General safety guidelines
Always observe the following precautions to reduce the risk of injury and property damage.
Service
Do not attempt to service aproduct yourself unless instructed to do so by the Customer Support Center.
Use only aservice provider who is approved to repair your particular product.
Note: Some parts can be upgraded or replaced by the customer. These parts are referred to as Customer
Replaceable Units, or CRUs. Lenovo expressly identifies CRUs as such, and provides
documentation with instructions when it is appropriate for customers to replace those parts. You
must closely follow all instructions when performing such replacements. The Off state of apower
indicator does not necessarily mean that voltage levels inside aproduct are zero. Always make
sure that the power is turned off and that the product is unplugged from any power source before
you attempt the replacement. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the Customer Support
Center.
Power cords and power adapters
Use only the power cords and power adapters supplied by the product manufacturer.
Never wrap apower cord around the power adapter or other object. Doing so can stress the cord in ways
that can cause the cord to fray, crack or crimp. This can present asafety hazard.
Always route power cords so that they will not be walked on, tripped over, or pinched by objects.
Protect the cord and power adapters from liquids. For instance, do not leave your cord or power adapter
near sinks, tubs, toilets, or on floors that are cleaned with liquid cleansers. Liquids can cause ashort
circuit, particularly if the cord or power adapter has been stressed by misuse. Liquids can also cause
gradual corrosion of the power cord terminals and/or the connector terminals on the adapter which can
eventually result in overheating.
Always connect power cords and signal cables in the correct order and ensure that all power cord
connectors are securely and completely plugged into receptacles.
Do not use any power adapter that shows corrosion at the ac input pins and/or shows signs of
overheating (such as deformed plastic) at the ac input or anywhere on the power adapter.
Do not use any power cords where the electrical contacts on either end show signs of corrosion or
overheating or where the power cord appears to have been damaged in any way.
Extension cords and related devices
Ensure that extension cords, surge protectors, uninterruptible power supplies, and power strips that you
use are rated to handle the electrical requirements of the product. Never overload these devices. If power
strips are used, the load should not exceed the power strip input rating. Consult an electrician for more
information if you have questions about power loads, power requirements, and input ratings.

Plugs and outlets
If areceptacle (power outlet) that you intend to use with your computer equipment appears to be
damaged or corroded, do not use the outlet until it is replaced by aqualified electrician.
Do not bend or modify the plug. If the plug is damaged, contact the manufacturer to obtain a
replacement.
Some products are equipped with athree-pronged plug. This plug fits only into agrounded electrical
outlet. This is asafety feature. Do not defeat this safety feature by trying to insert it into anon-grounded
outlet. If you cannot insert the plug into the outlet, contact an electrician for an approved outlet adapter
or to replace the outlet with one that enables this safety feature. Never overload an electrical outlet. The
overall system load should not exceed 80 percent of the branch circuit rating. Consult an electrician for
more information if you have questions about power loads and branch circuit ratings.
Be sure that the power outlet you are using is properly wired, easily accessible, and located close to the
equipment. Do not fully extend power cords in away that will stress the cords.
Connect and disconnect the equipment from the electrical outlet carefully.
Batteries
All personal computers manufactured by Lenovo contain anon-rechargeable coin cell battery to provide
power to the system clock. In addition many mobile products such as notebook PCs utilize arechargeable
battery pack to provide system power when in portable mode. Batteries supplied by Lenovo for use with
your product have been tested for compatibility and should only be replaced with Lenovo approved
parts.
Never attempt to open or service any battery. Do not crush, puncture, or incinerate batteries or short
circuit the metal contacts. Do not expose the battery to water or other liquids. Only recharge the battery
pack strictly according to instructions included in the product documentation.
Battery abuse or mishandling can cause the battery to overheat, which can cause gasses or flame to
“vent” from the battery pack or coin cell. If your battery is damaged, or if you notice any discharge from
your battery or the buildup of foreign materials on the battery leads, stop using the battery and obtain a
replacement from the battery manufacturer.
Batteries can degrade when they are left unused for long periods of time. For some rechargeable batteries
(particularly Lithium Ion batteries), leaving abattery unused in adischarged state could increase the risk
of abattery short circuit, which could shorten the life of the battery and can also pose asafety hazard. Do
not let rechargeable Lithium-Ion batteries completely discharge or store these batteries in adischarged
state.
Heat and product ventilation
Computers, AC power adapters, and many accessories can generate heat when turned on and when
batteries are charging. Always follow these basic precautions:
vDo not leave your computer, AC power adapter, or accessories in contact with your lap or any part of
your body for an extended period when the products are functioning or when the battery is charging.
Your computer, AC power adapter, and many accessories produce some heat during normal operation.
Extended contact with the body could cause discomfort or, potentially, askin burn.
vDo not charge the battery or operate your computer, AC power adapter, or accessories near flammable
materials or in explosive environments.

vVentilation slots, fans, and heat sinks are provided with the product for safety, comfort, and reliable
operation. These features might inadvertently become blocked by placing the product on abed, sofa,
carpet, or other flexible surface. Never block, cover, or disable these features.

Chapter 1. About the ThinkPad Blu-ray Burner Ultrabay Serial
ATA Drive
This manual provides information on registering, installing, and using the ThinkPad®Blu-ray™Ultrabay™
Serial ATA Drive, and is available on the Software and User Guide CD.
The appendices of this guide contain warranty information and legal notices.
Product description
Your Blu-ray drive is compatible with the DVD-Multi Recorder specification, and can record as well as
read DVD-RAM, DVD-/+RW, and DVD-/+R (for General, 650 nm) media. (Some DVD+R and DVD+RW
media brands may not be compatible.) Your Blu-ray drive can also record CD-R, CD-RW, and High-Speed
CD-RW media, and uses buffer underrun prevention technology for reliable CD burning. Your Blu-ray
drive can read many other formats including DVD Video, Video CD, Audio CD, multiple-session,
extended architecture (XA) CDs, and Kodak Photo CDs. The Blu-ray drive is designed for installation in
your Ultrabay Serial ATA Drive Bay.

Software description
The Software and User Guide CD contains the following software:
vIntervideo WinDVD 8
This software enables you to play back DVD and Blu-ray videos on your computer or to play video
files from your hard disk drive.
Note: Most graphics adapters cannot support playback of high bit rate Blu-ray videos.
vUlead DVD Movie Factory 5
This software enables you to record data and videos to BD-R and BD-RE discs.
Installation requirements
To install the Blu-ray drive, your ThinkPad computer must contain either the Microsoft®Windows Vista®
or Microsoft Windows®XP operating system.
Important: To enable satisfactory playback of Blu-ray video, your ThinkPad computer must contain
either the Intel®Graphics Media Accelerator X4500, ATI Mobility Radeon™X3400, or Nvidia
Quadro®7300 Series graphics adapter.
Note: Lenovo®offers no support for Blu-ray playback or recording on computers with Microsoft
Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, Microsoft Windows 2000, or Microsoft Windows Millennium
Edition (Me) desktop operating systems.

Installing the drive
Your ThinkPad computer includes the ThinkPad Access help system, which provides drive installation
instructions specific to your computer. To correctly install the Blu-ray drive into the Ultrabay bay, use the
instructions provided in the ThinkPad Access help system on your computer.
Locating the drive controls
The following diagram shows the location of the controls on the front of the drive.
1 Power light: This light is visible when the drive is in use.
2 Eject button: Press this button to eject aDVD or CD.
3 Manual eject hole: Use this emergency release to eject aDVD or CD when the Eject button does not
work. For more information on manually ejecting aDVD or CD, see “Manually ejecting adisc” on page
2-2.

This section provides information on how to handle, load, and care for DVDs and CDs, and how to care
for your ThinkPad Blu-ray Burner Ultrabay Serial ATA Drive.
Before you begin
For best results, review the following guidelines before using the drive:
vDo not move your ThinkPad computer while formatting or writing to adisc as this might cause data
errors. Also, minimize typing while formatting or writing to adisc, as this might also cause data errors.
vKeep the ThinkPad computer on aflat surface when writing to adisc.
vMake sure the ThinkPad computer is plugged into an AC outlet when using the drive. The disc might
be damaged if the battery runs out while writing to adisc.
vTurn screen savers off. Using ascreen saver might interrupt the formatting and writing process.
vDo not put your ThinkPad computer into hibernation or suspend mode while writing to adisc.
Note: The read and write results of the drive depend upon the quality and characteristics of the DVD or
CD media used.
Caring for the Blu-ray drive
To protect your drive during operation, follow the precautions below:
vRemove the disc from the drive before moving the drive.
vDo not insert foreign objects into the drive.
vDo not stack objects on the drive.
vDo not remove the drive cover or attempt to service the drive.
vDo not operate the drive under any of these conditions:
–High temperature, high humidity, or direct sunlight
–Excessive vibration, sudden shock, or inclined surface
–Excessive dust
Loading adisc
1. Press the Eject button. The tray slides out of the drive.
2. Place adisc in the tray with the label facing up.

3. Close the tray by gently pushing the tray in until it latches.
Attention: Do not use force or insert foreign objects to open the tray. If your tray does not open when you press
the Eject button, see “Manually ejecting adisc” for more information.
Securing adisc in avertically mounted drive
The drive has four retainers molded into the loading tray for vertical mounting operation. To insert a
disc, place it in the lower two retainers before closing the tray. To remove adisc, open the tray and lift
the disc from the two lower retainers.
Manually ejecting adisc
If you press the Eject button and the tray does not slide out, turn off the computer and straighten alarge
paper clip to form atool, as shown in the figure. The straightened end must extend at least 45 mm (1.8
inch). Insert the extended end into the manual-eject hole on the front of the drive. Push the paper clip
until the tray opens. Gently pull out the tray until you can remove the disc.

Using media
This section contains information on using media.
Handling and caring for adisc
Carefully handle and clean discs, especially writable media types such as CD-R and CD-RW discs, so that
they remain readable. You can prolong the life of your discs by following the precautions below:
vAlways store discs in their original packaging.
vAlways store discs out of direct sunlight.
vAlways store discs away from direct heat sources.
vRemove discs from the computer when not in use.
vCheck discs for cracks before each use.
Important: Do not use discs that are cracked.
vDo not force discs into the computer or packaging.
vDo not bend or flex discs.
vDo not use commercial cleaners to clean discs.
vDo not write on the surface of discs.
vHandle discs by the edges or the center hole.
vDo not touch the surface of discs.
vTo remove dust or fingerprints, wipe discs from the center to the edge with asoft, lint-free cloth.
Attention: Wiping adisc using acircular motion can cause data loss.

Your drive can use many different types of media. Not all media are used in the same way. The following
sections describe what you can do with the different media types.
Using DVD-RAM media
This section contains information on using DVD-RAM media in the Blu-ray drive.
Removing the disc from the cartridge

DVD-RAM media are available in bare-disc or cartridge form. To use cartridge media in your Blu-ray
drive, you must first remove the disc from the cartridge.
Using the tip of aball point pen, push and break the lock pin tab 1.To remove the disc, use the ball
point pen to push down on the cartridge lid lock 2 and pull the cartridge lid out 3.When the
cartridge lid is open, the disc can be removed.
Note: The cartridge lid lock and the cartridge lid tab are located on the side of some cartridges, as shown
in 2aand 3aabove.
Attention: Do not touch the recording area of the disc when handling bare media.

Returning the disc to the cartridge
To return the disc to the cartridge, align the label side of the disc 1with the DVD-RAM cartridge label
side. Insert the disc and close the cartridge lid 2.Aclicking sound will occur when the lid is closed.
Precautions for handling
Be careful when handling the removed disc. Debris, dust particles, fingerprints, smears, or scratches may
impair recording and playback of the media. To clean dust or other debris, use aCD Cleaning Kit. Use a
soft, dry cloth to clean the disc. Do not use solvents to clean the disc surface. When labeling adisc, write
only on the printed label side or the cartridge using asoft felt-tip marker. Keep out of direct sunlight,
high temperatures, and humidity. Do not attach labels to either side of the disc.
Using single and double-sided DVD-RAM media
DVD-RAM media are available in single-sided and double-sided versions.
The 2.6 GB and 4.7 GB versions are single-sided. The 9.4 GB version is double-sided. To access the data
on both sides of the media, you must remove the media from the drive, turn it over, and re-insert it into
the drive.
Using CDs and DVDs
Complete these steps to read adata disc:
1. Turn on the computer.
2. Press the Open/Close button on the front of the drive.
3. Insert adisc or cartridge in the tray with the label facing up.
4. Close the tray by pressing the Open/Close button or by gently pushing in the loading tray.
Attention: Do not use force or insert foreign objects to open the loading tray.
5. Wait for the drive busy indicator to turn off; and then double-click My Computer.
6. Double-click the CD-ROM or DVD-RAM/DVD-R/DVD-RW icon.
Using CD-Rs and CD-RWs
The Blu-ray drive can write to both CD-R and CD-RW discs. CD-R discs cannot be erased, but can be
used with standard CD-ROM drives and CD players.
You can use CD-R discs to record audio tracks, store data, archive files, and copy files from another CD.
CD-RW discs can be erased and rewritten, but can be used only with newer CD-RW-compatible CD-ROM
and DVD-ROM drives. You can use CD-RW discs to back up, store, and update files or to copy files from
another CD.
Notes:
1. CD-R discs are playable on audio CD players. CD-RW discs are not playable on most audio CD
players.
2. The software included with this drive does not enable the drive CD-recording capabilities with DOS,
Windows 3.x, or OS/2®operating systems.

Using DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs
The Blu-ray drive can write to both DVD-R and DVD-RW discs. DVD-R discs cannot be erased, but can
be used with standard DVD-ROM drives and DVD players.
You can use DVD-R discs to record audio tracks, store data, archive files, and copy files from another
DVD.
DVD-RW discs can be erased and rewritten, but can be used only with newer MR- and
DVD-RW-compatible DVD-ROM drives. You can use DVD-RW discs to back up, store, and update files or
to copy files from another DVD.
For more information on using the software, refer to “Using DVD Movie Factory” on page 2-7.
Using Blu-ray discs
The Blu-ray drive can read pressed Blu-ray discs, and can read and write to BD-R and BD-RE discs.
Pressed Blu-ray discs are read-only and can contain movies or data. Pressed Blu-ray discs come in two
sizes, 50 Gigabytes (GB) and 25 GB. Your Blu-ray drive can read both single-layer (25 GB) and double
layer (50 GB) discs. Most pressed Blu-ray discs are encoded using aUDF 2.5 file system. Windows Vista
can natively read UDF 2.5 discs. Windows XP cannot natively read UDF 2.5 discs.
BD-R discs can be written once, and cannot be erased. You can use BD-R discs to store data, archive files,
and copy files from another disc.
BD-RE discs can be erased and rewritten. You can use BD-RE discs to store data, archive files, and copy
files from another disc.
You can easily copy Blu-ray discs and the data on them to hard disk drive or other media. Data files that
are copied will act as if they were on the disc. Movies that are copied from Blu-ray discs are protected by
the Advanced Access Content System (AACS) and cannot be played back after copying.
Notes:
1. Blu-ray discs cannot be read at all in anormal DVD drive or player.
2. The Blu-ray drive does not read or write HD DVD discs.
For more information on using the software, refer to “Using DVD Movie Factory” on page 2-7.
Installing software
After you connect the Blu-ray drive to the computer, you can install software from the ThinkPad Blu-ray
Burner Ultrabay Serial ATA Drive Software and User Guide CD.Complete these steps to install software:
1. Insert the Software and User Guide CD into the drive.
2. If the CD starts automatically, continue with Step 5.
3. If the CD does not start automatically, click Start,and then click Run.
4. In the Run box type x:\launch.bat,where xis the drive letter of the ThinkPad Blu-ray Burner
Ultrabay Serial ATA Drive.
5. If you get awarning from Internet Explorer®about malicious scripts, right-click on the warning bar,
and select Allow Blocked Content.
6. Select Software from the left-hand navigator bar.
7. Check the boxes by the software applications that you wish to install.
8. Click Go.The software you selected will install silently.
9. Restart the computer after the completion message.

Note: If the software fails to install silently, you can select the instructions of each package from the
bottom line of the installation page.
Before using the software
Video playback requires acompatible video device driver and IDE bus mastering in order to work. See
Appendix A, “Customizing the device driver configuration settings,” on page A-1 for information on
enabling DMA bus mastering and for locating video device drivers.
Using WinDVD
To view the video content of aBlu-ray or DVD disc, launch WinDVD from the Start menu or by clicking
the shortcut on your desktop and insert the disc into the drive.
When the WinDVD is starting up, the drive light will run for several seconds, then the video output
window will resize to the size of the video. Once the video is playing, the WinDVD controls can be used
to navigate through the video and disc menus.
With Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate or Microsoft Windows Home Premium, you can also play DVD
Video content by using the Windows Media®Player or Windows Media Center applications.
With Microsoft Windows Vista, you can also play DVD Video content by using the Windows Media
Player or Windows Media Center applications.
Notes:
1. Windows Vista 64 will not always autoplay video content. For more Information, see Chapter 3,
“Troubleshooting,” on page 3-1.
2. Microsoft Windows built-in applications cannot play Blu-ray movies.
3. Blu-ray movie discs will not autoplay in Windows XP. Windows XP cannot natively read the UDF 2.5
file system. Therefore, these Blu-ray movie discs are considered blank.
Viewing Blu-ray movies
You can use WinDVD to watch Blu-ray movies with the Blu-ray drive. These movies are usually of very
high resolution, and have better picture and sound performance than normal DVDs. Blu-ray movies also
have additional features such as games and internet content. WinDVD can play back Blu-ray movies with
excellent sound and picture quality.
Most Blu-ray movies are recorded at 1920×1080 resolution. WinDVD can scale this size to fit on your
monitor or into ascreen window. If the resolution of your monitor is sufficient, you can watch the movies
at full size.
The cost of such alarge resolution is that few video cards have enough power to display some Blu-ray
movies without jerking.
Important: To enable satisfactory playback of Blu-ray video, your ThinkPad computer must contain
either the Intel®Graphics Media Accelerator X4500, ATI Mobility Radeon™X3400, or Nvidia
Quadro®7300 Series graphics adapter.
Blu-ray movies are more interactive than DVD movies. In Blu-ray, the disc is enabled to determine what
controls (stop, pause, etc.) function and whether the mouse can be used. Most Blu-ray discs have chapter
and set-up menus that can be used while the movie is playing. Right-clicking on the video window and
selecting "Pop-up on" will activate any in-line menu.
