PREFACE
This Operator’s Manual is meant for personnel that are
operating the machine and are responsible for its daily
maintenance.
Kindly read this manual fully prior to starting work.
Such instructions as are related to your safety and/or that of
others are marked in the margin by a warning triangle with
exclamation mark. These instructions should be observed
with particular care and attention.
Instructions which may lead to serious material damage in
case of non-compliance or incorrect use are marked in the
margin by an exclamation mark.
The machine described in this manual may contain compo-
nents which do not form part of the standard equipment but
are available as optional extras. This is not made clear in all
cases, because standard specifications may differ from
country to country.
Furthermore, machines and optional extras may be adjusted
to specific regional conditions whilst they are also subject to
permanent research and innovation. For this reason, the
specifications of your machine may not be consistent with the
pictures in this manual.
WARRANTY CONDITIONS
For those parts which fail in normal operating conditions the
factory will make replacement parts available, free of charge,
for a period of 6 (six) months from the date of purchase.
Warranty shall not apply if the instructions mentioned in this
manual have not been met, or if they have not been met
completely or correctly. Neither shall warranty apply in case
of modification of the machine by you or third parties
without our foreknowledge and/or authorisation.

The machine identification plate is fitted to the main chassis,
to the left side of the hopper.
In case of correspondence and ordering of spare parts, kindly
state the type- and serial number of your machine. Complete

SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
- Use the machine only for the purpose for which it was
designed.
- Follow all prevailing safety regulations, including those
laid down in this manual and occurring on the machine.
- Operate this machine in a safe way.
- The machine should be operated by authorised persons
only.
- Be alert and observe all safety precautions.
- Make sure that all safety guards and protection devices are
in place.
- Keep out of reach of moving parts.
- Stop engine, PTO and moving parts before adjusting,
cleaning or lubricating the machine.
- Take care that nobody will be within the dangerous zone
while the machine is in operation and be sure that people
are kept well away from the machine. This is especially
important when working along roads and near or on fields
that are accessible to the public.
- Use always a tractor with a cab.
- Clear the field of objects that could be thrown up by the
machine.
- Observe the prevailing legislation for public road transport.
- Use flashing lights or other safety signs, when required.
- Don’t stand on the machine.
- Use genuine Lely parts only.
- Remove the pressure from hydraulic systems before
starting work on them and/or before coupling/uncoupling
hydraulic hoses.
- Use protective clothing, gloves and/or safety glasses if
required.
- Clean the safety decals regularly so that they can be read at
all times.

EXPLANATION OF SAFETY DECALS ON THE
MACHINE
• Carefully read operator’s manual before handling the
machine. Observe instructions and safety rules when
operating.
• Never exceed the maximum PTO speed which is obligatort
for the machine.
• Adjust the ball valve of the marker control to the closed
(TRANSPORT) position if the machine needs to be
transported.
• If you need to hoist the machine, only use such hoisting
points as are indicated by means of decals.
• Danger of rotating parts! Read the operating instruction of
the PTO shaft. Never work with a PTO shaft without
protection.
• Do not ride on the machine.
• Attention: marker may come down. Maintain a safe
distance.

1 INTRODUCTION
The POLYMAT W is a pneumatic drill capable of applying
most seeds with diameters ranging from 1 to 10 mm.
The PTO-driven fan A (fig. 1) causes a flow of air which
transports the seeds towards the coulters E.
The metering device B at the bottom of the elevation column
C ensures that the seeds are taken up by the air flow.
Because of the whirls in the air flow, generated in the
corrugated part of the elevation column, the seeds are
distributed evenly among the hose connections of the
distributor D. Thus an effective seed distribution across the
entire working width is ensured, even when drilling on a
sloping plot.
The cell wheel F of the metering device is actuated by a
ground-driven metering wheel G which implies that seed
metering is not dependent on forward speed. This is an
advantage, particularly on sloping fields where it is not
always possible to operate at a constant speed.
The POLYMAT W can be operated either with a
LELYTERRA Power Harrow or as an individual machine.
The POLYMAT W is equipped with two land wheels (fig. 2)
enabling the machine to follow ground contours
independently of the LELYTERRA or tractor.
The POLYMAT W rests on its land wheels rather than on the
LELYTERRA which ensures a consistent working depth
whilst avoiding overload of the machine. It is therefore
possible to operate with a lighter and/or smaller roller than
would be the case for combinations whereby the seed drill is
supported by the power harrow. Moreover, the risk of
clogging of the roller is reduced considerably, particularly in
moist conditions.
Thanks to a combined hydraulic control, only one valve has
to be used for lifting and lowering the markers and coulters.
The operation of the hydraulic system is such that, after every
valve control, the LH and RH markers are lowered
alternately. In addition to this, the markers can be controlled
individually by means of a second hydraulic connection. This
makes it possible to lift a marker in order to avoid an obstacle
without interfering with the operation of the POLYMAT.
If a tramline system is used, its rhythm is not interrrupted.

2 ADJUSTMENT FOR OPERATION
The POLYMAT W can be coupled behind a LELYTERRA or
directly behind a tractor.
The LELYTERRA needs to be fitted with the correct linkage
parts. See supplement C for the assembly and adjustment of
the linkage kit.
For individual operations of the POLYMAT, a special solo
hitch has to be fitted (see supplement C).
The position of the coulter beam in respect of the
POLYMAT’s main chassis is adjustable. This makes it
possible to set the coulter beam as shortly as possible behind
the LELYTERRA with any type of depth control roller for the
power harrow.
The position of the coulter beam can be adjusted as follows.
- Raise the POLYMAT until its wheels are only just clear of
the ground.
- Suspend a side frame A (fig. 3) in a hoist.
- Untighten the bolts of both side frames.
- Immobilize the side frames in a position whereby the
coulter beam remains clear of the LELYTERRA (a few
cm).
According to this method, the adjustment can be changed in
steps of 6 cm. When the free space between the coulter beam
and LELYTERRA amounts to something between 5 and 7,5
cm, the distance can be reduced by fitting the coupler arms
(fig. 4) and the lynch pin - use hole . This assembly allows
the side frames to be positioned 1 step further to the front.
- Secure the chain casing of the metering wheel in any of the
positions I, II or III (fig. 3), in accordance with the position
of the side frames.
- Adjust the length of the spindle for coulter pressure setting
A (fig. 5) by means of the adjustment tube B and bolt
M6x35. Use the lowest hole if the lateral frames are fitted
in the rearmost position. If not, shift the bolt 1 position
upwards for each step by which the lateral frames are fitted
farther to the front.
- Make sure that the hoses always run downwards from the
hopper towards the coulters.
When the coulter beam has a forward position, those hoses
that are sagging need to be shortened.
(Shortening to be done only if adjustment of the coulter
beam to the rear is not likely.)

3 MOUNTING THE POLYMAT
Make sure that the POLYMAT is always coupled to the
LELYTERRA or tractor before proceeding to a hopper refill.
3.1 Mounting behind a LELYTERRA
- Remove the rubber gasket disc from the protection cover
for the LELYTERRA PTO extension.
- Pull the locking pins A (fig. 6) back.
Make sure that there are no human beings on either
POLYMAT or LELYTERRA.
- Manoeuver the LELYTERRA in front of the POLYMAT.
- Lift the LELYTERRA until the linkage pins mesh with the
coupler arms.
If the space between the coulter beam and the LELYTERRA
is insufficient for mounting the POLYMAT, the coulter beam
has to be moved to the rear. (see chapter 2)
- Secure the linkage pins by means of the locking pins A (fig.
6).
- Check the PTO shaft for easy telescoping.
- Mount the PTO shaft on the PTO extension.
- Fit the safety chain of the PTO guard to a rigid part of the
LELYTERRA.
- Lift the LELYTERRA until the POLYMAT’s parking jacks
are just clear of the ground.
- Remove the parking jacks.
- Lower the LELYTERRA until the POLYMAT is in a
horizontal position (fig. 7).
- Mount the top link in the lowermost hole of the LELY-
TERRA headstock by means of a top link pin.
- Check if the ball valve (fig. 8) is closed (TRANSPORT
position).
- Connect the two hydraulic hoses (marked in white) of the
combined marker/coulter beam control with a double
acting spool valve (including a floating position) on the
tractor.
- Connect -if required*- the two hydraulic hoses (marked in
blue) of the marker control with a second double acting
spool valve (including a floating position) on the tractor.
(*see paragraph 7.3)

- Adjust the chain lenght. If the chains are shortened or the
adjustment strips A (fig. 9) are secured higher up, the
POLYMAT will follow the LELYTERRA sooner when the
combination is lifted. The tractor’s hydraulic lift can then
be adjusted lower.
Throughout the operation, the chains are not allowed to be
tightened. Make sure that their free movement is sufficient.
3.2 Mounting behind the tractor
- Adjust the tractor’s lower arms at an even height.
- Manoeuver the tractor in front of the POLYMAT and
couple the lower arms to the linkage pins A (fig. 10).
- Lift the machine until the parking jacks are only just clear
of the ground.
- Remove the parking jacks.
- Lower the machine until it is in a horizontal position.
- Fit the tractor’s top link in the topmost hole of the top link
plates by means of a top link pin (fig. 10).
- Check the PTO shaft for easy telescoping.
- Mount the PTO shaft to the tractor PTO.
At first assembly or use of another tractor: check the
minimum and maximum overlap of the PTO shaft halves.
(consult the instruction booklet supplied with the PTO shaft).
- Fit the safety chain of the PTO guard to a rigid part of the
tractor.
- Check if the ball valve (fig. 11) is closed (TRANSPORT
position).
- Connect the two hydraulic hoses (marked in white) of the
combined marker/coulter beam control with a double
acting spool valve on the tractor.
- Connect -if required*- the two hydraulic hoses (marked in
blue) of the marker control with a second double acting
spool valve on the tractor. (*see paragraph 7.3)

4 TRANSPORT
The POLYMAT and combination of POLYMAT/
LELYTERRA can be transported in the tractor’s hydraulic
lift.
- Lift the coulter beam and markers by means of the
hydraulic control.
- Close the ball valve (fig. 12) - TRANSPORT position.
- During public road transport, the transport width allowed
as a maximum by law should be observed.
The transport width of the POLYMAT 300W remains within
3,00 m providing that the markers and wheels (as well as the
LELYTERRA’s soil deflectors) are folded up.
Fold up the footboard of the filling platform. Pull out the
locking pin A (fig. 13). Fold up the wheel and secure the
wheel support by means of the lynch pin B.
- Use all lighting and warning signals as are mandatory by
law.
- Ensure sufficient front axle load for public road transport
(fit front weights, if necessary) and make sure that the rear
axle load allowed by law as a maximum is not exceeded.
The tractor is more manageable when the drill has an empty
hopper. It is therefore recommended to fill the hopper on the
plot to be drilled.
When the machine is placed back on the ground whilst the
coulters are not in the elevated position, the operator has to
drive forward slowly until the machine is on the ground.
Thus, damage to the coulters is avoided.
If the POLYMAT is transported by means of a truck or a
similar means of transport, the machine can be hoisted by
using the bracket in the hopper (fig. 14). Lifting and lowering
for transport purposes is only allowed with an empty hopper.

5 ADJUSTMENT OF POLYMAT FOR
OPERATION
5.1 Adjustment of markers
5.1.1 Adjustment of marker length
The markers mark out the centre of the following working
pass (fig. 15).
Marker length to be adjusted as follows.
- Determine the distance M as follows.
M = ½(W+R)
M = distance between the tracks of the outer coulter
and the marker disc
W = working width
R = coulter distance
Example:
POLYMAT 300W, 24 coulters (R=12,5 cm)
M = ½(300+12,5)=156,25 cm
- Adjust the marker length in such a way that the (centre of
the) marker disc track is situated at the distance M from the
outer coulter.
If the coulters are shut off alternately by means of a
distributor cover, the distance M should be calculated as
follows:
M1= ½(W+R) + R = distance between the tracks of the open
outer coulter and the marker disc
M0= ½(W+R) - R = distance between the tracks of the closed
outer coulter and the marker disc.
5.1.2 Adjustment of marker discs
The intensity of marking by the marker disc is related to the
angle to which the disc works (fig. 16).
On light soil types a prominent angle (A) will generally result
in a clearly visible track.
On harder types of soil, a sharper angle (B) is recommended.
- Untighten the securing bolt and twist the bent shaft of the
marker disc in order to adjust the angle position of the disc.

5.2 Adjustment of the metering device
The POLYMAT is capable of seeding seeds with dimensions
ranging from 1 to 10 mm. For the application of fine seeds,
the metering device features a special adjustment.
Listed on the calibration chart are the outputs in kg/ha for a
number of seeds, related to the adjustment of the metering
device.
You will find this calibration chart by way of supplement E in
the back of this Operator’s Manual as well as in the shape of a
decal at the back of the POLYMAT’s hopper.
5.2.1 Seed output setting
The quantity of seed to be put out per hectare can be set by
means of the spindle A (fig. 17). With this spindle, the cell
width in the metering device is either enlarged or reduced.
Such values “S” as are listed in the calibration chart
correspond with the position of the indicator B on the
calibration scale.
If there are seeds in the hopper and/or cell wheel, the
indicator is only allowed to be adjusted to a smaller setting
when the cell wheel is turning. If not, the seeds within the
cell wheel may be compressed and damage may be caused to
the metering device.
Turn the metering wheel round or use the calibration handle
to make the cell wheel turn round.
- First, open the metering device by means of the spindle
well beyond the required output setting.
- Then close the metering device by means of the spindle
until the indicator of the calibrated scale has reached the
required output setting.
By adjusting the metering device consistently from the
open to the closed position, play in the mechanism, if any,
is not allowed to affect the settings.
For the application of fine seeds (rape etc.) the metering
device should be adjusted from position N to F, which
reduces the depth of the cells.
Proceed as follows:
- Empty the hopper.
- Turn the cell wheel round until all seeds are removed from
the cells. The cell wheel can be turned round by turning the
metering wheel.
- Set the indicator at 0.
- Switch the lock A (fig. 18) from position N to F. The lock
now has to mesh with the groove of the hexagonal shaft.
If the fine seed position was selected, the calibration scale of
the metering device is not allowed to be set at a position
higher than 25.

The rotational speed of the cell wheel can be adjusted by
interchanging the gears (fig. 19) of the metering device. The
transmission Z=1 is the normal setting.
For the application of fine seeds and/or small quantities, the
setting Z=II should be used.
The output of transmission Z=II is slightly more than half the
quantity put out at the setting Z=I.
In order to obtain the output required, the cell wheel should
be opened further at the lower rotation speed. This ensures
more regular filling of cells for minor output rates and fine
seeds.
5.2.2 Compensation of slip of the metering wheel
A certain amount of slip was taken into account when
calculating the transmission ratio of the gears of the metering
wheel.
According to soil conditions, the effective slip may be
different.
A different amount of slip, if any, can be established as
follows.
- Set the hectare counter at 0.
- Drive a distance of:
333 m (POLYMAT 300)
250 m (POLYMAT 400)
If the slip is normal, the hectare counter will
indicate 00100.
If the hectare counter should indicate a different value, the
resulting difference in the effective output can be offset as
follows.
- Adjust the indicator higher or lower for the corresponding
percentage, reciprocal to the difference shown by the
hectare counter.
Example:
3% too low àset indicator at a 3% higher value
3% too high àset indicator at a 3% lower value
When carrying out a calibration test, turn the handle until the
hectare counter shows the different value, rather than the
normative 00100.

5.3 Position of the throttle valve of the
fan
The air flow speed can be reduced by means of the fan’s
throttle valve. Thus small-sized, light seeds can be kept from
being blown out of the furrow made by the coulter.
- Set the handle of the throtle valve (fig. 20) in position N for
the application of normal seeds; position F is meant for
seeding fine seeds.
5.4 Adjustment of sowing depth
The pressure of all coulters can be adjusted centrally and
evenly by means of the spindle (fig. 21).
- Turn the spindle to the right for an increase of sowing depth
and to the left if a shallower depth is required.
The pressure of each individual coulter can be adjusted by
means of the chain attached to the draw spring (fig. 22).
- Use another shackle to attach the chain to the coulter. A
smaller length of chain increases the sowing depth.
When operating on loose soil, with a small interrow distance
and at a high forward speed we recommend a lighter
adjustment of the coulter pressure of the foremost coulter
row. This will keep the seed rows from being covered with
soil by the following coulter rows.
- Increase the chain length of all coulters of the foremost row
by 1 shackle.

5.5 Adjustment of track eradicators
- The track eradicators (fig. 23) can be fitted behind the
wheels in 8 positions. The more severe the wheeling, the
deeper the track eradicators should be adjusted.
- If the POLYMAT has to be put down on a hard ground, the
track eradicators should be fitted with the coulters pointing
upwards.
5.6 Position of the machine
Throughout the operation, the POLYMAT needs to be in a
horizontal position. This position is ensured when the rim of
the hopper is horizontal.
- Adjust the machine in a horizontal position by means of the
top link (fig. 24).
When setting up the POLYMAT on a hard ground, wheeling
of the land wheels should be taken into account.

6 Calibration test
The effective seed output may be affected by a change of the
specific gravity and/or size of the seeds. It is therefore
recommended to carry out a calibration test before
proceeding to the application of a new lot of seeds.
A calibration test is carried out as follows:
- Dismount the drive shaft A (fig. 25) from the square
gearbox.
- Fit the handle B for coulter pressure adjustment onto the
gearbox.
- Remove the air supply hose from the metering device.
- Set the indicator of the metering device at the value shown
for the output required in the calibration chart, or at such a
value as was established during a previous calibration test.
If the metering device contains seeds and you have to adjust
down to a lower value, you will have to turn the handle
simultaneously to prevent damage to the metering unit.
- Fill the hopper.
- Place an empty bucket underneath the metering device (fig.
26).
- Set the hectare counter at zero.
- Turn the handle round (not too fast - say 1 rotation per
second) until the hectare counter (fig. 27) indicates 00100
(=0,1 ha).
If the POLYMAT does not have a hectare counter, the
number of rotations of the handle has to be counted. Turn
the handle 68 times (= 0,1 ha).
Compensate a different slip, if any, of the metering wheel
(see paragraph 5.2.2).
Turn the handle until the hectare counter shows the different
value, rather than the normative 00100.
- Weigh the quantity of seed caught in the bucket. Ensure
that an accurate weighing device is used.
- Multiply this quantity by 10. This is the output per hectare.
- Establish the difference (%) between this quantity and the
output required.
- Adjust the position of the indicator accordingly.

Example:
required output 240 kg/ha (wheat)
• setting value according to chart = 70
• outcome of calibration test: 22 kg
• 22 x 10 = 220 kg/ha, which is approx. 8% less than
the output required
• increase the setting value by 8%, i.e. up to 76
- Carry out the test one more time, after having adjusted the
output setting.
- Fit the air supply hose back in position underneath the
metering device.
- Remove the handle from the gearbox and fit it on the
spindle for coulter pressure adjustment.
- Mount the drive shaft on the gearbox.

7 OPERATING THE POLYMAT
It is not allowed to take passengers on the machine.
When the machine has been parked outside, rain water may
have amassed in the air supply hose towards the metering
device.
- Remove the hose from the metering device (fig. 28) and
drain the water, if any.
7.1 PTO speed
The fan should be driven by a PTO speed of either 540 or
1,000 r.p.m.
The decal on the V-belt casing indicates the required PTO
speed (fig. 29), which is also the maximum speed.
- Check if this speed corresponds with the correct PTO speed
for driving the LELYTERRA.
- Adjust the r.p.m. to the required speed at the beginning of a
working pass before lowering the coulters.
- Reduce the r.p.m. at the end of the working pass, but only
after the coulters (as well as the metering wheel) have been
lifted from the ground.
- Keep the PTO speed from falling (temporarily) during the
sowing operation.
If the PTO speed is too low, the accuracy of seed distribution
may be affected whilst the hoses tend to get clogged,
especially when major outputs and/or large-sized seeds are
applied.
Too high a rotor speed may cause damage to the fan.
7.2 Reading off the hectare counter
The hectare counter (fig. 30) indicates the surface worked in
units of 10 m² (=1/1000 ha). The white digits show the
completed hectares.
So: the value 00100 on the counter corresponds with 0,1
hectare.
The zero position of the hectare counter can be set with the
knob on the RH side.

7.3Control of coulter beam and markers
The valve to which two white-marked hydraulic hoses are
connected ensures simultaneous control of the coulter beam
and markers.
Use this valve if the coulters need to be lifted whilst the
markers should be switched as well (turning on headlands).
The valve to which two blue-marked hydraulic hoses are
connected ensures individual control of the markers. Use this
valve if the marker needs to be folded up, for example in
order to pass by an obstacle.
Ensure that the hydraulic valves are in the floating position
during machine operations, eliminating pressure build-up in
the return lines.
Attention! Should the coulter beam rise inadvertently when
this valve is actuated, the tractor’s hydraulic system
needs to be checked. Because of an internal leakage in
the system, pressure is built up in the white-market
hoses aswell.
The ball valve (fig. 31) should be open for folding the
markers up and down.
When actuating any of these two valves, the LH and RH
markers are lowered alternately.
If the intended marker is not lowered, you should proceed as
follows.
- Lower the (wrong) marker roughly half-way.
- Fold up the marker by actuating the valve of the marker
control.
- Actuate the valve one more time. Now the intended marker
will be lowered.
If the ball valve is closed (TRANSPORT position) the coulter
beam can be controlled, but the markers will remain the same
position.
You may choose not to use the marker control because there
are no obstacles on your land. Operator’s errors, if any, are
then eliminated.
In that case, the blue-marked hydraulic hoses should not be
connected. Do bear in mind that, when correcting the marker
to be lowered, the coulters are lifted as well.
