Thischaptercontainsthesaetyinormationthatyoumustbeamiliarwith.
Powercordsandpoweradapters
Useonlythepowercordsandpoweradapterssuppliedbytheproductmanuacturer.Donotusetheac
powercordorotherdevices.
Thepowercordsshallbesaetyapproved.ForGermany,itshallbeH05VV-F,3G,0.75mm2,orbetter.For
othercountries,thesuitabletypesshallbeusedaccordingly.
Neverwrapapowercordaroundapoweradapterorotherobject.Doingsocanstressthecordinwaysthat
cancausethecordtoray,crack,orcrimp.Thiscanpresentasaetyhazard.
Alwaysroutepowercordssothattheywillnotbewalkedon,trippedover,orpinchedbyobjects.
Protectpowercordandpoweradaptersromliquids.Forinstance,donotleaveyourpowercordorpower
adapternearsinks,tubs,toilets,oronfloorsthatarecleanedwithliquidcleansers.Liquidscancausea
shortcircuit,particularlyithepowercordorpoweradapterhasbeenstressedbymisuse.Liquidsalsocan
causegradualcorrosionopowercordterminalsand/ortheconnectorterminalsonapoweradapter,
whichcaneventuallyresultinoverheating.
Ensurethatallpowercordconnectorsaresecurelyandcompletelypluggedintoreceptacles.
Donotuseanypoweradapterthatshowscorrosionattheacinputpinsorshowssignsooverheating(such
asdeormedplastic)attheacinputoranywhereonthepoweradapter.
Donotuseanypowercordswheretheelectricalcontactsoneitherendshowsignsocorrosionor
overheatingorwherethepowercordappearstohavebeendamagedinanyway.
Generalsafety
Followtheserulestoensuregeneralsaety:
•Observegoodhousekeepingintheareaothemachinesduringandatermaintenance.
•Whenlitinganyheavyobject:
1.Ensureyoucanstandsaelywithoutslipping.
2.Distributetheweightotheobjectequallybetweenyoureet.
3.Useaslowlitingorce.Nevermovesuddenlyortwistwhenyouattempttolit.
4.Litbystandingorbypushingupwithyourlegmuscles;thisactionremovesthestrainromthe
musclesinyourback.
Attention:
Donotattempttolitanyobjectsthatweighmorethan16kg(35lb)orobjectsthatyouthinkare
tooheavyoryou.
•Donotperormanyactionthatcauseshazardstothecustomer,orthatmakestheequipmentunsae.
•Beoreyoustartthemachine,ensurethatotherservicerepresentativesandthecustomer'spersonnelare
notinahazardousposition.

•Placeremovedcoversandotherpartsinasaeplace,awayromallpersonnel,whileyouareservicing
themachine.
•Keepyourtoolcaseawayromwalkareassothatotherpeoplewillnottripoverit.
•Donotwearlooseclothingthatcanbetrappedinthemovingpartsoamachine.Ensurethatyoursleeves
areastenedorrolledupaboveyourelbows.Iyourhairislong,astenit.
•Inserttheendsoyournecktieorscarinsideclothingorastenitwithanonconductiveclip,approximately
8centimeters(3inches)romtheend.
•Donotwearjewelry,chains,metal-rameeyeglasses,ormetalastenersoryourclothing.
Remember:Metalobjectsaregoodelectricalconductors.
•Wearsaetyglasseswhenyouare:hammering,drilling,soldering,cuttingwire,attachingsprings,using
solvents,orworkinginanyotherconditionsthatmightbehazardoustoyoureyes.
•Aterservice,reinstallallsaetyshields,guards,labels,andgroundwires.Replaceanysaetydevice
thatiswornordeective.
•Reinstallallcoverscorrectlybeorereturningthemachinetothecustomer.

Hazardousmoingparts.Keepfingersandotherbodypartsaway.
CAUTION:
Beforeyouopenthecomputercoer,turnoffthecomputerandwaitseeralminutesuntilthe
computeriscool.
Electricalsafety
CAUTION:
Electricalcurrentfrompower,telephone,andcommunicationcablescanbehazardous.Toaoid
personalinjuryorequipmentdamage,disconnecttheattachedpowercords,telecommunication
systems,networks,andmodemsbeforeyouopenthecomputercoers,unlessinstructedotherwise
intheinstallationandconfigurationprocedures.
Observetheollowingruleswhenworkingonelectricalequipment.
Important:Useonlyapprovedtoolsandtestequipment.Somehandtoolshavehandlescoveredwithasot
materialthatdoesnotinsulateyouwhenworkingwithliveelectricalcurrents.Manycustomershave,near
theirequipment,rubberfloormatsthatcontainsmallconductivefiberstodecreaseelectrostaticdischarges.
Donotusethistypeomattoprotectyourselromelectricalshock.

•Findtheroomemergencypower-o(EPO)switch,disconnectingswitch,orelectricaloutlet.Ianelectrical
accidentoccurs,youcanthenoperatetheswitchorunplugthepowercordquickly.
•Donotworkaloneunderhazardousconditionsornearequipmentthathashazardousvoltages.
•Disconnectallpowerbeore:
–Perormingamechanicalinspection
–Workingnearpowersupplies
–RemovingorinstallingFieldReplaceableUnits(FRUs)
•Beoreyoustarttoworkonthemachine,unplugthepowercord.Iyoucannotunplugit,powerothe
wallboxthatsuppliespowertothemachineandlockthewallboxintheoposition.
•Iyouneedtoworkonamachinethathasexposedelectricalcircuits,observetheollowingprecautions:
–Ensurethatanotherperson,amiliarwiththepower-ocontrols,isnearyou.
Remember:Anotherpersonmustbetheretoswitchothepower,inecessary.
–Useonlyonehandwhenworkingwithpowered-onelectricalequipment;keeptheotherhandinyour
pocketorbehindyourback.
Remember:Theremustbeacompletecircuittocauseelectricalshock.Byobservingtheaboverule,
youmaypreventacurrentrompassingthroughyourbody.
–Whenusingatester,setthecontrolscorrectlyandusetheapprovedprobeleadsandaccessoriesor
thattester.
–Standonsuitablerubbermats(obtainedlocally,inecessary)toinsulateyouromgroundssuchas
metalfloorstripsandmachinerames.
Observethespecialsaetyprecautionswhenyouworkwithveryhighvoltages;theseinstructionsarein
thesaetysectionsomaintenanceinormation.Useextremecarewhenmeasuringhighvoltages.
•Regularlyinspectandmaintainyourelectricalhandtoolsorsaeoperationalcondition.
•Donotusewornorbrokentoolsandtesters.
•Neverassumethatpowerhasbeendisconnectedromacircuit.First,checkthatithasbeenpowered-o.
•Alwayslookcareullyorpossiblehazardsinyourworkarea.Examplesothesehazardsaremoistfloors,
nongroundedpowerextensioncables,powersurges,andmissingsaetygrounds.
•Donottouchliveelectricalcircuitswiththereflectivesuraceoaplasticdentalmirror.Thesuraceis
conductive;suchtouchingcancausepersonalinjuryandmachinedamage.
•Donotservicetheollowingpartswiththepoweronwhentheyareremovedromtheirnormaloperating
placesinamachine:
–Powersupplyunits
–Pumps
–Blowersandans
–Motorgenerators
andsimilarunits.(Thispracticeensurescorrectgroundingotheunits.)
•Ianelectricalaccidentoccurs:
–Usecaution;donotbecomeavictimyoursel.
–Switchopower.
–Sendanotherpersontogetmedicalaid.

Safetyinspectionguide
Theintentothisinspectionguideistoassistyouinidentiyingpotentiallyunsaeconditionsonthese
products.Eachmachine,asitwasdesignedandbuilt,hadrequiredsaetyitemsinstalledtoprotectusers
andservicepersonnelrominjury.Thisguideaddressesonlythoseitems.However,goodjudgmentshould
beusedtoidentiypotentialsaetyhazardsduetoattachmentoeaturesoroptionsnotcoveredbythis
inspectionguide.
Ianyunsaeconditionsarepresent,youmustdeterminehowserioustheapparenthazardcouldbeand
whetheryoucancontinuewithoutfirstcorrectingtheproblem.
Considertheseconditionsandthesaetyhazardstheypresent:
•Electricalhazards,especiallyprimarypower(primaryvoltageontheramecancauseseriousoratal
electricalshock).
•Explosivehazards,suchasadamagedCRTaceorbulgingcapacitor
•Mechanicalhazards,suchaslooseormissinghardware
Theguideconsistsoaseriesostepspresentedinachecklist.Beginthecheckswiththepowero,and
thepowercorddisconnected.
Checklist:
1.Checkexteriorcoversordamage(loose,broken,orsharpedges).
2.Power-othecomputer.Disconnectthepowercord.
3.Checkthepowercordor:
a.Athird-wiregroundconnectoringoodcondition.Useametertomeasurethird-wireground
continuityor0.1ohmorlessbetweentheexternalgroundpinandrameground.
b.Thepowercordshouldbetheappropriatetypeasspecifiedinthepartslistings.
c.Insulationmustnotberayedorworn.
4.Removethecover.
5.Checkoranyobviousalterations.Usegoodjudgmentastothesaetyoanyalterations.
6.Checkinsidetheunitoranyobviousunsaeconditions,suchasmetalfilings,contamination,wateror
otherliquids,orsignsofireorsmokedamage.
7.Checkorworn,rayed,orpinchedcables.
8.Checkthatthepower-supplycoverasteners(screwsorrivets)havenotbeenremovedortamperedwith.
Handlingelectrostaticdischarge-sensitiedeices
Anycomputerpartcontainingtransistorsorintegratedcircuits(ICs)shouldbeconsideredsensitiveto
electrostaticdischarge(ESD).ESDdamagecanoccurwhenthereisadierenceinchargebetweenobjects.
ToprotectagainstESDdamage,equalizethechargebetweenobjects.Then,themachine,thepart,the
workmat,andthepersonhandlingthepartareallatthesamecharge.
Notes:
1.Useproduct-specificESDprocedureswhentheyexceedtherequirementsnotedhere.
2.MakesurethattheESDprotectivedevicesyouusehavebeencertified(ISO9000)asullyeective.
WhenhandlingESD-sensitiveparts:
•Keepthepartsinprotectivepackagesuntiltheyareinsertedintotheproduct.
•Avoidcontactwithotherpeoplewhilehandlingthepart.

•Wearagroundedwriststrapagainstyourskintoeliminatestaticonyourbody.
•Preventthepartromtouchingyourclothing.Mostclothingisinsulativeandretainsachargeeven
whenyouarewearingawriststrap.
•Usetheblacksideoagroundedworkmattoprovideastatic-reeworksurace.Thematisespecially
useulwhenhandlingESD-sensitivedevices.
•Selectagroundingsystem,suchasthoselistedbelow,toprovideprotectionthatmeetsthespecific
servicerequirement.
Note:TheuseoagroundingsystemisdesirablebutnotrequiredtoprotectagainstESDdamage.
–AttachtheESDgroundcliptoanyrameground,groundbraid,orgreen-wireground.
–UseanESDcommongroundorreerencepointwhenworkingonadouble-insulatedor
battery-operatedsystem.Youcanusecoaxorconnector-outsideshellsonthesesystems.
–Usetheroundground-prongotheacplugonac-operatedcomputers.
Groundingrequirements
