything is completely dry.
